Eighteen years ago, Terry Grahl, was pregnant with her fourth child. "Money was very tight," Terry recalls. So when her mom called to ask if she'd like to go shopping at the local fabric (布料) store for the coming Christmas, she couldn't say no because she knew she badly needed some fabrics to make new clothes for her children. "I remember walking around, gazing at all this beautiful fabric, wondering whether there is anything cheap that I could afford. And I could still get some money left to buy Christmas gifts for my family.
Well, Terry's mom must have known what Terry was thinking. Smiling kindly, she whispered to Terry, "You pick any fabrics you like. It's your Christmas gift from me." Terry's eyes were filed with tears as the cart began to overflow with many fabrics, but not because Terry was planning on making herself a pretty dress or a pair of curtains for the kitchen. Rather, Terry's mom's kindness had inspired some holiday gift ideas in Terry, and it didn't take long for Terry to figure out what she was going to do with all that fabric.
"I was going to make my first quilt," she explains. "Every night I would work on this queen-size quilt. With every stitch (一针), I thought about all that my mom had done for me over the course of my childhood, during which we were always battling homelessness, but Mom somehow managed to fill our lives with love and make everything okay."
On Christmas Day, five days after her baby girl was born, Terry handed her mom a gift box. Inside was the quilt she had sewn, from the fabric her mother had given her as a gift.
    4. What do we know about Terry eighteen years ago?
    A. Terry made a living by making clothes.

With millions of people visiting China's mountains every year, keeping them trash-free is quite difficult. That's where Spiderman cleaners come in.
Spiderman cleaners get their name from the dangerous nature of their job. They dangle(悬荡)thousands of feet above the ground on the side of steep mountain cliffs(悬崖),supported only by ropes,as they try to collect hard-to-reach trash. To show the danger of their work and make tourists think twice before littering, some of them actually exchanged their regular uniforms for Spiderman costumes. This has made them a hit with visitors, who often stop to watch these real-life versions of their favourite superhero, rewarding them with applause and cheers when they complete their task.
Spiderman cleaners really risk their life every time they go after a piece of trash left in popular scenic spots by tourists who never stop to think about the impact their deed may have on nature or the people tasked with cleaning up after them.To them, injuries are frequent and the stress is so great that they sometimes faint(晕倒)on the job.Because of the dangerous nature of the job,few people have the courage to work as Spiderman cleaners and those who do are rewarded generously. For example, the Guimeng Scenic Spot put up an ad for a Spiderman cleaner, offering 10,000 yuan a day,but also mentioned that the work was to be performed "at your own risk".
Spiderman cleaners all around China pick up tons of litter from the scenic mountains every year. Some of them have been doing it for over a decade and they don't plan on stopping anytime soon.Luckily, after the job has been reported by the national media during the past few years, more people have begun to think twice before littering.Less and less trash has been found in recent years, which means Spiderman cleaners don't have to risk their life as often as they used to.
So the next time you feel like throwing a piece of trash in a scenic spot, spare a thought for these unsung heroes and how they risk their life to keep the world clean for everybody.
    8. What is Spiderman cleaners' job according to the passage? ______
    A. Collecting plastic bottles and bags for visitors.
    B. Cleaning rubbish in some steep mountains.
    C. Amusing visitors in Spiderman costumes.
    D. Preventing visitors from throwing rubbish anywhere.

    A. take a great risk at work
    B. take up the occupation out of interest
    C. are usually looked down upon by tourists
    D. are ordered to dress like a real Spiderman
    10. After Spiderman cleaners' work was reported, ______ .
    A. more people fall in love with the job
    B. people know where to throw rubbish
    C. the scenic mountains are becoming safer
    D. the number of uncivilized tourists has decreased
    11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph? ______
    A. To cause a discussion among readers.
    B. To set a daily rule for rude people.
    C. To advise people not to litter.
    D. To call on people to visit a scenic spot
    D
People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans(寿命)that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why.A team at the University of Chicago,US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors(肿瘤)developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal's sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
"An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals,"the study author Dr Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous(癌变的),large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named"Peto's paradox(悖论)".Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not.In the elephant's case, the making of TP53 is nature's way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place.
"Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,"said Joshua Schiffman,a biologist at the School of Medicine,University of Utah,US."It's up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people."
    12. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer? ______
    A. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
    B. They have a rather large body size.
    C. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
    D. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
    13. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals? ______
    A. The huge body mass. B. Deadly tumors.
    C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
    14. What does the underlined part"This phenomenon"in Paragraph 5 probably refer to? ______
    A. The risk of cancer is not related to body size.
    B. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
    C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
    D. The larger animals are,the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
    15. What can be concluded from the passage? ______
    A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
    B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
    C. The extra copies of elephants' genes are used to cure cancer patients.
    D. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.

