Members f a native cmmunity in the arctic areas f Sweden say their reindeer (驯鹿) are facing pssible starvatin frm unusual weather related t climate change. The Sami indigenus cmmunity takes care f abut 8,000 reindeer thrughut the year. The animals are mved between traditinal feeding areas in high muntains brdering Nrway in the summer and frests farther east in the winter.
Cmmunity member Niila Inga is wrried abut his reindeer. He said climate change has affected the area’s weather activity and created fd shrtages. “If we dn’t find better areas fr them where they can graze and find fd, then the reindeer will starve t death,” Inga said. He demnstrated the prblem by reaching dwn int the snw and pulling up a hard piece f ice clse t the sil.
The area received unusual snwfall early in the fall, fllwed by rain that frze. Inga said this traps the plants that reindeer eat under a thick cver f ice. Sme f the hungry reindeer have nw mved away frm their traditinal migratin areas in search f fd.
Cmmunity members say half the reindeer mved twards the east as planned. But the rest headed back t the muntains, where they face the risk f attacks by ther animals r being caught in an avalanche. Older members f the Sami cmmunity say that in the past, they nly encuntered bad winters abut nce every ten years. But nw extreme and strange weather is getting mre and mre nrmal, happening several times a year.
Snwfall is nrmal fr the area. But as temperatures increase, rain can als fall, creating a “rain-n-snw” effect. When this happens, fd remains trapped underneath the ice where the reindeer cannt reach it. This causes the animals t grw weaker and struggle t make it thrugh the winter. Weather changes have hit the Sami cmmunity hard.
Sanna Vannar is president f the Swedish Sami Yuth rganizatin. The grup launched (发起) a legal actin in 2018 t frce the Eurpean Unin (EU) t set better targets fr reducing human-caused greenhuse gases.
