My husband and I always wanted to go to the Caribbean but didn’t know much about the islands or how we were going to afford it. By chance, a friend of ours in Australia mentioned “pet sitting” and that it is something you can do all over the world.
We quickly created an account on a pet sitting website and began searching for options. There were only a couple of sits available in that part of the world, but we tried our luck, sent a request, and to our surprise landed a three-month job in Grenada, so our year was going to be taken up with Caribbean pet sits.
Inspired by a Canadian couple, we decided to start our own travel blog. We began by writing about The Virgin Islands, highlighting the beautiful beaches. However, for every photo album of a beautiful beach, there were 10 photos of trash (垃圾). It was hard to ignore the plastic pollution issue, especially on such primitive and remote beaches. So, we began to share photos of the trash we saw and how much we could pick up on our daily dog walks.
The more we looked into plastic pollution, the more we realized the severity of the global plastic pollution. From that point, we used our platform to create awareness and highlight ways to say no to plastic and travel plastic-free. We changed our daily routines, our way of living, and even our diets to accommodate more organic foods and little to no plastic packaging.
It’s been over three years now and we continue to do what we can. This journey has led us to some amazing places, working with great brands and even organizing a country-wide beach clean-up campaign in Grenada.
Our aim now is to keep on going. We love connecting with like-minded people. It’s been amazing few years that was sparked by a conversation about pet sitting. Who would have guessed?
4.Why did the author do pet sitting?
A.To raise fund. B.To protect the environment.
C.To cover travel expenses. D.To shoot beautiful beaches.
5.What does the author intend to convey through her story?
A.Pet sitting is a new type of occupation.
B.The Caribbean is an ideal travel destination.
C.Travel blog is a superb way to gain popularity.
D.Action should be taken to fight plastic pollution.
6.How did the author find her experience in the Caribbean?
    A.Significant. B.Challenging.
    C.Adventurous. D.Dreadful.
7.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
    A.Changing Lifestyles by Pet Sitting
B.Unexpected Gains from Pet Sitting Travel
    C.Dealing with Global Environment Pollution
D.The Availability of Pet Sitting in the Caribbean
    【答案】4.C    5.D    6.A    7.B
根据第一段“My husband and I always wanted to go to the Caribbean but didn’t know much about the islands or how we were going to afford it. By chance, a friend of ours in Australia mentioned “pet sitting” and that it is something you can do all over the world.(我和我丈夫一直想去加勒比,但对这些岛屿不太了解,也不知道我们将如何负担得起。一次偶然的机会,我们在澳大利亚的一位朋友提到了“照顾宠物”,这是一个你在全世界都可以做的事)”可知,作者做“照顾宠物”的工作是为了支付自己和丈夫去加勒比的费用。故选C。
5.推理判断题。根据第三段的“However, for every photo album of a beautiful beach, there were 10 photos of trash (垃圾). It was hard to ignore the plastic pollution issue, especially on such primitive and remote beaches. So, we began to share photos of the trash we saw and how much we could pick up on our daily dog walks.(然而,每一张美丽海滩的相册里,都有10张垃圾照片(垃圾). 很难忽视塑料污染问题,尤其是在这样原始和偏远的海滩上。于是,我们开始分享我们看到的垃圾照片,以及我们每天遛狗时能捡到多少垃圾)”和第四段的“The more we looked into plastic pollution, the more we realized the severity of the global plastic pollution.(我们越是关注塑料污染,就越是意识到全球塑料污染的严重性)”推知,作者想通过自己的故事告诉读者必须采取措施应对垃圾污染。故选D。
6.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“It’s been over three years now and we continue to do what we can. It’s been amazing few years that was sparked by a conversation about pet sitting. Who would have guessed?(我们现在的目标是继续前进。我们喜欢与志同道合的人建立联系。一场关于宠物看护的对话引发了这几年的奇妙经历。谁会猜的到呢?)”可知 ,B项“照顾宠物旅行的意外收获”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B。

The rhino census (犀牛普查) is out, bearing good news for the greater one-horned rhinos! In September, 2022, the International Rhino Foundation (IRF) documented in a report that there is a baby boom in this population, representing an increase of 167 percent.
According to the report, there are a total of 4,014 greater one-horned rhinos living in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Although this is positive news, their IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) status still remains vulnerable.
In India alone, the home to 70 percent of the world’s greater one-horned rhinos, there was an increase of 274 rhinos since the last biannual census, according to the organization Rhino Review.
