Yet my scientific cmmitments still held me. I was set t attend a cnference in New Zealand in early July. But n my way t the airprt, I gt the news that my mther had 1 r 2 years left. S I flew back t Madrid instead. I pstpned my Ph.D. defense. Meanwhile — in just 3 weeks — the rest f my mther’s life was changed t 1 year, then mnths, weeks, days. Cancer beat my mther at the end f July.
I am always srry fr lsing precius time with my mther. I had never slwed dwn befre, knwing what it takes t secure an academic psitin. Lsing my mther put things int perspective fr me. I saw the humane side f science in the understanding and flexibility ffered by my Ph.D. supervisr.
And the wrk I missed felt insignificant. I defended my thesis in September and mved t Tky later. I knw that many peple’s 2021 may feel like my 2019, with struggles and lsses cmpeting with career gals. Please, take my advice: If yur lved nes need yu nw, be there fr them. Vegemite (维吉米特黑酱) has been prduced in Prt Melburne since the 1920s, with the frmer Kraft factry recently given heritage prtectin. The Natinal Trust wanted the Vegemite smell that came frm the factry t be included in a “statement f significance” n the site. “The smell is an excellent example f intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage and allws the purpse f the building t be understd.”
Hwever, the City f Melburne cuncil stpped shrt f declaring the Vegemite smell “significant”. This is in an effrt t ensure n “future develpment f Fishermans Bend” is put in danger, said the mayr. The histric Fishermans Bend district is being transfrmed in a prject that will see the area huse up t 80,000 residents and hst tens f thusands f jbs.
He acknwledged the “attachment many peple have twards the special smell f the belved spread (酱)” that cmes frm the Fishermans Bend factry, but said the cuncil sught t avid tying “a smell t the nging use f the land”. “Vegemite might be the spread that starts the natin, but it shuldn't be the smell that stps the future develpment f Fishermans Bend.” But he said the smell wuld be recrded as a “recgnised part f the site's histry” in the City f Melburne's heritage study.
“We see this as an apprpriate utcme. We are pleased the smell will still be recgnised,” said Felicity Watsn, head f advcacy at the Natinal Trust. “Our campaign fr the smell t be recgnised is abut acknwledging that the significance f this place ges beynd the bricks f the factry building.”
The idea f recgnising smells as having heritage significance was unusual, Ms Watsn cnceded, and it was the first time the Trust had prpsed it in relatin t a heritage place.
Internatinally, hwever, the imprtance f intangible aspects f cultural heritage such as smell is being recgnised thrugh the emerging field f “lfactry (嗅觉的) heritage”. Ms Watsn said that in recent years cuntries such as Japan and France had acted t prtect areas f “fragrant scenery” and certain sunds and smells f the cuntryside.

Yu might text yur friend a white lie t get ut f ging t dinner, exaggerate yur height n a CV nline t appear mre attractive r invent an excuse fr yur bss ver email t save face.
Scial psychlgists have lng wndered where peple tend t lie the mst — that is, in persn r thrugh sme ther cmmunicatin medium. A 2004 study was amng the first t investigate the cnnectin between deceptin (欺骗) rates and technlgy. Jeff Hancck’s team had 28 students reprt the number f scial interactins they had thrugh face-t-face cmmunicatin, the phne, instant messaging and email ver seven days. Students als reprted the number f times they lied in each scial interactin.
The results suggested peple tld the mst lies n the phne and the fewest thrugh email, which is bradly in line with a “feature-based mdel”. Accrding t the mdel, specific aspects f a technlgy — whether peple can cmmunicate back and frth smthly, whether the messages are fleeting and whether cmmunicatrs are distant — predict where peple tend t lie the mst.
When Hancck cnducted his study, few students had a Facebk accunt. The iPhne was in its early stage. What wuld his results lk like nearly 20 years later?
In a new study, I recruited (招募) 250 peple and studied interactins frm mre frms f technlgy. The participants recrded their scial interactins and number f interactins with a lie ver seven days, acrss face-t-face cmmunicatin, scial media, the phne, texting, vide chat and email. The results shw peple seem t lie accrding t the “feature-based mdel”.
There are several pssible explanatins fr these results. Phne and vide chat, fr example, might make deceptin less cstly t a scial relatinship if caught. Deceptin rates might als differ acrss technlgy because peple use sme frms f technlgy fr certain scial relatinships. Fr example, peple might nly email their clleagues (同事), while vide chat might be a better fit fr mre persnal relatinships.
Peple ften believe just because we use technlgy t interact, hnesty is harder t cme by. Nt nly is this perceptin (看法) misguided, but it is als unsupprted by enugh evidence. The belief that lying is cmmn in the digital age just desn’t match the data.
32. What des the authr intend t d in the first paragraph?
A. Reveal the tendency f peple t tell lies n scial media.
B. Intrduce the tpic f technlgy’s rle in peple’s telling lies.
C. Demnstrate the increasing ppularity f scial media.
D. Illustrate peple’s ways f scial interactins.
33. What d the studies by Hancck and the authr have in cmmn?
A. Their participants were all students.
B. They bth aimed t reduce deceptin rates.
C. Their results were bth cnsistent with a certain mdel.
D. They analyzed the same kind f scial relatinships.
34. What can be inferred frm paragraph 6?
A. Scial media users tend t lie mre.
B. Clse peple are mre likely t lie t each ther.
C. Lying can greatly influence friendships.
D. Deceptin rates can be reduced by using technlgy.
35. What des the authr think f peple lying in scial interactins?
A. It is unacceptable amng friends.
B. It wrsens interpersnal relatinships.
C. It desn’t happen as frequently as expected.
D. It is in line with advances in technlgy
