In an industrial area close to Egypt’s northern coast, colored lights and nine huge shining artworks made of factory waste materials by seven recycling artists brightened the night.
The artworks, mostly made of wastes of iron, plastic and wood, are on display at the first edition of the Alamein Art Festival. The festival being held at an industrial park owned by Industrial Development Group (IDG) in the Mediterranean resort city of New Alamein was organized by Art D’Egypte, an Egyptian platform for art and heritage.
“The one-month festival, which kicked off on Thursday, seeks to promote the concept of environmental sustainability (持续性) through art,” said Nadine Abdel-Ghaffar, founder of Art D’Egypte and chief organizer of the festival. “Through their eco-friendly art installations (装置), Egyptian contemporary artists call on people to be aware of protecting the environment and the climate.”
One of the artworks on display features two large leaves standing side by side inside two opposing metal frames, looking like two pages of an open book. “It sends a message to factories that the materials they regard as wastes can be used for good purposes by artists in creating artworks, which can make a place more beautiful, “said experienced Egyptian sculptor Omar Tossoun and explained how he created his sculpture A Leaf.
In the center of the open-air exhibition area, visitors’ attention is drawn to a colorful 6-meter-tallshining object that looks like a jellyfish. It took two months for Marwa Magdy to finish the artwork called Jellyfish, which took half a ton of wasted iron.
Visitors have been impressed by the concept of recycling waste materials into artworks. “If you look around, the artists have really done very nice works. It is such a brilliant idea to use something that otherwise would be discarded and make it into a beautiful piece of art,” said Yehia Hamad, one of the visitors.

Road-traffic noise greatly slows the development of memory and attention skills in primary school children, research has found.
The study of almost 2,700 children aged between 7 and 10 in 38 schools in Barcelona, Spain, is the first to assess the influence of traffic noise on child cognitive development over time and to determine the influence of peaks in noise.
The children in the study are in an important stage for the development of memory and attention skills, which are important to learning. The research found that children exposed to about three times more traffic in the street than other pupils had memory development that was 23% slower and attention ability development 5% slower over a year.
Noise is the second most damaging environmental factor to health, after air pollution. It was already known that noise would increase heart attacks and diabetes in adults. The UN said in February that city noise pollution was growing into a “global public health problem’’, leading to 12,000 early deaths a year in the EU alone, and influencing many cities from Bangkok to New York.
But research on the influence of road noise on children was limited until now. The scientists said many schools suffered noise pollution and that measures such as rerouting (改道) traffic away from schools could help cut noise and air pollution.
The research showed that peaks of noise heard inside the classroom, such as the passing of loud trucks or vehicles going faster away from traffic lights, had more influence than a higher average (平均的) level of noise. This may be because the peaks divert attention more, said Foraster.
Prof Iroise Dumontheil, at Birkbeck, University of London, UK, said, “This carefully designed study provides convincing evidence. Considering that many European children living in large cities are exposed to high road-traffic noise levels, this study has suggestions for public policy to cut road-traffic noise near schools.”

The frightening day of our diving test was here. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.

I am glad to learn that you would like to exercise to keep fit. I believe running is the best choice. My reasons are as follows.
First of all, the physical benefits from running have long been recognized as it helps increase the body’s flow of blood and oxygen, which thus strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of diseases. What’s more, running can certainly become a long-term hobby, since it takes only a pair of running shoes and can easily and flexibly be added to your schedule. Last but not least, running can improve one’s mood and particularly provide relief from pain or tension. Therefore, you can also achieve mental well-being if you take up running as a hobby. All in all, I’d like to recommend running as a sport that you can do regularly.
Why not give it a try? Just put on your trainers and get started. Then keep going. I’m sure you will get a lot out of running.
