Free Museums in London
With free museums, families can visit more than once. For big museums, e.g. British Museum, don’t try to see everything in one go. First visit, take a couple of hours to explore with kids, get familiar with the museum layout, and then return another day to see another part of the museum.
British Museum
The British Museum has on display fabulous goodies from the ancient world—Assyria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, plus prehistoric Europe. The “biggies” from ancient Greece are Parthenon sculptures—marble of horsemen, musicians, animals, elders, Greek gods. Don’t miss Assyrian reliefs and winged bulls, Sutton Hoo treasure with golden helmets and swords of 7th century Anglo-Saxon kings, and Egyptian mummies and colossal statues.
Science Museum
Explore galleries chock full of British airplanes, lunar spacecraft and full-size rockets, and early 19th century steam locomotives(车头) built in England—Stephenson’s Rocket and Puffing Billy. Little kids will have fun with water play and hands-on activities in the Garden. Movies in IMAX theater, flight simulators, and special exhibitions have fees.
National Galley
In the National Galley, kids will see famous paintings from all over Europe—Sunflowers by Van Gogh, The Virgin of the Rocks by Leonardo da Vinci, works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Raphael, Botticelli, Velasquez, French Impressionists. Also look for paintings by British artists—Thomas Gainsborough (super family portraits), J.M.W. Turner, George Stubbs (famous for his horse paintings).
Natural History Museum
The British are famous for their nature explorers—Charles Darwin, David Livingstone, Robert Scott, Captain Cook. This is a wide-ranging museum of the natural world including gold nuggets from Australia, emeralds, meteorites, fossils from Britain, extinct birds such as the dodo bird and saber-tooth cat, and large dinosaur gallery.
1. What can kids do in Science Museum?
A. See a movie in IMAX. theater free.
B. Admire ancient helmets made of gold.
C. Join in hands-on activities in the Garden.
D. Enjoy famous paintings by great artists.
2. Which museum may be the best choice for a kid interested in dinosaurs?

Sydney Raley has been working at McDonald’s for about seven months and it’s been her typical after-school job. When she headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.
In fact, that’s exactly how it started. But a few hours into her shift, things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food, Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy. Her daughter in the passenger seat looked terrified.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. For an instant, Sydney remembered the first aid training she had received more than four years earlier. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this (even most adults might, too). But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to call 911. Then, she drove through the drive-through window and came to the rescue.
The teen flung the driver’s side door open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she began to use the Heimlich maneuver(海姆立克急救法). However, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite working. Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot. She shouted for help, hoping that another person’s strength combined with hers, would help force whatever was in the woman’s mouth to finally come out. Next, a man who heard the call for help ran over and started using Heimlich with the woman. Fortunately, it worked and the woman spat out the food stuck in her throat. Needless to say, the woman was very grateful. Just as she began to catch her breath, first responders arrived on the scene, and when officers asked what happened, she told them all about Sydney’s heroic act. “They said, ‘Congratulations, you’re a lifesaver; you’re a hero.’” Sydney recalled.
4. What can we learn about Sydney from the first two paragraphs?
A. She is patient and confident. B. She is kind and knowledgeable.
C. She is hard-working and careful. D. She is generous and warm-hearted.
5. Where was the woman customer when she got choked?
A. She was in the car. B. She was on the street.
C. She was in the parking lot. D. She was in a restaurant.
6. What does the underlined “flung” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A. Pulled violently. B. Slipped gently.
C. Threw suddenly. D. Rushed hurriedly.
7. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. What happened to the woman.
B. How to do the Heimlich maneuver.
C. How the chocked woman was rescued.
D. Why Sydney failed to use the Heimlich maneuver.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. A 7. C

