Borough Market
Next to London Bridge, this food market has existed in some form since at least 1014. It is packed every Saturday from 9a. m. to 5p. m. with arty students and East End creative types filling their tote bags with organic groceries, vintage clothes, fresh flowers, coffee, books and unusual handmade gifts.
Portobello Road Market
Portobello Road Market is really five markets in one, with different sections dedicated to second-hand goods, clothing and fashion, household essentials. You'll find the greatest range of antiques stalls on Saturdays.
Brick Lane Market
The streets of East London's Brick Lane are lined with stalls selling anything and everything on Sundays. On a fine September day last year, Simon Hunt took his boat from Team Keane Rowing Club down to the River Thames, just as he normally does most days. But on that day, he spotted something in the shallows.
“At first, I thought maybe it's an animal bone and it would be funny to say to everyone on the water 'look, I found a bone'. But it was obviously from looking at it, you see the hip, the hip joint. And I thought, no, this is human bone. So, therefore, best to phone the police. " Simon Hunt said.
To determine if the river was a crime scene-having found a human bone there-they took it for carbon dating.
“And I got a phone call from the detective about a week ago. And she said: 'We've got the date, what do you think?' And, so, it shows my education now-my frame of reference for things that are old-medieval (中世纪的) maybe? Then she goes 'keep going'. Then she tells me that it's like 3, 500. I was thinking that then 3, 000 years old? And of course, she adds BC. " Simon Hunt recalled.
The bone is 5, 300 years old-one of the most ancient objects ever found in the Thames. What was going on? What was this place like? Who was this person? Well, like today, there's almost a causeway (堤道) across this part of the Thames at low tide. But 5, 000 years ago, the river was much wider and shallower. Mudflats (泥滩) extending beyond into woodland. The landscape was populated by Neolithic (新石器时代) man. From the beginning "oh, it's quite funny I found a bone in the river" to "actually then there it could be potentially criminal", to then finding out it's actually archaeologically (考古学的) significant. So, it has been an amazing adventure. I have no place for it in my house. I'm going to give it to the Museum of London so that they can put it on display and hopefully people will connect with the past.

"We're stopping here? At this shabby old building?" Then I was told that the Sanhe Tile Kiln (三和瓦窑) was a national treasure. Seriously? My heart sank as we walked toward what appeared to be a mass of dirt. The place looked like no national treasure I'd ever seen. My disappointment soon melted into expectation as we walked into the Sanhe Tile Kiln. I soon realized that this wasn't just any old building. This place, hidden in the heart of Kaohsiung, revolutionized the production of bricks in Taiwan. The piles I had mistaken for dirt were actually clay: a key ingredient in bricks.
Long ago, many buildings around Taiwan were made from bricks sourced from Fujian Province. But this all changed when hundreds of brick of kilns popped up all over the island. Of the 130-plus brick-making kilns that once operated in Kaohsiung, the Sanhe Tile Kiln is the last one standing. This traditional brick and tile factory has been in operation for over 100 years. Considered a national treasure, the factory is part of the cultural heritage of the island.
At the Sanhe Tile Kiln, making quality bricks is serious business. Good clay and water are essential, and fortunately, the Dashu District of Kaohsiung has exceptional clay and water. Workers dig clay out of the ground and put it through a machine to break it up. Water is then added, and the mixture is put into another machine to form clay blocks. When the blocks are the desired shape, they are set aside to dry. Then the bricks are stacked in the kiln. Next, workers start a fire with straw and slowly raise the kiln's temperature until it reaches 1000 degrees Celsius. Throughout this process, the temperature must rise steadily or else the bricks will break.
Making bricks is a long process, taking three to four months. It requires a lot of hard work, patience and dedication. But in the end, it's worth it. I left the Sanhe Tile Kiln with a greater appreciation for the art of brick making.
28. The author was disappointed at first because of ____.
A. the value of the kiln.
B. the appearance of the kiln.
C. the location of the kiln.
D. the history of the kiln.
29. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Sanhe Tile Kiln is still functioning now.
B. Bricks used to come from Shangdong Province.
C. Thousands of brick of kilns were set up all over the island.
D. Making bricks requires a lot of hard work. 30. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By listing figures.
B. By presenting causes.
C. By describing process.
D. By following time order.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. A Place Worth Rebuilding
B. Treasure or Clay?
C. A Cultural Tour
D. Welcome to the Factory!
D
Teenagers who spend more than three hours a day on social media may have double the risk of mental health problems as those who shun it, research suggests. The study of more than 6, 000 children aged 12 to 15 found those who used social media more heavily were more likely to report issues such as depression, anxiety and loneliness, as well as aggression and anti-social behavior, than teenagers who did not use social media. The findings held true even when researchers took into account mental health problems experienced by any young person in the year before they used social media. The recent research, from a team at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland, was published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.
Some previous studies have suggested no link between poorer mental health and screen time. Dr. Rina Dutta, senior clinical lecturer at King's College London, said, “A major strength of this study compared to previous research is that the researchers take into account mental health problems the young people already had a year prior to the measurement of social media use. This largely overcomes the 'what came first-mental health problem or high social media use?' question. ”
Lead author Kira Riehm said, “Many existing studies have found a link between digital or social media use and adolescent health, but few look at this association across time. We cannot conclude that social media causes mental health problems, but we do think that less time on social media may be better for teens' health. ”
The study found that fewer than 17 percent of adolescents did not use social media. Of those who did, 32 percent spent less than 30 minutes a day, 31 percent spent 30 minutes to three hours, 12 percent spent three to six hours and 8 percent spent more than six hours per day.
Ms. Riehm said, “Social media has the ability to connect adolescents who may be excluded in their daily life. We need to find a better way to balance the benefits of social media with possible negative health outcomes. ”
32. What does the underlined word “shun” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Slightly hate.
B. Are doubtful about.
C. Are crazy about.
D. Avoid on purpose.
33. What is special about the recent study on the link between mental health and screen time?
A. People from all walks of life were involved.
B. It allowed for previous mental health problems.
C. Advanced equipment was used to measure screen time.
D. It is the first to find the existence of the link.
34. The statistics in paragraph 4 are mainly about teenagers' ___.
A. academic performance
B. mental health problems
C. social media use
D. social skills
35. What is suggested by Kira Riehm?
A. We should use social media in our favour.
B. Importance should be attached to mental health problems.
C. More related researches should be caried out.
D. Teenagers should get more engaged in their daily life.

