When I was eight, I got my first pair of glasses. Far from being made fun of at school, the only struggle I got was endless requests to try on my new glasses. Hearing about what happened at school, my father once looked at me and asked whether I had pretended to be the blindness just to look like Harry Potter?
With my strange hair and glasses, I did nothing to avoid it, either. The Harry Potter books were the
great pop cultural event of my generation, who began reading again. My school librarian, both confused
and annoyed by us Potter fans, dealt with fights over the schools few old copies by setting a new rule: Harry Potter could be borrowed for only three days, instead of the whole week of borrowing period every other title was allowed.
In the 20 years since the first book arrived on shelves, publishers and parents have been asking what
has made J.K. Rowling’s books so loved. It is better to look at the influence they have had on their readers. Yes, the books were about a boy taking on a dark and powerful enemy in the magical world, but they were also about love defeating hate, determination and choosing “between what is easy and what is right”. Rowling’s entire magical characters were all people we want to be.
I grew up with Harry and together we became children with our own opinions, teens easy to get
angry and young adults thinking of everything as normal. When the final book came out in 2007, I read it
for 12 hours without a break and cried as I finished it. I felt something sad: the end of Harry’s story
signaled the end of my childhood. I was suddenly aimless. Meanwhile, my now Potter-mad father walked impatiently nearby, waiting for the proper moment to take the book away from his daughter.
Harry Potter did shape my generation. As a girl who grew up mostly in peacetime, many of the ideas
I found in these books were ones we had never come across before. The magical world’s terrible treatment of non-human beings was the first description of slavery I knew. The treatment of Harry’s teacher Remus Lupin, who hides his condition at work, is a metaphor(比喻) for the shame surrounding those who suffer from AIDS. And all settings like this may have real-world reflections. A study found that teenage Harry Potter readers showed more tolerance towards those who were suffering. Is it possible that Jeremy Corbyn’s popularity among the young had anything to do with their literary education? Is it possible that Harry Potter, in the 20 years he has been with us, has inspired a generation to be more empathetic(感同身受), welcoming and socially open-minded than those before it? We will see. If not, at least my glasses are still cool.

For grown-ups, an afternoon snooze(打盹) is often easier said than done. But many of us have probably experienced just how simple it can be to catch some sleep in a gently rocking hammock(吊床). By examining brain waves in sleeping adults, researchers reported in the June 21 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, that they now have evidence to explain why that is.
“It is a common belief that rocking causes sleep: we fall asleep in a rocking chair soon and, since ancient times, we cradle our babies to sleep,” said Sophie Schwartz of the University of Geneva. “Yet, how this works had remained a mystery. The goal of our study was made up of two parts: to test whether rocking does indeed improve sleep, and to understand how this might work at the brain level.”
Schwartz, Michel Mühlethaler, and their colleagues Laurence Bayer and Irina Constantinescu asked
twelve adult volunteers to nap on a custom-made bed or “experimental hammock” that could either remain still or rock gently. All participants were good sleepers who didn’t typically nap and did not suffer from excessive sleepiness during the day. Each participant took two 45-minute afternoon naps, one with the bed still and one with the bed in motion, while their brain activity was monitored.
    - 7
“We observed a faster transition to sleep in each and every subject in the swinging condition,” Mühlethaler said. “Surprisingly, we also observed a dramatic boosting of certain types of sleep-related brain waves.”
More specifically, rocking increased the length of stage 2 sleep, a form of non-rapid eye movement
sleep that normally occupies about half of a good night’s sleep. The rocking bed also had a lasting effect on brain activity, increasing slow brain waves and bursts of activity known as sleep spindles(纺锤体).
Schwartz and Mühlethaler say the next step is to find out whether rocking can improve longer periods
of sleep and to find out whether it may be useful for the treatment of sleep disorders, such as insomnia(失 眠).
    62. What does the June 21 issue of Current Biology tell us according to Paragraph 1?
    A. It is more difficult for grown-ups to fall asleep.
    B. People today like to sleep in a rocking hammock.
    C. There comes the evidence to explain why rocking benefits people’s sleep.
    D. Many people nowadays suffer from excessive sleepiness.
    63. What can we learn from Sophie Schwartz’s words?
    A. The study is going to benefit babies a lot.
    B. Her team aimed to answer two questions.
    C. The study had been kept secret before finished.
    D. People used to believe rocking was bad for sleep.
    64. What finding was beyond the researchers’ expectation?
    A. All the participants fell asleep faster in the swinging condition.
    B. Some participants couldn't fall asleep in the swinging condition.
    C. The rocking seemed to improve participants’ sleep quality.
    D. Participants had a tendency to sleep excessively in the swinging bed.
    65. What do Schwartz and Mühlethaler expect to figure out in the next research?
    A. Whether swing can cause insomnia.
    B. Whether swing can change brain waves.
    C. Whether swing can benefit memory consolidation.
    D. Whether swing can extend sleep time.
    66. A suitable title for this passage would probably be _________
    A. Take a snooze. Easier said than done.
    B. Need a nap? Find yourself a hammock.
    C. Want a faster sleep? Change your sleeping habits.
    D. Suffer from sleep disorders? New treatment found.
    D
On Wednesday, two things happened. In Syria, 80 people were killed by government airstrikes. Meanwhile, in Florida, Elon Musk’s SpaceX successfully launched and fired a sports car into space. Guess which story has dominated mainstream news sites?
