Constantly forcing knowledge and experiences into your brain may seem like the quickest path to self-improvement. But sometimes the best thing you can do for your brian is absolutely nothing at all.
Taking time to space out — whether by showering, pulling weeds, or petting a dog — provides an opportunity for what psychologists call wakeful rest. It’s a time when you can put immediate tasks aside like how to meet the work deadline and instead focus on current feelings, reflect on the past, and think about the future.
In the blankness, MRI (磁共振) brain imaging shows a harmony of gray matter called the default mode network (默认模式网络) takes control. Neuroscientists (神经系统科学家) still don’t completely understand how this system works, but they think it connects inharmonious parts of our brains, which can help us find meaning in our messy lives. “This blankness might also reduce anxiety, boost creativity, and improve memory,” says Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, a neuroscientist at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute.
The trouble is, the battle of life leaves little room to let your mind wander. Many spend their free time-consuming entertainment. It may feel relaxing but requires brainpower to enjoy. Fortunately, there are ways to encourage your resting-state network to take over:
    FIND YOUR JOY
Casual hobbies that are totally different from your day job can help prevent out-of-office anxiety.
    GET AWAY
New surroundings give your brain a break from environmental cues, like the sight of your desk and laptop, that tell it to work.
    SWITCH OFF
Information can be too attractive to ignore. Turning off any and all devices helps maintain relaxation mode.
4.What is “wakeful rest” according to the psychologists in the text?
A.It is a time to space out. B.It is a system to take control.
C.It is a state to concentrate. D.It is an opportunity to work.
5.In what aspect can this blankness benefit us?
    A.Promoting creativity. B.Managing moods.
    C.Removing anxiety. D.Controlling brains.
6.Which activity does the author suggest to a stressful software engineer?
A.Working on his desk in a new office.
    B.Playing his favorite computer games.
C.Doing some gardening in the backyard.
    D.Developing a software with colleagues.
7.Where can we probably read the text?
A.A book review. B.A science journal.
C.A guide book. D.A film poster.
    C
During the outbreak of novel coronavirus, cities are locked down and borders are closed. Science, on the contrary, is becoming more open. And this “open science” is already making a difference.
Soon after the epidemic (流行病) started in China, a research team from Fudan University in Shanghai successfully sequenced (测定序列) the DNA of the virus. But they didn’t keep the information to themselves. Instead, they placed the sequences on GenBank, an open-access data platform, so researchers around the world could download them for free and start studying the virus.
Due to this openness, companies producing drugs across the globe are now able to work at the same time to develop a vaccine (疫苗). “There may be room for multiple different vaccines for different purposes and different age groups,” Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security in the US, told Al Jazeera. “The bigger menu we have of vaccines, the more flexible we’ll be when fighting against coronavirus outbreaks in the future.”
Major drug companies around the world are also sharing their study results. Remdesivir, a drug originally developed by US company Gilead Sciences to treat Ebola, is found to be promising in fighting against the novel coronavirus. Currently, two trials of the drug are already underway in China, and the results might be available as soon as April, according to The Verge.
This openness in science is going to be even more important in the future. “With climate change, increasing globalization, and population shifts, epidemics will not go away, and might even become more frequent,” Dan Barouch, a Harvard Medical School professor, told Harvard Magazine.
He said, “No one group can do everything. It has to be a cooperative approach. But I do think that the world has a greater sense of readiness this time to develop knowledge, drugs, and treatment very rapidly.”
Every epidemic is indeed a crisis, but it can also be a learning opportunity. One redeeming (补偿的) factor of the COVID-19 outbreak is that it is helping science adapt for the better.
8.What does the article mainly talk about?
A.Coordinated efforts to fight the epidemic in Africa.
B.Some scientific knowledge we’ve learned from the epidemic.
C.The significance of openness and sharing of scientific knowledge.
D.What needs to be done to prevent future epidemics.
9.The positive effect of what the research team from Fudan University did is that ________.