Kathy took his order and yelled, "Your food will be ready soon." As she turned to leave, the man said, "A smile costs nothing".Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away.
She brought his order, cleared his plates, and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip.
Each time the old man saw her,he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier.
A week went by,and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say, "A smile costs nothing."
But a week later,Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words "I SMILE …$20" at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see.
He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added, "…and a smile,if you don't mind".Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud, "Now,now …" The man jokingly scolded. "I ordered a smile, not a laugh".So Kathy put on a bright smile and said, "Coming right up,sir." And to her surprise,he left $20 tip!

    4~7.【答案】C、B、C、A
Eighteen years ago, Terry Grahl, was pregnant with her fourth child. "Money was very tight," Terry recalls.(18年前,Terry Grahl怀上了她的第四个孩子。“当时资金非常紧张,”Terry回忆道。)可知,十八年以前,Terry和她的家人在那时过着非常艰难的生活,故选C。

    2. 推理判断题。根据第二段Well, Terry's mom must have known what Terry was thinking. Smiling kindly, she whispered to Terry, "You pick any fabrics you like. It's your Christmas gift from me."(Terry的妈妈肯定知道Terry在想什么。

根据倒数第二段With every stitch (一针), I thought about all that my mom had done for me over the course of my childhood, during which we were always battling homelessness, but Mom somehow managed to fill our lives with love and make everything okay.(每一针都让我想起了我的母亲在我的童年时期为我所做的一切,在那段时间里,我们一直在与无家可归作斗争,但母亲设法用爱填充我们的生活,让一切都好起来。)

The First Quilt(第一床被子)符合文意,故选A。

    8~11.【答案】B、A、D、C
Spiderman cleaners get their name from the dangerous nature of their job.They dangle(悬荡)thousands of feet above the ground on the side of steep mountain cliffs(悬崖),supported only by ropes,as they try to collect hard-to-reach trash.(蜘蛛侠清洁工因其工作的危险性而得名。
(2)A. Because of the dangerous nature of the job,few people have the courage to work as Spiderman cleaners and those who do are rewarded generously.(由于这项工作的危险性,很少有人有勇气做蜘蛛侠清洁工,而那些做了的人会得到慷慨的回报。)
Luckily,after the job has been reported by the national media during the past few years,more people have begun to think twice before littering.Less and less trash has been found in recent years,which means Spiderman cleaners don't have to risk their life as often as they used to.(幸运的是,在过去的几年里,这项工作被国家媒体报道后,越来越多的人在乱扔垃圾前开始三思。
So the next time you feel like throwing a piece of trash in a scenic spot, spare a thought for these unsung heroes and how they risk their life to keep the world clean for everybody.(所以,下次你想在一个景点扔垃圾的时候,想想这些无名英雄,想想他们是如何冒着生命危险为每个人保持世界清洁的。)

    12~15.【答案】C、B、A、D
A team at the University of Chicago,US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors(肿瘤)developing.(美国芝加哥大学的一个研究小组发现,大象携带了大量阻止肿瘤发展的基因。)
An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals," the study author Dr Vincent Lynch told The Guardian.(该研究的作者文森特•林奇博士在接受《卫报》采访时表示:"癌症风险的增加阻碍了许多动物向大体型进化。")
(3)A. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.(如果每个活细胞都有同样的机会癌变,那么像鲸鱼和大象这样寿命较长的大型生物,应该比人类和老鼠患癌症的风险更大。 故选A。
(4)D. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants.(准确地说,他们在大象身上发现了20个名为TP53的抗肿瘤基因拷贝。) It's up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people."("这取决于我们了解不同的动物如何处理这个问题,这样我们就可以使用这些策略来预防人类癌症。")
