When Joseph handed Ms. Taylor his homework, he couldn’t have imagined how writing a short story would help him get more than a grade.
Joseph, who was ___13___, had few close friends. In his art class, students usually discussed modern painters and skills of mixing paint. He kept quiet. No one except Karen seemed to ___14___ him at all. So Joseph wanted to invite Karen to see the Jackson Pollock painting exhibit at the local museum. Every time he had an opportunity to invite her, he’d start by talking about his own painting. He knew his ___15___ was not as good as Karen’s—she was a natural artist—but he wasn’t sure where else to begin. He never got to the invitation before the bell rang.
But things suddenly changed when Joseph received an A+ on his story about a boy trying to ask a friend to an art opening. He was amazed. He knew that writing was fun and came ___16___ to him, but he didn’t realize he was good at it.
Ms. Taylor’s comments made him think he had a special talent, kind of like Karen’s for painting. Ms. Taylor ___17___ him to enter an upcoming national writing contest(比赛). At the beginning, Joseph didn’t want to enter the contest. He was worried that he would ___18___ his new pride in himself if he didn’t win. Dear Alex,
I’m not good at physics. But I have a dream to be a space scientist, and I’m crazy about the mysteries of life. What should I do to achieve my dream?
Stella
Dear Stella,
Your dream is one that many people would be familiar with. Although becoming a space scientist is just a dream, a strong education in the topics related to this field is essential. Think of your studies as the rocket ship that will be launching you off into the unknown. Every time you study, you are adding rocket fuel to your launchpad (发射台), and every exam is a test flight for the real mission one day.
Science and work in space are important fields to be involved in. It’s crucial for your understanding of physics to be near perfect if you want to achieve your future goals. The crew (全体机组人员) of a spaceship wouldn’t feel comfortable on missions if the team back on Earth hadn’t read up on (仔细研究) their physics. And likewise, I don’t think astronauts would be selected if they didn’t know the difference between Mars and Uranus (天王星).
You should be grateful that you live in the present. A large record of information on space and physics is just a click away on the Internet. Use this to study and become a space expert. However, make sure you have time to fuel your imagination about space. Read sci-fi books and watch TV shows and movies. This will keep your curiosity alive and remind you why you set out on your mission to space in the first place.
Alex
21.Stella’s dream is to be ______.
A.an astronaut B.a space scientist C.a physics expert D.a worker of a spaceship
22.______ is not Alex’s suggestion.
A.Reading sci-fi books B.Watching TV shows and movies
C.Being good at physics D.Studying the Internet
23.Where does the passage probably come from?
A.A sports magazine. B.A movie poster. C.A story book. D.An English newspaper.

Gourds (葫芦) have a history of 7,000 years in China. These special-shaped plants are used for cooking delicious dishes as well as making musical instruments. But today we are talking about the pyrography craft (烙画工艺) on gourds.
The craft originated during the Han Dynasty and entered its golden age during the Qing Dynasty. Many cities of China like Tianjin and Beijing are well-known for their production of such gourds. Take the craft from Beijing as an example. As the family’s fourth-generation inheritor (继承人) of Beijing’s gourd-pyrography craft, Niu Chengguo has been working hard on the craft for about 40 years. With his great love for beautiful things, Niu has kept improving his artistic skills and created many works of art.
“When I was a little boy, I was deeply touched by the lively patterns on gourds which were created by my grandpa. I began studying how to create the artworks under my grandpa when I was 11,” said Niu.
Niu’s efforts to improve his ability to create wonderful artworks paid off, as his works have become popular both at home and abroad. His artworks have sold well in many countries and regions in Southeast Asia, Europe and America. Many of his works have appeared in different cultural exchange activities held by the government of Beijing. As a result, the popularity of the gourd-pyrography craft has increased.
In 2014, Niu started Beijing Gourd Art Manor to provide a platform (平台) to help visitors enjoy the beauty of the gourd craft. “I just want to make the traditional pyrography craft known and liked by more people,” Niu said.
24.What can gourds be used for according to Paragraph 1?
A.Holding dishes. B.Making chairs.
C.Washing clothes. D.Creating artworks.
25.The underlined word “originated” ________ means in Chinese.
A.起源 B.改进 C.纪念 D.更新
26.What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the text?
A.To introduce an inheritor of traditional gourd-pyrography craft.
B.To describe the development of the gourd-pyrography craft.

