Live with roommates? Have friends and family around you? Chances are that if you’re looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.
I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household.
Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.
Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn’t need. Since I had my own toiletries (洗漱用品), I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.
As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged.
So here is my advice: Lead by action.
24.What do the underlined words “jump on that bandwagon” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Share an apartment with you. B.Join you in what you’re doing.
C.Transform your way of living. D.Help you to make the decision.
25.What was the attitude of the author’s father toward buying groceries with jars?
A.He disapproved of it. B.He was favorable to it.
C.He was tolerant of it. D.He didn’t care about it.
26.What can we infer about the author?
A.She is quite good at cooking. B.She respects others’ privacy.
C.She enjoys being a housewife. D.She is a determined person.
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to get on well with other family members.
B.How to have one’s own personal space at home.
C.How to live a zero waste lifestyle in a household.
D.How to control the budget when buying groceries.
    C
Amazing and perfectly beautiful, The Midnight Library is everything you’d expect from the genius storyteller, Matt Haig. I picked it up from our readers’ recommendations (we asked our readers to send in some of their favorite recent books) and I can see why it won Best Fiction of 2020 in the Good Reads Choice Awards.
The story follows Nora Seed, a woman who is struggling and feels like nothing in her life has gone according to plan. While the initial chapters of the book are quite sad, Nora finds herself given a chance to start over in the Midnight Library, a magical place full of books of all the different paths her life could have taken. Nora is forced to stay in the library and try out different versions of her life until she finds the life she most wants to live.
I loved the idea that no dream or fork in your road is insignificant, and that they all lead us to become different versions of ourselves. In one life, Nora is an Olympic swimmer. In another, she is a glaciologist living on a boat off the coast of Antarctica. The novel reveals in a beautiful way that the potential we all have within us is impossible to measure, and that we have the possibility to be happy in many different versions of life.
It also discusses how dangerous it can be to live your life with regrets. The Midnight Library revealed to Nora that even if you make very different choices, you may uncover a deeper appreciation for your current home and the people in your life. It is your perspective that matters.
I really loved the fantasy and magical realism in this novel, and I would love for this to be turned into a series where we get to explore The Midnight Library of other characters’ lives as well.
28.What can we know about the author of the text?
A.He should be an editor. B.He is the friend of Matt Haig.
C.Magical realism books are his favorite. D.He shares a similar experience with Nora.
29.What does The Midnight Library mainly discuss?
A.A magic library. B.The harm of regret.
C.The exploration of life. D.Ways to make correct choices.
30.Where can the text be found?
    A.In a novel. B.In a magazine. C.In a history book. D.In a biography.
31.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To thank readers who introduced the book. B.To honour Matt Haig, the author of the book.
C.To share the author’s opinions on the book. D.To publicize the book to people who are struggling.
    D
No one can resist the temptation (诱惑) of snacks. But at the same time, you may be underestimating how many calories a snack contains. What would happen if you had a bag of crisps (炸薯片) a day? Hugo added,“If we had fewer cues to snacks, or were pushed to buy fewer high calorie snacks, we should be able to see real change.”New rules coming into force next month will restrict promotions on foods high in fat, sugar and salt in big shops.
    32. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?
    A. List some reasons. B. Introduce the topic.
    C. Put up an argument. D. Raise a question.
    33. What can we know from the survey?
    A. One in ten people cut 200 calories a day.
    B. Many people knew how many snacks they ate.

    D. Most people lacked the awareness of snacks’ impact.

Mo was waiting outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day. Physics was first and she hated physics, it was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything!
“Hi, Mo, it’s your favourite exam today!” said Nima as she arrived. Terry looked back again. “What’s wrong with her?” said Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Mo. “But she looks absent-minded and acts strangely these days. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then she ignored all my calls and texts!” said Mo angrily while going into the exam room.
Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting in the next row. Mo was surprised. Terry was holding her phone under the table and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades? She felt really angry at Terry and thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams. Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back at Mo and smiled sadly. “Stop writing and put your pens down” said Mr Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!
The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she didn’t feel good. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time. And I thought we were friends!” Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table. “Mr Reed...”
Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam that afternoon. Mo was feeling terrible. Why had she told Mr. Reed? But it was too late now. And anyway, Terry didn’t want to be her friend! Mr. Reed wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry was cheating in the exam.

