A flood hit Yellowstone National Park on June 13, 2022. The disaster was caused by a combination of unusually heavy rains and rapid snow melt. The high and fast water flows destroyed bridges and swept away entire roadways, leaving communities and homes isolated. Fortunately, the approximately 10,000 park visitors were safely evacuated.
The town of Gardiner, along the Montana-Wyoming border, was particularly hard hit. The floodwaters left almost 900 people with no power or water for many days. Gardiner’s economy, which depends on the almost three-quarters of a million visitors who pass through the park’s north gate annually, is likely to take a hit. The floodwaters severely damaged the main north entrance road to Yellowstone, and could take years to rebuild.
Park officials have begun work on improving an alternative road to Gardiner. This will ensure that locals can access food, supplies, and other essential emergency services. A limited number of tourists may also be allowed into Gardiner once the road is stable.
Yellowstone’s north gate is closed indefinitely. But the park’s south gate opened to visitors on June 22, 2022. Park officials have started a new entry system to prevent overcrowding. It is based on the last number of the visitor’s vehicle license plate and the calendar date of the month. Cars with odd (奇数的) numbers can visit the park on odd days of the month, while those with even (偶数的) numbers can go on even days.
Established in 1872, Yellowstone is America’s oldest national park. The 3,472-square-mile reserve spans three states and is home to many unique wildlife. It is known for its natural beauty that includes mountains, rivers and lakes. The forces of fire and ice shaped the park over thousands of years.
8. What does the underlined word “isolated” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Tracked. B. Separated.
C. Decorated. D. Improved.
9. What was the possible result of the flood?
A. Gardiner’s economy would get into trouble.
B. Communities and homes were left in ruins.
C. Almost 900 people were trapped in the park.
D. The park’s south gate was closed for a while.
10. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Local people can get daily necessities from visitors.
B. The park has adopted a new system to recognize faces.
C. The license plate number decides when cars enter the park.
D. More tourists may flood into the park for geological features.
11. What can be the best title for the text?

The floodwaters severely damaged the main north entrance road to Yellowstone, and could take years to rebuild.”(蒙大拿州和怀俄明州交界处的加德纳受灾尤其严重。

Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one weekly course on labor education, according to a new curriculum standard released by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Labor education ranges from household chores to on-campus labor and community volunteer services, generally 3 types according to the new standards: the first refers to everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances (家电); next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts (手工艺品), and applying new technologies such as 3D printing; the third type is service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of extra-curricular and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school year.
A recent study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spend an average of 12 minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Many countries start students’ labor education at a young age. Finland begins to develop students’ life skills in primary school. Spinning, woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils have two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career guidance are all taught there.
Adding labor education was out of concern that the country’s youngsters do too little housework and look down on manual labor (体力劳动) jobs. Due to great academic pressure, schools tend to put their academic curricula on the top, and parents sometimes see household chores as distractions. But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around development.
12. What is the purpose of adding labor education?
A. To enrich the students’ off-campus life.
B. To improve the students’ performance on learning.
C. To help students achieve an all-around development.
D. To follow the education mode of some western countries.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The history of labor education.
B. The content of labor education.
C. The significance of labor education.
D. The future development of labor education.
14. What does labor education in Finland and Germany have in common?
A. They start labor education in the middle school.
B. There are a wide variety of labor education courses.
C. It is viewed more important than academic learning.
D. Students spend more than 30 minutes on housework daily.
15. What do we know about labor education in China?
A. A week of extracurricular activities is a must every term.
B. Students decide whether to take the courses on their own.
C. Specially-designed courses have been applied for many years.
D. The school has to recognize the importance of labor education.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. D

But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around development.(增加劳动教育是出于对该国年轻人做家务太少和看不起体力劳动的担忧(体力劳动) 工作。

Get kitted out
_____18_____. If you’re planning to complete a long walk, you’ll need to road-test the trainers. Your feet get bigger when you walk all day, so choose shoes that have some spreading room. Also consider buying some walking-specific kit. Look for light, sweat-taking materials.
Research a route
Finding a long-distance route can be tricky but there are plenty of resources to help. The Ramblers (ramblers.org.uk), for example, offers more than 2,500 routes with written directions. _____19_____.
Start slowly

We were headed to the nationally famous Blue Owl Restaurant, in historic Kimmswick, Missouri, to celebrate our sixtieth anniversary. It is said that the restaurant is warm and romantic with smiling waitresses dressed in long blue dresses with white aprons. The food was delicious, and the service was extremely attentive. On Valentine’s Day, the restaurant offers a sweetheart dinner that is well worth the price. So we decided to have a try.
The weather report had forecast freezing rain, but not until long after midnight. We would be safely home by then. But then, as we approached the restaurant, there was a downpour of freezing rain. We were closer to the restaurant than home so it seemed wise to advance in that direction.
By the time we arrived, the street in front of the restaurant was a sheet of ice. The parking lot was also a sheet of ice and in front of our car was a pool of water. I couldn’t pull in the parking lot and I knew, even if I parked on the street, we would never be able to get out and walk on that ice.
My husband couldn’t walk steadily and I was not strong enough to accompany him to cross the street. I was afraid we would fall, so we were planning to give up the meal in the fancy restaurant. But we really wanted to try the special chocolate-covered strawberries that were as large as baseballs. Also, we wanted to take pictures of the two of us for our memory album.
At that moment, an unknown lady walked toward us.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To our surprise, the lady, who patiently helped us go into the Blue Owl, was just the owner the famous restaurant.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】At that moment, an unknown lady walked toward us. She called out, “Were you wanting to go in there? ” I nodded and said, “We can’t go in there and I think we have to give up the wonderful meal.” She quickly came up with a plan and said, “Just pull the car in front of the restaurant steps and I will walk you in. I will park your car for you and you will be safe.” Following her guidance, I pulled the car up to the bottom of the steps. She locked arms with us, one at a time, and walked us up the steps to the door patiently.
To our surprise, the lady, who patiently helped us go into the Blue Owl, was the owner of the famous restaurant. We didn’t know how to express our gratitude (感谢). She had taken the time, on this very busy night, to make sure we were okay. We would never forget her kindness in the face of what could have become a disaster for us. We would remember our sixtieth anniversary dinner fondly, and with a deep respect for a wonderful, kind, and caring human being.
