The first thing that Valoy saw when she put on color-blind corrective glasses was green — the vibrancy (活力) of the grass and tree — and later, the brilliance of red in stop signs and flowers. Valoy says it’s unbelievable and she has struggled with certain topics, especially the painting class in school and she would even paint the ocean purple before that.
Valoy wasn’t diagnosed with red-green color blindness until the fourth grade. “For the past 17 years I’ve lived in a ‘black and white movie’,” the recent Louis E. Dieruff High School graduate says. But not anymore. The transformative moment all started with a public speaking class Valoy took. After she made an informative speech about growing up with her color deficiency (缺陷), her teacher, Sandy Kile, was inspired to teach the class a more important life lesson.
Kile made a suggestion that the class should reach out to companies that produced corrective glasses to see if they would donate a pair to Valoy. While Kile encouraged Valoy to write a description of living in a world with mostly shades of grey and brown, her classmates wrote accompanying statements about why she needed the glasses. “I didn’t expect much for that,” Valoy says. “Professor Kile truly believed it was going to happen but we were not sure.”
It wasn’t so surprising when the first company turned down their request. Then, the class received reply from the founder of Pilestone Inc., offering Valoy and six other commumity members his glasses for free. “We started this business by trying to make some difference to people,” founder Ben Zhuang says.
Valoy is grateful to Kile and her classmates for their efforts. But Kile says that she is very glad the students have the chance to realize the significance of lending a hand to those in need, and that being able to aid Valoy in changing her life is something she will never forget the rest of her life.
    4. Why is Valoy’s painting class mentioned?
    A. To stress her serious attitude to study. B. To stop people from having color blindness.
    C. To support wearing collective glasses. D. To give an example of her sufferings.
    5. How did Valoy feel when Kile advised to apply for the corrective glasses for her?
    A. Satisfied. B. Uncertain. C. Negative. D. Thankful.
    6. What do we know about Valoy?
    A. She wasn’t the only one to get the glasses.
    B. She only understood black and white movies.
    C. She delivered a speech to call for donation.
    D. She didn’t know her problem until she was 17.
    7. What did Kile try to teach the class?
    A. The benefit of technology. B. The power of friendship.
    C. The value of offering help. D. The magic of creativity.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C

Imagine yourself sitting in a cafe one day in your hometown, when on the next table you hear some people speaking English with a strong North American accent (口音)Being a friendly person, you smile and say, “Hi! Are you American?” “No,” comes the quick answer. “Canadian!” Calling an English-speaking Canadian an American can be as bad as telling a Scotsman that he’s English or a Swiss person that he’s German. Although they have a common language, there are differences in culture and national feeling. “No,” many Canadians will tell you with confidence, “we’re not Americans! We’re Canadians.”
About 80% of Canadians live within 150 kilometers of the US border (国界), and this has had a detrimental influence on the Canadian economy. Like most European countries, Canada has a good national health service, and a good social service, but the good services have to be paid for by high taxes(税). Because of this, hundreds of thousands of Canadians often get in their cars and drive over to the USA to go shopping. This is one cause of economic problems in Canada. Over half of Canada’s products that are brought in from other countries come from the United States.
But the American influence is not just a question of shopping. Lots of Canadians drive American cars, and cars are, almost as important in Canada as they are in the USA. There is television too.
While Quebecers watch their own French-language TV stations, English-speaking Canadians have a choice between local English-speaking television stations, national programmes from CBC, and many American television stations. Unless they want to watch local stations, they’re just as likely to choose one of the big American television stations which include many different types of programmes as they are to a Canadian television station.
    8. What does the author want to tell us in the first paragraph?
    A. Canadians can speak many languages.
    B. Canadians have a strong national feeling.
    C. Canadians are generally friendly to foreigners.
    D. Canadians have a lot in common with Americans.
    9. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Timely. B. Special. C. Unexpected. D. Bad.
    10. What can we learn about Canada?
    A. The cost of living in Canada is quite high
    B. Canada only has a few French programmes.
    C. The service industries of Canada are famous.
    D. Canada produces fewer cars than America.
    11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
    A. A nation of high taxes
    B. What is Canadians’ lifestyle?
    C. How is Canada influenced by the US?
    D. The differences between Canada and the US’

由文章第一段“Calling an English-speaking Canadian an American can be as bad as telling a Scotsman that he’s English or a Swiss person that he’s German. Although they have a common language, there are differences in culture and national feeling. ‘No,’ many Canadians will tell you with confidence, ‘we’re not Americans! We’re Canadians.’(把一个说英语的加拿大人称为美国人,就像告诉一个苏格兰人他是英国人或者告诉一个瑞士人他是德国人一样糟糕。虽然他们有共同的语言,但在文化和民族情感上存在差异。‘不,’许多加拿大人会自信地告诉你,’我们不是美国人!我们是加拿大人。’)”可知,加拿大人有强烈的民族感情。故选B项。
    【9题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第二段“Because of this, hundreds of thousands of Canadians often get in their cars and drive over to the USA to go shopping. This is one cause of economic problems in Canada. Over half of Canada’s products that are brought in from other countries come from the United States.(正因为如此,成千上万的加拿大人经常坐上汽车,开车去美国购物。这是加拿大经济问题的一个原因。加拿大一半以上从其他国家进口的产品来自美国。)”可知,加拿大人经常去美国购物,很多产品都来自美国,这对加拿大本土经济有“很坏”的影响。所以猜测detrimental是“糟糕的,很坏的”的意思。故选D项。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第二段“Like most European countries, Canada has a good national health service, and a good social service, but the good services have to be paid for by high taxes(税). (与大多数欧洲国家一样,加拿大拥有良好的国家卫生服务和良好的社会服务,但良好的服务必须由高税收支付。)”可知,在加拿大的税收是很高的,从而可以推断出他们的生活成本也很高。故选A项。
由文章第三段“But the American influence is not just a question of shopping. Lots of Canadians drive American cars, and cars are, almost as important in Canada as they are in the USA. There is television too.(但美国的影响力不仅仅是购物的问题。许多加拿大人驾驶美国汽车,汽车在加拿大几乎和在美国一样重要。还有电视。)”以及结合上下文可知,文章主要介绍了美国对加拿大人在日常生活方面的影响。故选C项。