In fact, this tip is so powerful that when used in his sleep clinic it can even beat prescription sleep medications (处方药). “The best sleep tip you can ever give somebody is to get up-don't lay in bed awake, ” Grandner said. “Whether it's the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you've been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up and reset. Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy. ” __38__ Because lying in bed awake can form an association in your brain that can lead to chronic insomnia(长期失眠).

Many people view sleeping as the final thing they have to do in a busy day, worth delaying to catch up on housework, schoolwork, office work or television series. That thinking needs to be changed, Grander said. “Don't see your sleep as the amount of time you have left in your day. See your sleep as the amount of time you need in order to set yourself up for a productive tomorrow. ” “Now you know when you have to stop and get ready to go to bed whether you're done or not. 40 And that's harmful and it makes the next day more stressful. ” Grander said.
A. Why is that so important?
B. Change your attitude about sleep
C. Think about your lifestyle and sleep pattern
D. The problem is we don't stop, and we don't disconnect.
E. Listening to music at night may be a good idea for your sleep.
F. As night approaches, levels of melatonin rise, becoming a signal that it's time for bed.
G. Therefore it's important to have a standard wake up time, even on weekends or vacations.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ricky lived in a lovely, futuristic(未来派的)house, which had everything you could ever want. Though he didn’t help much around the house, Ricky was still very pleased when his parents bought him the latest model of robot. As soon as it arrived, off it went, cooking, cleaning, ironing, and-most importantly-gathering up clothes from Ricky's bedroom floor. On that first day, when Ricky went to sleep, he had left his bedroom in a truly disastrous state. When he woke up the next morning, everything was perfectly clean and tidy.
In fact, it was actually “too” clean; now Ricky couldn't find his favorite T-shirt, nor his favorite toy. However much he searched, the two things did not reappear. The same was starting to happen with other things. Ricky began to suspect the robot. He planned to spy on the robot, and began following it around the house. Finally he caught it red-handed, picking up one of Ricky's toys to hide it.
Ricky told his parents that the robot was broken and badly programmed and asked them to have it changed. But his parents told him absolutely not; they were delighted with the new robot, and it cooked like a dream.
One day, the robot was whirring(嗡嗡地响) past, and heard the boy’s complaints. The robot returned with one of the boy's toys, and some clothes for him. “Here, sir. I did not know it was bothering you" said the robot. “How could it not, you thief?! You've been stealing my belongings for weeks!” the boy answered angrily. “The objects were left on the floor. I therefore calculated that you did not like them. I am programmed to collect all that is not wanted, and at night I send it to people who can use it. I am a maximum efficiency(效率) machine. Were you unaware?” the robot said, with a certain pride.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Ricky started feeling ashamed.
Since then, Ricky had decided to become a “maximum efficiency boy”.

书面表达:
第一节
In order to make more people know World Book Day, my classmates and I organized an activity in our community last Saturday afternoon. Established on April 23 by UNESCO, World Book Day is intended to promote reading and writing. In the afternoon, we put up a few colorful posters on the wall and talked to our neighbors introducing this meaningful day. Many kids were invited to play games with us to arouse their interest in reading books, which turned out to be a success because many kids took away the books we prepared after the activity.
I'm convinced that reading is a good habit which can enrich our life, broaden our horizons and of course perfect our personalities. Hopefully, more and more people will find the joy and benefit of reading.
第二节
Ricky started feeling ashamed. He immediately understood that the robot was neither broken nor mis programmed. Rather, it had been programmed extremely well! Regretful, Ricky was at a loss what to do. "Should I remain who I used to be or will I follow the robot's step? How stupid I am to suspect a robot!" He thought to himself, "Probably, it is better to give than to receive. "
Since then, Ricky had decided to become a "maximum efficiency boy". He put real care into how he treated his things. He kept them tidy, and made sure he didn't have more than what was necessary. And, often, he would buy things, and take them along with his good friend, the robot, to help out those other people who needed them. He felt delighted and fortunate that it was the robot that taught him a valuable life lesson.

Hello, listeners. Thanks for joining us again for Green Hour on your local radio station. Today during Green Hour, we will be talking about gardening and giving tips for home gardens. Lots of you may be interested in planting your own gardens, but you're not quite sure where to start or what to do. We have the answers for you. First of all, it's easy to start a simple home garden. You should start small, with just a few plants that are easy to grow. Lettuces and potatoes are strong plants that don't take too much care. You can use a small area of earth in your backyard or even plant the vegetables in large pots. Potatoes need at least six hours of sunlight daily. They grow best where summer temperatures are between 65 and 70 degrees. Lettuces don't need a lot of sunlight. They need about four or five hours of sunlight a day. Also, be sure to take out the weeds and water your garden regularly. Finally, you may need to build a fence around the garden in the backyard to keep it safe from hungry animals. Follow these tips, and you'll be able to watch your little garden grow in no time!(停20秒)
