Wildlife of Madagascar
Put yourself in Madagascar’s rich and unique ecosystems, seeing animals including these not found in the wild anywhere else in the world.
Day 1: Arrive into Antananarivo
On arrival, drive to the Relais des Plateaux Hotel and enjoy an evening meal. The name Antananarivo means “City of the Thousand”, referring to the 1,000 Merina tribe soldiers used by a king as protection of his city. More familiarly, it is known as Tana. Split into two parts (upper and lower towns), it is full of colourful markets, ancient stone steps and historical sites.
Day 2: Antananarivo: Andasibe
Head for Andasibe National Park. This 4-hour journey is an adventure, with the drive taking in huge mountain highlands and traditional Merina villages, with rice fields stretching away into the distance.
Andasibe is one of Madagascar’s most popular wildlife parks and offers great opportunities to see some of the country’s excellent wildlife, including the unique indri (大狐猴). The pack’s popularity is reflected in the high-quality accommodation and guiding available.
After lunch, venture into Andasibe National Park for the first time. It is one of the best places to see the largest lemur—the indri.
Day 3: Mantadia
Head out early for a tour of Montadia National Park, mainly covered by towering primary forest, which is sadly becoming less and less in Madagascar. Ranging in altitude from 800 to 1,260 metres, the park has a great variety of species and some good paths with beautiful views across the forest.
Day 4: Mantadia to Kirindy
Drive to the airport for a flight to Morondava, followed by a road trip to Kirindy via a stop at the iconic Avenue of Baobabs, where ancient baobabs (a kind of tree) line either side of the road. Check into Relais du Kirindy, and take a night walk in search of night-time wildlife.
1. What make Andasibe National Park popular?
A. Its rice fields. B. Its good service.
C. Its historical sites. D. Its unique location.
2. Which may bring a feeling of unhappiness?
A. The ancient baobabs in Kirindy. B. The traditional villages near Andasibe.
C. The primary forest in Mantadia. D. The Relais des Plateaux Hotel in Antananarivo.
3. On which night are visitors likely to come across wildlife?
A. The night of Day 1. B. The night of Day 2.
C. The night of Day 3. D. The night of Day 4.
根据Day 2: Antananarivo: Andasibe的“The pack’s popularity is reflected in the high-quality accommodation and guiding available.(旅行团的受欢迎程度反映在高质量的住宿和导游服务上)”可知,让Andasibe National Park受欢迎的是其良好的服务,故选B。
根据Day 3: Mantadia部分的“Head out early for a tour of Montadia National Park, mainly covered by towering primary forest, which is sadly becoming less and less in Madagascar.(早早出发前往蒙塔迪亚国家公园,主要被高耸的原始森林覆盖,遗憾的是,在马达加斯加,原始森林越来越少)”可知,可能会带来不愉快的感觉的是Mantadia的原始森林,故选C。
根据Day 4: Mantadia to Kirindy的“Check into Relais du Kirindy, and take a night walk in search of night-time wildlife.(入住Relais du Kirindy,在夜间散步,寻找夜间野生动物)”可知,第四天的晚上可能会遇到野生动物,故选D。
B
It is early 5:30 a. m. I am seated in a restaurant near my gate, considering breakfast. You are seated at the bar. I hear the waitress tell you that she is forbidden to serve alcohol until 6 a. m. You look at your watches and say you’ll wait.
Then a young girl appears and sits between the two of you. From the way you interact, I guess that she is your daughter. I watch her spin on the bar stool. Then she jumps up and enters a newsstand. In a few minutes, she returns with a purchase. You check your watches. I watch your daughter put her head down on the bar for a few moments. At 6:00, the waitress ceremoniously serves you beer. Your daughter twirls again.
And then I wonder judgmentally “What is going on here? What are you doing here at a bar at 6:00 a.m. with your young daughter at your side?” My next thought, in an effort to be more charitable, is “What happened that made you want to drink at a time and in a way that would likely raise a lot of eyebrows?”
Adults, of course, are free to do as they choose. But you are here with your young daughter. Has it crossed your mind that you are quite possibly influencing her future drinking behavior?
For better or worse, many life lessons are “caught” rather than taught. Kids have a way of learning the things we never get around to talking about with them—and they learn from watching us. From the time they learn to walk, our children are observing and imitating us. The truth is that the best way to teach children any healthy behavior is to model it ourselves.
To the parents at the bar, look into the mirror hanging over that bar and try to see what I see—a beautiful young girl, watching you and looking for clues on how to best live her adult life. You are her most influential teachers. Teach her well.