Imagine a world without insects. It might sound good at first without creepy-crawly bugs and annoying flies in your apartment. However, the consequences would be disastrous.
The number of insects has dropped by more than half in the past decades, according to British biologist Dave Goulson, author of Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse. As insects make up most of the known species on this planet, this data is not good news.
Insects are indeed on the path to extinction, according to the first global scientific review of insect population decline, which was published in the journal Biological Conservation in January 2019. The researchers say intensive agriculture has been the main cause of the decline. Pesticides (杀虫剂), in particular, destroy insect habitats. Urbanization and climate change are also significant factors. “Unless we convert our ways of producing food, insects will go down the path of extinction in a few decades.”
What would happen to Earth without insects? It’s almost impossible to predict but the consequences would be far—reaching. We need insects to pollinate (授粉) crops, recycle plant and animal material, keep the soil healthy and much more. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat, and the predators (捕食者) of those animals would go hungry as well. The ecosystem would be thrown off balance.
“If insect species losses cannot be halted, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet’s ecosystems and for the survival of mankind,” said Sanchez-Bayo, one of the authors of the review. The first step to halt this process is “to engender a society that values the natural world, both for what it does for us and for its own sake”, Sanchez—Bayo suggests. “The obvious place to start is with our children, encouraging environmental awareness from an early age.”
    12. What’s people’s general impression of insects?
    A. Quite unpleasant. B. Very interesting.
    C. Extremely helpful. D. Unexpectedly disastrous.
    13. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Change. B. Abandon. C. Expand. D. Simplify.
    14. Why are insects so important to Earth according to this article?
    A. Insects ensure the earth’s diversity.
    B. Insects maintain the earth ecosystem.
    C. Insects make the soil dry and healthy.
    D. Insects help slow down climate change.
    15. What can we do to stop insect species losses according to Sanchez-Bayo?
    A. Exploit nature in a gentle way.
    B. Change our way of producing food.
    C. Educate younger generation to be aware of it.
    D. Provide insects with enough habitats and food.
A 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据“Imagine a world without insects. It might sound good at first without creepy-crawly bugs and annoying flies in your apartment.(想象一个没有昆虫的世界。一开始可能听起来不错,公寓里没有令人毛骨悚然的虫子和恼人的苍蝇)”可知,虫子给人的印象是毛骨悚然以及恼人即人们讨厌这些虫子。故选A。
根据“The researchers say intensive agriculture has been the main cause of the decline. Pesticides (杀虫剂), in particular, destroy insect habitats. Urbanization and climate change are also significant factors.(研究人员表示,集约化农业是造成昆虫灭绝的主要原因。特别是农药,破坏昆虫的栖息地。城市化和气候变化也是重要因素)”可知,昆虫灭绝的原因之一:农业上杀虫剂的使用,以及下文“Unless we convert our ways of producing food, insects will go down the path of extinction in a few decades.(除非我们________生产食物的方式,否则昆虫将在几十年内灭绝)”,根据unless(除非)以及下文“our ways of producing food(我们生产粮食的方式))”可知,减少或不使用农药可以避免昆虫灭绝,即在农业方式——粮食生产方式做出改变。故选A。
根据“We need insects to pollinate (授粉) crops, recycle plant and animal material, keep the soil healthy and much more. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat, and the predators (捕食者) of those animals would go hungry as well. The ecosystem would be thrown off balance.(我们需要昆虫授粉(授粉)作物,回收植物和动物材料,保持土壤健康等等。没有昆虫,许多动物将没有吃的,食肉动物(捕食者)的动物也会挨饿。生态系统将失去平衡)”可知,昆虫在农业上帮助授粉,保持土壤健康,为捕食者提供食物,如果没有昆虫,整个生态链会受影响。故选B。
    【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据“The obvious place to start is with our children, encouraging environmental awareness from an early age.( 很明显,我们应该从孩子开始,从小就鼓励他们有环保意识)”可知Sanchez—Bayo的建议是从儿童教育做起,提高人们的环保意识。

根据下文“Because you move more slowly on a bike, you have a chance to really sink into your environment, observing wildlife and views that you might miss otherwise.”(因为你骑自行车走的比较慢,所以你有机会真正融入你的环境,观察野生动物和你可能错过的景色。)
根据下文“If you have unskilled bikers or kids in your group, you’ll probably all be happiest if you keep your mile goals fairly modest. But a group of more experienced bikers can make more serious mile goals.”(如果你的团队里有不熟练的自行车手或孩子,那么骑行里程的目标定的很低的话,你可能会感到快乐。
根据上文“An easy way to travel is to camp along the way. You can book campsites ahead of time at campgrounds along the way, and ride into camp as late as you like.”(一个简单的旅行方式是沿途露营。 以及下文“Invest in a light-weight tent, and light-weight inflatable pads (充气垫) under your sleeping bag.”(投资一个轻便的帐篷和你的睡袋下面的轻便的充气垫。)
根据上文“If you’re going to be traveling on trails (小径), you’ll want to ride a mountain bike during your trip. On the other hand, if your route is wholly along roads, you can ride a lighter-weight street bike. Or, you can put heavier-weight tires on a street bike.”(如果你打算在小路上旅行,你会想在旅途中骑辆山地车。

    A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect.
