    2. When family finances have trouble, a marriage breaks, or disability strikes, one of the first places those problems show up is in the lawn(草坪). As much as we love them, the lawn ranks low in terms of priorities compared to buying food or medicine. When something has to give, what gives is a family's lawn. It gets knee high and contributes to a sense of hopelessness.
That's where Rodney Smith, Jr. steps in. While as a student at Alabama A&M, he stopped one hot summer day to help an elderly neighbor mow the lawn. His life hasn't been the same since. Several years since that day, he's mowed(除草) what seems like a countless number of lawns and not charged a penny for any of them. He's also discovered his life's calling. Smith Jr. went on to get a master's degree in social service work and founded an organization that inspires kids all over the country to help others with their lawn work.
His free lawn-cutting service is named Raising Men Lawn Care Service (RMLCS). The name reflects the fact that at its beginning, the service sought to inspire at-risk kids to take a path of public service. RMLCS will, free of charge, mow, clear leaves and shovel snow for the disabled, the elderly, and single mothers.
His efforts have brought attention from the national media and bloggers. He's also gone on a lawn-mowing tour and mowed in all 50 states to raise awareness of the need for young people to help others. The RMLCS website reports that 150 kids have joined its 50-lawn challenge, 53,000 people are supporting the effort, and 2,000 lawns have been mowed. The organization has also attracted the attention and support of a world's largest producer. It equipped Smith Jr. with one of its new mowers.
Smith Jr. remains undisturbed by the attention. He just sticks by the mission statement on his modest website: Making a difference one lawn at a time.
    1. According to paragraph 1, what does a lawn mean when it gets knee high?
A.Its owner may be very lazy.

A.To care for the lawns for the elderly.
B.To get kids involved in public service.
C.To raise help funds for the disabled.
D.To educate the public about gardening.
    3. What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A.Smith Jr.'s effort won wide support.
B.Smith Jr. earned a lot from his business.
C.Mowing the lawn is a challenge for the teenagers.
D.A world's largest producer offers much money to Smith Jr.

    3. During one of my gardenless years as a middle-aged adult, I was back in college. I had reasoned that old people shouldn't take on loans(贷款) for schooling. How would they live long enough and make enough money to pay them off? Educational loans are a young people's game, I decided.
So my practical, part-time college job was working as a school lunch lady at the local high school. When school fees and book charges were due, I knew I would still have at least one meal a day at school while waiting for my next paycheck.
One year I signed up for summer classes, and school was out. That meant no lunch-lady paychecks or free food. Summer school started. I stopped by the book window to buy books. When I heard the total money, my heart missed a beat. Then I turned to look out of the window to compose myself. I had enough for hooks and nothing else. I wasn't going to eat all summer long.
The book lady must be familiar with students who nearly fainted(晕倒) when they heard the total. She spoke up behind me. "If you like vegetables, our summer staff always leavers their fresh produce on that table you're standing near."
From then on, every few days I took little bits of produce home, so did other students. Those vegetables were a lifesaver.
One day, the book lady was there and I asked her to pass on my thanks. "Please tell the gardening people I really appreciate the produce. I just don't understand why they bother."
The book lady smiled. "Never assume that people are doing fine," she said. "Always share whatever extra you have whenever you can." It was the first time I'd suspected she was the one who was feeding me and other students with fresh produce.
"Never assume that people are doing fine. Always share whatever extra you have whenever you can." That lesson was more important than all the classes I took that summer.
    1. What made the author's life so hard that summer?
A.She had a poor harvest in her garden. B.She didn't have any income to live on.
C.She had to return her monthly bank loan. D.She developed a disease and lost her work.
    2. What does the underlined word "compose" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A.Help. B.Remind. C.Calm. D.Enjoy.
    3. What do you think of the book lady?
    A.Optimistic. B.Devoted. C.Grateful. D.Considerate.
    4. What can be the best title for the passage?
A.The Hard College Life B.Life-saving Vegetables
C.Expectations of a Book Lady D.A Lesson Learned from Gardening
    4.    You’re starving, and the cheese puffs are staring at you from the vending machine. Your stomach rumbles in anticipation as you insert your money, grab the bag, and rip it open. Ahhh...You break in the cheesy scent, then pull out that first bright-orange puff. Your mouth waters, then the cheese powder hits your tongue. Boom! Before you know it, you've finished the whole bag, yet you still crave more.
Like any carefully engineered product, every chip and cheese puff can be reduced to a list of deliberate ingredients and scientific formulas. And it all starts with salt, fat, and sugar.
Food makers know that humans have been hard-wired since the Stone Age to crave those three key elements. Back in prehistoric times, these ingredients were so rare that gorging on them when they were available was important for survival. Today, however, artificially sweet, fatty, and salty foods are cheap and plentiful—so your instincts can set you up to eat again and again.
First, there’s the salt. Junk food manufacturers use it to add flavor and disguise the icky taste of the preservatives that keep processed foods fresh. At 10 cents a pound, salt is a lot cheaper than fresh herbs and spices—plus it helps draw out the saliva that melts these delicious foods in your mouth.
Next, food makers add fat. It's not a taste like sweetness or bitterness, but it produces a powerful sensation they call mouth feel. It's the same feeling you get when you bite into a warm, soft grilled cheese. It sends a strong pleasure signal to the reward center of your brain.
Then there’s sugar —and you already understand how hard that is to resist. But junk food manufacturers also know that when there's too much sugar in a product, your brain will signal you've had enough. So they bring in scientists to calculate just the right amount to make sure you keep on eating. They call that the bliss point: the perfect spot where your body craves more without registering that you’re full.
So is junk food really addictive, like alcohol?

1.The writer started the paragraph by _______.
A.making an imagination B.describing a feeling of hunger
C.teaching the use of the vending machine D.introducing a life's greatest mystery
2.What does the underlined phrase “gorging on” mean?
    A.Producing. B.Eating. C.Storing. D.Consuming.
3.What role does fat play in junk food?
A.It helps keep the food fresh. B.It sends a signal of being full.
C.It brings a pleasure of eating. D.It causes saliva to melt foods.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The three ingredients of every food. B.The increasing popularity of junk food.
C.The tricks of junk food producers. D.The science of irresistible junk food.

It will take place in our school auditorium at 9 o'clock on Saturday morning. So I would like to invite you to go with me.
If you are interested, let's meet at the school gate at 8:30. After the lecture I am sure you will learn how to use chopsticks in a correct way.
