For many years scientists have been wondering if the moon dirt could be used to grow food.Recently researchers planted a small flowering plant in moon soil taken back by Apollo. All of the seeds grew, but after the first week, the plants grew slowly, most ending up not fully developed. However,Simon Gilroy of the University of Wisconsin, who was not part of the study, said, "It is a big step forward."
The longer the soil was exposed to radiation and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do.Exposed a couple billion years to the elements, the soil collected from the moon was the least helpful for growth. One solution might be to use newly-formed spots on the moon, like lava flows, for digging up soil. The soil environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient mixtures.
Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo crews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth.Early last year,NASA finally gave out 12 grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting experiment.NASA said the timing for such an experiment was finally right, for it planned to put astronauts back on the planet in a few years. Then future astronauts would use local dirt for indoor planting instead of setting up an all-water system.
Sharmila Bhattacharya,a NASA' s program scientist for space biology, said, "The fact that anything grew means that we have a really good starting point, and now the question is how we improve." The scientists hope to reuse their lunar soil later this year to plant more of the plant before possibly moving on to other plants.
8. How did Simon Gilroy feel about the experiment? ______
A. Doubtful. B. Funny. C. Positive. D. Useless.
9. Why is the moon soil from lava flows friendly for growth? ______
A. It is rich in some nutrient materials.
B. It contains more water.
C. No plant-eating insects collect in it.
D. Solar wind has changed it greatly.
10. For what did NASA choose the time for the experiment? ______
A. To draw more attention to it.
B. To collect data for planting on the moon.
C. To make full use of the limited moon soil.
D. To solve the food shortage on the moon.
11. What will the space biologists probably do immediately after the experiment? ______
A. To grow crops without water.
B. To plant in volcanic ash.
C. To grow other plants in moon dirt.
D. To try more of the flowering plant.

Cats are commonly seen licking themselves and animal companions. But once in a while your cat will lick you.
"From birth cats explore the world through their mouths" says Anita Kelsey, a cat expert. Though cats use their nose to smell, they also taste and analyze scent (气味) using their mouth to learn about things. When a cat licks you, it is trying to get more information about you.
But more than that, cats lick who they like. "Cats lick us as a sign of closeness," says Kelsey. "It's a form of getting us clean as they do with other cats they have bonded with. They are also enjoying taking in our scent. They love armpits (腋窝), for example, as there is a strong scent there."
Addition to its affection for you, a cat might lick you for a variety of other reasons. To start with, if your cat is regularly coming at you with its tongue, maybe it wants to mark you as its person. What better way to tell other cats to back off than by painting you with the special perfume (芳香) from their mouth?
To deal with stress of fear, cats also lick. This behavior is especially common in cats which were taken away from their mothers very early, but it can happen in any cat. If the behavior seems to worsen over time, or is accompanied by nervous body language, you need to ask your vet about treatment.
It's very sweet that your cat likes you, but sometimes the licking can get to be too much. Especially because the sandpaper tongue can really hurt! To keep your cat from licking you, you can draw its attention away by a toy, brushing it with a brush or simply walking away, or even just putting a cardboard box in the middle of the floor. It's worth a shot!
12. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Cats smell in two ways.
B. Cats use their mouth more often than their nose.
C. Licking is a way for cats to get themselves informed.
D. Anita Kelsey knows cats quite well.
13. How can a cat easily keep other cats away from its human friend?
A. By following him whenever and wherever he is.
B. By fighting off all the cats close to him.
C. By using perfume to attract his attention.
D. By covering him with kisses.
14. For which purpose is a cardboard box placed before a cat?
A. To take a funny picture.
B. To give it a plaything to play with.
C. To make a house for the animal.
D. To set up a wall between you and your cat.
15. Which of the following can be used as the title of the passage?
A. Why Does Your Cat Lick You? B. You Know Little about Your Cat.
C. Animals Are Our Friends. D. Ways to Show Love.

Many schools make it a rule to check students' school bags. They do this for a variety of reasons, many of which are linked to keeping pupils safe.Schools do not want anything dangerous or distracting kids from their schooling to find their way inside.Recent years have seen many terrible accidents happening in schools, making both teachers and parents worried about the problem.
Mrs.Nabors,a teacher at Jefferson Elementary, feels that all of her kids understand what materials they are not permitted to bring to school. This explains why she seldom takes trouble to do a bag check in her class. However, last Friday Mrs.Nabors and her students had just finished their morning work when the teacher realized something seemed to be wrong,so she suddenly declared to the class that the bag search was about to begin. On hearing the announcement, all her pupils quickly placed their bags on the desk, waiting for checking.
Searching the school bags one by one,she didn't find anything that isn't permitted to bring to school. What she saw were things usually seen in Elementary school pupils' school bags:text books, pencil boxes, calculators(计算器),snacks and food for lunch.Nearly all the students accepted the check peacefully, and some even offered to give the teacher a hand. There was one girl, though, who was watching everything in anxiety. When it's her turn to be checked, eyes to eyes,Mrs.Nabors' immediately sensed that the second-grader was carrying more than simply a forbidden game in her luggage.
