From Alton Towers to Legoland, our experts pick their favorite British theme parks, highlighting the best roller coasters, character-led attractions, and animal safaris
    Drayton Manor
The Staffordshire theme park includes rides for all ages but stands out for having hit on a winning formula for young families with its expanding Thomas Land section. The 286-acre site is set in woodlands but the main village is enough for little legs to explore, making it well suited to pre-and primary school children.
    Paultons Family Theme Park
On the edge of New Forest National Park, in Hampshire, Paultons Family Theme Park sits in 140 acres of attractive parkland. Although overshadowed by Thorpe Park and Alton Towers in terms of big rides, the park is home to Peppa Pig World, as well as 60 rides and attractions, and is best for families with young children.
    Chessington World of Adventures
This park in Surrey has injected novelty (新奇) this year with the launch of its exclusive Gruffalo River Ride Adventure, raising its status as a family-friendly destination. The park also provides added family value with the opportunity to get a close-up interaction with animals including monkey walk-throughs and the Zufari safari experience.
    Legoland Windsor
If you’re looking for stomach-in-the-mouth roller coasters, Legoland is not for you. This is the entry-level theme park for families with kids below the age of 12, with bucket-loads to keep them happy. Now in its third decade, set in lovely grounds, the theme park still has some of the charm of the original Danish parent park, with plenty of giraffes, crocodiles and pirates made out of Lego bricks spread over the rides.
    1. Which of the following is recommended if a family want to interact with animals?
    A. Drayton Manor
    B. Paultons Family Theme Park
    C. Chessington World of Adventures
    D. Legoland Windsor
    2. What do the four theme parks have in common?
    A. They’re all ideal for children.
    B. They all feature thrilling big rides.
    C. They’re all renewing recreational facilities.
    D. They all cover a vast area of over 200 acres.
    3. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
    A. To promote ecotourism.
    B. To value family union.
    C. To introduce theme parks.
    D. To compare tourist attractions.

I was in Houston a few weeks ago, and needed to be back home in Austin by midmorning the next day. Though I usually left in the evening, for some reason last time I had to choose to set off after midnight.
I was on my way back to Austin when I realized I left an important file, and knew I had to return to get it. I took the first exit I could, but when I rounded the corner, an 18-wheeler was stopped dead in the exit lane. I swerved to avoid it, and then I realized that there was something wrong with my car. So I pulled into a small parking lot and unsurprisingly found the area deserted at 3:15 am. I’ve lived in urban areas most of my life. I’m fairly street-wise and don’t become frightened easily, but I knew I was in a pretty tough neighborhood.
There was no one in Houston to pick me up. I immediately locked the doors and picked up my phone to call a tow truck. Soon a young man knocked on my driver’s side window and asked if he could help me. Judging from his appearance, he was far from a mad man, but I knew he was far more likely to rob than help me. So I lied to him. After a while, he asked again, but this time I politely refused and told him the tow truck was due any minute. He finally said, “Madam, you need help. A tow truck in Houston will arrive anywhere between 45 minutes and approximately never (which I knew was true), and you aren’t going anywhere until you change your flat tire.”
After considering thoroughly, I got out. He looked surprised, but got right to work. He changed the tire, returned the seat to its place and said, “Thank you for letting me help you. You gave me a chance when most people would never open the door to someone like me. Would it be okay if I gave you a hug?” When I recovered, I gave him a giant hug. I left with a new tire and a renewed faith in human nature.
    4. What’s the matter with the author’s car?
    A. It couldn’t get started. B. Its oil ran out.
    C. It was out of control. D. Its tire burst.
    5. Why did the author lie to the man and refuse his help in the beginning?
    A. Because she thought the man was playing jokes.
    B. Because she thought the man might be a bad man.
    C. Because she thought the man wanted to get a lift.
D Because she thought the man was a mad man.
