One September night a family had gathered round their fireplace. Up the chimney roared the fire and brightened the room with its broad flames. The faces of the father and mother had a sober gladness; the children laughed; and the aged grandmother sat knitting in the warmest place. This family of mountaineers was situated in the Notch of the White Hills, where the wind was sharp throughout the year, and pitilessly cold in the winter. Not just that, but a mountain towered above their heads, so steep, that the stones would often roll down its sides and wake the whole house at midnight.
Though they lived in such a remote place, these people held daily conversation with the world. Some travelers, would pause here and pay only for food and accommodation, but meet with a homely kindness beyond all price. When the footsteps were heard, therefore, between the outer door and the inner one, the whole family rose up, grandmother, children, and all, as if about to welcome someone who belonged to them, and whose fate was linked with theirs.
The door was opened by a young man. His face at first wore the sad expression, almost hopelessness, but soon brightened up when he saw the kindly warmth of his reception. He felt his heart spring forward to meet them all, from the old woman, who wiped a chair with her apron, to the little child that held out its arms to him.
“Ah, this fire is the right thing!” cried he, “The biting wind almost froze me. But when I saw this good fire, and all your cheerful faces, I felt as if you were waiting for my arrival. So I shall sit down, and make myself at home.”
After supper, the young man talked freely, feeling himself a member of the family. He was of a proud, yet lonely spirit, so trusting others was not easy for him. However, that night, the educated youth poured out his heart before the simple mountaineers.
    24. What can we learn about the family from the passage?
    A. They charged travelers lot for food. B. They were poor but hardworking.
    C. They lived in a cold and dangerous spot. D. They remained cut off from the world.
    25. What might be the young man’s purpose to drop by the family?
    A. To talk to the family. B. To seek shelter from cold.
    C. To keep company with the family. D. To know about the mountain.
    26. What was the main reason why the young man felt at ease?
    A. The welcoming fire. B. The comfortable chair.
    C. The delicious supper. D. The warmth of ‘the family.
    27. What would be probably the content of the paragraph that follows?
    A. The mountain’s condition. B. The family’s life.
    C. Mountaineers’ characters. D. The young man’s story.
    C
Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things.
However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. A personal visit carries with it the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off.
With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialisation today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handicrafts (手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.
Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analysing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.
It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.
    28. According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are willing to ______.
    A. live a better life B. look for better methods
    C. accept technology and advance steadily D. change ways of living
    29. What does the underlined word “gadgets” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Tools. B. Messages. C. Barriers. D. Skil1s.
    30. How does the author explains “efficiency comes with a price”?
    A. By describing a process. B. By making classification.
    C. By following time order. D. By using examples.
    31. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
    A. Progress can suit the needs of daily life.
    B. People review the past with great regret.
    C. People’s attitude decides the use of technology.
    D. Technology should be introduced in a fixed way.

Plants: we eat them, juice them-and now it seems we can mine them too!
After a successful experiment on the island of Borneo, the botany professor Alan Baker and a group of researchers want to introduce phytomining (harvesting minerals from plants) as a better, partial substitute for traditional mining.
Phytomining, also known as agromining, means collecting metals from live plants. However, this can only be done with a group of plants known as “hyperaccumulators”. There are around 700 identified types worldwide, and what makes these hyperaccumulators special is that they naturally attract and absorb minerals through their roots-metals poisonous to other plants-and then store huge, pure concentrations of these minerals in their bodies. The metals can then be extracted from the plants’ sap (汁;液), oil, or sometimes even live tissue.
Baker and his colleagues see a lot of potential in phytomining. Not only can it help meet the growing global demand for metals, but is a way of undoing some of that damage to the environment by traditional mining.
