    The best books for kids
Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth
Hilo doesn’t know where he’s from, why he fell out of the sky, what he’s doing on Earth — or why he can’t go to school in only his underwear. This series by Judd Winick is as funny as it is exciting, and tells the action-packed adventures of the boy robot who cares deeply about his human friends. Ages 5 — 12.
Who Was? and What Was? series

    Holes
One of the rare books to win both a Newbery Medal and a National Book Award, the story by Louis Sachar follows Stanley Yelnats as he fights with the curse (诅咒) that has followed his family for generations. A typical child plays many roles, such as friend, neighbor, son or daughter. Simply reminding children of that fact can lead to better problem-solving and more flexible thinking, according to new research from Duke University.
Better problem-solving was just one positive finding of the study, said lead author Sarah Gaither, an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke. After thinking about their own various identities, children also showed more flexible thinking about race and other social groupings—a behavior that could be valuable in an increasingly diverse society.
In a series of experiments, Gaither and her colleagues looked at 196 children, ages 6 and 7. In an experiment, one group of children was reminded that they had various identities, such as son, daughter, reader or helper. A second group of children was reminded of their multiple physical attributes, such as a mouth, arms and legs. All the children then needed to handle a few tasks
Children who were reminded of their various identities showed stronger problem-solving and creative thinking skills. When shown pictures of a bear staring at honey-filled beehive(蜂窝)high up in a tree, these children had more creative ideas for how the bear might get the honey, such as turning over a bowl so that it became a stool(凳子). In other words, they saw a new use for the bowl. Children who were reminded of their multiple roles also showed more flexible thinking about social groupings. When asked to categorize different photos of faces, they suggested many ways to Spso. They identified smiling faces such as unsmiling ones, and old and young faces. The other children, meanwhile, primarily grouped people’s faces by race and gender(性别).
The-study suggests ways to promote flexible thinking for the young, which could be especially valuable for teachers." Gaither said.
“We have this tendency in our society to only think about ourselves in connection with one important group at a time,” Gaither said. “When kids think that they have various identities, they show greater abilities. ’’
    4. What are all the kids asked to do in the experiments?
    A. Play different kinds of roles. B. Remind others of their roles.
    C. Approach several tasks. D. Classify a group of tasks.
    5. How does the author mainly clarify the conclusions of the study in paragraph 4?
    A. By giving examples. B. By using experts’ words.
    C. By listing a few figures. D. By showing cause and effect.
    6. What can we learn from Sarah Gaither’s words?
    A. Improving 5 kids flexible thinking ability is important teaching.
    B. Kids tend to behave selflessly after thinking about their roles.
    C. Kids’ creative thinking ability is easy to discover and develop.
    D. Teachers are supposed to make the most of the kids’ flexibility.
    7. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Kids' Social Abilities Are Consistent with. Their Education
    B. Considering Their Various Roles Improves Kids’ Abilities
    C. Kids Have a Variety of Identities in Their Daily Life.
    D. Problem-solving Ability Is Necessary for Most Kids.
    C
Currently, video calls are becoming familiar challenges as the COVID-19 forces workers to communicate from their homes and offices.
Now scientists have revealed why we tend to end up raising our voices at our workmates: as video quality falls, we speak louder and vary our gestures (手势) in an attempt to make up.
“The gestures we make while talking, as well as other visual signals, are truly important and integrated aspects of how we communicate,” said Dr. James Trujillo, the first author of the research at Radboud University, in the Netherlands.
Trujillo said previous research had shown that when we cannot hear someone well, we speak louder, while the team’s recent work shows that when a video call is very noisy, people make their gestures more noticeable. Trujillo and his colleagues reported in a journal how they analyzed video calls between 20 pairs of participants, who sat in separate rooms and chatted freely to each other over a Zoom-like video call for 40 minutes. Over the course of the call, the quality of the video was changed in 10 steps between excellent and completely unclear, with half of the pairs experiencing improving video quality, and half experiencing it in the opposite way. The video quality during the call at each step was the same for both participants. The research tracked the participants’ gestures and aspects of their speech.
