David Durow, 80, a retired former head teacher, needed to adapt to a new way of life after his wife’s death. Durow was hit not only by sadness, but also a sense of the part he had played in his marriage and in society. “Suddenly, I had to think about cooking, cleaning and washing,” he says.
Facing the single life made him realise that he had been “locked” in “a male-dominated society”. “So I started to turn my life upside down and inside out with basically life-changing values. I’d mostly been a common male, leaving for work at 7am and getting home at 7pm, expecting a prepared meal.” It was a shock to realise that, from Monday to Friday, he had “spent more time with co-workers than with my wife and children”.
“What’s frightening is that it’s only happening in the latter part of my life. Where have I been for the last 75 years?” Durow has been devoted to extracurricular activities, from setting up youth groups for children with disabilities to opening a residential home for the cross-generational. He was buried in works by Elizabeth Strout, Sarah Waters and Rebecca Solnit’s article Men Explain Things to Me. Sometimes, he would wake at 3am,get up and write poems with the words he had read in head, which threw light on him, “How I was sorry for thinking that women didn’t know.”
Durow met Jean by online dating. He shared his new thinking with her. “I don’t think she would have ever considered becoming my partner without it. They both cook; Durow does the cleaning. They have joined a book group, where Durow is the only man. He tries to avoid “taking over”, a habit in him after years of lecturing. Sometimes, when a rider disparages(轻视)a female driver, Durow will hear himself say, “Don’t you make the same kind of errors?”
The journey of re-considering his role in relationships has helped him have a fresh understanding of what it is to be a man.
4. What can happen in a “male-dominated society”?
A. Men live with life-changing values.
B. Men spend most of their time with family.
C. Women do most of the housework.
D. Women go out to work.
5. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. Durow was devoted to volunteering.
B. Durow liked reading classics on poems.
C. Durow felt upset about the latter part of his life.
D. Durow began to change his understanding of women.
6. What can we learn about Durow from the last two paragraphs?
A. He used to join book groups.
B. He plays a key part in lecturing.
C. He stops others making the same error.
D. He took on more family responsibilities.
7. In which section of a magazine may this text appear?
A. Life and Society. B. Sports and Health,
C. Literature and Art. D. Education and Culture.
C
I’ve recently become aware of dry texting: the short, single-word replies (Yes, No, OK, Lol) to chatty messages that are viewed as unsatisfactory or hurtful.
Our family chat is dull, an absolute Atacama Desert. Most messages are “k” or “OK”. Interesting news sent by those of us eager to keep a little connection go uncommented on; often unopened. My husband recently sent a link to a news article about the local repair cafe where he volunteers, which, surprisingly, issued a picture of him failing to repair a woman’s pot and telling her “I am sorry for your loss”; neither of our sons reacted.
I can be a dry texter myself, simple in reply to friends who send three-paragraph, multi-message poems. It’s partly a shortage of mental brainpower for more writing outside the day job: a “no words just feelings” means, except “haha” and “great” for feelings. If I could bring myself to get into emoji’s-I can’t-I would absolutely be the “single thumbs-up” kind of texter. The other reason I dry text is I can’t write anything without horribly damaging my typing and being upset by correcting errors. When I try to fix it, I end up hitting the M rather than delete, so most of my messages read: “We we’re mmmmmmmm”. I could change my keyboard settings, but it’s easier to go silent.
Anyway, to me, there’s an economical, haiku-like poem to dry texting. My last four messages from my stepfather are “Yes”, “OK”, “Good” and “OK”. The link between me and my husband is mainly “Dog?”, “T’es où” (where are you), “Kfé?” (coffee) and “Yep”. He used a single emoji back in January and I’m still getting over it. It makes the more expansive (健谈的) messages extra special, too, for example, when my husband naturally says he’s missing me. Those in textual relationships with more talkative types will never know that amazement.
8. Why does the author mention her husband in paragraph 2?
A. To define a rule.
B. To present a fact.
C. To prove a point.
D. To introduce a topic.
9. What can account for the author’s dry texting?
A. She is poor in typing.
B. She is busy with work.
C. She is eager for silence.
D. She is addicted to emoji’s.
10. What does the underlined word “delete” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Remove. B. Confirm. C. Exit D. Click.
11. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude to dry texting?
A Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Unclear.
D
In October, the wildlife group of Himachal Pradesh reintroduced bred-in-captivity (圈养的) Cheer Pheasants (彩雉) into the wild to increase the falling population of this endangered bird.
It is the first attempt of its kind in India. Already, the HP wildlife group is considering the experiment a success. “Out of the 18 birds set free past October-six adults and 12 young ones-11 are still surviving,” says Dr Savita, Chief Wildlife Warden, HP. “According to international standards, even if 20 percent survive for at least a year, the experiment is considered successful.” The birds have been in the wild for eight months now, still four months short of the critical one year period. But having survived the cold winters, survival now should relatively be a walk in the park for these birds.
Reintroduction of any species into the wild requires painstaking efforts, and this experiment is no exception. The first step of the experiment was setting up a conservation breeding facility (繁殖设施) in Chail. The next step was their pairing. “Before the pairing, the genetic analysis was carried out,” says Dr Savita. “Besides, they were often screened for diseases and infections (感染) before they were set free.” Even one diseased bird could infect the entire population in the habitat.
Eventually, three pairs and their 12 chicks were chosen for a flight into the wild. The site chosen for their release (放飞) was a small hill in village Seri. Throwing them straight into the deep end could have proved a disaster, so soft-release was planned. For a month, the birds were kept in-three enclosed pens at the release site. Each pen mirrored their habitat with branches and bushes inside.
A month later, they were allowed to move out to live the life they were actually supposed to. The surviving 11 birds were closely tracked and they seem to have adapted well to the new surroundings. In another four months, the hill in village Seri could become a striking place on the wildlife map.
12. Which of the following best describes “a walk in the park” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Alarming. B. Meaningful. C. Challenging. D. Easy
13. What did the birds go through before they were set free?
A. They lived in the park for some time.
B. They suffered from disasters.
C. They learned to fit in with the wild life.
D. They were examined on a daily basis.
14. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Returning to the Wild
B. Saving the Wild Birds
C. A Soft Release of Birds
D. A Successful Bird Research
15. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Over years, there’s one thing I’ve collected more than any other: books. They slowly piled up (堆积) around until I made a decision—to clear away some of them.____16____ But with the possibility for an international move, it seemed unreasonable to keep ones that I wouldn’t be able to carry.
Then what was left were my favorites. Instead of taking over every corner in my home, my collection now includes two organized shelves. ____17____
I have some books set in New York. They take me back to the rush of early morning rides or of summer weekends. My San Francisco collection mainly includes Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. I pull them off the shelf when I feel disappointed in the place I now call home, and I let them take me to a happier view of this city.____18____ When I lived there, I never found myself reading books set there. But since I moved away, they’ve become my favorites.
____19____ That’s what my pile of library books mainly have. I enjoy reading about places that I’d hardly want to call home, and I often try to read a novel or two ‘set in a location I’m going to. After all, the point of reading is exploration; it is a form of travel, a way to go somewhere new through written words.
The books that have earned their place on my shelf, however, are those I share a history with. ____20____ While you can’t always go home, a book can bring you there.
A. It was really a painful activity.
B. Then there’s my row of Miami books.
C. I still read books that are set in places I haven’t lived in, of course.
D. I didn’t mean to keep the books connected with my previous experience.
E. I never know when I’ll find myself missing a place, so I stay with the books.
F. When reading them, I’m taken back to places where I once lived and the person I was.
G. With this new organization, I could see most books are novels set in places I’ve lived.

