Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs have the mental capability to play video games. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs (Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory) to play a simple joystick (操纵杆) game with their noses, moving a cursor (光标) to four targets on the screen. Although the animals didn’t show the skills to win a round any time, they did show an understanding of some simple games. Performing well not by chance, the pigs appeared to recognize that the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well although they didn’t have flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers.
That pigs can do this should give us pause about what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may influence them,” said Purdue University’s Dr Candace Croney, the study’s lead author.
Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in it, “only encouraging words from the experimenter” would make the pigs continue their training.
These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence and learning abilities of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also shown how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands(口头命令).
As with any sentient (有感觉力的) beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them influences and matters to them. We therefore have a duty to further understand how pigs get information and what they are capable of learning and remembering, because this may help them understand their interactions with us and their environments.
    41. What can be learned from Paragraph 1?
    A. The pigs knew a lot about the video games.
    B. The pigs operated joysticks with their noses.
    C. The pigs competed with each other in the games.
    D. The pigs sometimes performed well by chance.
    42. What made researchers believe pigs socially interacted well?
    A. Their being inspired by human words.
    B. Their being driven by food.
    C. Their being willing to keep trying.
    D. Their being stopped by challenges.
    43. Which of the following statement is true according to the passage?
    A. Pigs can’t play video games for lack of flexible fingers.
    B. When playing games, pigs can win a round at any time.
    C. The research suggests that pigs are very friendly animals.
    D. When games are difficult, pigs are unwilling to play them.
    44. What’s the main idea of the passage?
    A. Pigs are the best animal gamers.
    B. Pigs play games with flexible noses.
    C. Pigs can be encouraged by food.
    D. Pigs have great learning capability.
    45. What will researchers probably focus on in the next stage of their experiment ?
    A. How pigs learn to play challenging games.
    B. How pigs improve their learning ability.
    C. How pigs manage to get information.
    D. How pigs adapt to their living environment.
    【答案】41. B 42. A 43. D 44. D 45. C

She released her breakup song Remember That Night? in November 2020. The post blew up, getting almost three million views in a matter of days.
Kays has loved singing since she was young. At 11, she got a guitar from her mother and then started to sing while playing. Gradually, people started asking her to play at restaurants and she also started to post some live videos on YouTube, gaining her more and more followers. Now, Kays has signed with a music company. In Kays’ eyes, people like her songs and videos because she writes about life experiences and emotions of the youth. “I just sing and share my feelings about divorced parents, body image, loneliness and mental health,” said Kays. “I want more people to know they’re not alone with the struggles in their lives.”

    第二节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
The Lomax family needed a dog. Though their house was already full with seven people, they knew a dog would truly make the house a home. So they settled on a dog whom they named Jack. It turned out to be the best decision they ever made.
It was Jack’s protective instinct(本能) that would save the lives of the Lomax family. If it wasn’t for him, the family may never have survived the terrible accident that would eventually befall one cold January day in 2020.
It was a night like many others. Autumn, the family’s youngest child and her mother Ashley had settled into bed in one of the bedrooms on the second floor. Jack, who rarely left Autumn’s side, had settled in there as well. Little did they know that something terrible was about to happen that night. While the family was fast asleep, a fire had started in one of the other second floor bedrooms. Jack had picked up a whiff (些微的气味) of smoke in the next room. In an instant, the brave dog jumped into action.
The four-legged family member knew something was wrong but had no way of telling his owners. He jumped up Ashley’s bed and began touching her face. She pushed him off her bed and tried to roll over but he began again, until she was up.
As soon as she could, Ashley took hold of Autumn and began to move away from the door. She screamed at the top of her lungs as she ran from the room, alerting the rest of the family to the disaster that was taking place. Jack did his part again too, barking loudly. Ashley’s screams woke the four other adults and two more children. All of them headed out into the cold January night. In no time, the fire had engulfed (吞没) nearly the entire home, but luckily, all of them had made it out alive, with Jack leading the way.
    61. Why did the Lomax family raise a dog? (No more than 15 words)
    62. What does the underlined word mean in the 2nd paragraph? (No more than 3 words)
    63. Which floor did Jack sleep? (No more than 5 words)
    64. What did Jack do when he sensed something wrong? (No more than 10 words)
    65. What do you think of Jack? Please explain? (No more than 20 words)
【答案】61. Because they thought a dog would truly make the house a home. Or: Because they thought the house has a homely feel with a dog in it.
    62. Happen / Occur / Break out / Come about
    63. On the second floor.
    64. He jumped on Ashley’s bed and began touching her face. Or: He managed to wake up the family members, who then escaped from the fire safely.
    65. He is brave, clever and loyal. When the fire happened, he didn’t run away, but saved the family in his way.
    【解析】

Or: Because they thought the house has a homely feel with a dog in it.
    【62题详解】
考查词义猜测。根据第二段中“If it wasn’t for him, the family may never have survived the terrible accident that would eventually befall one cold January day in 2020.”(如果没有他,这个家庭可能永远无法在这场最终会befall在2020年1月寒冷的一天的可怕事故中幸存下来)可知,that指代上文的the terrible accident,“事故”通常是“发生”,由此推知划线词befall应该是“发生”的意思,故答案为Happen / Occur / Break out / Come about.
    【63题详解】
考查细节理解。根据第三段中“It was a night like many others. Autumn, the family’s youngest child and her mother Ashley had settled into bed in one of the bedrooms on the second floor.”(这是一个和其他许多夜晚一样的夜晚。秋天,家里最小的孩子和她的母亲阿什利在二楼的一间卧室里安顿下来)可知,Jack睡在二楼,故答案为On the second floor.
    【64题详解】

Or: He managed to wake up the family members, who then escaped from the fire safely.
    【65题详解】

She pushed him off her bed and tried to roll over but he began again, until she was up.”(他跳上艾希礼的床,开始摸她的脸。她把他推下床,想翻身,但他又开始了,直到她起来)和第五段中“In no time, the fire had engulfed (吞没) nearly the entire home, but luckily, all of them had made it out alive, with Jack leading the way.”(没过多久,大火几乎吞没了整个房子,但幸运的是,他们都活着逃了出来,杰克在前面带路)推知,火灾发生时,Jack很勇敢、很聪明地救了主人一家,故答案为He is brave, clever and loyal. When the fire happened, he didn’t run away, but saved the family in his way.