35-year-old Xiao Shuyao is a Chinese sailor. In 2020, she finished sailing around the world with a sailboat.
Xiao’s story about sailing dates back to 2010, when she ran a beach bar in Sanya, Hainan Province. In 2014, Xiao closed her bar and took part in a yacht(帆船)race. She then had a dream of sailing around the world for the first time in her life.
Xiao started off from Turkey in June 2017 and completed the voyage (航行) in November 2020. She traveled through the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, and finally rounded the Cape of Good Hope (好望角). Xiao set a Chinese record of traveling 34,000 nautical miles. She reached more than 40 countries with her sailboat.
Xiao experienced lots of difficulties and dangers during the voyage, such as seasickness, pirates(海盗) with guns and bad weather. But Xiao says the beauty of sailing lies just in what looked impossible at first.
At the same time, she also went on land tours along the way. She shared stories about her trips and adventures. She introduced China’s unique (独特的) sailing culture. She also invited sailors from different countries and local people to drink Chinese tea and enjoy Chinese food on her boat. Many of them learned about China through her stories.
In this way, she hoped to spread traditional Chinese culture and show others the friendliness and kindness of Chinese people.
Now, Xiao is preparing for a non-stop round-the-world sailing alone. “I hope to tell more China’s stories through sailing to the world,” says Xiao.
27.How long did it take Xiao Shuyao to travel around the world?

As more people move away from petrol (汽油) cars, need for electric vehicles (EV) (电动汽车) is rising. It’s not just the cars on our roads. Buses and trucks are changing into battery power, too.
That’s great news for the environment. However, building enough charging stations for all these new EVs is a huge problem for many countries.
Detroit, in the United States, will soon be trying out an idea that could help. In the center of the city, there will soon be a main road that can wirelessly (无线) charge electric vehicles while they are running. No parking. No plugging in (插上插头). While the vehicles are on the road, they can get charged up.
Oren Ezer founded Electreon with his partner, which is the company behind the idea. He said, “The possibility of charging roads and cities is almost endless. We are reshaping the future of transportation.” It’s not just in Detroit. The company is already working on projects in some European countries, too.
Some mobile phones can charge wirelessly. You just place them on charging pad and the battery refills without needing to plug them in. Electreon’s road technology charger is similar to this idea. Coils (线圈) are fixed under the surface of the road. Electric vehicles are fitted with special receivers. When the vehicles drive over the coils, their batteries get power.
As well as helping encourage more people to use EVs, it’s hoped that the technology could allow for smaller batteries. The most expensive part of an EV is its battery. Trucks, for example, require big batteries so that enough charge can be stored to take a vehicle hundreds of kilometers before the next recharge. But if a vehicle could charge on the move, then a smaller battery might be all that’s needed.
Maybe, before too long, we will all be riding around in self-charging, self-driving cars.
30.According to the passage, what problem do many countries face with the rising need for EVs?
A.Wasting too much petrol. B.Having a few parking lots.
C.Being short of charging stations. D.Polluting the environment.
31.Which of the following best shows what Oren Ezer said?
A.It’s impossible to build roads that can charge EVs.
B.They are changing the shape of cars, buses and trucks.
C.They will make endless effort to improve roads.
D.There is a bright future for the idea of road charging.
32.________ is needed when the EVs get power on charging roads.
A.Parking B.A charging wire C.Plugging in D.A special receiver
33.Why does the writer write the passage?
A.To introduce a new idea on charging EVs.
B.To provide much information about EVs.
C.To encourage readers to buy and drive EVs.
D.To share a company behind the self-charging idea.

The hot pot is one of the most popular meals in China. The hot pot used to be preferred in winter, but recently it has been appearing on tables all year round.
The hot pot has delicious taste. There are two other important reasons for the Chinese to like the hot pot. The first one is that the hot pot is considered a great way to make new friends. People gather round the pot, chatting, eating, drinking and having fun. The other is that the hot pot is a “healthy meal”. Eating the hot pot can warm the body and improve circulation (血液循环) in winter.
There are several kinds of hot pots in China with different soup. Two of the most popular hot pots are Sichuan hot pot and Beijing mutton hot pot.
Sichuan hot pot is famous for its numbing and spicy (又麻又辣的) taste. Because of Sichuan pepper—and other spicy things like chili, makes it different from other hot pots. Beijing mutton hot pot is regarded as the representative of the northern China hot pots. Mutton is its main part, and the soup is made from lamb bones.
When you eat a hot pot in a restaurant, generally, there are two types of soup bases: spicy and clear. A clear soup base has a quite mild (温和的) taste, which is made from sea food or meat bones. A spicy soup base usually has Sichuan pepper, which is spicy and salty.
If you have a mixed group with some who don’t eat spicy food, there is a special pot with a divider (间隔) in the middle between the spicy and clear soup, which is called a double-flavor hot pot (鸳鸯锅).