    6. Which of the following can best describe the author?
    A. Stubborn but brave. B. Impolite and dishonest.
    C. Cautious and brave. D. Generous but dishonest.
    7. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
    A. Attitude Determines Everything B. Help in the Dead of Night
    C. The Fight against Robbing on My Way D. An Unexpected Traffic Accident
D 5. B 6. C 7. B
根据文章第三段关键句“A tow truck in Houston will arrive anywhere between 45 minutes and approximately never (which I knew was true), and you aren’t going anywhere until you change your flat tire.
根据文章第三段关键句“Judging from his appearance, he was far from a mad man, but I knew he was far more likely to rob than help me. So I lied to him. After a while, he asked again, but this time I politely refused and told him the tow truck was due any minute.
根据文章第三段关键句“Judging from his appearance, he was far from a mad man, but I knew he was far more likely to rob than help me. So I lied to him. 所以我骗了他)”及第四段关键句“After considering thoroughly, I got out.
根据文章第二段关键句“I swerved to avoid it, and then I realized that there was something wrong with my car. So I pulled into a small parking lot and unsurprisingly found the area deserted at 3:15 am. He changed the tire, returned the seat to its place(他看起来很惊讶,但马上就开始工作了。 因此,“Help in the Dead of Night(夜深人静时的帮助)”适合做本文最佳标题。故选B项。
    C
Every time we get on a plane, we’re asked to either turn off our phones or change them to flight mode — it’s for “security reasons”. But according to The Conversation website, having to turn our phones off on a plane is “a service issue, not a safety one”.
When we speak on our phones in the air, they can cause interference to the aircraft’s radios and pilots can hear this interference in their headphones. “It’s the same noise you’ll be familiar with, if you put your mobile too close to a speaker,” the Mirror noted. “It is not safety-critical, but is annoying for sure.” Though speaking on a phone during a flight isn’t dangerous, from the viewpoint of service, it isn’t still a good idea. When we make or receive a call on the ground, we connect to a cell tower that deals with all calls within an 80-kilometer radius (半径). As we move from place to place we are “handed on” to different cell towers. As US scientist Sven Bilen explains, for this system to work, there are “built-in” expectations: There shouldn’t be too many “handoffs” and people shouldn’t be traveling faster than car speeds. “Of course, phone users should be close to the ground.” he added. If we were to make phone calls while we flew, however, none of these expectations would be met. And even worse, our cellphones would stop working.
But now things are beginning to change. If we still can’t speak during a flight we can use other phone functions. For example, Airbus A330 of Emirates Airlines has inflight WiFi to make passengers send and receive short messages in the air. In the future, as Bilen points out, it may be possible for air travelers to make and receive calls freely. The breakthrough could be “pico cells”, which are small cell towers on the plane itself. There would no longer be connections made between phones and the ground and therefore there would be no danger of disturbance of phone service.
One day, perhaps, we will be chatting in the air as much as we chat on the ground.
    8. Why is making a phone call NOT allowed on a plane?
    A. Because it will pose a threat to their safety.
    B. Because it can guarantee a better service.
    C. Because it fails to be connected to the cell tower.
    D. Because it may cause annoying noise to pilots.
    9. How many “built-in” expectations are mentioned to help make a call?
    A. One.
    B. Two.
    C. Three.
    D. Four.
    10. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. People need to travel slower than airplane speeds while phoning.
    B. Pico cells may contribute to free phone calls on a plane.
    C. Undisturbed phone service has been provided by airlines.
    D. Passengers can receive calls on Airbus A330 through inflight WiFi.
    11. Where is the text most likely from?
    A. A newspaper.
    B. An official document.
    C. A guidebook.
    D. A science fiction story.
D 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据文章第二段“When we speak on our phones in the air, they can cause interference to the aircraft’s radios and pilots can hear this interference in their headphones. “It’s the same noise you’ll be familiar with, if you put your mobile too close to a speaker,” the Mirror noted.”
根据文章第二段“As US scientist Sven Bilen explains, for this system to work, there are “built-in” expectations: There shouldn’t be too many “handoffs” and people shouldn’t be traveling faster than car speeds. “Of course, phone users should be close to the ground.” he added.”
根据文章倒数第二段“In the future, as Bilen points out, it may be possible for air travelers to make and receive calls freely. The breakthrough could be “pico cells”, which are small cell towers on the plane itself.”
