Many popular modem board games were invented in the United States. But some of our favorite games came from other countries and have deep historic roots.
Parcheesi
Parcheesi came from India, where it is known as pachisi. The Mogul King Akbar, who ruled India in the 1500s, actually had a life-sized version of pachisi in his garden. Parcheesi came to America around 1870, and now has many variations of it—where each player has four pawns (兵)and races to be the first one to get them all safely to a home base.
Checkers
Though simpler than Chess, Checkers offers plenty of strategic considerations for its players. Developing from a Middle Eastern game called alquerque, Checkers was introduced to America in the 1930s and has a number of variations that have been played since at least 3000 B.C.
Backgammon
Backgammon originated in Mesopotamia around 3000 B.C. In the game, two players took turns rolling dice in a race to be the first one to get their 15 pieces off the board. Introduced to America in 1920, Backgammon became wildly popular then and remains so today, especially in its electronic version.
Mancala
Mancala means “to move” in Arabic. Players take turns to move pieces on its special board until all the pieces have been captured. Ancient game boards dating from the 6th and 7th centuries have been found carved in stone in Ethiopia. Mancala was brought into America in 1940 by immigrants from Cape Verde in Africa. And yes-it is played online!
21. Which of the following was first introduced to America?
A. Parcheesi. B. Checkers. C. Backgammon. D. Mancala.
22. What do Backgammon and Mancala have in common.
A. Each game has four players. B. They have digital versions.
C. Their boards were carved in stone. D. They date back to 3000 years ago.
23. In which column of a magazine can this text be found?
A. Health. B. Economy. C. Science. D. Entertainment.

When a group of college kids channeled their pandemic troubles into action, they never imagined the project would fuel a nationwide movement to tackle hunger and food waste.
But that's exactly what Farmlink has done since 2020, bringing together hundreds of young volunteers to rescue nearly 77 million pounds of harvests headed for the trash and delivered them to those in need. The organization's efforts help farmers, the environment, and people struggling to feed their families all at once.
Launched during the height of the pandemic in spring, 2020, Farmlink was initially supposed to help struggling families and food banks. "In the United States, 40 million Americans are food insecure, said Aidan Reilly, who co-founded Farmlink. “Meanwhile, we're throwing out over 100 billion pounds of food every year." Learning that local farms were forced to destroy excess produce that they couldn't sell, especially with restaurants and schools closed, Aidan and a group of friends worked together to contact farms coast to coast.
In California, they found a farmer who had 13,000 eggs that could be donated, and Reilly offered to do the pickup and delivery himself. That was the first of many more deliveries. With“we'll come to you” as their catchphrase, the group rented trucks and attempted to do all the food pickup and deliveries themselves.
The students ultimately got a welcome help from Uber Freight, and with the help of professional drivers, they moved more than one million pounds of produce from farms to food banks within just two months, transforming their passion project into a massive logistics(物流)operation in the process. Word spread, and more and more young people at home during the pandemic reached out to help.
Farmlink has worked with more than 100 farms and 300 communities in the US, rescuing and moving enough food to distribute more than 64 million meals.
24. What is Farmlink?
A. A project. B. A volunteer. C. A food bank. D. A college.