Imagine sitting in your house, when suddenly you receive a phone call through your shirt. You answer the call and converse with the person on the other end. Sound crazy? This might soon be possible because of a new research from engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their partners at Rhode Island School of Design.
These scientists have created a fabric that can hear sounds around you and inside your body. They published their research in the journal Nature. “Wearing such a shirt, you might talk through it to answer phone calls and communicate with others,” says lead author Wei Yan, a professor at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
To create the shirt, the team wove a flexible piezoelectric fiber (压电纤维) into fabric. Piezoelectric materials generate internal electrical charge from applied mechanical stress. When the fiber is exposed to sound waves, vibrations create electrical signals similar to how our ears work. The team wove the fibers in with a kind of traditional thread to create panels, which they then sewed into a shirt. They clapped at various angles away from the shirt, and found the fabric was able to detect the angle of the sound to within 1 degree at a distance of 3 meters away. They also tested whether clothes could act as a fabric stethoscope (听诊器) by sewing a single fiber into the inner part of a shirt, according to MIT. Yoel Fink, a co-author from MIT, says that this could be used in pregnant women’s clothes in the future.
The resulting fibers can pick up noises like human speech, birds singing, etc., and they can also make sounds louder, which could help those who are hard of hearing. This solution could also be used to help detect broken parts in buildings or be woven into a net to monitor fish, the researchers say.
According to Fink, their goal is to put other digital operations within fabric, including information storage and signal processing. “Computers are going to really become fabrics,” he says. “We’re getting very close.”
8. What can be the function of the fabric from the text?
A. It can read your mind. B. It can hear your heartbeat.
C. It can regulate your pulse. D. It can sense your feelings.
9. Why did the researchers clap at various angles away from the shirt?
A. To test how sensitive it is to surrounding sounds.
B. To figure out how effectively the panels function.
C. To make out if it is able to function as a stethoscope.
D. To test its ability to detect sound direction and distance.
10. What aspect of the fabric does the text focus on?
A. Its physical materials. B. Its possible applications.
C. Its potential problems. D. Its positive health benefits.
11. How do the researchers expect to deal with their fabric?
A. Make it available in the near future.
B. Use new-materials to make it durable.
C. Develop more digital operations within it.
D. Enable it to monitor users’ physical conditions.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. C

We’ve all been in a position where life gets busy, schedules are difficult to coordinate and connecting with friends feels harder than ever. With some friendships, we may lose touch and want to reconnect. However, the more time that passes, the more uncertain it can feel if they want to hear from us.
A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says it’s time to reach out. Researchers found numerous benefits when reaching out to friends and old acquaintances. Especially if you’re unsure of how well they’ll receive hearing from you. The study, led by Dr Peggy Liu, is called The Surprise of Reaching Out: Appreciated More Than We Think. In the study, researchers posed the question: Do people accurately understand how much other people value being reached out to by someone in their social circle? To answer this question, researchers carried out 13 experiments with more than 5,900 participants. In the experiments, researchers measured how much people estimated their friends or acquaintances would appreciate them reaching out versus how much those on the receiving end did appreciate it. They also examined different forms of communication-phone calls, texts, emails, notes or even small gifts—and their impact.
Over the series of experiments, experts discovered a similar trend: those reaching out significantly underestimated how much their friends would appreciate hearing from them. Plus, the more unexpected the communication was, the more the friend on the receiving end appreciated it. “People are fundamentally social beings and enjoy connecting with others,” the researchers wrote.
In fact, what made these moments of reaching out so impactful was the effort they showed—no matter the form of communication. Dr Amie Gordon, a social psychologist at the University of Michigan, emphasises the importance of small moments and making efforts in relationships in a Psychology Today article. “In a busy life, these little moments might feel just like that—little moments that don’t really matter ... But each moment we ignore is a missed opportunity to connect and build up an emotional bank of positive moments.”
The science is clear—people appreciate the effort we put into our friendships. And we greatly underestimate it. One phenomenon that may explain why those who reached out underestimated their positive impact is because of “the liking gap”. Psychologist Terri Apter writes in Psychology Today that the liking gap is a tendency to “how we often underestimate other’s responses to us”, and the reality that other people like us more than we may think.
12. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ______.
A. state some disturbing problems
B. present the background of the following topic
C. introduce the theme of his argument
D. make comparisons between different opinions
13. What could be inferred from the experiments according to the text?
A. The way of communication matters in reconnecting with friends.
B. An unexpected calling to an acquaintance will not be highly valued.
C. People tend to appreciate hearing from friends more than reaching out to them.
D. We are more well-liked and well-received than we expect in our friendships.
14. Why does the author mention Dr. Amie Gordon in paragraph 4?
A. To present the discovery of the study.
B. To support the findings theoretically.
C. To explain the causes of losing friendships.
D. To make suggestions about the topic.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Estimate Friendships in a Scientific Way
B. Appreciate Being Reached Out to by friends
C. Remove the Misunderstanding between Friends
D. Don’t Hesitate to Reconnect with Your Old Friends

