Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people.
According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.
There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster.
When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.
This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life.

    A.Refresh oneself. B.Live a better life.
C.Improve urban environments. D.Deal with stressful issues.
4.What can be inferred according to paragraph 4?
A.It is not easy to get in nature.
    B.Nature treatment is still unpopular.
    C.Most patients prefer nature treatment.
D.Doctors usually recommend nature to patients.

Our planet quakes thousands of times a year, but we still can’t predict exactly when and where earthquakes will strike. What if animals’ odd behavior could warn us?
Researchers have reviewed hundreds of reports on pre-quake abnormal animal behaviors, but more were just anecdotes. Geologist Jim Berkland counted newspaper ads looking for runaway cats and dogs. On October 13, 1989, he told a newspaper reporter a big quake would strike in a week. Four days later, the Loma Prieta mega-quake hit! But the scientific community still rejected Berkland’s theory. He didn’t document every prediction, so nobody could measure his accuracy rate.
Actual scientific evidence has to be repeatable. And a connection between a cause and an effect has to be shown to be stronger than random chance through careful experimentation and data collection. California researchers in the 1970s happened to have built controlled habitats to monitor the wheel-running activity of pocket mice. These habitats happened to be in an active earthquake area. Then the 1971 San Fernando earthquake struck nearby. The researchers checked their data and found no big changes in how long the animals ran in their wheels or stayed underground before the earthquake activity. What might the next experiment show?
Researchers from 150 universities worldwide are working on a new study called the ICARUS project. The project tracks many small animal species such as birds, bats, and turtles for the purpose of scientific research. One group of researchers is looking for possible connections between animal behavior and earthquakes. If they find a reliable connection, this could save hundreds of thousands of human lives. ICARUS aims to power an app that will give people hours to get to safety.
However, not everyone is hopeful. Geologist Wendy Bohon said that ICARUS is doing some “cool things,” but she knows animal behavior is hard to pin down. “My cat could act crazy before an earthquake,” she says. “But it also acts crazy if somebody uses the can opener.”
8.What does the underlined word “anecdotes” mean in paragraph 2?
    A.Real-life news stories.
    B.Random individual studies.

9.Why was Berkland’s theory rejected by the scientific community?
A.He used unreliable data from newspaper ads.
B.His document wasn’t consistent with his theory.
C.His study didn’t include enough animal samples.
D.He failed to prove the accuracy of his predictions.
10.What is the ultimate goal of the ICARUS project?
    A.To provide accurate pre-quake warnings.
B.To develop an app to call for help during quakes.
C.To seek worldwide cooperations in quake prediction.
D.To find connections between animal behaviors and quakes.
11.What is Wendy Bohon’s attitude towards the ICARUS project?
    A.Disapproving.
    B.Doubtful.
    C.Intolerant.

Pieter Bruegel’s iconic 1565 painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The work showed people harvesting wheat nearly as tall as they were.“nowadays, however, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see that wheat is about knee-height. The reduced height is essentially a consequence of breeding (培育)along with genes for increasing production to feed a growing population,” biologist De Smet explained.
De Smet says wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can allow us to track the transformation of food crops over time. He teamed up with art historian Vergauwen, a friend since childhood, to document such artwork around the world. They have been mainly looking at things where they can spot changes in shape, color and size.
Their interest in plants in artwork began with a visit to the Hermitage Museum, where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early-17th-century painting. It appeared to be pale and white on the inside. Biologist De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But art historian Vergauwen had a different idea. “No, this is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he painted it like that, that’s the way it must have looked like,” he explained.
Other paintings revealed that both red and white watermelons were grown during the 17th century.“With all the genetic knowledge we now have, we can look in more detail how something comes about,”De Smet said. “For example, until the 18th century, European strawberries appeared tiny in paintings-they then grew in size as they were crossbred with North American varieties.”
Ultimately, the team hopes to create an online research database of historical plant artwork. They seek the contributions of art enthusiasts around the world via the social media. “However,” Vergauwen reminds, “if you’re going to use, for example, Picasso to try and understand how a pear looked in the early 20th century, you might be misled.”