The launch of Musk’s Falcon Heavy rocket, the most powerful ever launched by a private company,
went off successfully. Musk sent his cherry-red Tesla roadster running toward Mars, launching “a new
    - 8
space age”. The event attracted phenomenal publicity and made the rocket launch a masterstroke of advertising for Tesla.
Meanwhile, in Syria, where hundreds of thousands of refugees(难民) may be forced to return to
unsafe homes, a UN human rights coordinator for Syria said despondently(沮丧地) that he was no longer sure why he bothers to videotape the effects of bombing, since nobody ever pays attention. He wondered what level of violence it would take to make the world care.
There is, perhaps, no better way to appreciate the tragedy of 21st-century global inequality than by
watching a billionaire spend $90m launching a $100,000 car into space.
Musk said he wanted to participate in a space race because “races are exciting” and that while strapping his car to a rocket may be “silly and fun … silly and fun things are important”. Thus, anyone who mentions the huge waste the project involves, or the various social uses to which these resources could be put, can be dismissed as a killjoy.
But one doesn’t have to hate fun to question the justification for pursuing a costly new space race at
exactly this moment. If we examine the situation honestly, it becomes hard to defend a project like this.
A mission to Mars does indeed sound exciting, but it’s important to have our priorities straight. First, perhaps we could make it so that a child no longer dies of malaria every two minutes. Or we could try to address the level of poverty in Alabama which has become so extreme that the UN investigator did not
believe it could occur in a first-world country. Perhaps when violence, poverty and disease are solved,
then we can head for the stars.
Many might think that what Elon Musk chooses to do with his billions is Elon Musk’s business alone.
If he wanted to spend all his money on medicine for children, that would be nice, but if he’d like to spend it making big explosions and sending his convertible on a million-mile space voyage, that’s his right.
But Musk is only rich enough to afford these money-consuming projects because we have allowed
social inequalities to arise in the first place. If wealth were actually distributed fairly in this country, nobody would be in a position to fund his own private space program.
Elon Musk is right: silly and fun things are important. But some of them are an indefensible waste of
resources. While there are still humanitarian crises such as that in Syria, nobody can justify vast spending on rocketry experiments.
    67. Why does the writer mention the two pieces of news at the beginning of the passage?
    A. To illustrate the inequality of wealth distribution and the consequent inequality of attention distribution.
    B. To highlight the significance of SpaceX’s successful launch of a rocket and a car into space.
    C. To appeal to the government for more attention to the air strikes and refugee crisis in Syria.
    D. To find out which news dominated the mainstream news sites.
    68. Why did the UN human rights coordinator for Syria feel disappointed?
    A. Because nobody appreciated his work and all the efforts he made.
    B. Because the violence in Syria is not serious enough to make the world care.
    C. Because however hard he tried, nobody seemed to care about the situation in Syria.
    D. Because he had great difficulty videotaping the effects of bombing.
    - 9
    69. What is implied in Paragraph 6 and 7?
    A. The space project of SpaceX cost the government too much money.
    B. It kills the fun to question the justification of the pursuit of space programs.
    C. Space programs are a waste of money that cannot be justified.
    D. Addressing problems of violence, poverty and diseases should be our top priority.
    70. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
    A. We should pay equal attention to space projects and solving social problems.
    B. No private companies should be allowed to spend money in rocketry experiments.
    C. The money and resources used in space projects could have been used to deal with various social problems.
    D. Elon Musk should be blamed for misleading the public.

When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from school and that
was if I had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a stomachache or a mild fever --- but
not me… I had to be dying in order to stay home. By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents used to say that they were teaching me how to have a good work ethic(职业道德). I didn’t understand the connection until last week.
The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining to his friend
about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in life was to make movies, but he wouldn’t pursue it because he had no clue if he could make enough money and he didn’t want to waste time because it would take years to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks by borrowing money because he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His friend agreed with him and said, “The stock is good because you can make tons of money and only work for a short time.”
I think they were indulging(沉溺) in the wildest fantasy. Many people these days don’t realize that
when things seem to happen immediately, it is only because a lot of effort, determination and time have
gone into them and it isn’t due to some miraculous(不可思议的) event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There is no excuse for laziness.
Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten years old and
    watching the television show Fame.
In the show the dance teacher told her students, “If you want fame, fame costs and here’s how you
start paying for it … in sweat.” Every time we watched that show, my dad would proudly say how right the teacher was because in order to succeed you have to work hard.