The team added that when gestures were not being used, speech was unaffected by decreases in visibility. However, when gestures were used, volume increased by up to five decibels (分贝) as video quality deteriorated, and then remained at this higher level as video quality decreased further—in other words, when gestures ceased to be useful at all.
“They know that the gestures being produce are vital to their communication, but their partner is going to have a harder time seeing them. So they increase the strength of the other signal — speech.” he said.
    8. Why do we tend to raise our voices on video call?
    A. Due to the poor video quality.
    B. In the hope of curing our poor hearing.
    C. In an attempt to avoid making gestures.
    D. For the sake of generating interest in the topic.
    9. What do we know from paragraphs 3 — 4?
    A. Recent findings agree with previous ones.
    B. Participants made the video call in equal measure.
    C. Integrated factors make for effective communication.
    D. Dr. James Trujillo is the first person to look into the topic.
    10. What does the underlined word “deteriorated” mean in paragraph 5?
    A. Turned better. B. Grew unstable.
    C. Became worse. D. Remained unchanged.
    11. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
    A. Lift up, we can’t catch you B. Cheer up, we won’t fail you
    C. Shut up, we can’t reach you D. Speak up, we can’t see you
    D
Between a quarter and one third of all marine species rely on coral reefs (珊瑚礁)at some point in their life cycle. The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef, covers nearly 133,000 square miles and is home to more than 1,500 species of fish, 411 species of hard coral and dozens of other species.
Australian's Great Barrier Reef has lost 50% of its coral populations in the last three decades, with climate change a key driver of reef disturbance, a new study has found.
Researchers from the Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, in Queensland, northeastern Australia, studied coral communities and their colony size along the length of the Great Barrier Reef between 1995 and 2017, finding reduction of virtually all coral populations.
“We found the number of small, medium and large coral on the Great Barrier Reef has dropped by more than 50% since the 1990s," reported co-author Terry Hughes, a professor at the centre, in a statement.
Reefs are basic to the health of marine ecosystems — without them, ecosystems collapse, and marine life dies. Coral population sizes are also considered important when it comes to the coral's ability to reproduce." A coral population has millions of small, baby corals, as well as many large ones,“ said Andy Dietzel, a doctoral student in a statement. "Our results show the ability of the Great Barrier Reef to recover becomes weak compared to the past," he added.
Population falls occurred in both shallow and deep water coral species experts found, but branching coral and table-shaped coral — which provide habitats for fish — were worst affected by mass bleaching (白化)events in 2016 and 2017, caused by record-breaking temperatures.
Warm ocean temperatures are the main driver of coral bleaching, when coral turns white as a stress response to water that is too warm. Bleaching doesn't kill coral immediately, but if temperatures remain high, eventually the coral will die, destroying a natural habitat for many species of marine life.
The new study found the serious worsening of coral colonies in the Northern and Central Great Barrier Reef following the mass bleaching events in the past five years, and experts said the southern part of the reef also suffered record-breaking temperatures in early 2020.
“We used to think the Great Barrier Reef is protected by its huge size — but our results show that even the world's largest and relatively well-protected reef system is increasingly dropping, Hughes said. He warned that climate change is driving an increase in the frequency of the reef disturbance like marine heat waves. "There is no time to lose — we must sharply reduce greenhouse gases as soon as possible," he said.
    12. What can we know about coral reefs?
    A. They are not able to recover by themselves.
    B. They make up the largest ecosystem in the sea.
    C. They can easily be disturbed by other marine species.
    D. They can influence the existence of other marine species.
    13. What does the underlined word “collapse" in Paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Change. B. Disappear.
    C. Crash. D. Progress.
    14. How does coral respond to high temperatures?
    A. It will die very soon. B. It will change its color.
    C. It will fail to reproduce. D. It will kill other species.
    15. What does Terry Hughes want to say in the last paragraph?
    A. The Great Barrier Reef doesn't have a self-protecting mechanism.
    B. The Great Barrier Reef is no longer the world's largest coral reef.
    C. Measures must be taken to protect coral reefs without delay.
    D. Climate change can increase the frequency of heat waves.

