Starting a new book can feel like a bit of a commitment, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are four books you can read in a single day.
The House on Mango Street
Released in 1984 and written by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street is only 103 pages long. It’s a rapid read for those looking to dip their toes into the water, but it still deals with complex themes and important subject matters including language, race, ageing and troubles.
The Midnight Library
The Midnight Library from the English author Matt Haig was released in 2020. It’s 288 pages, which makes it a little more challenging but still absolutely doable in a single day. The novel is all about storytelling, with Nora Seed exploring the “what ifs” of her life.
The Perilous Life of Jade Yeo
Released in 2012 and written by the fantastic Malaysian-English author Zen Cho, the page count is an extremely manageable 76 pages, which makes this another effective first read in one day. The novel is set in London in the 1920s and follows the life of another writer, Jade Yeo. There is even enough time for readers to appreciate a film adaptation of the book after reading it.
Stardust
The 1999 novel by English author Neil Gaiman is a perfect presentation of the writer’s fantasy stylings at their best. Stardust, which became a major motion picture, sits at 256 pages. It’s epic in its scale, but the reader can fit the novel into a single day, giving them a true sense of absolute escapism to the fantasy land of Stormhold.

Franco Bergamino is like a surprise “hidden recipe” among young people in southwest China’s
Chongqing Municipality, where the 62-year-old Italian chef runs a dessert house called Mimosa.
The dessert house serves wine jelly with green pepper cheese, jasmine mousse and peach-Oolong cake—fusion (融合) desserts that combine Italian specialties with local Chinese ingredients (原料).
Bergamino used to run two dessert houses in his hometown of Turin, both having a history of 90 years. In 2016, he settled in Chongqing and set up a dessert workshop.
“I especially like Chongqing, where the food and culture are completely different from my hometown. Life here is like ‘the other side of the coin’,” he said.
With the help of his local English-speaking friends, he overcame the language barrier and even learned some Chongqing dialects (方言). More importantly, he has got used to the Chinese table culture of “sharing food together”.
Bergamino said, back in Turin, frequent customers to his shop would buy the same desserts and they would be disappointed if they were sold out. The situation in Chongqing, however, is very different. Customers expect different desserts each month, and they would be disappointed if the dessert menu stayed the same, he said.
From 2016 to 2022, Bergamino felt a huge change in the taste of Chinese customers. “In the past, Chinese guests always said that my desserts were too sweet. Now more and more people have accepted the authentic Italian tastes. Mimosa’s consumers are mainly between 25 and 35 a group that is more willing to try overseas tastes partly due to China’s continued opening to the outside world,” he said.
“I hope I can live to 95 and still work,” he said, so that he can, besides bringing authentic Italian desserts to more customers having a sweet tooth, let more people feel the fusion of Chinese and Italian cultures in his desserts.
4.How does Bergamino like his life in Chongqing?
A.It’s aimless. B.It’s hard to adapt to.
C.It’s stressful. D.It’s completely new.
5.What do we know about Mimosa?

C.It’s more popular with young people. D.It’s a window of western table culture.
6.Which of the following best describes Bergamino’s business?
A.Challenging but promising. B.Booming but uncreative.
C.More and more profitable. D.More and more controversial.
7.What’s Bergamino’s expectation in his future dessert career?
A.To add more Italian elements. B.To promote cultural combination.
C.To set up more dessert houses. D.To expand the age group of consumers.

