Félix AndarinCarvajal was a born runner. As a boy, he spent his childhood running up and down nearby hills. Years later, as a postman, Carvajal became well-known in the city of Havana, and eventually, he began to put his fame to use seeking out donations so he might represent Cuba as a marathon runner at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri. At the time, there was no state support for Olympic athletes in Cuba.

But even with the money, Carvajal nearly didnˈt make it there. His journey to the Games took him first to New Orleanswhere he lost all the money he had saved up for the trip. In a foreign city, Carvajal began to walk north up along the Mississippi River to St. Louis. It was hundreds of miles, but between walking and hitching(搭便车) rides, he was able to reach St. Louis in time for his event.

It was August in St. Louis and Carvajal stood in the staging areahungry and out of shape and tired. Carvajal took off to a commanding early lead despite the fact that he had not eaten for two days. Carvajal had never particularly believed in pacing himself. Carvajal was mostly self-trained and his ideas about running had always been straightforward: to run far and run fast and run until you canˈt go anymore. But 26.2 miles is a long distance. Carvajal was reported to have picked and eaten five green apples while running and became badly ill with a stomachache. Miraculously, Carvajal managed to return to the race and finish in fourth place.

The 1904 Olympics was the peak of Carvajalˈs international career. But he remained a runner for the rest of his life. At 55 years old, Carvajal ran the entire length of Cuba along the countryˈs main highway, a distance of nearly 700 miles. Toward the end of his life, he performed a short running demonstration."This is to show you that I still run," he told the crowd.

24What did Carvajal use his fame to do?

    A. Get a job as a postman.

    B. Inspire more people to run.

    C. Support professional athletes in Cuba.

    A. A man always in need.     B. A man born for medals.

    C. A man always on the move. D. A man devoted to charity.

    C

Nowadays, more stores and restaurants are not accepting cash as payment. Instead, customers must pay with a credit card(信用卡), or by smartphone app.

Many business owners say that being cashless has helped them streamline the way their business runs. Staff members donˈt have to worry about having enough money in the cash register to make change or about taking bills and coins to the bank.

Howeveraccording to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, more than 8 million households in the United States donˈt have bank accounts. Also, many people, including kids, donˈt meet the requirements for a credit card.

A cashless economy(经济)is not an inclusive economy. There are consumers (消费者)who canˈt get a credit card, because of low income. When stores refuse to accept cash, they exclude(排斥)low-income or homeless people,” says Tazra Mitchell, a policy director at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute.

Plus, people who do have credit cards might prefer to pay in cash.“Cash is used by almost eight in 10 people in the US every month. Thatˈs more than any other payment type,” says Nick Bourke, a director at the Pew Charitable Trustsˈ consumer finance project.

Lawmakers in several places have taken steps to ban(禁止)cashless stores. A handful of major cities , including New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , have already passed laws to address the problem. In San Francisco, California, a law banning cashless stores was passed last May. It says most stores in the city must allow customers to pay with cash. Derek Remski helped write the San Francisco law. Remski says, "Itˈs about understanding that not everyone has equal access to things."

28What does the underlined word “streamline" in paragraph 2 probably

    mean?

    A. Record. B. Understand. C. Redevelop.  D. Simplify.

29What does Tazra Mitchell think of a cashless economy?

    A. It is unfair to some people.         B. It is enjoyed by bank workers.

    C. It is advantageous to customers. D. It is the result of the marketplace.

30What can we learn from paragraph 5?

    A. Stores should allow more than one payment type.

    B. Cashless stores will be driven out of the market.

    C. Cash payment is still very popular with consumers.

    D. Paying with credit cards has its own disadvantages.

31What was some citiesˈ attitude towards going cashless?

    A. They encouraged it.       B. They fought against it.

    C. They cared little about it.   D. They were hopeful about it.

    D

400 million tons of plastic are generated annually, most of which comes from single-use plastic. While countries are making progress in reducing this waste through paper bags and strawsthere are still applications where the properties of plastic are necessary.

Transparent(透明的)wood is an alternative for such applications and is highly preferred since it prevents the harm of petroleum-derived(石油衍生的)plastic products. German scientist Siegfried Fink first created transparent wood in the year 1992and over the past three decades it has been significantly improved by other researchers as well.

In its natural form, wood is not transparent. Howeverresearchers have found that removing lignin, a naturally occurring biopolymer that provides structural support for the plant tissuecan make it transparent. To do so, the wood is soaked in a warm solution consisting of multiple chemicals, followed by boiling it in another solution. This removes the lignin completely and turns the wood white. Howeverthe space that was occupied by lignin needs to be filled up to maintain structural integrity. This process is done by using a resin(树脂) at a temperature of 185 Fahrenheit85℃).

The final product can have as much as 90 transparency, and it doesnˈt break easily. More importantly, it is more biodegradable than glass or plastic.

While transparent wood isnˈt commercial yet, it has been employed in a wide variety of applications ranging from construction to energy storage, making flexible electronics and packaging.

The researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) conducted a life-cycle analysisLCAof transparent wood to determine the environmental impact of its production and end-of-lifeEOLcycle. The study found that using hydrogen peroxide for delignification, followed by using epoxy for infiltrationwas the most eco-friendly. When scaled up for industrial productionthe former method would lower electricity consumption by as much as 98.8 percent.

EOL analysis showed that transparent wood had a reduced ecological impact compared to polyethylene(聚乙烯),paving the way for it to be commercially adapted to replace the petroleum-based material.

32Why is transparent wood preferred compared to plastic

    A. It is environmentally friendly. B. It can be used repeatedly.

    C. It can be used longer.      D. It is easier to make.

33What is paragraph 3 mainly about

    A. The natural form of wood.   B. The importance of chemicals

    C. How lignin keeps wood strong. D. How transparent wood is made.

34What did the researchers at IIT find about transparent wood

    A. Potential damage caused by it to the environment.

    B. The most eco-friendly way to produce it.

    C. It will replace plastic soon.

    D. It can be recycled.

35What can be expected of transparent woodˈs marketing

    A. Promising. B. Difficult. C. rewarding. D. Uncertain.