You’ve probably started to hear this word being thrown around lately. If you’re feeling lost, you’re in the right place. Here, we’ll try to answer some big questions from Microsoft’s point of view. What is a metaverse? Does it already exist? ____16____ Let’s dig in.
Simply put, a metaverse is a digital space inhabited by digital representations of people, places and things. Think of it like a new version, or maybe a new vision, of the Internet. ____17____ Now we can actually go into that place to communicate, share, and work with others. It’s an Internet that you can actually interact with — like we do in the physical world.
And it’s not just a vision anymore. Right now, you can go to a concert and experience a show with other real people inside a video game. ____18____ Those are metaverses. And the future is already here!
____19____ “But my digital self is not my physical self.” Well that is technically true. But Microsoft is working to help you better represent your whole self in the digital space while also ensuring that you can bring your humanity and your agency over with that representation.
If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that we need flexibility. The world has never been more connected, but lately, we’ve often needed to distance ourselves physically. The closer we can reflect our physical selves in the digital world, the more of these barriers we can break down. Teammates can join meetings from anywhere. Real-time translation allows people from diverse cultures to collaborate in real-time. ____20____ The metaverse has the ability to take us beyond the barriers and limitations of the physical world.
    A. And are you already in it?
    B. Have you been lost in a metaverse?
    C. However, there’s some doubt about them.
    D. Many people talk about the Internet as a place.
    E. You can walk a factory floor from your own home.
    F. There are good reasons to take the metaverse seriously.
    G. This is what takes this from a cool idea to a critical one.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favorite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together quickly and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced round the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished, but as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
    注意:
    1. 续写的词数应为150左右;

C Kids’ creative thinking ability is easy to discover and develop.
    D. Teachers are supposed to make the most of the kids’ flexibility.
    7. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Kids' Social Abilities Are Consistent with. Their Education

Speak up, we can’t see you
A 9. C 10. C 11. D

由第二段“Now scientists have revealed why we tend to end up raising our voices at our workmates: as video quality falls, we speak louder and vary our gestures (手势) in an attempt to make up. (现在,科学家们已经揭示了为什么我们最终会对同事提高嗓门:随着视频质量的下降,我们会大声说话,并改变手势以试图弥补)”可知,我们会在视频通话中提高声音,是因为视频质量差。故选A项。
由第三段中的“The gestures we make while talking, as well as other visual signals, are truly important and integrated aspects of how we communicate (我们在说话时所做的手势以及其他视觉信号,是我们沟通方式中真正重要和综合的方面)”可知,综合因素有助于有效沟通。
由第二段中的“as video quality falls, we speak louder and vary our gestures (手势) in an attempt to make up (随着视频质量的下降,我们会大声说话,并改变手势以试图弥补)”和第五段中的“However, when gestures were used, volume increased by up to five decibels (分贝) as video quality deteriorated, and then remained at this higher level as video quality decreased further—in other words, when gestures ceased to be useful at all.
由第二段“Now scientists have revealed why we tend to end up raising our voices at our workmates: as video quality falls, we speak louder and vary our gestures (手势) in an attempt to make up. (现在,科学家们已经揭示了为什么我们最终会对同事提高嗓门:随着视频质量的下降,我们会大声说话,并改变手势以试图弥补)”和最后一段““They know that the gestures being produce are vital to their communication, but their partner is going to have a harder time seeing them. So they increase the strength of the other signal—speech.” he said. (“他们知道所做的手势对他们的交流至关重要,但他们的同伴很难看到这些手势。因此,他们增加了另一种信号的强度——语言。”他说)”可知,本文讲述了,因为人们在视频通话中看不到对方的手势,所以随着视频质量的下降,我们会更大声地说话,D项“大声点,我们看不到你”符合文意。故选D项。
Population falls occurred in both shallow and deep water coral species, experts found, but branching coral and table-shaped coral — which provide habitats for fish — were worst affected by mass bleaching (白化)events in 2016 and 2017, caused by record-breaking temperatures.
D 13. C 14. B 15. C
根据第一段第一句“Between a quarter and one third of all marine species rely on coral reefs (珊瑚礁)at some point in their life cycle.”(四分之一到三分之一的海洋物种在它们生命周期的某个时刻依赖于珊瑚礁。)和第二句“The Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef, covers nearly 133,000 square miles and is home to more than 1,500 species of fish, 411 species of hard coral and dozens of other species.”(大堡礁是世界上最大的珊瑚礁,占地近13.3万平方英里,是1500多种鱼类、411种硬珊瑚和数十种其他物种的家园。)
根据第五段第一句中的“Reefs are basic to the health of marine ecosystems”(珊瑚礁是海洋生态系统健康的基础)和“marine life dies”(海洋生物死亡)可知,此处是指没有珊瑚礁,生态系统坍塌,海洋生物死亡。
根据第七段第一句“Warm ocean temperatures are the main driver of coral bleaching, when coral turns white as a stress response to water that is too warm.”(温暖海洋温度是珊瑚白化的主要原因,当海水太热时,珊瑚会变成白色。)
根据最后一段倒第二句“He warned that climate change is driving an increase in the frequency of the reef disturbance like marine heat waves.”(他警告说,气候变化正导致海洋热浪等珊瑚礁扰动频率的增加。)和最后一句“There is no time to lose — we must sharply reduce greenhouse gases as soon as possible”(不能再浪费时间了,我们必须尽快大幅减少温室气体排放)可知,Terry Hughes在最后一段想说的是必须立即采取措施保护珊瑚礁。

