(2022春·上海浦东新·八年级校考期中)Lost Underground is a story about school children who went on a trip to some caves. These caves were very large and people could go into them only with a guide. However, four children decided to explore on their own. They went in the caves with a group, but left the group and walked down a tunnel. They thought it would be fun to explore the caves alone.
Soon they came to a hole in the wall. They climbed through the hole into another part of the cave. Then they decided to turn back, but they could not remember the way. They were lost in the caves. When the guide led the other children out of the caves, he counted them. He discovered that there were four children missing. He had to go back into the caves to try to find the missing children.
The children who were lost moved deeper and deeper into the caves. The deeper they went, the more lost they became. They were frightened. They started shouting for help, but the guide didn’t hear them. How dangerous they were!
Soon they came to an underground river. They guessed that the river must flow out of the caves. The water was very cold and deep, but the children kept on swimming. While the idea behind cloning (克隆) your dead pet sounds like something out of a sci-fi (科幻) novel, the technology is not actually all that new. Briefly speaking, cloning is to make a copy of any living things or a cell (细胞). It is always a hot topic of discussion among scientists and even ordinary people.
You must have heard of the famous sheep, Dolly. It was the first successful man-made cloning animal in 1984. But long before that, in 1958, F.C.Steward grew whole carrot plants from carrot root cells, which encouraged the idea that cloning from animals’ cells may be possible. After more than twenty years, in 2005, the first cloned (克隆) dog—Snuppy was born. It was a pet dog. And scientists were able to re-clone him and create four more “Snuppy” in 2017. While one of them died, the other three were all healthy.
Many people still share concerns about (担忧) cloning animals. They believe that cloning could cause health problems. The cloning company claims that cloned animals have even fewer chances to meet health problems than non-cloned animals. The cloning company hopes that the process will become more common and acceptable.
For pet owner, cloning their dead pets can deal with their sadness. But the cloning process is by no means a quick fix. “It is not a rebirth,” Rodriguez, the manager of a cloning company said. “It’s the memory of that original animal and I think that’s what our clients are hoping to get. I don’t think they want to replace that animal. They’re just looking to get a part of that animal back.”
However, not all people support the idea of cloning. They believe that if cloning is used for bad purpose, it surely will create great problems that we cannot imagine and lead to the destruction of humankind.
7.The first cloning animal came to the world ________.
A.in 1958 B.in 1984 C.in 2005 D.in 2017

A.Cloning animals have more health problems.
B.More and more people will accept the idea of cloning.
C.Cloning animals is not acceptable in society now.
D.Few people support the idea of cloning.
10.Customers hope to get ________ through cloning their beloved pets.
A.the original animals B.the copies of their pets
C.the memory of their pets D.a new pet

(2022春·上海·八年级统考期中)A day at the shops can help you live longer, and surprisingly, the benefits are actually greater for men, says a study group from Taiwan. The study even suggests that shopping regularly is better than going to the gym. Seeing friends and just people-watching can stave off loneliness and improve psychological health, suggests the study. It looked at almost 1850 people aged 65 and over living alone at home in Taiwan, who were asked how often they went shopping. They found those who shopped daily lived longer than those who shopped less, with thinking of people’s physical or other health problems. By comparing with those who didn’t often go out to the shops had the best life record, with a 28% cut in their chances of dying, while older women saw a bit fewer benefits with a 23% cut in dying. The researchers said, “An elder who shops less for food would be at risk of poorer diet to keep healthy. This makes a bad cycle. Shopping less causes poor health and poor health causes less shopping. ” But the study added, “In shopping situations, communicating with, or watching others can provide social and mental benefits. ” “Compared with other types of spare-time physical activity, like exercise, which usually needs motivation and sometimes professional instruction, shopping is easier to keep on.”

B.The study interviewed almost 1850 people aged 65 and over living with their families.

The truth about the world
The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but this is not the case for many people around the world. Did you know that around 750 million people do not have clean water to drink? That’s around 1 in 10 people in the world.