Mr. Watson is late again. He has no time for breakfast. But at least he has the basic necessities: Bang on the minute, the coffee machine supplies his first hot drink: The motion sensor is activated and notifies the garage door, which now opens. In all the rush, he has forgotten to switch off the iron and light. No problem, he deals with that while underway via his smartphone.
What Mr. Watson benefits from is the idea of Smart home, an idea more topical and attractive than ever. “Smart Home” was brought to life through continuous technological progress, in particular through the Internet and computer. Science fiction literature in the 1950s described the first visions of homes that were monitored and controlled fully automatically by machines. The 1999 Disney film “Smart House” was about household computers and the consequences when smart machines took on a life of their own. The Fraunhofer inHaus Center, which was opened in Duisburg in 2001, was a lighthouse project which involved exploring and testing new system solutions in a residential environment. The first T-Com House from Deutsche Telekom in Berlin was opened to interested visitors in 2005. The focus of this model project was on connecting various home appliances and controlling them by means of different input devices.
Scientists have already been working for decades of years on “Smart Home”. You may have noticed there's a layer of dried autumnal leaves building up on paths and pavements across the UK, even though we're technically still in summer and most of the country is enjoying moderate temperatures.
Normally, trees shed their leaves every autumn as a means to survive the winter. Dropping them prevents the water in the cells of the leaves from freezing as temperatures drop and means new ones can grow in their place the following year. During this process the leaves go from greens, which allow them to process sunlight for "food" during the summer, to oranges and reds as the trees store the supply for winter. This is usually caused by reducing sunlight levels as the days get shorter.
However, the changing colours of the leaves and the early leaf fall this year indicate that trees are distressed (苦恼的)following the record-breaking temperatures of July, the almost-as-hot August days, coupled with a lack of rainfall across the summer. According to Leigh Hunt, the senior horticultural adviser at the Royal Horticultural Society, trees are "shutting up shop”. He told the BBC, “It's giving the appearance that we're already in autumn but the days are too long for those natural autumn processes to begin.”
The shocking change in weather means many trees may end up dying. It’s not just trees that have been affected, either. Fruits and nuts are also ripening much faster due to the bizarre(异乎寻常的) climate, which means wildlife food supply could be seriously interrupted.
So, can the trees recover? Hunt told the BBC there's a chance that trees which have only lost a few leaves, or experienced slight yellowing should recover if there is enough rainfall. But if it dries up completely, to survive through the desperate situation, some trees might end up producing more seeds to try and reproduce.
32. What is the problem bf the trees in the UK this year?
A. Leaves can't process sunlight. B. The water in the leaves freezes.
C. Leaves turn yellow and fall early. D. New leaves can t grow in place.
33. What does "this" in Paragraph 2 refer to ?
A. The drop in temperature.
B. The change of leaves’ colours.
C. The decrease in sunlight.
D. The process of growing leaves.
34. Why are trees suffering this year?
A. A record-low temperature.
B. The early arrival of autumn.
C. A severe heat and drought.
D. The decreasing sunlight levels.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. It’s possible for trees to recover.
B. Trees become bare this year.
C. Rainfall means little to trees' recovery.
D. Many trees have died out in the UK.

It was the last day of school. The cool kids wanted to have some fun. I was eager to join them, but I felt uneasy.
I could well remember what it was like when the colored balls exploded the last time. When William, the coolest boy, was in mid-air and threw out the small balls, huge clouds of blue and yellow smoke rose from them. And the ground was in an awful mess. Then there was the furious principal, a frown on his face.
“So, are you ready?” William brought me back to reality.
I gasped and stammered, "I…I'm not sure. I don't want to die, William.”
“Aw, is someone scared?” he raised the pitch of his voice to mock me.
The crowd burst into laughter. I felt my face burning. There were screams from them, “Just do it!” Maybe I should just do it. Maybe I should just step away like many other classmates.
I was silent for a few seconds and reluctantly I stood up and stuck my chest out, acting as if I was brave and bold. “Give me the helmet.” I reached out my hand. My stomach still felt like someone was stirring my inside around and around and around. Getting the helmet and safety pads, I slowly tightened them.
1 ,2, 3, go! They all chanted. At the call of go, I pushed my feet off the ground, moving the skateboard forward. The wheels rolled over the rough grey ground. I felt a rush of everything from the wind against my face to the blood that was rushing around my body from my racing heart. The hairs on my arms jumped up as I got closer to the ramp (斜坡). Though I heard the children surrounding me cheering my name “Stephan! Stephan!”, I felt my heart beat faster and faster, hands sweating. A lump formed in my throat as I approached the ramp, where William was ready to give me two small colored balls.
“Do it and you will be one of us!” exclaimed William, forcing the balls into my hands. I stood back automatically.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