4 What do the parents do in the early morning?
A. Drink beer. B. Have breakfast. C. Wait for a friend. D. Play with their kid.
5. What does the underlined part “raise a lot of eyebrows” in the text mean?
A. Cheer others up. B. Waste much time. C. Shock many people. D. Make one feel better.
6. What is the author’s attitude towards the girl?
A. Worried. B. Tolerant. C. Admiring. D. Disapproving.
7. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To thank a family. B. To praise a pretty girl.
C. To tell an interesting story. D. To criticize a girl’s parents.
A 5. C 6. A 7. D

You are her most influential teachers. Teach her well.
C
Make Up Your Mind to Succeed
Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s a winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”
Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:
A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic - you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it is quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.
On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it is quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.
We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck's book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.
8. What does the author think about the generation born between 1980 and 2001?________________.
A. They don’t do well at school.
B. They are often misunderstood.
C. They are eager to win in sports.
D. They are given too much praise.
9. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who______________.
A. doesn’t want to work hard
B. cares a lot about personal safety
C. cannot share his ideas with others
D. can succeed with the help of teachers
10. What does the growth mind-set believe?____________________ .
A. Admitting failure is shameful.
B Talent comes with one’s birth.
C. Scores should be highly valued.
D. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.
11. What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study?______________.
A. Encourage them to learn from failures.
B. Prevent them from making mistakes.
C. Guide them in doing little things.
D. Help them grow with praise.
D 9. A 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.””(因此,斯坦福大学教授 Carol Dweck 博士,称他们为”被过度表扬的一代”。)
根据第三段“The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, ifs quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.”(这种固定的思维模式认为不用多大努力就能成功,并把失败看作是个人的耻辱。 故选A。
根据第四段“Because the ego isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it is quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.”( 因为自我意识不那么重要,成长的心态认为失败是一种机会,而不是羞耻。
We are all born with growth mind-sets. D
If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly first. These are the words of Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm. Joel’s opinion is that we’ve all grown up with the expression “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” Personally, I grew up hearing it as “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.” Yet, as Joel says, nobody does it right the first time. Joel explained that it’s this kind of thinking that prevents us from innovating(创新) in our own lives. We’re frightened to death to try new things, because we think we have to get it right the first time.
This is an innovative farmer’s wisdom. It resonates(和……类似) well with what I’ve learned from master teachers as well as with research on perfectionism. Let me speak briefly of both of these.
I have been fortunate to have a number of mentors(导师) in my development as a teacher. One of my favorites is a retired biology teacher from the University of British Columbia, Lee Gass. Lee explained to me that it’s not until we know that we don’t know, it’s not until we admit our ignorance, even celebrate our ignorance, that we can learn anything at all!
When we learn to see that it is through admitting our ignorance and trying even though it won’t be perfect or even “right” the first time that we can learn anything, we really start living.
Some of the research stresses the harm of not taking this attitude in our pursuit(追求). Perfectionism is often said to be the enemy of the good. It’s also the enemy of even trying.
I for one take this farmer’s advice to heart. I do try my best to do things as well as I possibly can, but I recognize that it’s the creative process where we learn, if we stay at it long enough. If a job is worth doing, it’ s worth doing poorly first.
12. What is Joel’s opinion about a job that is worth doing?
A. It is worth trying. B. It is worth doing well.
C. It is worth doing right. D. It is worth completing.
13. What do Joel and Lee have in common?
A. Both of them are ignorant. B. Both of them do a poor job.
C. Both of them love their jobs. D. Both of them value ignorance.
14. What is the finding of some of the research according to the text?
A. It’s impossible to be perfect.
B. It’s harmful to change your goal.
C. It’s dangerous to seek perfection.
D. It’s easy to become the enemy of the good.
15. What does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A. The value of creation. B. The benefit of learning.
C. The meaning of freedom. D. The importance of a process.
A 13. D 14. C 15. D
根据文章第一段内容“If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing poorly first. These are the words of Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm. Joel’s opinion is that we’ve all grown up with the expression ‘if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.’(如果一份工作值得做,那就先把它做好。这是来自波利法斯农场的乔尔·萨拉廷的话。乔尔的观点是,我们都是听着这样的说法长大的:“如果一件事值得做,那它就值得做对。”)”以及“Joel explained that it’s this kind of thinking that prevents us from innovating in our own lives.(乔尔解释说,正是这种想法阻碍了我们在自己的生活中创新。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第三段内容“One of my favorites is a retired biology teacher from the University of British Columbia, Lee Gass. Lee explained to me that it’s not until we know that we don’t know, it’s not until we admit our ignorance, even celebrate our ignorance, that we can learn anything at all!(我最喜欢的人之一是英属哥伦比亚大学的退休生物老师李·加斯。李向我解释说,直到我们知道自己不知道,直到我们承认自己的无知,甚至庆祝自己的无知,我们才能学到任何东西!)”可知,李的看法是要承认自己的无知才能学到东西;文章第一段内容“Joel explained that it’s this kind of thinking that prevents us from innovating in our own lives. We’re frightened to death to try new things, because we think we have to get it right the first time. (乔尔解释说,正是这种想法阻碍了我们在自己的生活中创新。我们害怕尝试新事物,因为我们认为我们必须在第一次就把它做好。)”则提及乔尔认为做事情不会第一次就能做对,需要创新,去尝试自己所不知道的,与李所认为的承认自己的无知是等同的。由此可推知,他们都重视无知。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段内容“Some of the research stresses the harm of not taking this attitude in our pursuit. Perfectionism is often said to be the enemy of the good. It’s also the enemy of even trying.(一些研究强调,在我们的追求中不采取这种态度是有害的。
Should you listen to music when you work? Some will say they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they cannot work effectively with music playing in the background. ____16____ It just depends on what sort of work you’re doing.