At one school, children between the ages of 10 and 15 walk 6 km with 6 litres of water, so they can see how it feels to walk along distance carrying heavy bottles of water. (2022春·上海静安·八年级校考期中)More than 50, 000, 000 people live in the rainforests of the world and most of them do not hurt the forest they live in. They eat the fruits that grow on the forest trees, but they do not cut them down. They kill some animals to eat, but they do not destroy them.
When we cut down the rainforests, we destroy these forest people, too. In 1900, there were 1, 000, 000 forest people in the Amazon forest. In 1980, there were only 200, 000.
The Yanomami live along the rivers of the rainforest in the north of Brazil. There were over 50 interactive shows. They taught us about the world of physics. The workers were excitedly explaining the shows while we watched them.

Nicolas Anelka arrived in Shanghai last month to begin playing for Shanghai Shenhua in the Chinese Super League (中超联赛). Anelka is French and played for France’s national team as well as for Chelsea (切尔西队) in England. He is the biggest and the latest of a growing number of foreign stars that have come to play professional sports in China.
At the beginning of this season, the Chinese Basketball Association had several NBA players in the league including Wilson Chandler and Kenyon Martin. These players came to China because of the NBA lockout (停摆,停赛) last September. They wanted to play basketball and they were able to get the same salary here as they would have in the NBA.However, most of them left China when the NBA season started again. The CSL and the CBA are happy to welcome these players and to pay them big salaries because both sports leagues have had trouble keeping their fan base. The CSL has lost many fans because of past match fixing scandals (打假球丑闻) and the CBA has suffered by comparison with the NBA — it’s just not as exciting.
China’s professional sports teams have a long way to go if they are going to match the quality of play seen in other countries. Bringing in top foreign athletes (运动员) is a way for Chinese athletes to learn and to improve. And it’s hoped that the big names will fill the seats in China’s stadiums and arenas (赛场).
More foreign athletes, such as Anelka, are also discovering that China is a great place to spend part of their careers. The money is good, but they also like the country and its culture. Anelka, for one, says he is “delighted (高兴的)” to be here. I think Shanghai is delighted to have him.
43.Nicolas Anelka has played for ________.
A.Shanghai Shenhua and Chelsea
B.Chelsea and France’s national team
C.Shanghai Shenhua and France’s national team
D.France’s national team, Chelsea and Shanghai Shenhua
44.Wilson and Kenyon Martin came to China ________.
A.when the NBA season started again B.last month
C.at the beginning of this season D.last September
45.The possible reason why NBA players left China is that ________.
A.the CBA is not very happy to welcome the players
B.the CBA refuses to pay the players the same salary as they’ve expected
C.the CBA isn’t as exciting as the NBA
D.the players have lost their interest in playing basketball
46.The underlined part can be replaced (替代) by ________.
A.foreign stars B.great people
C.those who are rich enough D.famous foreign athletes
47.Which of the following sentences is true according to the passage?
A.China’s professional sports teams should try hard to make improvements.
B.Nicolas Anelka is the biggest and the last foreign star who has come to China to play professional sports.
C.Nicolas Anelka is delighted to spend the rest of his career in Shanghai.
D.Past match fixing scandals have made the CBA lose many fans.
48.What is the best title for the passage?

Hello and welcome to my blog!
My name is Naomi. I am 16 years old. For the past two months, I have been living in Southampton, England, as an exchange student.
I arrived in Southampton on July 13. It felt unreal to think about living in a new country and in a new family for one year. On my first day, my host mum Tracy showed me around the neighborhood, and we drove down to the sea. The weather was great, and everything looked beautiful.
My school started the week after. I had chosen my subjects before. I had to do English and Math, and I chose History, Geography and Film Studies. The Itchen Sixth Form College is a big school with about 2,000 students who are between the ages of 16 and 19. My school day starts at 8:40 and ends at 15:30. During the week, I don’t do that much with my free time. Sometimes, I stay in school a little longer to talk with my friends, and then I go home and do my homework.
Due to COVID-19, students take only two classes per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In this way, we don’t have to change rooms very often and won’t need to walk too close to one another in the narrow hallways. All the teachers are really nice and supportive.
The school used to organize trips to London or Winchester for its exchange students. However, because of COVID-19, everything is canceled right now. That’s why we have planned some day trips ourselves! A few weeks ago, I went with some of my friends to Portsmouth, a seaside city about an hour’s drive from Southampton. We visited the Spinnaker Tower and saw the city from above. The view was magnificent.
So, this has been my first two months in England. I hope you enjoyed reading my first entry. I am looking forward to telling you about all of the experiences I have over the coming months.