故选A。
    D
In a fascinating paper published last year in Science, a team led by Andreas Nieder of the University of Tubingen in Germany showed that crows —already known to be among the most intelligent of animals —are even more impressive than we knew. In fact, the evidence suggests that they are self-aware and, in an important sense, conscious
Crows had been observed previously to use tools to solve certain problems. Nieder’s experiment showed that the birds were actively evaluating how to solve a particular problem; in effect, they were thinking it over. This ability to consciously assess a problem was associated with the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) in the brains of humans, which birds don’t have.
Other studies support the idea that the bird brain can, in principle, support the development of higher intelligence. It had been dismissed in the past due to the small size of birds’ brains. But recent research has shown that in birds, the neurons (神经元) are smaller and more lightly-packed, which makes sense to reduce weight and makes it easier lo fly. The total number of brain cell in crows (about 1.5 billion) is about the same as that in some monkey species. But because they are more tightly-packed, the communication between the neurons seems to be better, and the overall intelligence of crows may be closer to that of gorillas (猩猩).
This research has important consequences for our understanding of the evolution of higher intelligence. First, a cerebral cortex is not needed, and there are other means to achieve the same outcome. Second, either the evolution of consciousness is very ancient tracing back to the last common ancestor of mammals and birds about 320 million years ago, or, equally interesting, consciousness arose at least twice later on, independently in mammals and birds. Both options raise the possibility that higher intelligence on the planet may not necessarily be mammal or human-like, but could very well be birdlike.
    12. What did Andreas Nieder’s team find out about crows?
    A. They are more intelligent than other animals.
    B. They have left people a very good impression.
    C. They are much cleverer than previously thought.
    D. They can use tools to solve certain problems.
    13. What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. The idea. B. The bird brain.
    C. The development. D. Higher intelligence.
    14. Why do crows have high-level intelligence?
    A. They have more tightly-packed brains.
    B. They have a small number of brain cells.
    C. Their brain neurons could communicate well.
    D. Their brain cells are the same with the monkeys.
    15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Cerebral cortexes are necessary for the evolution of higher intelligence.
    B. Both mammals and birds got their intelligence from common ancestors.
    C. Higher intelligence has already developed separately in different species.
    D. Higher intelligence on the planet might be different from what we imagine.
C 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“In a fascinating paper published last year in Science, a team led by Andreas Nieder of the University of Tubingen in Germany showed that crows —already known to be among the most intelligent of animals — are even more impressive than we knew.”(在去年发表在《科学》杂志上的一篇引人入胜的论文中,由德国图宾根大学的安德烈亚斯·尼德领导的一个研究小组表明,乌鸦——已经被认为是最聪明的动物之一——甚至比我们所知的更令人印象深刻)及第二段“Crows had been observed previously to use tools to solve certain problems. Nieder’s experiment showed that the birds were actively evaluating how to solve a particular problem; in effect, they were thinking it over.”(之前人们观察到乌鸦会使用工具来解决某些问题。
根据划线词前的“Other studies support the idea that the bird brain can, in principle, support the development of higher intelligence.”
根据第三段“But because they are more tightly-packed, the communication between the neurons seems In be better, and the overall intelligence of crows may be closer to that of gorillas.”(但由于脑细胞的排列更紧密,神经元之间的交流似乎更好,乌鸦的整体智力可能更接近大猩猩)可知,乌鸦的智力很高是因为它们的大脑神经元之间能够很好地交流,故选C。
根据最后一段“Both options raise the possibility that higher intelligence on the planet may not necessarily be mammal or human-like, but could very well be birdlike.”(这两种选择都提出了一种可能性,即地球上的高智商生物不一定是哺乳动物或类人的,但很可能是类鸟的)可知,地球上的高智商生物可能与我们想象的不同,故选D。
Don’t Ruin Healthy Eating When You Travel
I’ve noticed that, as people become more conscious of how food affects their health, leaving home can sometimes present challenges for those who want to keep eating well. Here are some simple ways to eat adventurously and well while you’re enjoying the best moments of your trip:
Plan ahead. Often when we’re traveling, we’re out of our routine and aren’t eating at regular intervals. ____16____Contrary to the popular myth that you should hold off eating to save room for a big meal, going for long stretches without eating actually causes your body to become tired and hang on to calories. Pack snacks for easy access: nuts, seeds, hard-boiled eggs, firm fruits.
