Mark Baker’s appreciation for nature runs deep, but he hasn’t always championed the Amazon rainforest’s rugged beauty.
For eight years, Mr. Baker’s business sold rare tropical wood from the Amazon to customers across the United States. Exporting wood provided him with an excuse to spend a lot of time in the rainforest, taking him back to his boyhood days. Mr. Baker told himself that selective harvest was just part of managing the resource.
But gradually he began to notice on his birding outings that the forest had grown quieter. On the Manaus docks, he saw wood for export labeled with the name of a type of wood legal to export, but knew that it was another illegal type. “It took me eight years to come to the realization that the construct that you can selectively harvest and manage the forest was a bunch of nonsense,” he says. “I couldn’t do it anymore.”
Because of his own personal transformation, Mr. Baker founded an ecotourism company that takes tourists along Brazil’s Rio Negro. With the trips, he aims to foster appreciation and a sense of stewardship(管理)for the rainforest among global citizens.
The Amazon rainforest covers more than 2.3 million square miles and is the biggest carbon store in the world, according to Giordane Martins, a biologist. Forty percent of Brazil’s land lies in the Amazon, but roughly 20% of it is already deforested. Ecotourism, what Mark is doing, has a positive impact.
“Our role is to educate,” Mark says. “Many people arrive with that nature sensibility. Some acquire it on our tours. One of the goals of ecotourism is to share the economic benefits of travel. The other is to help promote conservation, to generate income and help protect the forest. We’ve seen that happen. I wish we could say we saved the rainforest. We haven’t. But we have had an impact.”
    4. Why did Mark Baker quit exporting wood business?
    A. Because he didn’t earn enough money.
    B. Because he couldn’t stay in the rainforest and recall his boyhood days any more.
    C. Because he realized it was nonsense to harvest selectively and manage the forest.
    D. Because he was angry to see all wood for export in his company was another type.
    5. Which of the following statements is WRONG?
    A. The Amazon forest is a most important carbon resource for our globe.
    B. All tourists come to visit the Amazon rainforest with nature sensibility.
    C. The Amazon rainforest has lost a lot of trees due to human activities.
    D. The ecotourism company founded by Mark Baker hasn’t made a grand success.
    6. Which of the following can best describe Mark Baker?
    A. Environmentally conscious and selfish.
    B. Profit-oriented and competent.
    C. Socially responsible and determined.
    D. Smart and pessimistic.
    7. What can we learn about the ecotourism from the last paragraph?
    A. It has a positive impact.
    B. It has saved the rainforest.
    C. It is profitable but meaningless.
    D. It provides academic education.
    C
“Jelly” ice may one day replace the cubes chilling your cold drink. Jelly ice cubes are made of hydrogels(水凝胶). They can be used again and again, which can save water. Plus, unlike plastic freezer packs, at the end of their useful life, they won’t leave behind long-lived plastic waste. You can also use these cubes to boost garden growth.
Finally, they may make storage of frozen food cleaner. Actually, that’s where “the original idea started,” says Luxin Wang, a microbiologist at the University of California (UC), Davis. As regular ice melts, bacteria can hitch a ride in that water to other foods stored in the same place.
The UC Davis team packed food samples into foam-insulated containers and chilled the food with jelly ice cubes or regular ice. Sensors measured changes in the food’s temperature. Normal ice worked better, but not by much. For example, after 50 minutes, the temperature of an ice-cooled sample was 3.4℃. The sample cooled by jelly ice cubes was 4.4℃.
They also tested the hydrogel’s strength. Its structure is made mostly of a protein called gelatin(明胶). Hydrogels with a higher gelatin percentage were stronger but showed lower cooling efficiency. Tests revealed that hydrogels with 10% gelatin showed the best balance of cooling and strength.
Now jelly ice cubes aren’t yet ready. “This is a prototype,” Wang says. “As we move forward, there will be additional improvements.” The eco-friendly potential of the cubes is the “big goal”, according to Wang. The hydrogel could promote a “circular economy,” she says. “When you use up something, such as these cubes, they could go back to the environment.”
    8. What does the first paragraph tell us about jelly ice cubes?
    A. They are efficient. B. They are practical.