(2022春·上海黄浦·八年级统考期中)The water tap was leaking (漏水) again, and the noise was driving Cassie crazy.
Cassie looked at her watch. It was nearly nine o’clock. She climbed out of bed and stood on a chair by the shelf. Her mother’s Mr. Fix-It Book was on the top shelf. She found the page she was looking for and then began to read carefully.
Next, Cassie opened a box in the kitchen and picked out the tools she needed—a hammer, a wrench (扳手), and several small things. It was not easy for her to repair the tap, and she tried several times. Finally, the water tap was in pieces. One by one, she carefully laid them out on the table. That way she would know how they went back.
Cassie worked late into the night. At one point, she thought she was done. Oops! A small piece that she had forgotten still lay on the table. Slowly Cassie took the water tap apart (分开) one more time. This time she made sure everything was in place. She turned the water tap on and then off. One... two... three... She waited a full minute. There was no leak! Cassie smiled and put the tools back into the box. Then she went to bed and fell asleep.
The next morning, Dad was in the kitchen when Cassie got up.
“Notice anything, Dad?” she asked.

(2021春·上海·八年级校联考期中)How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada’ national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem in the twenty-first century.
As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example of this is the work of Dr Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test. During the test, their heart rates were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-virtual-reality room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people’s in the other group.
The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. Another good example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31, 000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people’s everyday life. In Dubai, for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. School children study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside. And South Korea is another good example: it has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it’s now time to start rebuilding nature.

(2021春·上海奉贤·八年级校联考期中)After all these experiences, I learned a lot and began to grow up. One autumn night, when my parents and I returned from my uncle’s house, my mother said that we might leave for Australia soon. I was crying on the bus, and some people were turning around to look at me. I could not stop the thought of never hearing the morning radio programmes in school again.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving, I couldn’t wait to think about all the places I was going to see the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving was hardly in my head then.
The following years taught me to think all was going to turn out well, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years, I had to study in three schools because of my family moves. I did not know very clearly what I was or what I should be. Father died and Mother then married again. And things became even more complex (复杂). More than two years passed, my stepfather and I got used to each other at last. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”
My responsibilities in the family increased since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, taught my mother to fill out forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers(移民局官员), took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there...
I have learned that all common troubles go away at last if we don’t give up. My life will turn out all right, even though it will be so hard.

Why do people travel? “To see more of the world,” many people would say. But travelling abroad now means much more than that for the growing number of Chinese tourists. Of course it offers us good opportunities to meet people from other countries, learn about their culture and customs.
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Chinese people usually join large tourist groups and visit several countries in one trip. Japan, Thailand and Russia are the most popular countries while Hong Kong is losing its shine in Chinese eyes.
Chinese people don’t just travel for sightseeing. The China International Travel Service Company said that all their tour trips sold out a month before Christmas Day. Stores offered discounts (打折) during that time, so shopping in Europe and the United States is popular among Chinese travellers.
In December, China is going through a very cold winter. So many people like to go to some countries in Southeast Asia because the weather there is quite pleasant. The improvement of living standards means more Chinese can travel abroad. But some of them don’t have a sense of public manners. A report by Living Social website in March even listed Chinese as the world’s second worst tourists.
If you want to change that bad name, remember to avoid the following: littering, spitting, snatching bus seats, line-jumping, talking loudly and smoking in non-smoking areas. Besides, we should learn some necessary manners of foreign countries.