But Microsoft is working to help you better represent your whole self in the digital space, while also ensuring that you can bring your humanity and your agency over with that representation.
    【答案】16 A 17. D 18. E 19. C 20. G
根据前文“ Here, we’ll try to answer some big questions from Microsoft’s point of view. What is a metaverse? Does it already exist? ”(在这里,我们将试着从微软的角度来回答一些大问题。什么是元宇宙?它已经存在了吗?)以及空后的“Let’s dig in.”(让我们深入研究吧。)可知,空处应该与前文并列的是疑问句的结构,同时探讨的是“元宇宙是否已经存在?”,才能引起下文“让我们深入研究。”A选项“And are you already in it?”(你已经在里面了吗?) 故选A。
根据空前的“Think of it like a new version, or maybe a new vision, of the Internet.”(把它想象成互联网的一个新版本,或者一个新愿景。),以及空后的“Now we can actually go into that place to communicate, share, and work with others. ”(现在我们可以进入那个地方去交流,分享,和其他人一起工作。)可知,设空处应该是将互联网比作一个地方。D选项“Many people talk about the Internet as a place.”(许多人把互联网看作一个地方。)
根据下文的“ Those are metaverses.”(这些是元宇宙),以及前文的“Right now, you can go to a concert and experience a show with other real people inside a video game. ”(现在,你可以在电子游戏中与其他真人一起去听音乐会,体验一场表演。)可知,此处列举的是现实中元宇宙的例子。E选项“You can walk a factory floor from your own home.”(你可以从家里走到工厂的地板上。)
根据下文的“But my digital self is not my physical self.”(但我的数字自我不是我的真实的自我。) C选项“However, there’s some doubt about them.”(然而,对它们也有一些疑问。)
根据前文的“The world has never been more connected, but lately, we’ve often needed to distance ourselves physically. The closer we can reflect our physical selves in the digital world, the more of these barriers we can break down.”(世界之间的联系从未如此紧密,但最近,我们经常需要保持身体上的距离。 G选项“This is what takes this from a cool idea to a critical one.”(这就是它从一个很酷的想法变成一个关键的想法的原因。)中的this指代的就是前文的“lately, we’ve often needed to distance ourselves physically”(最近,我们经常需要保持身体上的距离)这种情况,G选项解释了元宇宙概念在当前疫情下重要的原因。故选G。

    注意:
    1. 续写的词数应为150左右;

    【答案】参考范文
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat !” Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben’s face became red, lowered his head and said a thank-you in a low voice. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand. “This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase.” She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possessions. At these remarks, Ben felt much ashamed, and had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward himself more chocolates for any other merits he had displayed in this event.
Now with some chocolates in hand, a sense of guilt welled up inside the boy. After what seemed a long time, he looked up at his mother and admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally. He then asked for punishment. “I’m sorry I lied to you, mum. Please take back the chocolate.” Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn’t hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolates. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolate in his hand, smiling. “Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear.”
    ①珍惜:cherish/treasure
    ②鼓励:encourage/inspire
    ③归还:return /give back