An important reason for this baby boom is the fact that Assam, India, has enlarged Kaziringo National Park, home to the world’s largest one-horned rhino population. The park went from 430 square kilometers to 1,040 square kilometers. This gives more breeding areas for the rhinos, and they are closed to visitors during breeding season.
India and Nepal are also protecting the rhinos by enforcing wildlife crime laws. To reduce rhino death by poaching (偷猎), the IRF donates vehicles and equipment, plus education including guard training and crime investigation.
The IRF data for other rhino species is not as promising, although the greater one-horned rhino numbers are encouraging for future conservation. According to the report, there is a decline in Sumatran rhinos, Africa’s white rhinos, while the Javan rhino population is stable and threatened by loss of habitat.
The State of the Rhino report offers hope for these other species. Given that the greater one-horned things were once close to extinction, with fewer than 100 living in the world, their recovery is incredible. This demonstrates that there are solutions when organizations and people work together. Let us hope that this successful rhino baby boom will affect other endangered wildlife species around the globe.
8.What contributes to the baby boon of one-horned rhinos in Assam, India?
A.Extending the protected areas for rhinos.
B.Raising fund to set up more reserves for rhinos.
C.Leaving the one-horned rhinos alone in the wild.
D.Keeping visitors away from the Kaziringo National Park.
9.How does IRF help protect the one-horned rhinos?
    A.By cooperating with other organizations.
    B.By enhancing anti-poaching efforts.
C.By transferring the rhinos to other habitats.
D.By guarding the rhinos with new equipment.
10.What can we learn from the rhino report?
A.Rhinos are no longer a vulnerable species.
B.Rhinos will affect other wildlife in the world.
C.Everyone can play a role in protecting nature.
D.It is possible to protect other endangered species.
11.What is the purpose of this text?
A.To inform good news on the greater one-horned rhinos.
B.To show the measures taken to protect the one-horned rhinos.
C.To introduce an endangered species—the greater one-horned rhinos.
D.To indicate the decline of other species of rhino population.
    【答案】8.A    9.B    10.D    11.A
第四段的“An important reason for this baby boom is the fact that Assam, India, has enlarged Kaziringo National Park, home to the world’s largest one-horned rhino population.  (这种新出生小犀牛数目增长的一个重要原因是印度阿萨姆邦扩大了卡齐林戈国家公园)”可知,犀牛保护区的扩大促成了独角犀牛数目的增长。故选A。
第五段的“To reduce rhino death by poaching (偷猎), the IRF donates vehicles and equipment, plus education including guard training and crime investigation. (为了减少偷猎造成的犀牛死亡,IRF捐赠了车辆和设备,以及包括警卫培训和犯罪调查在内的教育。)”可知,IRF在加强对抗偷猎方面做出努力来帮助保护独角犀牛。故选B。
10.推理判断题。根据最后一段首句“The State of the Rhino report offers hope for these other species. (犀牛情况的报告为类似的其他物种带来了希望)”可知,犀牛状况报告为类似其他物种带来了希望。由此推断,保护全球其他濒危野生物种是可能的。故选D。
11.推理判断题。文章首句“The rhino census (犀牛普查) is out, bearing good news for the greater one-horned rhinos! (犀牛普查已经出炉,这对大独角犀牛来说是个好消息!)”点明了文章中心。犀牛普查已经结束,为大独角犀牛带来了好消息!由此推断,作者写这篇文章是为了让人们了解关于独角犀牛的这个好消息。故选A。
    D
While the benefits of Zoom and other videoconferencing tools made them absolutely essential in the pandemic (疫情), the research suggests that heavy reliance on the technology comes at a cost to creative thinking.
Brucks at Columbia University and her team started their investigation when managers reported having trouble innovating with remote workers. Brucks doubted whether videoconferencing was a factor, suspecting that difficulties coordinating (协调) large, global teams online might be to blame instead.
To find out, the researchers analysed ideas for new products generated by 1,490 engineers for a multinational company. The engineers, who were in Finland, Hungary, India, Israel and Portugal, were randomly paired up and given an hour or so to brainstorm products either in person or over videoconferencing. They then selected their best idea.
Writing in Nature, the researchers report that the engineers produced more ideas, and more innovative ideas, when working face to face. “They are not only generating a larger number of creative ideas, but their best idea is better,” Brucks said. Virtual teams were just as good at selecting the best ideas from a bunch as those that met in person.
