It is not always easy to know what food to order at restaurants. But a new company Kabaq in New York is hoping to help. The company offers menu items in augmented(增强的)reality. The technology places computer-generated images into the user's view of the real world.

At Vino Levantino wine bar in New York City, the desserts are tasty but many visitors may have never heard of them. Instead of explaining the traditional Middle Eastern sweet to restaurant visitorsowner Haim Amit shows them. The Kabaq's augmented reality application displays models of the desserts in 3-D on an iPad. Customers at each table use an iPad to explore the desserts.

Alper Guler is the founder of Kabaq. “Humans are visual creatures, and we are creating really realistic 3-D food models.” The technology company is helping diners decide what to eat and making traditional menus more modern. Guler and his team visit restaurants to capture 3-D images of dishes. They place dishes on a turning table inside a photo box and the camera scans the dishes from all sides.

“We have special equipment that stands here, shooting a bunch of pictures at the same time. So, as the table turns, our system takes all the pictures along the way. And we go back to our office and basically start processing all of these images. ”For their services, Kabaq charges $99- $ 199 per month.

Amit says the technology is not only increasing profits at his restaurant but offering customers a special experience. “It’s not just the sale—the sales grow like about 22 percent overall on average—but the experience with customers is different—they didn't expect it and they really like it.”

Amit says he has noticed how excited his customers are about it. It's amazing.

    24. How do customers in Haim Amit's bar know about an unfamiliar dessert?

    A. By searching the bar’s website. B. By turning to an app.

    C. By looking at pictures on traditional menus. D. By asking the waiters for help.

    25. What inspired Alper Guler to invent the 3-D menus?

    A. Humans’ habit of making eating decisions. B. Love for delicious food.

    C. Request from consumers. D. An unpleasant dining experience.

    26. What does Amit think of the invention?

    A. It is far from satisfactory. B. It proves food is No. 1 for the people.

    C. It kills two birds with one stone. D. It inspires other restaurants to follow.

    27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. Technology Promotes Traditional Food

    B. 3-D Images Show Process of Food Making

    C. Technology Brings 3-D Images to Food Menus

    D. Traditional Menus Will Be Replaced by 3-D Ones

    C

“Robots are ready to replace millions of humans in various industries. But they're nowhere close to being human-like,” said Blake Hannaford, a robotics professor at the University of Washington in Seattle.

So far, robots don't really look or act like the sensitive beings described throughout science fiction. Rather, these basic machines are tasked with carrying out simple tasks that promote productivity around the workplace or factory. We are still decades away from a future where robots carry out more difficult and meaningful tasks.

But other aspects continue to have a significant influence on robotics. Robots are already performing some human functions. In everyday terms, that means your smartphone can do more with the same battery life. It also means quicker advances in artificial intelligence—things like computer vision and natural language processing that help robots “see” and learn.

Going forward, Hannaford said, robots will “free up people's brains” to perform other, more complex tasks. “There’s going to be a lot of people who fall by the wayside,” he said of the countless jobs that will be automated or disappear entirely.

More than 120 million workers worldwide (11.5 million in the U.S.) will need retraining just in the next few years due to replacement caused by artificial intelligence and robots, according to a recent IBM Institute for Business Values study. Not all of them will get that retraining, of course, but the ones who do will be more likely to gain new types of jobs brought by the robot revolution.

But some experts say the more robots surpass humans, the more humans will be expected to keep up.

“The way we have to start thinking about robots is not as a threat, but as something that we can work with in a co-operative way,” Hannaford said. “A lot of it is changing our own attitudes.”

    28. What can we infer from what Hannaford said?

    A. Robots will help make life easier for all of us.

    B. We'll see some jobs taken over entirely by robots.

    C. Robots are at a stage of being human-like.

    D. It is likely that we will be wiped out by robots.

    29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. Robots in science fiction closely resemble us.

