一、阅读理解
Since early May 2022, cases of monkeypox (猴痘) have been reported from countries where the disease is not endemic(地方性流行的),and continue to be reported in several endemic countries. Most confirmed cases with travel history reported travel to countries in Europe and North America, rather than West or Central Africa where the monkeypox virus is endemic. This is the first time that many monkeypox cases and clusters have been reported concurrently in non-endemic and endemic countries in widely disparate geographical areas. Click here for more information.
WHO is collaborating with health authorities to prevent further spread of the disease. We are issuing guidance to help countries on surveillance, laboratory work, clinical care, infection prevention and control, as well as risk communication and community engagement to inform communities at risk and the broader general public about monkeypox and how to keep safe.
You can catch monkeypox through close contact with someone who has symptoms. Close contact includes skin-to-skin; face-to-face; mouth-to-skin and mouth-to-mouth. You can also catch monkeypox from contaminated bedding, towels, surfaces or objects.

As introduction to backpacking go, this might be pushing it. At noon on a brilliant Tuesday in March, my 12-year-old son Kai and I are a mile and a half into a four-day, 27-mile walk through the Grand Canyon(峡谷)一his first backpacking trip—when he asks, “Are we almost to camp?” Um, no. Camp, at Hermit Creek, is seven miles and nearly 2,500 feet below. That will take us several more hours.
We are here largely because of a birthday note Kai wrote to me two years ago in which he declared, “You used to be a wild 10-year-old like me and now you’re a wild 53-year-old. We can do so many things together! I am excited for when I’m old enough for the Grand Canyon.”
There are, I suppose, dads who could resist that, just as there are fathers who would plan an experience-appropriate trip for their sons. I am neither, so here we are. Never mind that; aside from simply being 12, Kai has done almost nothing to physically prepare for this. Or that I haven’t backpacked for 13 years.
We go down a poorly maintained path off the canyon with twisty trees and twining bushes. Gradually the view broadens, the landscape in Vishnu fascinates Kai greatly. “This place is amazing,” he says. Nightfall in the canyon can be magical. Darkness surrounds us, pressed by cool air. Hearing the sound of a waterfall, we lie down to take in the stars. Twice I suggest we turn in. “Not yet,” Kai says. “This is too unbelievable.”
Wednesday, we travel three miles to Monument Creek, and hike a mile and 1,000 feet down to the Colorado River. The next morning at 7 : 30 when we march out, I’m optimistic, and Kai sets a quick pace. Friday, we rise before dawn and are the first ones out of camp; for an hour we have the Bright Angel Trail and its soaring (高耸的) scenery to ourselves.
In that birthday card Kai had also written, M Even when you’re 100, you will always be wild. “Nice. If I’m lucky enough to make it there, it looks like I’ll have company.

D.He tends to make sufficient preparations for backpacking in advance.
6、How does Kai probably feel during the trip?
A.Exhausted. B. Excited. C. Relieved. D. Desperate.
7、What does the last paragraph imply?
A.Kai hopes his dad will live a long life.
B.Kai believes his dad will be wilder in the future.
C.The author enjoys Kai’s company during the trip.
D.The author doubts whether he can live as old as 100.
If you’re reaching for the last piece of pizza at a party f and meanwhile see another hand going for it, your next move probably depends on how you feel and whom the hand belongs to. Your little sister you might just grab the pizza. Your boss一you probably will give up.
Now researchers have made progress in understanding how mammals’ brain encodes social rank and uses this information to shape behaviors—such as whether to fight for the last pizza slice. They discovered that an area of the brain called the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) was responsible for representing social rank in mammals; changes to a mouse’s mPFC affected its dominance behavior (支配行为). But it was unknown how the mPFC represented this information and which neurons(神经元) were involved in changing dominance behaviour.
In the new study, Professor Kay Tye let groups of four mice share a cage. Some mice became more dominant(占优势的) and others more subordinate. As soon as the mice were paired up, he discovered, the activity of their mPFC neurons could predict--with 90 percent certainty—the rank of their opponent.
“We expected animals might only signal rank when they are in a competition,” says co-researcher Nancy. But it turns out animals walk around with this representation of social rank all the time.
When the researchers next asked whether the activity of the mPFC neurons was associated with behaviour, they found something surprising. The brain activity patterns were linked with slight changes in behaviour, such as how fast a mouse moved, and they also could predict—a full 30 seconds before the competition started—which mouse would win the food reward.
The winner was not always the more dominant, but the one engaged in a winning mindset(心态). Just as you might sometimes be in a more competitive mood and be more likely to snatch that pizza slice before your boss, a subordinate mouse might be in a more winning mindset than a more dominant mouse and end up winning.
The areas of the mPFC associated with social rank and winning mindset are next to one another and highly connected. Signals on social rank impact the state of the brain involved in winning mindset. In other words, a subordinate mouse’s confidence and winning mindset may partially decrease when faced with a dominant one.
"This is further evidence to suggest that we are in different brain states when we are with others compared to when we’re alone," says Tye.
8、What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To provide background information.
B.To introduce the topic of this passage.
C.To give readers an example of social rank.
D.To state the importance of social rank.
9、What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The mPFC neurons. B. The researchers.
C. The brain activity patterns. D. The changes in behaviour.
10、What can we learn from the new study?
A.Brain activities can influence social rank.
B.Dominant opponents increase winning mindset.
C.Animals only exhibit their rank in competition.
D.Social rank and winning mindset affect behaviour.
11、What can we infer from the passage?
A.Winning mindset establishes dominance.
B.Social rank guides competitive behaviour.
C.A subordinate mouse can never been a winner.
D.Different people around you make your brain use different neurons.
Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, and more Disney characters all have something in common—gloves. Although there are many surprising facts about Disney’s characters, putting gloves on them is actually a reasonable move.
The short answer as to why so many characters wear gloves is that animation (动画制作) is a difficult process. It takes time and efforts to create the characters you know and love. Animators wanted to make their job easier and faster with a few techniques. One of these techniques was using round edges instead of angles. So this also meant making some parts simple, such as hands, to make the animation process quicker.
Still, in the age of black-and-white cartoons, separating characters’ round-edged hands from their black bodies was hard. Gloves were an easy way to make their hands stand out. In fact, Walt Disney might have been the first to put gloves on his characters. Once animation moved away from black and white, Mickey and his friends kept their white gloves.
Besides keeping the animation simple, Walt Disney told his biographer, Bob Thomas, that the gloves existed for another reason: to make the mouse more like a human. “We didn’t want him to have mouse hands because he was supposed to be more human” Disney told Thomas in 1957. “So we gave him gloves. Five fingers seemed like too much on such a little figure, so we took away one. That was just one less finger to animate.” All this Disney’s talk makes us want to go back and look at photos of Mickey Mouse.
12、Why were round edges used in animation?
A.They looked more beautiful.
B. They could be copied more easily.
C. They were more popular with children.
D. They could make the creating job easier.
13、What can we know about Mickey Mouse?
A.It is like a human with five fingers.
B.Its hands are different from humans’.
C.Gloves help it stand out among all characters.
D.It wore gloves in the past but it doesn’t nowadays.
14、What does the Disney’s talk make people do?
A. Enjoy Mickey’s beauty. B. Recall our childhood.
C. Count Mickey’s fingers. D. Check Mickey’s gloves’ color.
15、What does the text mainly talk about?
A. How Disney created his characters.
B. What difference Disney characters have.
C. What makes Disney characters so popular.
D. Why Disney characters wear white gloves.