“Visual focus is a huge component of cognitive (认知) focus. When you’re focused on the screen and ignoring the rest of the environment, that affects how you approach the task,” said Brucks. “It’s uniquely bad for creativity because it’s inhibiting broader exploration.”
Brucks said the impact on the real world “could be huge”, leading to a division of labour between face-to-face and virtual meetings that could “permanently reshape the office and work schedules”. But she urged businesses to be cautious, because if virtual meetings are cheaper than in-person ones, they may still be more cost-effective.
Asked for tips, Brucks said people could save more creative tasks for in-person meetings, or turn off their camera when coming up with ideas. “I think it unlocks more creative thinking,” she said.
12.Why did Brucks conduct the research?
A.To prove her assumption. B.To clarify a new concept.
    C.To make a comparison. D.To explain a rule.
13.What is the finding of the research?
A.Face-to-face gatherings promote cross-culture ties. B.Workers think less creatively in virtual meetings.
C.Individual work generates more innovative ideas. D.Videoconferencing has an irreplaceable role.
14.What does the underlined word “inhibiting” in paragraph 5 mean?
    A.Encouraging. B.Requiring. C.Beginning. D.Preventing.
15.What does Brucks say about virtual meetings?
A.They should be used accordingly. B.They’ll make office workers divided.
C.They’ll give way to in-person meetings. D.They help businesses run more efficiently.
    【答案】12.A    13.B    14.D    15.A
根据第二段“Brucks doubted whether videoconferencing was a factor, suspecting that difficulties coordinating (协调) large, global teams online might be to blame instead.”(Brucks怀疑视频会议是否是一个因素,他怀疑在线协调大型全球团队的困难反而应负主要责任。)和第三段的“To find out, the researchers analysed ideas for new products generated by 1,490 engineers for a multinational company. ”(为了找到答案,研究人员分析了一家跨国公司1490名工程师提出的新产品创意。)可知,Brucks进行研究是为了证明自己的怀疑和假设。故选A。
根据第四段“Writing in Nature, the researchers report that the engineers produced more ideas, and more innovative ideas, when working face to face. ”(研究人员在《自然》杂志上撰文称,当工程师面对面工作时,他们会产生更多的想法,更有创新性的想法。)可知,工程师面对面工作时比虚拟会议中有更多的创新思维。故选B。
14.词句猜测题。根据第五段“When you’re focused on the screen and ignoring the rest of the environment, that affects how you approach the task,”(当你专注于屏幕而忽略环境的其他部分时,这会影响你完成任务的方式,)可知,人们在虚拟会议中,注意力都集中在屏幕上,就会对创新思维产生影响,阻止人们进行更广泛的探索和思考;结合划线词所在句“It’s uniquely bad for creativity because it’s inhibiting broader exploration.”(这对创造力特别不利,因为它抑制了更广泛的探索。)
根据第六段“Brucks said the impact on the real world “could be huge”, leading to a division of labour between face-to-face and virtual meetings that could “permanently reshape the office and work schedules”.”(Brucks表示,这对现实世界的影响“可能是巨大的”,导致面对面会议和虚拟会议之间的分工,可能“永久性地重塑办公室和工作时间表”。)和“But she urged businesses to be cautious, because if virtual meetings are cheaper than in-person ones, they may still be more cost-effective.”(但她敦促企业保持谨慎,因为如果虚拟会议比面对面会议便宜,它们可能仍然更具成本效益。) 故选A。

F.No matter how worried you are, you are supposed to listen with validation
G.Perseverance is the ability to stick with a task or goal even in the face of difficulty
16.根据前文“Motivating an adult child can be challenging, as they are independent individuals with their wants and needs. (激励一个成年孩子是很有挑战性的,因为他们是独立的个体,有自己的愿望和需求。)”同时根据后文提出的激励孩子们的具体方法,可知虽然激励一个成年孩子是很有挑战性的,可是依旧可以做一些事情来激励他们。E选项“However, there are some things you can do to facilitate motivating them(然而,你可以做一些事情来激励他们。)”
17.根据标题“Validate(认可)when you communicate(沟通时要认可他们)”以及后文“In this way, the children are willing to show desire to move on and work actively.(这样,孩子们就愿意表现出继续前进和积极工作的愿望。)” F选项“No matter how worried you are, you are supposed to listen with validation(不管你有多担心,你都应该带着肯定的态度去倾听)”中的listen with validation与标题呼应。
根据下文“Take a look in your accountability mirror to see when you are not offering acknowledgment or encouragement for your adult children’s efforts and accomplishments, no matter how small. (看看你的问责镜,看看你什么时候没有对成年子女的努力和成就表示认可或鼓励,无论这些努力和成就有多小。)”可知,此处强调要对自己进行反思,认清自己什么时候没有对成年子女的努力和成就表示认可和鼓励。B选项“Recognize when you are not supportive(当你不支持别人时,要意识到这一点)”概括本段段旨,即意识到没有对成年子女的努力和成就表示认可或鼓励。故选B。