One of the biggest problems with traditional mining is that it pollutes the surrounding area. Phytomining can extract metal waste, plus planting the hyperaccumulators would regrow the deforested areas caused by mining operations. Aside from this, if phytomining is able to replace part of traditional mining, then there would be fewer instances of bad mining practices like abandoned mines, which pollute the nearby waters. Also, since phytomining provides metals that are already naturally pure, there is no need to use huge amounts of energy to purify the ore (矿石).
Phytomining has its drawbacks. Harvesting plants on a large scale is expensive today, compared to traditional mining. Besides, plants can be wiped out by diseases or unexpected weather conditions.
However, there are many reasons to consider phytomining. After all, we need to make sure that our planet can keep up and sustainable practices like phytomining give us the hope that our advancement doesn’t mean sacrificing Mother Earth.
    32. What makes hyperaccumulators different from other plants?
    A. The sap poisonous to other plants. B. The ability to take in and store minerals.
    C. The oil extracted from live plant tissue. D. The concentrations of minerals in their bodies.
    33. What is the advantage of phytomining?
    A. It can stop deforestation. B. It may reduce the desertedmines.
    C. It uses clean energy to purify the ore. D. It can’t be destroyed by diseases.
    34. What is the author’s attitude toward phytomining?
    A. Pessimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Optimistic. D. Skeptical.
    35. What can be the best title for the text?
    A. Metals From Plants. B. The Future of Phytomining.
    C. What Are Hyperaccumulators? D. Benefits of Phytomining.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My crippled (瘸腿) grandmother was dancing. I stood in the living room doorway, absolutely shocked. I heard her sing when I opened the door but did not want to interrupt her by shouting I had arrived. She was wearing beautiful dancing shoes and her legs obeyed her perfectly. As long as I could remember, she was once the pet of the dancing world. But it was all over after a sudden accident. She had always limped (一瘸一拐地走), helped with a cane (拐杖).
She turned around and saw me standing in the doorway. Her song ended, and her beautiful movements with it. Grandma turned towards the kitchen. She was walking with no difficulties in her beautiful shoes. I followed her, not believing my eyes.
“So…” I asked surprisedly but happily, “How did your leg heal (康复)?”
“To tell you the truth-my, legs have been wel1 all my life” she said.
“But I don’t understand!” I said, “I mean… You pretended all these years?”
“Very much so,” Grandmother closed her eyes, “And for a very good reason.”
    “What reason?”
    “Your grandfather.”
“You mean he told you not to dance?”
“No, this was my choice. I am sure I would have lost him if I had continued dancing. I weighed fame (名声) and love against each other and love won.”
“We were talking about engagement (订婚) when your grandfather had to go to war. It was the most terrible day of my life when he left. I was so afraid of losing him, the only way I could stay peaceful was to dance. And then one day a letter came. There were only three sentences: ‘I have lost my leg. I am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. It is best you forget about me.’”
Grandma continued to tell me that Grandfather was in hospital and she made her decision not to give him up. She took her leave, and traveled away from the city.
    Several weeks later, she returned.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________
She took a deep breath, leaned on her cane and limped to Grandfather.

    One possible version:
    A Cross-Country Running Race
Last Sunday witnessed an extraordinary cross-country running race, which nearly drew the attention of every student and teacher of our school.
The students selected from every class took part in the competition. The route measured five kilometers, from our school gate to the foot of Nanshan Mountain. Every runner tried their best to finish the task, with their classmates along the way giving them necessary help as well as encouragement. At last, all the runners managed to arrive the finish line, receiving cheers from all the directions.
The activity was highly spoken of, because not only did it provide chance for us to exercise, but also made us more cohesive.
    第二节(25 分)
    One possible version:
Several weeks later, she returned. She had bought herself a cane and wrapped her leg tightly with bandages. She told everyone she had been in a car crash and that her leg would never completely heal again. Her dancing days were over. No one suspected the story-She had learned to limp convincingly before she returned home. Then she traveled to the hospital. She saw my grandfather seated in his wheelchair with a cane on the ground nearby.