Human activity emits far less methane(甲烷) than carbon dioxide, but methane has a bigger impact on the earth. Over the course of 20 years, a ton of the gas will warm the atmosphere about 86 times more than a ton of CO₂. As a result, methane has been responsible for 23% of the rise in temperatures since pre-industrial times. Carbon dioxide gets most of the attention, but unless methane emissions are limited, there is little hope of stabilizing the climate.
Unfortunately, methane emissions have been anything but stable. After briefly pausing in the early 2000s, atmospheric concentrations of the gas started rising again in 2007. A global inventory (清单) concluded last year, found that humans were largely to blame. Chief among the reasons for the rise are the gassy output of livestock farming, rice cultivation and the fossil-fuel industry. Agriculture and energy each make up roughly one-third of annual methane emissions.
By how much do methane emissions need to fall? Carbon dioxide lingers in the atmosphere for centuries, making it hard to reduce its atmospheric concentrations. By contrast, methane has a half-life of roughly ten years, which means that it degrades quickly. If new emissions can be cut to below the rate at which old emissions reduce, the concentration of methane lingering in the atmosphere will soon fall, slowing global warming. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that, to keep temperatures between 1.5°C and 2°C above pre-industrial levels, human methane emissions must drop to 35% below where they stood in 2010 by mid-century.
Politicians and the public tend to worry about carbon-dioxide emissions but neglect the effects of cutting methane. But dealing with the gas would have a large effect rapidly and at relatively low cost. Governments are supposed to firm up their commitments to cut emissions under the Paris agreement. It should go further and include a specific target for methane.
23.What does the text mainly argue for?
A.Methane emissions should be taken seriously.
B.Atmospheric concentrations of methane will soon fall.
C.Methane is mainly responsible for the rise in temperature.
D.Human activities were largely to blamed for the global warming.
24.Which statement is TRUE according to the text?
A.We’ve produced 86 times more carbon dioxide than methane.
B.Carbon dioxide takes up 23% of the responsibility for global warming.
C.Methane emissions have been rising dramatically since the early 2000s.
D.Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for a long time while methane degrades quickly.
25.What is the main reason for the rise of methane emissions?
    A.The rising temperature.
    B.Agriculture and energy.
    C.Rapidly developing industry.
D.Atmospheric concentrations of methane dropping slowly.
26.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Dealing with methane emissions will cost a lot.
B.Carbon dioxide emissions is no longer a serious problem.
C.Cutting methane emission is against the Paris agreement.
D.Governments should do more to reduce methane emissions.

We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miler. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently had needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.
27.Why does the author mention an actor’s struggle before a career breakthrough at the very beginning?
A.To introduce a dog’s similar but even more striking experiences.
B.To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle.
C.To clearly point out the main idea of the passage.
D.To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.

B.the dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her inner quality
C.the dog looked exactly the same as before
D.the dog’s really excited to see the dog she helped live such a happy life

    B.The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home”.
C.The Trainer and Her Star Dog.
    D.Shelby’s Hard-luck Story.

When 16-year-old Grayden Brunet joined the Sackets Harbor, New York, volunteer fire department in 2017, he was the youngest on the team by 20 years. He was so determined to be following in his dad’s footsteps that he persuaded two classmates, Niklas and Dalton, to sign up too.
A few years later, the older firefighters quit their jobs over COVID-19 concerns. Suddenly, the three teens were not only helping the Sackets Harbor volunteer fire department, they were the Sackets Harbor volunteer fire department. They were the ones responding to the emergency calls of heart attacks, car accidents, and suicides. And they were the ones who were responsible to send COVID-19 patients to hospitals. “We went from not even having our licenses to saving people’s lives,” Dalton told the reporter. As far as the teens were concerned, they couldn’t quit their jobs. If they did, Brunet told North County Public Radio,“The community would lose the emergency operators and the drivers of the ambulance.”
The three of them struggled on alone for a year until help arrived in the form of five more teens, all motivated to serve their neighbors in the town of 1,300 residents.“When they call 911, they’re expecting someone to help them,” says Sophia, who was 16 when she joined.
The job is taxing. One night last fall, the crew responded to two emergency calls and a fire. They got home at 5:30 a.m, just two hours before school started. “It’s definitely hard coming back from the calls and having to take an algebra test, Grayden’s younger brother Gannon said. But these brave teens didn’t mind the hard work. As a matter of fact, when callers met their rescuers, a lot of them would ask,“Wait, how old are you?” That was what they felt the most priceless moment.

