The famous Trans-Siberian Railway(TSR) line goes from Moscow to Vladivostok, but there’s another railway line about 650 kilometres north of and parallel to the Trans-Siberian Railway. This is the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM). A special train, the Matvei Mudrov (MM) medical train, travels along its 4,000 kilometres.
There are usually between twelve and fifteen doctors on the train. The train stops for a day in each of the small towns and villages along the BAM. People who live in these remote places with few doctors or hospitals come to the train for medical attention.
The train was named after a Russian doctor in the nineteenth century.Nowadays, the MM visits each town or village on the BAM twice a year.In the village of Khani (its population was 764 according to the Russian Census of 2010),the patients include a man with two broken ankles and a teenage girl. The girl caught a serious disease a month ago and was lucky to travel to a town three hours away for an operation. The MM doesn’t have any equipment to do operations. But the doctors can diagnose(诊断)their patients’ medical problems and recommend treatment and medicines. The train has a laboratory for blood and a number of medical testing machines.
Next stop is a town called Berkakit.About 4,000 people live here. There is a queue to see the doctors.Mikhail Zdanovich,61,is waiting for his turn.He came to Berkakit in 1976,where, at the time, there were only about 100 young people.Zdanovich met a woman who worked at the town bakery. They married and settled in the town.
For the people who live in this remote part of Russia, the MM is more than a medical train. It’s a bridge to the other communities of the country.
24.What is the BAM?
A.A part of the TSR. B.A Russian medical team.
C.A train for doctors to travel on. D.A railway line crossing part of Russia.
25.Where does the MM stop?
A.In places providing little medical care.
B.In places with no doctors or hospitals.
C.In towns and villages along the TSR.
D.In towns and villages with at least 1,000 people.
26.What main service does the MM offer?
A.Helping doctors along the railway line.
B.Dealing with people’s health problems.
C.Doing operations for poor people.
D.Sending medical equipment.
27.What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Russia should have more MMs.
B.Poor people need more medical help.
C.The MM is also a social connection.
D.Remote places need follow other communities.

Think you have already reached your peak(顶峰)in life? You might want to think again.According to new research,we’re happiest at two points in our lives — not just one.Researchers at the London School of Economics and Political Science asked 23,000 German volunteers aged 17 to 85 to rate their life satisfaction.Participants predicted how happy they would feel in five years, and then, after five years’ time, reported back on how they actually felt.
Their results? Anything but unpleasant! The study found that happiness tends to follow a U-shaped curve(曲线) over an individual’s lifetime, with satisfaction reaching higher levels during the extremes of the study’s age range and swinging down in middle age.Plus the researchers noted the two most important years when happiness peaks:ages 23 and 69.
As is shown in our daily life,it makes a lot of sense. In our early 20s,we’re energetic and excited about the changes that come along with young age:new jobs, new places to travel, and new people to meet.By the time we reach our 60s and 70s,though,we have likely retired and can now find the time — not to mention the money — to book a flight to Hawaii at a moment’s notice. After all, your 40+ years are a busy time filled with raising families, climbing the corporate ladder, and you know,it’s the life in general.
Of course, that’s all the more reason to find easy ways to be happier without really trying, regardless of your age! Experts recommend prioritizing(优先考虑)small yet rewarding tasks like taking a walk or spending time with family.Just remember, now you have one more reason to look forward to getting older:an increase in happiness!
28.What does the author think of the research results?
A.They are satisfactory. B.They are doubtful.
C.They are predictable. D.They are surprising.
29.What does the underlined word "it" refer to in paragraph 3?
A.The first peak in life. B.The second peak in life.
C.The study’s age range. D.The outcome of the research.
30.When is the dip of the U-shaped curve in a lifetime?
A.In one’s teens. B.In one’s twenties.
C.In one’s forties. D.In one’s sixties.
31.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Happiness is U-shaped B.The older, the happier
C.How to be happier D.The happiest ages in life
D
We’ve all had the experience of wanting to get a project done but putting it off to a later date.So why do we delay things? Are we built to operate this way at some times?
These questions are central to my research on goal pursuit(追求).It all starts with a simple choice between working now on a given project and doing anything else. The decision to work on something is driven by how much we value accomplishing the project in that moment — what psychologists call its subjective value. And delay,in psychological terms,is what happens when the value of doing something else outweighs the value of working now.
This way of thinking suggests a simple trick to defeat delay. For example, instead of cleaning my house,I might try to focus on why grading papers is personally important to me.It’s simple advice, but sticking to this strategy(策略) can be quite difficult.
People are not entirely wise in the way they value things. For example,a dollar bill is worth exactly the same today as it is a week from now,but its subjective value — roughly how good it would feel to own a dollar — depends on other factors besides its face value, such as when we receive it.The tendency for people to devalue money and other goods based on time is called delay discounting. For example, receiving $100 three months from now is worth the same to people as receiving $83 right now.People would rather lose $17 than wait a few months to get a larger reward.
Getting something done is a delayed reward,so its value in the present is reduced:the further away the deadline is,the less attractive it seems to work on the project right now.The tendency to delay things closely follows economic models of delay discounting. One way to manage it is to make the finish line seem closer. For example, vividly imagining a future reward reduces delay discounting.
32.Which of the following best explains "outweighs" underlined in paragraph 2?
A.Is equal to. B.Is greater than. C.Is involved in. D.Is central to.
33.What should we do to overcome delay in the author’s opinion?
A.Avoid setting a deadline too strictly.
B.Consider doing nothing temporarily.
C.Increase the subjective value of working now.
D.Realize great fun of working immediately.
34.Which proverb can best summarize the theory of delay discounting?
A.Time and tide wait for no man.
B.A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
C.One of these days is none of these days.
D.Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.
35.What is suggested to deal with delay discounting?
A.Asking for nothing in return. B.Lowering our high expectations.
C.Searching for instant satisfaction. D.Making future rewards more inviting.