    B. Robots can carry out complex actions automatically.

    C. Humans will be replaced by robots in the near future.

    D. The development of robots has a long way to go.

    30. What does the underlined word “surpass” in paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A. Complete fewer tasks than. B. Do better than.

    C. Make more mistakes than. D. Get more retraining than.

    31. What attitude should we have towards robots according to Hannaford?

    A. Positive. B. Opposed.

    C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.

    D

It has now been one year since The Ocean Cleanup made history by cleaning up the first of the plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch(垃圾带). And now, its researchers are turning the waste into designer sunglasses. Not only are the stylish glasses made from the plastic collected, but the earnings go toward helping support the nonprofit so they can continue cleaning up the ocean.

The new glasses are the first product to be created from the recovered ocean waste, but The Ocean Cleanup website says it will not be the last. Back in October 2019,after years of research, The Ocean Cleanup project announced that their System 001/B had successfully collected plastic waste from the garbage patch. The system uses the natural forces of the ocean to gather plastic in the garbage patch, a process that was first brought up by Boyan Slat back in October 2012.

Together with famous designer Yves Behar, and Safilo, The Ocean Cleanup worked to create sunglasses that could produce a feeling or memory of the ocean, reminding people where they came from and what they are protecting. The frames(框架)of the new sunglasses are made from the recovered ocean pollution. Because the joining points have also been specially designed, they can very quickly be taken apart for recycling.

Although the sunglasses cost $199 a pair, all of the money earned from them will be used to fund the nonprofit' s operations. For every pair sold, the organization will be able to clean 24 football-fields-worth of ocean garbage. And since the glasses went on sale earlier last week, supporters have already funded more than 133 , 100 football fields of garbage.

“When every pair is bought up from the first batch(批)of sunglasses we can then clean 500,000 football fields worth of plastic,” says the website. “That means we can use this garbage to clean more garbage: going full circle, over and over, until we have achieved our purpose of clean oceans.

    32. What was The Ocean Cleanup's System 001/B used to do?

    A. Collect information of the ocean. B. Monitor the garbage patch.

    C. Gather plastic waste. D. Sort ocean waste.

    33. Which of the following is a characteristic of the new sunglasses?

    A. They are green in color. B. They can be easily recycled.

    C. They can help find ocean pollution. D. They have more joining points than others.

    34. What does the author imply in paragraph 4?

    A. The price of the sunglasses should be lower.

    B. The money will be used to build football fields.

    C. The Ocean Cleanup is in need of financial support.

    D. Buying the sunglasses can help reduce ocean waste.

    35. Which section of a website is the text most probably taken from?

    A. Fashion. B. Lifestyle. C. Technology. D. Environment.

It is not always easy to know what food to order at restaurants. But a new company Kabaq in New York is hoping to help. The company offers menu items in augmented(增强的)reality. The technology places computer-generated images into the user's view of the real world.

At Vino Levantino wine bar in New York City the desserts are tasty but many visitors may have never heard of them.

    A. Positive. B. Opposed.

    C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.

    【答案】28. B    29. D    30. B    31. A

“When every pair is bought up from the first batch(批)of sunglasses, we can then clean 500,000 football fields worth of plastic,” says the website.

    【答案】32. C    33. B    34. D    35. D

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    【答案】One possible version:

    The Importance of Doing Housework

It’s widely known that Labor Education will be included in the education of middle schools in China. It’s out of the concern that Chinese youngsters do too little housework and belittle manual labor jobs.

According to a recent survey done among 45 middle school students, 10 of them do housework on a daily basis, 30 students do it often, while the other 5 never do it. Due to great academic pressure, schools tend to focus on the academic curriculum, and parents sometimes see household chores as distractions.

As far as I’m concerned, doing housework benefits students greatly. For one thing, it helps cultivate the right view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing physical labor. For another, it enables students to acquire basic working capabilities for livelihood and individual development as well as form good working habits.
