Tw high schl students have identified fur new planets in distant space abut 200-light-years frm Earth, making them “the yungest astrnmers” t make such a discvery.
Kartik Pingle, 16, and Jasmine Wright, 18, wh bth attend schls in Massachusetts, participated in the Student Research Mentring Prgram (SRMP). With the help f Tansu Daylan, an MIT dctr fr Astrphysics and Space Research, the students studied and analyzed data frm the Transiting Explanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Tgether they fcused n Tess Object f Interest (TOI) 1233, a nearby, bright sun-like star and here they fund fur planets rtating (旋转) arund the star. “We were lking t see changes in light ver time,” Pingle explained, “the idea is that if the planet transits the star, r passes in frnt f it, it wuld peridically cver up the star and decrease its brightness.”
While studying 1233, Pingle and Wright had at least hped t find ne planet, but were verwhelmed with jy when a ttal f fur were sptted. “I was very excited and very shcked.” Wright said. “We knew this was the gal f Daylan’s research, but t actually find a multi-planetary system, and be part f the discvering team, was really cl.”
Three f the newly discvered planets are cnsidered as “sub-Neptunes”, which are gaseus, but smaller than the Neptune that lives in ur slar system. While bserving the planets, the team determined each ne cmpletes their rbit arund 1233 every six t 19.5 days. Hwever, the furth planet is labeled a “super-Earth” fr its large size and rckiness --- this ne rbits arund the star in just under fur days.
“We have lng been studying planets beynd ur slar system and with multi-planetary systems, the tw yung students are kind f hitting the jackpt. They are really blessed.” Daylan said, “The planets riginated frm the same disk f matter arund the same star, but they ended up being different planets with different atmspheres and different climates due t their different rbits. S, we wuld like t understand the fundamental prcesses f planet frmatin and evlutin using this planetary system.”
Daylan added that it was a “win-win” t wrk with Pingle and Wright n the study. “As a researcher, I really enjy interacting with yung brains that are pen t experimentatin and learning and have minimal bias.” he said, “I als think it is very beneficial t high schl students, since they get expsure t cutting-edge research and this prepares them quickly fr a research career.”
28. Hw did the tw students identify the fur planets?
A. By helping prfessr Tansu Daylan with the data.
B. By analyzing the change f brightness f star 1233.
C. By studying Neptune that lives in ur slar system.
D. By interacting with ther yung talented brains.

Brn frm the accessibility f mass air travel, mdern internatinal turism has been ppularized as “hliday-making” in regins that ffer cmparative advantages f sand, sun and sea. Travel is ften prtrayed as a tl fr persnal grwth and turism as an ecnmic mtr fr destinatin cuntries and cities. There is a tendency t assume that turism is gd fr everyne invlved.
Tday the big bang f turism drives ver 1.2 billin turists acrss internatinal brders annually. Many ppular places are literally being lved t death. Recent prtests in prts f call like Venice and Barcelna against disturbances created by cruise ships shw the unfrtunate cnsequences f emphasizing quantity ver quality in turism.
Uncntrlled turism develpment has becme a primary driver f scial and envirnmental disruptin. Turism studies prvide much dcumentatin f the many negative scial impacts f turism and resulting resentment that lcal ppulatins direct tward visitrs.
Antagnism tward turists typically develps in mature, heavily visited destinatins. Prtests in heavily visited destinatins suggest that traditinal turism has verstayed its welcme.
Residents ften becme frustrated when the benefits f turism are nt felt lcally. Althugh it can generate freign exchange, incme and emplyment, there’s n guarantee that multinatinal htel chains will allcate these benefits equitably amng lcal cmmunities.
On the cntrary, when peple stay at large resrts r n cruise ships, they make mst f their purchases there, leaving lcal cmmunities little pprtunity t benefit frm turist spending. These frms f turism widen ecnmic and plitical gaps between haves and have-nts at lcal destinatins.

Fr example, data shw that turism activity crrespnds t increased scial prblems as lcal residents adpt the behavirs f turists.
What des all this mean fr the everyday traveler?
First, all turists shuld make every effrt t hnr their hsts and respect lcal cnditins. This means being prepared t adapt t lcal custms and nrms, rather than expecting lcal cnditins t adapt t travelers.
Secnd, turism is a market-based activity and wrks best when cnsumers reward better perfrmers. In the infrmatin age, there’s little excuse fr travelers being uninfrmed abut where their vacatin mney ges and wh it enriches.
Infrmed travelers als are better able t distinguish between multinatinal cmpanies and lcal entrepreneurs whse businesses prvide direct scial, envirnmental, and ecnmic benefits fr lcal residents. Such businesses are in lve with the destinatin and are therefre deserving f market reward. In the lng run, being a respnsible traveler means ensuring net psitive impacts fr lcal peple and envirnments. With the infrmatin available at ur fingertips, there has never been mre pprtunity t d s.
32.What is the ppular assumptin abut internatinal turism?
A. Its benefits may cmpensate fr the adverse envirnmental cnsequences.
B. Its rapid develpment is attributed t peple’s imprved living standard.
C. It appeals t peple in places with favrable gegraphical cnditins.
D. It cntributes t the ecnmy f destinatin cuntries and regins.
33. Why des the authr say lcal residents f ppular destinatins ften feel frustrated?
A. They fall victim t scial cnflicts and envirnmental disturbances.
B. They have little pprtunity t enjy themselves n cruise ships.
C. They cannt find emplyment in multinatinal htel chains.
D. They d nt think they benefit as much as they deserve.
34. What d we learn frm sme studies abut uncntrlled turism develpment?
A. It gives rise t an increase in mass cnfrntatins.
B. It inhibits the steady grwth f lcal ecnmy.
C. It incurs lcal residents’ antagnism t turists.
D. It brings in a large chunk f mbile ppulatin.
35. What can turists d t exert mre psitive impacts n the turist destinatins?
A. Shw interest in lcal custms and lifestyles.
B. Use the services prvided by lcal businesses.
C. Seek pssibilities t invest in lcal cmpanies.
D. Give favrable cmments abut their services.
