I am a person who loves reading in English. For me, it is easy to get lost in a book and return to the real world a couple of hours later. You may wonder it is hard for you, but how did I do it successfully?

At first, reading is a process in which you need your enthusiasm( 热情) no matter how old you are. As a 6-year-old child, I could read Harry Potter in English. Now, as a student, it is harder for me to find the time to read books for pleasure. However, I look forward to reading my favorite books. Growing up,I found spelling was not difficult for me and I had a wide vocabulary. This is something I benefited from reading at such a young age.

My second method is to read the books that you have often read in English. Reading fictions is especially a great way of improving your vocabulary as you are wrapped up(全神贯注) in the story line. It is easy to follow the story in English even if you don't understand some sentences.

The last important point is that it is not necessary to understand absolutely every word. If you understand the meaning of the sentence, each word is not necessarily important. Sometimes it is impossible to translate directly from one language to another. If a word is used several times in a text, you can get your own meaning from it and it makes much more sense than you try to look it up and translate it in the first place.

If you like reading as you like delicious food, the matter will be easier and you will open up a whole world of literature you never knew!

5.The author likes reading books        .

    A.in English B.in Chinese C.in Spanish D.in Japanese

6.The underlined word “absolutely” means “     ”in Chinese.

    A.不断地 B.慢慢地 C.细心地 D.完全地

7.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.The author is very good at reading English books.

B.Reading fictions can make it easy to follow the story.

C.The author has benefited a lot from reading.

D.It's meaningless to guess the meaning of words from a text.

    8.The passage mainly tells us________.

A.a brief introduction of Harry Potter    B.how to be a good English reader

C.how to translate quickly and correctly   D.reading can improve your vocabulary

    C

Parents are the closest people to you in the world. They love you just because you are you. And they would do anything for you.

Like a lot of middle school students, Zhuang Shuxia has her problem. She and her parents don't get on well. “I really want to be my daddy's little girl. But he just doesn't understand. He speaks to me but doesn't listen to me,” said Zhuang, a Junior 3 student in Hebei. Of course, lots of kids feel that way. But you and your parents will be much happier if you can be friends. Why don't you take a walk and have a talk with your parents first? Here are some ways to have a good talk with them:

Find a good time to talk, like when you're having dinner, going out for a walk or watching TV.

Tell them something you're interested in, or ask them about their lives when they were young. They love to talk about it.

Listen to them carefully, and look them in the eye.

Be honest. Your parents will trust(信任)you more. And a trusting family is a happy family.

    9. Who are the closest people to us according to the passage?

    A. The people who love us.      B. The people who understand us.

    C. Our father and mother.       D. All the family members.

    10.Zhuang Shuxia's problem is

    A. her father doesn't think she works hard enough

    B. her father doesn't like to speak to her

    C. she really wants to be a big girl  D.she can't get on well with her parents

    11. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Your parents love you just because you are such a good child.

B.Children and their parents will be happier if they make friends with each other.

C.It is a good time for children to talk with their parents when having dinner.

D.Children can win their parents' trust if they are honest.

    D

"Long time no see." is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend's e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.

Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on Google. com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing "Long time no see." Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.

Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood movie makers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named "Charlie Chan" on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. "Long time no see." was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, "Long time no see." became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.

Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.

You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American's melting pot keeps adding richness and flavour.

    12. What did the writer himself feel surprised at?

    A. The Chinglish expression "Long time no see."

    B. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.

    C. "Long time no see." is used as a standard American English greeting.

    D. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.

    13. What do the underlined words "melting pot" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. Confucius's words.     B. Culture mixture.

    C. A kind of cooked dish.  D. American changing cultures.

    14. According to the passage, what can be inferred?

    A. Detectives translated the phrase "Long time no see."

    B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.

    C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.

    D. Hollywood made "Long time no see." popular.

    15. What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.

    B. You'll not be surprised at a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant in America.

    C. Some American expressions can be used in China.

    D. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.

    Family Matters

I think family is a place where we are loved the most and act the worst. Despite hardship striking us, family is always a warm harbor.

I remember the quarrel with my mother about using the mobile phone. After that, I have been thinking about how to deal with those conflicts. The reason for her anger was that she was afraid staring at the screen for a long time would harm my health. Now we can agree on the entire time I use the phone.

So I figure in family, it is not the problems but how to settle them that matters.