    C. They are eco-friendly. D. They are easily operated.
    9. What was the purpose of the UC Davis team’s experiment in paragraph 3?
    A. To test the use of jelly ice cubes in real life.
    B. To test the ability to chill food of jelly ice cubes.
    C. To test the cleaning efficiency of jelly ice cubes.
    D. To test the reaction of jelly ice cubes in containers.
    10. What plays the most important role in the hydrogel’s strength?
    A. The type of gelatin used. B. The amount of gelatin used.
    C. The size of the jelly ice cube. D. The temperature of the jelly ice cube.
    11. What does the underline word “prototype” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. A typical example. B. An advanced model.
    C. A full-scale model of a vehicle. D. An original model.
    D
Following the disastrous handling of COVID-19, the spread of monkeypox is another microcosm (社会缩影) of the racial gaps and health inequity in the United States.
With the number of infections surpassing 20,000, the United States now leads the world in monkeypox cases. Like a replay of the COVID-19 outbreak, Black and Hispanic Americans in the country still bear an improper burden in the public health emergency. They make up the majority of monkeypox cases but are underrepresented in vaccine distribution.
Signs show the number of infections in the country is slowing, but racial divides are worsening in monkeypox cases and vaccine access. Over 38 percent of the monkeypox infections are among Black people, who represent only 13.6 percent of the country’s population of 335 million. Similarly, Hispanic or Latino people account for 28.3 percent of the total cases as of Sept. 3 but are only 19 percent of the U.S. population. By contrast, the share of White people in the total contracted cases fell heavily from 75 percent as of May 20 to 27.5 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Similar trends in racial gaps can be seen among U.S. states and cities with the most monkeypox cases. For example, Black or African American residents make up 55 percent of all monkeypox cases but just 24 percent of vaccinations in Philadelphia, city data showed. White Philadelphians make up 24 percent of cases but have received 56 percent of first shots.
“Unfortunately, it’s not that surprising,” said Mark Abdelmalek, a dermatologist who has treated monkeypox patients. “History kind of repeats itself. We see unfair health treatment across many aspects of medicine, and to think that this wouldn’t be one of them is a little naive.” The dermatologist added, “I mean we saw it with COVID. It speaks to the fact that we have a lot of work to do to meet people where they are.”
    12. What can be inferred from Para 3?
    A. The scale of monkeypox infections is declining.
    B. Monkeypox has caused a great loss to the US.
    C. Monkey is more dangerous to Black, Hispanic and Latino People.
    D. White Americans are favored in monkeypox cases and vaccine access.
    13. What may be the reason for White Philadelphians having lower infection?
    A. Having vaccinations. B. Using masks.
    C. Taking fine medicine. D. Avoiding contacting Black people.
    14. What does Mark Abdelmalek think of the current monkeypox situation?
    A. Inspiring. B. Satisfying.
    C. Disappointing. D. Interesting.
    15. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. Monkeypox breaks out widely in the US
    B. Monkeypox again exposes U.S. racial gaps
    C. Covid-19 is handled terribly in the USA
    D. Monkeypox is getting more severe than Covid-19

    【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. A

    【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11.

Signs show the number of infections in the country is slowing but racial divides are worsening in monkeypox cases and vaccine access.
    【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

    【答案】One Possible Version
Strive to Live out Our Dream
Since I got into senior high school, I’ve been dreaming of studying in a key university in Shanghai, which is a dynamic city and appeals to me. To be a good programmer is my fighting goal. However, easily distracted by things around myself, I find it hard to stay focused on study sometimes. And my confidence gets defeated quite often because of my poor grades in math.
To achieve my dream, I’ve worked out a study plan. From now on, besides listening carefully in class, I will turn to my teachers and fellow students to make up for what I’ve missed in class and do more exercises to improve my scores of all subjects, especially math. I’m firmly convinced that it is persistence that makes one’s dream come true. Hopefully, I will get admitted to ideal university next year through my great efforts.