If we want to know where our capability for complex language came from, we need to look at how our brains are different from other animals. This relates to more than just brain size. It is important to know what other things our brains can do and when and why they evolved that way. One thing we can see in the remains of early humans,is the development of the mouth, throat and tongue, which allowed language to evolve.
At some point, our brains became able to make our mouths produce vowel and consonant sounds, and we developed the capacity to invent words to name things around us. These were the basic ingredients for complex language. The next change would have been to put those words into sentences. However, no one knows if the next step — adding grammar to signal past, present and future, for example, or plurals and relative clauses — required a further development in the human brain or was simply a response to our increasingly civilized way of living together.
Between 100,000 and 50,000 years ago, we start to see the evidence of early human civilization through cave paintings, though no one knows the connection between this and language. However, human brains did get bigger at this period. Moreover, humans did become more complex and more intelligent. Was it using language that caused their brains to develop, so that human could produce cave paintings? Or did their more complex brains start producing language? It was not clear yet.
More questions lie in looking at the influence of genetics on brain and language development. Are there genes that mutated (突变) and gave us language ability? Researchers have found a gene mutation that occurred between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago, which seems to have a connection with speaking and how our brains control our mouths and faces. Monkeys have a similar gene, but it did not undergo this mutation. It’s too early to say how much influence genes have on language, but one day the answers might be found in our DNA.
38.Which factor contributes to the development of language ?

D.To clear a misunderstanding about language development.
41.What is the writer’s attitude to the findings of genes?
    A.Unclear. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.

“You are what you eat” is one of the most common cliches in dieting and health, entering wide use with the publication of Victor Lindlahr’ s book in 1942. The phrase narrowly assumes that our health is only determined by dieting, something that advocates of popular diets also want us to believe. The reality, however, is that our health and longevity are determined by much more than just diet. Exercising, avoiding risky behaviors, and staying productive can offset a less-than-perfect diet.
“What it suggests is that our health is rigidly determined by the specific foods and nutrients we put in our bodies. It says that if two people put the same foods in their bodies, they will have the same level of health,” sports nutritionist Matt Fitzgerald wrote in his 2014 book Diet Cults, in which he criticized many popular diet trends for being unscientific and ultimately ineffective.
Science has revealed a more detailed truth, Fitzgerald says.“We are what our bodies do with what we eat,” he clarified. The two great pillars of a healthy body are diet and exercise, and both affect physical functioning. “You are what you eat” ignores the fact that what we do with our bodies may be just as important as what we put in them. Fitzgerald cautions that one cannot simply eat whatever one wants. Candy for every meal will not provide the nutrients that the body needs. But one also doesn’t have to eat a perfect diet all the time to maximize health and longevity.
As the century-long Longevity Project, a study which followed long-lived individuals, has shown, there are numerous aspects of a person’s life equally or more important than diet that determine health and lifespan. Simply being ambitious, productive, and engaged while avoiding destructive behaviors like smoking, drinking to excess, abusing drugs, or driving too fast prolongs life and keeps us in good shape.
So yes, we are much, much more than what we eat.
45.What does the phrase“You are what you eat” advocate?
    A.The nutrition. B.The exercises.
C.The intended diets. D.The risky behaviors.
46.Why did Fitzgerald disagree over the popular diet trends?
A.They didn’t help us to improve health.
B.They failed to provide enough nutrients.
C.They didn’t consider the physical functioning.
D.They failed to include other important factors.
47.What is NOT included in prolonging one’s life span?
    A.Being active. B.Avoiding smoking.
C.Being in good shape. D.Drinking at a certain amount.
48.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.What the cliche tells us B.You are more than what you eat
C.Health and longevity: hands in hands D.Ambition and engagement: key to long life

According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.

When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.

根据第四段“Simply being ambitious, productive, and engaged while avoiding destructive behaviors like smoking, drinking to excess, abusing drugs, or driving too fast prolongs life and keeps us in good shape.(只要保持雄心勃勃、富有成效、积极投入,同时避免吸烟、酗酒、滥用药物或超速驾驶等破坏性行为,就能延长寿命,保持良好的身材。)”可知,延长一个人的寿命保持活跃、忌烟限酒,而“保持良好的身材”为结果。故选C。
48.主旨大意题。根据第一段““You are what you eat“ is one of the most common cliches in dieting and health, entering wide use with the publication of Victor Lindlahr’ s book in 1942. The phrase narrowly assumes that our health is only determined by dieting, something that advocates of popular diets also want us to believe.(“你吃的食物决定你的健康”是节食和健康方面最常见的陈词滥调之一,随着维克多·林德拉尔1942年的书的出版而广泛使用。这句话狭隘地假设我们的健康只由饮食决定,这也是流行饮食的倡导者想让我们相信的。)”及全文可知,文章主要说明“You are what you eat(你吃的食物决定你的健康)”该句流行话语的片面性,该句话没有包涵其他因素。所以“You are more than what you eat(你的健康不仅仅是由饮食决定的)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选B。
