Last summer, Katie Steller stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her car window. “Hey” She shouted. “I’m driving around giving free haircuts. If I go grab my chair, do you want one right now?” “No problem.” he said. “I’ll be right back.” Steller said. She drove off, went to the salon she owns, and loaded a red chair into her car. Then she drove back. The man, named Edward, took a seat, and she cut his curly (弯曲的) graying hair. After Steller was done, Edward looked in a mirror.“I look good!” he said.
To date, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts to people around the city. These clients are all living on the margins, and she is fully aware of the power of her cleanup job. “It’s more than a haircut.” she says.“I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people. I want to build relationships.”
Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. One changed hers: as a teen, she suffered from a disease called ulcerative colitis (溃疡性结肠炎) that was so severe and her hair thinned suddenly. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut. “To sit down and have somebody talk to me like a friend, it helped me feel cared about.” she says. After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology (美容) school in 2009, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project.
Steller listens to people’s stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet. The attention apparently works. When she was cutting a woman’s hair one day, someone drove by and yelled, “You look amazing!”
The woman in the chair smiled very happily.“I’m not unnoticed.” she shouted. “Look, people see me!” “The way you show up in the world matters.” says Steller. You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.
4. Steller gives haircuts to the people who________.
A. live on a farm B. live in the countryside
C. live on the margins of society D. live in small communities
5. What inspired Steller to start her Red Chair Project?
A. Her kindness to the poor. B. Her skill of doing hair.
C. Her fear of being alone. D. Her experience in illness.
6. How did the woman in the chair feel on hearing someone’s comments?
A. Awkward B. Cheerful C. Shocked D. Shy
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A The Power of Free Cuts. B. A Successful Salon Owner.
C. A Wonderful Free Salon. D. The Change of Life.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

People generally like to pick out the best-looking fruits and vegetables when shopping for produce(农产品), but Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and faulty produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.
A trial run of the ugly food line, named “Naturally Imperfect”, began with only apples and potatoes to choose from. Consumer demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more imperfect vegetables and fruits like onions and mushrooms.
All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let abnormal produce go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he was right, given how popular the line has become.
“It really went well beyond our expectation,” Branson said. “I think it really spoke to the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some choices.”
Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin deep, but they also recognize that they can get the same flavor and nutritional benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response(响应) to the first offering of apples and potatoes showed the chance to enlarge the line and offer more choices at a greater price to Canadian families.
“If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won’t look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store”, said Branson. “And nature doesn’t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if somebody were to take an apple from Naturally Imperfect, put it right beside a No. 1 apple, close his eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.”
8. Loblaws is different from other supermarkets in that _______.
A. more fruits are offered at lower prices B. normal-looking produce can’t be found there
C. imperfect produce is sold at lower prices there D. only apples and potatoes are sold every day
9. According to Paragraph 3, Loblaws’s program _______.
A. stops people from wasting their food B. happens to be a win-win situation
C. teaches food producers how to grow D. enables consumers to eat more fresh produce
10. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Canadians are used to eating perfect produce.
B. Smart consumers know the importance of ugly produce.
C. Loblaws intends to improve customers’ quality of life.
D. Customers’ support promotes the development of the ugly food line.
11. What do Branson’s words in the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. We should eat imperfect apples with our eyes closed.
B. The world is usually full of imperfect things.
C. Imperfect fruits are as tasty and nutritious as perfect ones.
D. The fruits grown by ourselves are more nutritious than those in the store.
C 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第五段“Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin deep, but they also recognize that they can get the same flavor and nutritional benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response(响应) to the first offering of apples and potatoes showed the chance to enlarge the line and offer more choices at a greater price to Canadian families.(当然,加拿大人知道美不只在于品相,他们也认识到,尽管外表不好看,他们也能得到同样的味道和营养价值。第一批苹果和土豆的积极反应表明,有机会扩大产品线,以更高的价格为加拿大家庭提供更多的选择)”可知,第五段主要讲了消费者对最初提供的苹果和土豆的积极响应,显示了扩大这一产品线的机会。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“And nature doesn’t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if somebody were to take an apple from Naturally Imperfect, put it right beside a No. 1 apple, close his eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.(大自然并不是事事都能完美生长。我想,如果有人从“自然不完美”中拿一个苹果,放在一个排名第一的苹果旁边,闭上眼睛吃,这不会有什么不同)”可知不完美的水果和完美的水果有一样的口感和营养价值,故选C。

In Washington, the US flag was lowered to half staff(半旗) to mark the passing of a queen whose legacy(遗产) US President Joe Biden said “will loom large(赫然出现) in the pages of British history, and in the story of our world”.
Her death was also marked in European cities. In Berlin, flowers and candles were laid outside the British Embassy(大使馆). In Paris, the Eiffel Tower went dark at the exact time of midnight in a tribute to the Queen.

上文“I have the same 24 hours in a day as you do, but 1 have made specific choice that allow me to make the most of every day and still feel happy and relaxed.( 我和你一样,每天都有24小时,但我做了具体的选择,让我充分利用每一天,仍然感到快乐和放松)”说明作者做出选择,充分利用每一天,但仍旧感到快乐和轻松,根据下文段落小标题可知,下文就如何充分利用每一天给出了建议,因此空格处应是承上启下,F项中的“help you make the most of your time”与上文“to make the most of every day”一致,“tips”引出下文的建议,因此F项“也许这些建议会帮助你充分利用你的时间”符合语境,承上启下。故选F。
根据段落标题“Pick the most important.”可知,本段建议挑选最重要的,下文“Focus on spending time that for you is fun and productive.( 把时间花在那些对你来说有趣和富有成效的事情上)”说明要挑选一些有趣的和富有成效的事情去做,D项中的“what is meaningful in your life”与标题中的“the most important”一致,下文是对“Make choices”具体解释。
上文“Many people go crazy trying to figure out how to spend time with friends, family, work, play, etc.( 许多人疯狂地试图弄清楚如何在朋友,家庭,工作,娱乐等方面度过时间)”说明许多人想要弄清楚在生活中如何分配好时间,下文“Find ways to enjoy them in a combined manner.( 找到一种结合的方式来享受它们)”说明可以把事情组合在一起享受,因此推断空格处与上文是转折关系,说明不要试图均衡时间,C项“不要试图在它们之间平衡时间”符合语境。
根据下文“You would think learning takes more time from you, but actually there are always new ways of doing things that can save you time on daily tasks, freeing you up for the most important. Always be looking for a new way to gain back an hour here or there. Always be looking for a new way to gain back an hour here or there. (你可能会认为学习需要花费了你更多的时间,但实际上总有一些新的方法可以为你节省出做日常事务的时间,为你腾出时间去做最重要的事情。寻找在这里或者那里赢回一个小时的新方法)”可推断,本段讲述学习虽然花费很多时间,但总是能有一些方法为你节省时间做其他事情,因此要做有效的学习者。因此推断B项“做有效的学习者”为段落标题,故选B。
【20题详解】
下文“Every completion is a small victory that adds up in a big way.( 每一次的完成都是一个小的胜利,累积起来就是一个大的胜利)”说明事情要一件一件去做,G项中的“making lists”与之呼应,因此推断G项“这就是为什么列清单在任何生产手册中都很重要的原因”符合语境,this指代上文“The world won't come to an end in most cases just because you left a few things undone. Celebrate progress and keep refining (改进) toward a happy productive existence.( 在大多数情况下,世界不会因为你没做完几件事而走向末日。庆祝进步,不断改进走向一个快乐而富有成效的存在)”解释了列出清单一件一件完成任务的原因。故选G。