【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段内容“We’ve all been in a position where life gets busy, schedules are difficult to coordinate and connecting with friends feels harder than ever. With some friendships, we may lose touch and want to reconnect. However, the more time that passes, the more uncertain it can feel if they want to hear from us.(我们都处于这样的境地:生活变得忙碌,日程很难协调,与朋友联系比以往任何时候都更难。对于一些友谊,我们可能会失去联系,想要重新联系。然而,时间过得越久,我们就越不确定他们是否想要我们的消息。)”可知,我们之所以不和老朋友联系,是因为我们不确定他们是否想要我们的消息。而第二段“A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says it’s time to reach out. Researchers found numerous benefits when reaching out to friends and old acquaintances. Especially if you’re unsure of how well they’ll receive hearing from you.(最近发表在《人格与社会心理学杂志》上的一项研究表明,是时候向别人伸出友谊之手了。研究人员发现,与朋友和老熟人联系有很多好处。尤其是当你不确定他们会如何接受你的消息时。)”则告诉我们,老朋友希望我们和他们联系,多联系是有好处的。所以,第一段是介绍了本文主题的背景。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“The study, led by Dr Peggy Liu, is called The Surprise of Reaching Out: Appreciated More Than We Think.(佩吉·刘博士领导的这项研究被称为“伸出手的惊喜:比我们想象的更感激”。)”以及第三段“Over the series of experiments, experts discovered a similar trend: those reaching out significantly underestimated how much their friends would appreciate hearing from them. (在一系列实验中,专家们发现了一个类似的趋势:那些主动联系朋友的人严重低估了朋友对他们的感激程度。)”可知,在友谊中,我们比我们预想的更受欢迎。故选D。

It was a sunny summer morning, the breeze blowing gently. As planned, Jackson took a trip into the remote wilds near Olom Village, in the Sakha Republic, Russia. His four-year-old daughter, Karina, found him leaving and wanted to follow him to give her dad a surprise. She slipped out of the house, with nobody realizing it, even Jackson.
Unfortunately, she walked too slowly on her way and soon she was lost in the vast, dangerous Siberian wilderness. Luckily for her, her dog, Naida, followed Karina just as the girl followed her father. The two suddenly found themselves walking with no one in sight, drifting away from their home as the hours went by.
Night fell. Karina’s father returned home, and it didn’t take long after that for the whole family to realize what had happened. They couldn’t find Karina anywhere. They turned to the police for help immediately. And they took action at once in search of the lost girl.
A whole week had gone by and there was no progress of the rescue in sight. The whole family was stuck in desperation, but Karina’s mum never lost hope. “Many stopped believing that she was alive, but as a mother I felt that she would be found soon.”
In fact, Karina did survive. Although Siberia is an extremely dangerous place even for otherwise fit adults due to its wildlife and climate, she made it. She survived by eating wild fruits and drinking water from nearby rivers, and she faced the freezing nighttime temperatures by cozying up in a bed of grass. Naida did its best too, scaring away the wild animals and keeping each other warm by sleeping close together at night.
After nine days struggling to survive, scared and alone, Karina could only be grateful about one thing: her good friend was by her side. Naida gave its strength, and actively helped the four-year-old to stay alive for that long.
This morning, Naida suddenly walked away and headed back into town, ignoring Karina’s hopeless cry and leaving her completely alone.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Naida did what it could to lead the rescue team to where Karina was.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】This morning, Naida suddenly walked away and headed back into town, ignoring Karina’s hopeless cry and leaving her completely alone. The poor little girl cried with fear, tears blurring her eyes. She curled up in a tight ball, wondering what was waiting for her. At the same time, Naida found its way back home. When Karina’s mum saw it, she was excited, hugging it tightly with tears filling her eyes. She was more convinced that Karina was still alive. The rescue efforts were restarted, giving hope to the family.
Naida did what it could to lead the rescue team to where Karina was. With the help of her sharp smelling, the rescuer spotted the little girl in an overgrown grassy field. Karina was lying there, hiding herself from danger and keeping herself warm. On seeing her beloved friend back, Karina cuddled it close, whispering in its ears. “I know you won’t abandon me. Thanks for your always being with me!” How Naida protected Karina is indeed an amazing proof to the friendship that our four-legged friends can show.
