The occasion in this evening was the return of a relative and his wife from working in Russia. Ayah and I joined the women in their separate place. All the aunts were present. On May 27,2020,Tselo,from the Tibetan ethnic group, alongside eight other members of the Chinese national mountaineering team(国家登山队)for the mapping and surveying of the elevation(高度)of Qomolangmareached the highest peak in the world.

“We failed twice before.” said Tselo, the team's captain, at the recent launch ceremony of the book Approach the Summit of the Earth in Beijing.

With detailed maps and graphics, it provides a fascinating insight into Qomolangma, and its new height, and tells the history of China's surveying and mapping of the mountain. Readers can also scan QR codes on the pages, accessing audio, video and a virtual reality 3D map.

“Last year, when we were planning the book, we wanted to present the region using the logic of Earth System Science. Now we are happy to see this book tell a good story about a complete system of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands, sand and ice,”  says An, a director on the book's editorial board.

Humans started exploring the peak in 1921 by British mountaineers. The book covers the moment when Chinese people first set foot on the top of the mountain in 1960 and other important moments featuring mountaineers from all over the world.

It also records the start of China's surveying and mapping of Qomolangma, which began during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911),all the way to the most accurate ever recording of its 8,848.86-meter elevation in 2020.

“It's a big honour for us because, even though we often climb mountains, it's not often we get to work on a scientific investigation,”Tselo  says.  “We encountered a lot of difficulties during the climb but thinking about our predecessors(前辈)in the 1960s,'70s and 80swe were inspired by the spirit that helped them overcome the difficulties that, nowadays, we cannot imagine.”

“We hope that the book will provide a window through which readers can learn about Qomolangma and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, be a link between science and society, and make a bigger contribution to protecting the third pole and the harmonious coexistence of people and nature,”  says Chen Ping, general manager of the book's publisher.

When we buy something new we get rid of whats old. That cycle of consumption(消费) has made electronics waste the world's fastest-growing solid-waste stream, which is expected to grow as the world upgrades(升级)to 5G

While promising faster speeds and other benefits, 5G will result in a sharp increase in e-waste. That's good business for ERI, which charges customers to collect their electronics and to securely wipe their data. But less than a quarter of U. S. electronic waste is recycled, the rest ending up as rubbish, posing environmental risks.

Part of the problem concerns laws. In states without laws banning electronics from the regular trash, electronics often end up in garbage and recycling bins. Even when e-waste rules exist, it’s left to consumers to handle their old devices properly. But recycling them can be a pain. Rather than drop a used phone in a bin, lots of people have to take their electronics to a store, which may pay them for it or charge them to get rid of it. Many consumers simply throw their devices into the trash or throw them in a drawer.

One solution is to make electronics last as long as they once did. Yet, technology companies are speeding the pace of being deserted. “It's a strategy by producers to force us into shorter upgrade cycles,” said Kyle Wiens, the founder of iFixit, which publishes do-it-yourself repair guides.

Some environmental groups say big companies like Apple and Samsung should pick up the cost of recycling the devices they sell. Lawmakers have passed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws, which require producers to establish and fund systems to recycle or collect abandoned(抛弃)products.

Some companies are increasing their recycling efforts on their own. For example, Apple in 2018 introduced Daisy, a smartphone-recycling robot that can take apart 200 iPhones every hour But thats a drop in the bucket(桶)compared with the 50 million tons of e-waste generated globally last year.

32.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

    A.Increasing e-waste caused by 5G.

    B.Expenses paid for network services.

C.E-waste recycling capacity in the U.S.

    D.Promising benefits of new electronics.

    33. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3?

    A.Businesses charge consumers too much.

B.It's easy for a store to handle used devices.

C.Each state must make laws to ban e-waste.

    D.Recycling e-waste is a painful task.

34.What can we expect of Daisy introduced by Apple?

A.It will be applied to more recycling centres.

    B. It needs to be upgraded to work more efficiently.

C.It may reduce a large amount of e-waste.

D.It could bring great profit to big companies.

    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

A.A Sharp Increase in 5G Charges

    C. Apple, a  Globally Well-know Brand

    B.5G Technology's Bright Future

    D.E-waste. Challenging the World

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Failure is a word that no one wants to hear. It is human being's biggest fear yet it is faced by every human being. Sometimes, people's fear of it is their biggest barrier to success. 36 Here are some tips which can help you get on the positive side of life.

37 Before starting anything that you think will give you success, promise yourself that you will never give up. This promise helps make your mind ready for both failure and success. Remember that it is never too late to do so.

Learn from your mistakes. This is the opportunity that you should not let go of.  Suppose you are on a football ground, you strike the ball for 9 times in a row and fail. 38 The tenth attempt proves that you have somehow learnt from your mistakes.

Never think that you've got only one plan. The worst thing you can do after failing in some projects is thinking that it was the only plan you could ever think of. There is always another way. 39 If you are into achieving something, no one or nothing in this world can stop you.

Keep a positive attitude. This is the most important thing that you need to live a happy life. Always think positive. Never let yourself down. 40

    A.Never give up.

    B.Keep confident all the time.

C.But at the tenth attempt, you succeed.

D.If Plan A fails, turn to Plan B or Plan C.

    E. Therefore, you need to learn how to deal with failure.

    Grandpa's Bee

A long time before I was born, my grandma and grandpa moved into the house on Beechwood Avenue. They had a young family of 4 little girls. On weekend they dug a garden to grow some of their own food.

Everybody worked to keep the garden growing. All summer long, the family ate food from the garden and enjoyed the beautiful flowers. Grandma put up strawberry jam, tomatoes, beans, peppers, pears and peaches in canning jam. They were good to eat through the long winter.

Grandchildren grow up, and grandparents grow older. It became harder for Grandma and Grandpa to keep up the garden. So they made it a little smaller. There was still plenty to eat from the garden and lovely flowers to enjoy.

Then one summer when Grandpa was eighty-nine years old, all he could do was watch from his lawn chair as the vegetables grew and the roses bloomed. Summer slowly faded, and Grandpa died before it was time to bring in the harvest.

It was a lonely winter for Grandma. She sat near the window, looking out at the yard and wondering if she could plant the garden in the spring. It would be hard to care for it by herself. When spring came, she planted only a little garden.

One sunny day in the early summer Grandma heard a commotion(喧闹)in the front yard and looked out the window to see a frightening sight-a large group of bees filled the air between two tall trees. There was thousands of bees in the air, so many that the group reached the tree-topsThe buzzing sound was disturbing(令人烦恼的).Grandma watched as the bees made their way into a hole up in one of the trees. Before long, every one of those bees had disappeared into its new home.