In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab with a variety of tasks. They included an easy task — searching through word lists and crossing out words containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task — memorizing word pairs and recalling the partner to each word. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, whereas others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instrumental tracks. ____17____
We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed about the same on the easy task. ____18____ Contrarily, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn’t listen to any music.
____19____ Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we might be less engaged during easier tasks, there’s a greater risk of drifting off to sleep. Music might give us the extra boost we need to get refreshed. ____20____ Listening to music can become overkill So we have to strike a balance between the type of music and the type of task.
A. What should we make of these findings?
B. Several key findings emerged from our study.
C. However, difficult tasks already demand a lot of our mental resources.
D. Our research has found that the effects of work may depend on our personalities.
E. We want to develop a more comprehensive framework that could be applied broader.
F. However, participants who listened to complex music performed best on the easy task.
G. Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these perspectives can be true.
G 17. B 18. F 19. A 20. C
根据前文“Some will say they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they cannot work effectively with music playing in the background.(有些人会说他们喜欢它,声称它能提高他们的表现;其他人会说他们不能在背景音乐的情况下有效地工作。)”和后文“It just depends on what sort of work you’re doing.(这要看你在做什么工作了。)” G“Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these perspectives can be true.(有趣的是,我们的研究发现,这两种观点都可能是正确的。)”
结合上下两段,题干前文“In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab with a variety of tasks. They included an easy task — searching through word lists and crossing out words containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task — memorizing word pairs and recalling the partner to each word. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, whereas others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instrumental tracks”主要介绍了实验参照组之间的区别还有实验流程,后段就开始阐述实验发现,可见题干肯定是总结实验获得了收获。 B“Several key findings emerged from our study. (我们的研究得出了几个关键的发现。)”符合上下文语境。故选B。
【18题详解】
结合前后文,该段肯定在说不同参照组的实验结果。根据前句“We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed about the same on the easy task.(我们发现,听简单音乐或不听音乐的参与者在简单任务上的表现都差不多。)”和后句“Contrarily, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn’t listen to any music.( 相反,与没听音乐的人相比,听音乐的人在更难的任务上表现得更差,不管音乐的复杂性或音量大小。)” F“However, participants who listened to complex music performed best on the easy task. (然而,听复杂音乐的参与者在简单任务上表现最好。)”符合上下文语境。故选F。
【19题详解】
结合题干后文“Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower.” A“What should we make of these findings? (我们应该如何理解这些发现?)”符合上下文语境。故选A。
根据后文“Listening to music can become overkill (过犹不及). So we have to strike a balance between the type of music and the type of task.(听音乐可能会变得过犹不及。所以我们必须在音乐类型和任务类型之间取得平衡。)”可知,复杂任务不适合听音乐,因为复杂任务本身就需要精神力消耗。所以选择项C“However, difficult tasks already demand a lot of our mental resources. (然而,困难的任务已经需要我们大量的精神资源。)”符合上下文语境。故选C。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.
There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son should never learn to read and to write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.
Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire about his dog, which was missing. He found the little boy, whose name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No. I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them.”
“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy said Charles.” I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that.”
“My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and to write.”
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. They told him it was what they wished above all things.
So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles did not always amuse himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

The moment the gentleman left, Mr. Rose went in search of his son. He went to the river, and walked up and down, in hope of seeing the boat. Not seeing it, he grew uneasy. He thought Charles must have gone a long way off. Unwilling to leave without learning something of him, he went to the hut. He put his head in at the window, which was open. There a pleasant sight met his eyes. Charles was at the table, ruling a copybook Joe was reading to him, while his mother was spinning in the corner. Charles was a little confused. He feared his father might not be pleased; but he had no need to be uneasy, for his father was delighted.
The next day, his father took him to town, and gave him books for himself and Joe, with writing paper, pens, and ink. Charles was the happiest boy in the world when he came home. He ran to Joe, his hands filled with parcels, and his heart beating with joy.
