    I enjoy throwing stuff away. I'd love to go full minimalism (极简主义), but my wife and two teenage kids do not share my dream of a house with almost nothing in it. I have tried. When the kids were litle, I taught them my two favorite games“Do We Need It?" and “Put It in Its Place"and made them play every few months. Their enthusiasm never mathed mine.

    If I'm going to be honest, my own tidying skills are not as great as I'd like. My “discarded" pile is never quite the trash mountain I want because I make up excuses for why things are useful. I consider this unhealthy. I want to be better at moving on.

    So, this time I found helpthe classics for people like me: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. Kondo's commitment to her craft is astonishing. Her philosophy is only to keep things you love. Can I go full Kondo? I will try. One central idea is to clean by category. You start by collecting all clothes and gathering them together for consideration. It makes you rethink how you organize. Next, hold each item and ask if it brings you joy. This way you' re choosing what to keep. And that's how I find myself with all my clothes on my bedroom floor. My wife walks by and gives me a look that says I'm nuts. She's probably not wrong.

    Somewhere near the bottom of this chaos is my special jacket. I move through the pile: pants, shirts, suits and shoes. Then my last category: jackets. I haven't worn the thing in about 30 years. Somehow, it has survived. Now that I'm striving to follow Kondo- surely, its time has come?

    I hold it in my hand. There is a tear just below the collar that widens as I hold it. It's literally falling apart. Will I ever wear it again? Not a chance. Does it feel good to wear? Does it bring me joy? Actually, yes. At this moment, my daughter walks in. She askss about the jacket. I tell her the story. She thinks I should keep it It's cool and unique and full of memories. She is arguing that nostalgia (怀念) is the very reason.

    I'm not entirely convinced by my daughter's arguments. I believe in looking ahead, not backward. Nevertheless, sometimes it's hard to let go. So I gently place the jacket on the “keep” pile.

    Re-entering the workforce after a long absence is often a difficult path. The longer you're out, the harder it can be to get back in. For years, companies like Goldman Sachs have offered return-to- work programs as a way to help workers go back into the workforce after a long break. Returnshipsas they are often called, offer training and networking opportunities to workers- usually mothers- who've been out of the workforce for an extended period of time. More recently, there's been growing interest from companies in starting this type of program.

    Goldman Sachs' returnship program requires applicants to have been out of the workforce for two years or more. “We knew the interview process would need to look different," said Kelley Berlin, Grubhub's chief human resources officer. “We couldn't view them based on their current technology skills. We had to look at their performance level and potential.' The first week of Goldman Sachs' 12-week program focuses on training, followed by an apprenticeship(学徒期) in one of the bank's divisions. The participants are paired with a manager, a coach and previous returnees. On average, the company gets about 1,000 applications yearly for its program and accepts 25 to 30. Roughly 75% of those who go through the program get extended offers elsewhere to become flltime employees. Participants are paid S40 an hour during the returmship and the salaries of the full-time positions offered after the program are $ 100,000 or above.

    The audio storytelling company Audible started its returnship program during the pandemic(疫情).“We felt that starting during the pandemic would be best because we would be able to support many jobless caregivers and their families caused by the pandemic,” said Anne Emi, Audible's Chief People Officer. “Knowing that it was very hard for professionals taking caregiving career breaks to re-enter the workforce, we knew it would be much more diffcult during the pandemic. But we were so impressed with what our program brought to the table. In a year or two, we will be growing the class by three times and bringing in 100 apprentices to join the business.”

    The term “social distancing” has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it's not “social" distance we are trying to promote. It's physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties- even at a distance- is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review done in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.

    Given this fact, how might we best stay connected to others while maintaining physical distance? Would we be better off e-mailing a friend? Making a phone call? Seting up a video chat? In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact afcts their sense of connection- and how expectations about certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use.

    In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn't interacted with recently, either through e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they reached out in these two ways. They generally believed that they'd feel more connected when interacting via the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they'd rather send an e-mail than call the person up. Fears about awkwardness, it seems, push individuals toward text-based methods for communicating.

    In the next part of the experiment, we had participants actually reconnect using one randomly determined mode of communication and then followed up with them after they had done so. We found that people do form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone.

    The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or setting up a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard.

    Then I threw myself into as many basketball opportunities as I could find. Every day, I insisted on running 10 kilometers and jumping ropes 1000 times after school to increase my energy level and physical strength. Additionally, I practiced passing, dribbling and shooting with my friends every day to improve my basketball skills.
