When Sugar arrived at the Exploits Valley SPCA in July, he had a disease related to breathing that required medication. Therefore, he needed to stay at the shelter a bit longer than other animals before he could be adopted (收养).
While Sugar recovered, he developed a close relationship with all of the shelter staff members and volunteers, and loved showing off what a sweet little cat he was. “He was extremely popular from the beginning,” Sarah, a worker of the Exploits Valley SPCA said.
One of the volunteers who Sugar saw a lot was Glen. Glen has been volunteering at the shelter for the past 30 years and really loved it. He was often arranged to clean the room where Sugar was staying, and every time Sugar saw Glen, he got so excited. “Sugar would shout loudly at Glen to make him stop doing his work,” Sarah said. Over the past 30 years, Glen had fallen in love with countless cats, but still managed to see them off to their forever homes. Something about Sugar was different, though. Chinese has overtaken French, Spanish and German to become one of the most promising foreign languages for job seekers in the UK. Research shows graduates in Chinese earn an average yearly salary of 31,000 pounds or more.
Chinese students set themselves up for a different university experience from others who take traditional subjects.While an English student may have as little as six hours of a week, those studying Chinese are in class for most of the day. “I had a lot of friends on other courses who didn't do much in first or second year. You can't play at Chinese. You have to spend hours and hours writing characters,”says Hannah, who graduated in Chinese Studies from SheffieldUniversity.“The first year was really difficult.Most of my friends admitted at one point to crying because of the pressure. I was almost told at one point that I might want to reconsider and drop out.”
So are the evenings in learning characters while your friends are at the student bar really worth it ? Despite the painful studying experience, most of the graduates think so. They use Chinese in their chosen careers, and would not have been in the jobs they do now without their knowledge of the language．
Liberty now works for the civil service in Beijing.. She earned a place on the Department for International Development graduate scheme with a salary of over 30,000 pounds within two years. “The degree was absolutely worth it．Looking around at people I know who have studied French or Spanish at university, there 's not such a chance to use it in the workplace.”
Hannah has set her apart in the workplace,but she warns ambitious students to think about whether they would really want to live in China in the future. “ Some people think they are going to learn Chinese and then be a big success ,but I think it 's important to be quite realistic about that.”

Few things are more satisfying than sleeping late on weekends. But though the extra sleep may improve your mood, it does not appear to improve your health. A new study shows that so-called “recovery sleep” cannot reset the body clock and may actually lead to some serious healthproblems.
Christopher Depner, an assistant professor at the Department of Integrative Physiology of the University of Colorado Boulder, said, “Sleep loss can influence a range of physiological systems. It can increase our risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, it can cause weight gain, and it can increase our risk of diabetes (糖尿病).”
In the study, Depner and his colleagues divided the volunteers into three groups. One group was allowed to get a full night’s sleep. The next was kept to just five hours each night. And the third group went back and forth, limited to five hours of shut-eye during the workweek, allowed as much sleep as they wanted over the weekend, and then back to five hours for the last couple of days.
“We found that a loss of sleep leads to a sharp increase in snacking. But even more surprising, sleeping on the weekend doesn’t help—and even makes thing worse” said Depener. “After the weekend, when they went back to getting inadequate sleep during the work or school week, their liver and muscle insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity or blood sugar regulation was reduced. And this is not something we found in people who had long-term inadequacy sleep schedules. So it’s possible that this is a worsening of the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar for these specific tissues after the weekend.”
