    For people who are deaf the world is often split in two: A world where sound is taken for granted, and another with its own rich culture of deaf history and sign language.
    Poet Raymond Antrobus has always had to navigate between these two worlds, something he examines in his debut(开端)collection The Perseverance, out in the United States just in time for National Poetry Month.
    Antrobus was born in East London to a Jamaican father and British mother. And he was deaf, but no one realized it for the first seven years of his life.
    At 11, he enrolled in a deaf school, where he started learning sign language. And after graduation he went straight into the workforce. “I had a lot of jobs,” he says. “But I was losing a lot of my jobs because I left school pretending I was a hearing person.”
    Antrobus realized that passing as a hearing person wasn’t helping him, so he decided to turn to poetry for solace(慰藉). It was a medium he’d been dabbling in since he was in school. “My grandfather was a poet, and I think that was part of grounding(入门)me,” he says. “For me, poetry always had a place where I could go to listen or to be heard or to belong.”
    As a kid, Antrobus was glad that he lived in London, where he had access to hearing aids and deaf schools. But since writing the book, he has returned to Jamaica and worked with deaf Jamaicans.
    Growing up, Antrobus recalls, he wasn’t taught much about deaf culture or the richness of sign language — on top of his late diagnosis — so learning about deaf life in Jamaica helped ease some of his fears.
    “It was never really a thing where I sat down and thought, oh, I’m a deaf poet. I’m going to write about how I experience sound,” he says. “Poetry was a way for me to just write what my truth was. I think there was a kind of listening I had to do to myself and my own history and to give back to the page.”

    We use what is known as inner speech, where we talk to ourselves, to evaluate situations and make more-informed decisions. Now, a robot has been trained to speak aloud its inner decision-making process, giving us a view of how it prioritizes competing demands.
    Arianna Pipitone and Antonio Chella at the University of Palermo, Italy, programmed a humanoid robot named Pepper, made by SoftBank Robotics in Japan, with software that models human cognitive processes, as well as a text-to-speech processor. This allowed Pepper to voice its decision-making process while completing a task. “With inner speech, we can better understand what the robot wants to do and what its plan is,” says Chella.
    The software allowed Pepper to retrieve(提取) relevant information from its memory and find the correct way to act based on human commands.
    The researchers asked Pepper to set a dinner table according to etiquette rules they had encoded into the robot. Inner speech was either enabled or disabled to see how it affected Pepper’s ability to do what was requested.
    When instructed to place a napkin on a fork with inner speech enabled, Pepper asked itself what the etiquette required and concluded that this request went against the rules it had been given. It then asked the researchers if putting the napkin on the fork was the correct action. When told it was, Pepper said, “OK, I prefer to follow your desire,” and explained how it was going to place the napkin on the fork. When asked to do the same task without voicing the inner speech, Pepper knew this contradicted the etiquette rules, so didn’t perform the task or explain why.
    “With the potential for robots to become more common in the future, this type of programming could help the public understand their abilities and limitations,” says Sarah Sebo at the University of Chicago. “It maintains people’s trust and enables perfect collaborations and interactions between humans and robots,” she says. However, this experiment only used a single human participant, says Sebo. “It’s unclear how their approach would compare across a wide range of human participants,” she says.

    Biofuels(生物燃料), gained from plants and animal matter, are a key solution to the environmental problems caused by fuels like coal. “Bioalcohol(生物酒精) is the most common biofuel and is produced by sugars found in materials such as corn. With some engine redesigned, it can be used directly by cars, buses, etc.,” says Professor Daniel Tan, “12 percent of transport fuel could come from biofuels, especially bioalcohol, by 2030.”
    But a 2016 study of biofuels said, “Bioalcohol presently is mostly produced with food crops. Altogether, the environmentally-friendly biofuels rely on about 2-3 percent of the global water and land used for agriculture, which could feed a large number of hungry people.”
    Energy experts have therefore been trying to deal with the problem. Recent research led by an international team found that the agave(龙舌兰) plant might offer a way out. This plant tends to be the right bioalcohol source to supersede(取代) others such as sugarcane(甘蔗) and corn.
    Daniel Tan explains that the agave can be grown in unfavorable conditions and is not a major food crop. “It can grow in areas that lack water and rainfall without being watered by farmers, and it does not compete with food crops or put demands on limited water. This kind of useful plant is recently being grown in Australia. It can survive Australia’s hot summers,” he says.
    The study finds that sugarcane produces just a little more fuel per square meter each year than the agave. However, the agave outperforms sugarcane in a range of areas, including pollution to the earth, and water using. The agave uses 69 percent less water than sugarcane and 46 percent less water than corn for the same amount of fuel produced. As for corn, it produces less fuel per square meter each year than the agave.
    However, Daniel Tan states: “The first generation of bioalcohol from the agave recently faces a big competition from oil, whose recent low price makes it far more attractive to customers. Without some policy support from the government, bioalcohol production from the agave faces big challenges.”

    Henry Grant, a week shy of starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak’s record. Therefore, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day. He watched 15 or so other hikers enjoy the vista; one hiker, around 60 and dressed in pink, was peeking over the lip of the cliff with her husband.
    When Grant’s mother rejoined him, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly, he heard a heavy dull sound, he told the Cornell Daily Sun. Then he heard something chilling: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled wildly. Grant wheeled around. The woman in pink was no-where to be seen. She’d fallen off the side of the mountain.
    Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant told his mother, “I hate to say this, but they’re probably going to find a body.”
    Uncertain they could help, Grant and his mother headed down the trail. But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. “My young dumb brain was like, ‘I can do it,’” he says. After assuring his mother that he would be safe, he made a long and difficult journey alone, hoping he wasn’t too late.
    After 15 minutes of scrambling over the large rock, pushing past prickly(多刺的) brush, and slipping down patches of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure about 25 feet above him. She was dressed in pink and crumpled in a kneeling position on a small rocky.
    The woman had fallen about 75 feet.
    Unexpectedly, she was alive.
    “Paula!” Grant shouted. “Paula. Is that you?”

Afraid that in her muddled state of mind she might tumble off the outcropping to her death, Grant crawled on all fours up a tight, narrow path, gaining traction by digging into the dirt with his fingers and feet until he reached Paula. She was moaning and barely making sense. Her head, arms, and legs were bleeding. Securing himself against a tree, Grant gently put her hand in his and tried to keep her mind off the pain by peppering her with questions.

    About 45 minutes later, first responders arrived on the top. To reach them, a rescuer rappelled down and secured Paula to a stretcher. Rescuers at the summit lifted the stretcher to the top and then carried her to a waiting ATV. Eventually, Paula and her husband would be flown by helicopter to a hospital.