A handful of healthy soil could contain great numbers of living organisms. However, poisonous pesticides (杀虫剂) are causing harm and destruction to them, according to a recent analysis.
For the analysis, researchers looked through nearly 400 published studies including over 2,800 experiments on how pesticides affect soil organisms. They found that pesticides harmed organisms critical to maintaining healthy soils, but these harms have never been considered in the safety reviews of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).Poisonous pesticides are driving factors in the sharp decline of many soil organisms, such as ground beetles. They have been identified as the most significant driver of soil biodiversity loss in the last ten years.
However, that research has always been ignored. The EPA, which is responsible for pesticide supervision(监管)in the country, openly acknowledges that somewhere between 50 and 100 percent of all agriculturally applied pesticides end up on the soil. Yet, to assess pesticides’ harms to soil species, the agency just uses a single test species, the European honeybee, to estimate risk to all soil organisms. It spends its entire life above ground in artificial boxes.
Worse still, as soil health gain popularity globally, pesticide companies have jumped up to green wash and promote their products. Every major company is now advertising its role in improving soil health, such as advocating planting cover crops. As general beliefs, these practices are indeed good for soil health and, if adopted responsibly, are a great step to take. But companies know that these practices are often accompanied by increased pesticide use. Chemicals and pesticides have to be applied more frequently to kill weeds before crops are planted.
The long-term environmental cost can no longer be overlooked. Soils are some of the most complex ecosystems on Earth, containing nearly a quarter of the planet’s biodiversity. Protecting them should be a priority, not an afterthought.
8.What does the underlined word “They” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A.Soil organisms. B.Ground beetles.
C.Artificial boxes. D.Poisonous pesticides.
9.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.The honeybee is a typical species living in nature.
B.The assessment of pesticides’ harms is one-sided.
C.Less than half of applied pesticide go to the soil eventually.
D.The EPA attaches great importance to pesticide inspection.
10.Why do pesticide companies advocate planting cover crops?
A.To obey the EPA’s rules.
B.To increase their product sales.
C.To protect the environment.
D.To shoulder their social responsibility.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Soil: essential to agriculture.
B.Pesticides: harmful to soil health.
C.Organisms: significant to harvest.
D.Pollution: destructive to biodiversity.
D
Saying farewell to someone you love, even for a night, can be difficult, much less saying goodbye for a lifetime or forever in death. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.
Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person.
Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.
The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem.
The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection.
Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello.
12.Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”?
A.icy cold B.clicking sound C.deafening silence D.endless speech
13.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Saying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life.
B.The companion of close friends can lessen sorrow.
C.A person’s identity is connected with relationship.
D.Separation is the sorrowful part of saying goodbye.
14.What gives a person emotional satisfaction in social life?
A.Making more communication with others.
B.Building deep emotional connections with others.
C.Comforting friends with love and intense feelings.
D.Being a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes.
15.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Sweet sorrow is very common in close relationships.
B.The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.
C.Human beings are eager to get emotional fulfillment.
D.Happiness is meaningless without sadness to compare it.

How to Be Happy

Practice active gratefulness.
A lot of researches confirm that being grateful is good for you. It reduces anxiety and depression, helps you become more positive, strengthens your relationships with others, and encourages sympathy.___19___

So he knocked at the door. He was amazed to see a very beautiful young girl open the door for him. He asked the girl for a glass of water instead of a meal.
The young girl thought he must be hungry and thirsty. So she offered him a huge glass of milk. With a surprised look, the boy drank the milk very slowly. At once, he felt he was full of energy.

根据句意可知,上文“A toy animal might not matter much to the average person”与下文“for a child, it could mean the world”之间有转折关系,用表转折关系的连词but或yet连接。故填but/yet。
afford to do... 故填to buy。
故填was。
故填who。

He recognized the girl at once. From that day on, he gave special attention to her illness. He decided to do his best to save her life. With months of hard work, he was finally able to get the disease under control. Everyone praised the doctor. But the girl was quite worried because she couldn't afford the hospital bill. Her family had just a little money in the bank. It was by no means enough to pay for such a long treatment.
Dr. Kevin asked the business office to pass the final bill to him. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. When the bill was sent to the girl, she opened it with shaking hands. She was surprised to see that the bill had been paid. Something on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words "Bill paid years ago with a glass of milk!—by Dr. Kevin". She was quite moved to tears with joy.