Don’t forget the grocery store. A supermarket, especially a local one, can be your best place to get something to eat while traveling. ____17____You’ll find a wider variety of great foods that are free of fat, dairy, and other common allergense (过敏素) at a reasonable cost.
Drink more water than you normally do. ____18____Walking around all day expends energy and dehydrates (脱水) your body. Often people drink alcohol or sodas with meals, and these are also dehydrating. Drinking more than your usual eight glasses of water a day will keep you energized, hydrate your cells and keep your skin glowing.
Drink less alcohol than everyone around you is drinking. This can be challenging, especially on business trips, where drinking is a familiar pastime. ____19____
____20____Let yourself have treats, and enjoy them- just keep it to once a day. Get that good piece of chocolate cake. Have an extra helping of steak fries. Order the thing with butter, and love every single bite. Then be done with the less-than-healthy food, and remember that you always have another day for that one little indulgence (放纵).
    A. Just enjoy the treats that you like.
    B. Try the“one-and-done” rule.
    C. Planes and hotel rooms are generally dry.
    D. Sometimes we can go several hours without eating anything.
    E. However, drinking too much can lead to more unhealthy eating.
    F. You’ll have easy, cheap access to fresh produce and healthy snacks.
    G. Planning ahead of time allows you to control what goes into your body.
D 17. F 18. C 19. E 20. B
上文“Often when we’re traveling, we’re out of our routine and aren’t eating at regular intervals. 可知上文在讲述旅行时会打乱常规,饮食不规律;下文“Contrary to the popular myth that you should hold off eating to save room for a big meal, going for long stretches without eating actually causes your body to become tired and hang on to calories. D“Sometimes we can go several hours without eating anything.
上文“A supermarket, especially a local one, can be your best place to get something to eat while traveling. 可知讲述了当地超市是旅行时买食物的最佳去处;下文“You’ll find a wider variety of great foods that are free of fat, dairy, and other common allergense (过敏素) at a reasonable cost. F“You’ll have easy, cheap access to fresh produce and healthy snacks.
上文“Drink more water than you normally do. 可知在讲述要比平时多喝水;下文“Walking around all day expends energy and dehydrates (脱水) your body. C“Planes and hotel rooms are generally dry.
本段标题“Drink less alcohol than everyone around you is drinking. 可知本段主要讲的就是要少喝酒;上文“This can be challenging, especially on business trips, where drinking is a familiar pastime. E“However, drinking too much can lead to more unhealthy eating.
下文“Let yourself have treats, and enjoy them- just keep it to once a day. Get that good piece of chocolate cake. Have an extra helping of steak fries. Order the thing with butter, and love every single bite. Then be done with the less-than-healthy food, and remember that you always have another day for that one little indulgence (放纵).

    10.from删去

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.
There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son should never learn to read and to write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire about his dog, which was missing. He found the little boy, whose name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No. I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy said Charles.” I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that.”
“My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and to write.”
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. They told him it was what they wished above all things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles did not always amuse himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”

The moment the gentleman left, Mr. Rose went in search of his son. He went to the river, and walked up and down, in hope of seeing the boat. Not seeing it, he grew uneasy. He thought Charles must have gone a long way off. Unwilling to leave without learning something of him, he went to the hut. He put his head in at the window, which was open. There a pleasant sight met his eyes. Charles was at the table, ruling a copybook Joe was reading to him, while his mother was spinning in the corner. Charles was a little confused. He feared his father might not be pleased; but he had no need to be uneasy, for his father was delighted.
The next day, his father took him to town, and gave him books for himself and Joe, with writing paper, pens, and ink. Charles was the happiest boy in the world when he came home. He ran to Joe, his hands filled with parcels, and his heart beating with joy.