19.根据后文“It can be developed and strengthened through practice, effort and self-reflection. (它可以通过练习、努力和自我反省来培养和加强)”可知,毅力是可以练习、努力和自我反省来培养和加强的。由此推知,空处应该指出毅力是什么。G选项“Perseverance is the ability to stick with a task or goal even in the face of difficulty.(毅力是即使在困难面前也能坚持任务或目标的能力)”符合语境,perseverance是关键词。故选G。
20.根据前文“Ultimately, the most important thing is to maintain a positive and supportive relationship with your children, (最后,最重要的是与你的孩子保持积极和支持的关系,)”可知,鼓励孩子独立的同时,最重要的是还要与孩子保持积极和支持的关系。 D选项“being there for them when they need your help(当他们需要你的帮助时,在他们身边)”符合题意。故选D。

Just like on every break, Asiri would go with his uncle to his workshop, who made costumes for elephants! Asiri had been asking to help make the costumes. But he’d been told he was too little to sew the fine stitches (缝线) needed for the costumes.
Waiting for Uncle Thad, Asiri smoothed his practice piece beside him. Across it he had sewn, pulled out, and resewn stitches just as Uncle Thad had taught him. He couldn’t wait to show it to his uncle.
When his uncle finally came over, Asiri leapt from his seat. “Look, Uncle, ” said Asiri, holding up the stitched cloth. “These are fine stitches, Asiri, ” said Uncle Thad. “Just right to fix sequins (亮片). ” Together they walked to the workshop.
Uncle Thad and his team were busy making the costumes. They had to be ready for Esala Perahera, the biggest festival held in the city of Kandy. Since the elephants were the stars of the parade, their costumes had to be dazzling. He especially loved the sequins sewn on them that made them sparkle.
Uncle Thad, his team, and now Asiri, would finish the costumes. Asiri hoped he’d get to sew a sequin onto the costume for the most important elephant in the parade. After lunch, Asiri was putting away a piece of cloth when his uncle called. “Asiri? Please bring me the box of golden sequins. ”
Here was his chance, thought Asiri. He’d bring the box to Uncle Thad and then ask to sew one on. Uncle Thad was sure to say yes. Asiri lifted the box from the shelf but turned a little too quickly, and the box was turned over, leaving the golden sequins on the floor. Uncle Thad turned to stare-first at Asiri and then at the golden sequins. Asiri felt his cheeks turning red. Now, Uncle Thad would never let him sew a single sequin on the costumes this year. Asiri dashed out of the door, down the street, and all the way back home. Hearing the rush of his footsteps, Asiri’s mother came to the door.
    注意:
    1.续写的词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“What’s wrong, Asiri?” asked his mother.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Reaching the workshop, Asiri found the sequins were still there.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “What’s wrong, Asiri?” asked his mother. “I spilled the sequins!” he blurted, almost in tears. “Did you clean them up?” she asked. “No. ” Asiri answered. “Go back and clean them up,” she said with a wave of her hand. “Uncle Thad will expect you to.” Asiri shook his head. But he knew it was only right to clean up a mess he’d made. It was one of Uncle Thad’s workshop rules. Hearing mother’s words, Asiri knew what he should do. He walked towards the workshop with heart in his mouth.
Reaching the workshop, Asiri found the sequins were still there. They lay scat-tered across the floor, waiting for him. Asiri gathered the sequins into a pile and swept them into a dust pan. Carefully, he shook it, separating the dust from the se-quins. Only when the last sequin slipped into the box did Asiri glance up. Uncle Thad stood in the doorway with his arms crossed. Crossing the room, he squeezed Asiri’s shoulder. “Good workers always clean up after themselves.” He clapped his hands. “Now, come. There are costumes to finish and sequins to sew.”