She took a deep breath, leaned on her cane and limped to Grandfather. She told him she had an accident and a leg was injured seriously. She showed him two engagement rings she had bought the day after he left for the war. “I was not going to waste them on any other man.” Grandma said to him. Then Grandfather bent to take his cane from the ground but Grandma was not going to help. And so he managed it on his own and never sat in a wheelchair again in his life.

    W: Yeah…
M: You’ve got it so easy!
7.【原文】M: Hi, Jenny. Are you going to school now? W: Yup. I have English at 9:00 in the morning.
M: We will have our midterm exams next month. I plan to look for some important books in the library. Do you want to join me?
W: Sure. I need to return some books.
M: Great. We can go to the swimming pool in the gym after that.
W: That sounds like a good idea. We can chill out a little in such a hot summer.
    8.【原文】W: Oh, you look ill.
    M: I don’t feel too good. I must admit.
W: Then you shouldn’t go to school today.
M: Oh, I have to. I can’t stay at home today-we’ve got to hand in our geography projects. It’s the last chance. And it’s just a cold. You always feel worse when you first get up. I’ll be fine once I’ve had a wash and a bit of breakfast.
W: It won’t hurt to miss a day. You look very pale, and there’s a flu virus going round at the moment. Ella next door has got flu.
M: I haven’t got the flu, mom. And Mr. Bell will think that I’m absent because today’s the deadline for the project and I haven’t finished it.
W: Don’t be silly-you’re one of his star pupils. Surely, he’s not going to fail you because you are ill. You haven’t even missed a day all year as far as I remember.
M: Oh well, I suppose you’re right. Perhaps I will stay at home, just today. But could you do me a favor? Drive round to school and deliver my project to Mr. Bell.
W: It’s quite unnecessary. I will call Mr. Bell right now.
    9. 【原文】M: I have such a busy day today. I don’t know when I’ll be home. Can you pick up our son from school today?
W: Oh, you have to speak at the High School of Science and Technology today?
M: That’ll be finished by 3 o’clock. But then I have to go to the office and prepare my notes for my speech at the Computer Society’s annual dinner tonight.
W: Well, at least your magazine article has already been written and given to your editor. It was due today, wasn’t it?
M: Yes, at least that’s done. In fact, it should be published sometime next month.
W: Do you think you’ll be given time to eat tonight or will you have to spend the entire evening answering questions?
M: I might be asked to speak as soon as everyone sits down for dinner. In that case, I guess I’ll be pretty hungry when I get home.
W: Do you have any idea what time you’ll be finished?
    M: No.
W: Well, I’ll have something ready for you to eat. Can you catch the last bus? Or maybe you should take a taxi.
M: Don’t worry, dear. That’s already been taken care of. The Computer Society is sending a car for me. It’s picking me up at the office at six and will bring me home after the meeting.
    10. 【原文】M: Pedal Power is a small charity based mainly in the UK. At Pedal Power, they collect second-hand bikes in the UK and send them to some of the poorest regions in the world. When they distribute bikes overseas, they don’t give them away for free. In order to continue operating they need to have a constant supply of bikes which they send out every six months. In August 2000, they simply ran out of money. It was a terrible situation. Fortunately, in October 2001 they won an Enterprise Award which helped them enormously. Dan Pearman is the founder of Pedal Power. He got the idea of exporting bicycles to developing countries while he was in Ecuador. Dan Pearman went there in 1993 and he joined a voluntary organization. Where Dan Pearman lived in Ecuador was a rural area. His neighbor had the only bicycle in the village, whereas everyone else walked everywhere. His neighbor’s business was very successful. For years Dan Pearman couldn’t understand why. Then he realized having a bike meant his neighbor could reach anywhere he liked without much trouble. Other local carpenters could only accept jobs nearby, so no matter how skilled they were, they could never do as many jobs as his neighbor. When he returned to the UK in 1998, he started planning Pedal Power.
