Canyoning

The sports of canyoning (蹦谷) explore the high­energy environment where water meets rock on the coast. Protected by wetsuits and helmets, people jump from cliffs and waterfalls and discover caves that would not normally be arrived at.

Last September, British artist Sacha Jafri set the record for creating the world's largest painting. Last week, the painting was sold for $62 million, which will go to charity.

Last year, as COVID­19 spread and many countries went into lockdown, Mr. Jafri was in Dubai. Rather than feeling stuck, Mr. Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could “make a really big difference”．

He decided to create the world's largest painting. And he wanted to do it in a way that would include people from around the world. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic(疫情). He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries.

Using the children's ideas as a starting point, Mr. Jafri began to paint in a huge dancing room in a fancy hotel. It took Mr. Jafri seven months to create the painting. He worked long hours every day—often up to 20 hours a day. He hurt his back by bending over so much while he painted. It took over 1，000 paintbrushes and  6，300 liters of paint to create the painting. The painting, which was over 1，600 square meters, was around the size of four basketball courts.

Mr. Jafri hoped that his painting, called “The Journey of Humanity”， would help bring the world together during a difficult time. Since Mr. Jafri's goal was to raise money to help children suffering from the pandemic, the painting was split up into 70 large parts. Mr. Jafri hoped that by selling the parts separately, he could raise $30 million.

But when the auction(拍卖) ended on March 22, Mr. Jafri did much better than that. A French businessman bought all the pieces. Knowing that the money would go to charity also motivated him to decide to pay more. He says he was poor when he grew up, so he's glad to be helping children around the world by buying the painting.

The UK Space Agency (UKSA) has given more than ￡1 million towards tracking satellites and space junk in orbit.

The money will be given to seven companies that are working on ways to develop new sensor technologies that spot objects in space, working out what they are and track them.

Finding better ways to monitor everything currently in orbit has become a big priority because, with more and more satellites being launched, there is growing concern about the possibility of collisions.

Added to that are around 900，000 objects—made up of old space equipment that no longer works, and junk like gloves and tool kits accidentally dropped by astronauts—that are still in orbit. The UK Space Agency is owned by the government and is responsible for strengthening the UK's position in the space sector (领域)．

Although some space junk is very small, only around 1 cm, it could do a lot of damage and even completely destroy a spacecraft if there was a high­speed collision. It is hoped that the new research can create something like an automated traffic management system in the future, which will keep functioning satellites out of harm's way.

Jacob Geer from UKSA said, “Space tracking is one of the key things we can do to keep safe those satellites we rely on now, and to make sure certain orbits don't become obstructed for future generations because there is too much junk in them.”

The Ministry of Defence and UKSA recently agreed to work together when it comes to space, with both having valuable satellites in orbit that they want to protect.

The UK government is now part­owner of the OneWeb satellite broadband company, which has launched 74 satellites and has plans to put up thousands more.

The days of staring at the computer screen pretending to be interested in an assignment even though you are bored out of your mind may soon be coming to an end. That's because if Dr Harry Witchel, Discipline Leader in Physiology at England's Brighton and Sussex Medical School, has his way, computers of the future will be able to detect boredom and even react to it real­time.

But before you get concerned, the machine is not reading your mind. It is just keeping track of the constant involuntary(无意识的)movements that people exhibit when in front of a computer or even a television. These are not the bigger instrumental actions like moving a mouse or using the remote, but barely noticeable movements like scratching, fidgeting, or stretching. Witchel says the level of movement is directly linked to how absorbed the person is in what he or she is reading or watching. The higher the interest level, the less the movement!

To test the theory, Witchel and his team invited 27 people and exposed them to a variety of digital content for three minutes at a time. The activities ranged from playing online games to reading documents like the banking regulations that most people would find boring.

A video motion tracker monitored their movements as they powered through each assignment. Just as the researchers had expected, the involuntary actions decreased dramatically, by as much as 42%, when the participants were totally absorbed in what they were reading or seeing.

Fortunately, the scientists are not planning to use the findings to create machines that report students who are not focusing at school. Instead, they believe that combining the motion detecting technology with future computers will help enhance the digital learning experience.

The scientists say that being able to measure the students' interest level will enable educators to adjust the materials real­time and re­engage the students. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions.