B.they helped remove people’s fear of the virus
C.they showed the world how to produce a vaccine
D.they invited collective efforts worldwide to develop a vaccine
10.What is the author’s purpose of mentioning remdesivir in paragraph 4?
A.To introduce a possible cure for the epidemic.
B.To compare the treatment of Ebola and the novel coronavirus.
C.To prove that many drug companies readily share their discoveries.
D.To show that the novel coronavirus will soon be contained.
11.Which of the following would Dan Barouch probably disagree with?
A.Epidemics will be less frequent thanks to climate change.
B.The world is becoming better prepared to deal with epidemics.
C.No single group can fight against the epidemics independently.
D.The increase in globalization may bring about more epidemics.
    D
Edward Wilson is America’s, if not the world’s, leading naturalist. In The Future of Life, he takes us on a tour of the world’s natural resources. How are they used? What has been lost? What remains and is it able to continue with the present speed of use? Wilson also points out the need to understand fully the biodiversity of our earth.
Wilson begins with an open letter to the pioneer in environment protection, Henry David Thoreau. He compares today’s Walden Pond with that of Thoreau’s day. Wilson will use such comparisons for the rest of the book. The problem is clear:man has done great damage to his home over the years. Can the earth, with human help, be made to return to biodiversity levels that will be able to support us in the future?
Biodiversity, Wilson argues, is the key to settling many problems the earth faces today. Even our agricultural crops can gain advantages from it. A mere hundred species are the basis of our food supply, of which but twenty carry the load. Wilson suggests changing this situation by looking into ten thousand species that could be made use of, which will be a way to reduce the clearing of the natural homes of plants and animals to enlarge farming areas.
At the end of the book, Wilson discusses the importance of human values in considering the environment. If you are to continue to live on the earth, you may as well read and act on the ideas in this book.
12.What does Wilson care most about?
A.The biodiversity of our earth. B.The environment for plants.
C.The wastes of natural resources. D.The importance of human values.
13.How many species are most important to our present food supply?
    A.Ten thousand. B.One hundred. C.Twenty. D.Eighty.
14.What does Wilson suggest to keep biodiversity?
A.Building homes for some dying species.
    B.Using more species for food.
    C.Learning how to farm scientifically.
D.Making it clear what to eat.
15.What do you think the text is?
A.An introduction to a scientist. B.A description of natural resources.
C.A research report. D.A book review.

It was not uncommon to see a person like me in an amusement park, who held purses, cellphones and sunglasses while others enjoyed themselves riding roller coasters. I admitted their courage, but refused to challenge myself.
One day when we were at the Happy Amusement Park in Seattle, my friends tried to get me to ride a roller coaster. But the click, click, click of the cars climbing up the tracks made me scared. The stop at the top, before falling with people's screams, seemed terrible.
My friends were still trying to persuade me, and I was saying no as usual, when I suddenly saw a familiar face, one I had never seen in real life. It was Raine, a popular young tennis star at the top of her game, who was my heroine. I pulled out a pen and the only paper that I could find and walked to her.
She was making her way through a rope that led to a ride called the Loudest Scream. I was running fast because I didn't want to miss the chance to meet her face to face, but I was also a bit nervous. So I waited at the exit to calm down and get closer to her as she came off the ride.
Several minutes later, she got out from the exit, laughing and talking with her brother. I focused on her walking toward me. She walked past. It was more difficult to talk to a star than I thought, but I had to take the chance. I called her name, not very confidently, but more like a question, “Raine?” She turned around. Our eyes actually met. “Would you mind signing for me?” I asked, handing the pen and paper toward her. Her hand wrote over the paper and she said, “You are the first person who has recognized me in the park so let's take a roller coaster together.”
    Paragraph 1:
Her warm invitation actually filled me with mixed feelings.

    Paragraph 2:
My friend came up and asked, “Are you sure you will take the Loudest Scream?”

    47.One possible version:
Her warm invitation actually filled me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I felt extremely excited that I was the only fan who got the priceless opportunity. I admired Raine very much and was eager to stay with her a little longer. On the other hand, I was scared of riding a roller coaster. The thought of having a try nearly pushed me to the verge of collapse. However, I must take the chance and it didn’t take much time to make my final decision. Mustering my courage, I nodded firmly and went to the roller coaster with her.
My friend came up and asked, “Are you sure you will take the Loudest Scream?” “Yes,” I answered without hesitation. She was rather surprised, with her mouth open and eyes widened. After all, she had spent years trying to persuade me but in vain. Fears of heights and moving too fast seemed unimportant to me now. Although I screamed during the entire time like a girl being chased by a hungry wolf, spending a good time with my idol made all of it worthwhile and my fear was miraculously overcome. And since then, I have lived in a world where I am a bit braver.

①抓住机会:take the chance / seize the opportunity
②做最后的决定:make my final decision / make up one’s mind finally