The story started when the Marches were driving home on a cold winter evening.
It was almost 11:00 pm. They were waiting at a red traffic light when they spotted a middle-aged man walking across the road. He dragged his leg, wrapped up his overcoat and hurried by, looking tired and depressed.
The couple felt a need to give him a hand. Then they pulled over and offered him a lift. The man felt surprised at first but soon he accepted their offer and showed his appreciation.
On the way home, they had a chat. They learned the man called Bill was a security guard of a company, which was on the other side of the city. Every day it would take him about 3 hours to travel there by public transportation and the same time back home. The long trip left him only time for work and sleep. Sometimes if he missed the last bus, just as that day, he would have no time to sleep. He had had a car, but because of several hardships in his family, he had to sell it for money.
The Marches didn’t return until they sent Bill to his home. That might have been the end of the story, but they couldn’t take Bill’s 6-hour daily trip and his hardship off their minds. His experience reminded the couple of their own previous struggles in their early life. Short of money, they counted every coin to cover the cost. In order to support life, they walked to the office in the distance, despite hot or cold. Hopelessness and disappointment clouded their life. This time, they thought the trip with Bill wasn’t over.

Music and Me
Good morning. I’m Contestant No.1. I’m honored to have the opportunity to deliver a speech on the topic “Music and Me”.
As we all know, music performs an important role in our daily life. It enables us to feel relaxed both mentally and physically, giving us energy. When I’m in trouble, music can lift up my spirits and inspire me to overcome difficulties. There are various styles of music in the world. The Chinese traditional music is my favourite, which sounds peaceful and touches my soul.
I hope all of you will somehow begin to treasure music and make it a part of your life. Thank you for your listening.

The Marches thought of ways to raise money. First, they blogged about their experience to make their friends know about it. Then they posted their plan on Facebook and started a special website, hoping to get support from the public. Within 3 days, more and more people replied and thought highly of the couple’s act of kindness. Soon, with the money donated by warm-hearted people, the couple bought a new car for Bill and paid a visit to Bill’s home. The moment Bill opened the door, he recognized the kind couple, feeling surprised.
Then they handed the keys of the car to Bill. He stared at the keys, his mouth wide open out of curiosity. “A new car for you. We hope it can help you have a sound sleep.” said Mr. March, smiling warmly and pressing the keys in Bill’s hand. Bill could hardly believe his ears, with his eyes shining brightly. He held the keys tightly and bowed to the Marches to show his gratitude. Later, the Marches posted the emotional moment online, sharing the sense of pride and happiness that kindness brought.