    阅读A篇
B 22. A 23. D

根据UPS Road Code部分“UPS Road Code is a free national program that educates teens on safe driving techniques based in part on the training UPS uses for its own drivers, who are among the safe drivers worldwide.(UPS道路守则是一项免费的国家计划,旨在教育青少年安全驾驶技术,部分基于UPS对自己的司机进行的培训,这些司机属于全球安全司机之列)”可知,在UPS Road Code可以学到安全驾驶技术。故选A。

    阅读B篇
    【答案】24.B    25.A   26.D    27.C

根据第一自然段“No one can resist the temptation (诱惑) of snacks. But at the same time, you may be underestimating how many calories a snack contains. What would happen if you had a bag of crisps (炸薯片) a day? Eating an extra packet of crisps a day could lead to a weight gain of 6. 35 kg after a year, The Times reported.(没有人能抵抗零食的诱惑。但与此同时,你可能低估了一份零食所含的卡路里。如果你每天吃一包薯片会发生什么?每天多吃一包薯片会导致体重增加6磅。据《泰晤士报》报道,一年后体重达到35公斤。)”和第二段的“A survey of around 2 ,000 adults found that about three quarters underestimated the impact of what a small reduction could have.(一项针对约2000名成年人的调查发现,约四分之三的人低估了轻微减少可能带来的影响。)”
根据第二自然段“One in ten believed that cutting 200 calories a day would not affect weight. At the same time, many people didn’t seem to know exactly how many calories were in their snacks. (十分之一的人认为每天减少200卡路里不会影响体重。同时,许多人似乎不知道零食中到底有多少卡路里。)”可知,调查发现很多人缺乏对零食的危害的认识。故选D。
    【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三自然段“Can’t we resist buying snacks? The food environment is to blame. (我们难道不能抵制买零食吗?食物环境是罪魁祸首。)”可知,食物环境可能会导致人们购买更多的零食。故选A。
根据第一自然段“But at the same time, you may be underestimating how many calories a snack contains. (但与此同时,你可能低估了一份零食所含的卡路里。”和第二自然段“People underestimate the number of calories in their snacks, with experts warning that eating a bag of crisps every day could lead to a stone of weight gain in a year.

36.上文“I have the same 24 hours in a day as you do, but 1 have made specific choice that allow me to make the most of every day and still feel happy and relaxed.( 我和你一样,每天都有24小时,但我做了具体的选择,让我充分利用每一天,仍然感到快乐和放松)”说明作者做出选择,充分利用每一天,但仍旧感到快乐和轻松,根据下文段落小标题可知,下文就如何充分利用每一天给出了建议,因此空格处应是承上启下,F项中的“help you make the most of your time”与上文“to make the most of every day”一致,“tips”引出下文的建议,因此F项“也许这些建议会帮助你充分利用你的时间”符合语境,承上启下。故选F。
37.根据段落标题“Pick the most important.”可知,本段建议挑选最重要的,下文“Focus on spending time that for you is fun and productive.( 把时间花在那些对你来说有趣和富有成效的事情上)”说明要挑选一些有趣的和富有成效的事情去做,D项中的“what is meaningful in your life”与标题中的“the most important”一致,下文是对“Make choices”具体解释。

根据下文“You would think learning takes more time from you, but actually there are always new ways of doing things that can save you time on daily tasks, freeing you up for the most important. Always be looking for a new way to gain back an hour here or there. Always be looking for a new way to gain back an hour here or there. (你可能会认为学习需要花费了你更多的时间,但实际上总有一些新的方法可以为你节省出做日常事务的时间,为你腾出时间去做最重要的事情。寻找在这里或者那里赢回一个小时的新方法)”可推断,本段讲述学习虽然花费很多时间,但总是能有一些方法为你节省时间做其他事情,因此要做有效的学习者。因此推断B项“做有效的学习者”为段落标题,故选B。
40.下文“Every completion is a small victory that adds up in a big way.( 每一次的完成都是一个小的胜利,累积起来就是一个大的胜利)”说明事情要一件一件去做,G项中的“making lists”与之呼应,因此推断G项“这就是为什么列清单在任何生产手册中都很重要的原因”符合语境,this指代上文“The world won't come to an end in most cases just because you left a few things undone. Celebrate progress and keep refining (改进) toward a happy productive existence.( 在大多数情况下,世界不会因为你没做完几件事而走向末日。庆祝进步,不断改进走向一个快乐而富有成效的存在)”解释了列出清单一件一件完成任务的原因。故选G。
