    Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
    (A)
When I was growing up, my family kept chickens. We always had about a dozen of them at any given time and whenever one died off—taken away by hawk or fox or by some obscure chicken illness—my father would replace the lost hen.
He’d drive to a nearby poultry farm and return with a new chicken in a sack. The thing is, you must be very careful when introducing a new chicken to the general flock. You can’t just toss it in there with the old chickens, or they will see it as an invader. What you must do instead is to slip the new bird into the chicken coop in the middle of the night while the others are asleep. Place her on a roost beside the flock and tiptoe away. In the morning, when the chickens wake up, they don’t notice the newcomer, thinking only, “She must have been here all the time since I didn’t see her arrive.” The clincher of it is, awaking within this flock, the newcomer herself doesn’t even remember that she’s a newcomer, thinking only, “I must have been here the whole time...”
My arrival in India does likewise.
My plane lands in Mumbai around 1:30 AM. It is December 30. I find my luggage, then find the taxi that will take me hours and hours out of the city to the Ashram, located in a remote rural village. I doze on the drive through nighttime India, sometimes waking to look out the window, where I can see strange haunted shapes of thin women in saris walking alongside the road with bundles of firewood on their heads. At this hour? Buses with no headlights pass us, and we pass oxcarts. The banyan trees spread their elegant roots throughout the ditches.

    A. 8:00PM. B. 1:00AM. C. 7:00A.M. D. 3:00P.M.
    58. What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean?
    A. shelter B. group C. farm D. chicken

由第一段“When I was growing up, my family kept chickens. We always had about a dozen of them at any given time and whenever one died off—taken away by hawk or fox or by some obscure chicken illness—my father would replace the lost hen. (在我成长的过程中,我家养鸡。在任何特定的时间,我们总是有十几只母鸡,每当有一只被鹰或狐狸或某种不明原因的鸡病夺走,我父亲就会替换掉这只没了的鸡)”可知,第一段讲“作者家会替换没了的那只鸡”,正好引出第二段“作者家会带回一只小鸡,并如何帮助新鸡融入鸡群的故事”,可得出第一段的作用是引出其他段落。故选C项。
    【57题详解】
细节理解题。由第四段中的“My plane lands in Mumbai around 1:30 AM. (我的飞机在凌晨1:30左右降落在孟买)”可知,作者可能是1:00AM左右到达印度的。故选B项。
    【58题详解】
词句猜测题。由第二段中的“You can’t just toss it in there with the old chickens, or they will see it as an invader. What you must do instead is to slip the new bird into the chicken coop in the middle of the night while the others are asleep. Place her on a roost beside the flock and tiptoe away.
由最后一段中的“then find the taxi that will take me hours and hours out of the city to the Ashram, located in a remote rural village. I doze on the drive through nighttime India, sometimes waking to look out the window (然后找到了一辆出租车,这辆出租车将带我离开城市数小时,前往位于偏远乡村的Ashram。我在驱车穿越印度的夜间路上打瞌睡,有时醒来向窗外望去)”可知,“作者在出租车上小睡了一会儿”正确。故选A项。
    (B)
USING YOUR SCORPIO COOKER: USEFUL HINTS
Follow these useful hints to obtain the best results when using your new SCORPIO cooker.
    Choice of burner
Use a large burner to bring liquids to the boil quickly, and use a small one for stewed dishes and sauces.
To conserve gas, place the pan centrally over the burner and adjust the flame so that it does not extend past the edges of the pan.
Do not boil food too rapidly. A strong boil does not cook any faster but violently shakes up the food, which may then lose its taste.

flame too high — wastes gas flame not past edges of pan — conserves gas
    Utensils
All normally available utensils (aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic, etc.) may be used on your new gas cooker, but ensure that they are steady, in order to avoid dangerous spill-over of hot liquids.
    Caution: Large Utensils
When a cooker is installed close to a worktop, ensure that whenever large utensils are used, they are placed so that they do not overhand the side of hotplate, as this may cause scorching or charring of the worktop surface.
    Oven
There is a gradual change in temperature between the bottom and top of the oven. The first, or bottom, shelf position is the coolest and the fourth, or top, shelf position is the hottest. Because of the temperature change from one shelf position to another, it is possible to cook various dishes which require different temperatures, at the same time. As a rough guide, the temperature change from one shelf to the next is about ten degrees Celsius.
Some recipes do not refer directly to temperature but use descriptions such as “slow”, “moderate”, “hot” etc. when using such recipes, the following chart may be taken as a guide:
    OVEN TEMPERATURES
    slow:
    110℃
    warm:
    130℃
    moderate:
    150℃
    moderately hot:
    180℃
    hot:
    220℃
    very hot:
    250℃
If preheating is required, allow time for the oven to reach the set temperature. The following table may be used as a guide:
    PREHEATING
    3 minutes:
    120℃
    6 minutes:
    180℃
    10 minutes:
    250℃
Note that the oven light (where fitted) is located on the splash back.
    Storage drawer (where fitted)
The storage drawer situated underneath the oven is designed for the storage of pans and utensils. Do not place plastic utensils or flammable material in this drawer. To remove the drawer, withdraw it to the fully open position. Then lift it dear of the stops. To refit the drawer, locate the nylon drawer slides on the slide tracks. Lift the drawer slightly to clear the stops, then slide it to the fully shut position.
    60. How do you conserve gas when using a Scorpio cooker?
    A. Make the flame as high as possible. B. Shake up the food.
    C. Keep the flame not past the pan edges. D. Make a strong boil.
    61. If you want to stew beef, you should________.
    A. use a large utensil B. use a small burner
    C. cook it faster D. use a utensil made of stainless steel
    62. What can we put in the storage drawer underneath the oven?
    A. Pans and plastic utensils. B. Pans and non-flammable material.
    C. Utensils and flammable material. D. Pans and various dishes.

    (C)
Facing water shortages and escalating fertilizer costs, farmers in developing countries are using raw sewage to irrigate and fertilize nearly 49 million acres of cropland, according to a new report — and it may not be a bad thing.
While the practice carries serious health risks for many, those dangers are outweighed by the social and economic gains for poor urban farmers and consumers who need affordable food. “There is a large potential for wastewater agriculture to both help and hurt great numbers of urban consumers,” said Liqa Raschid-Sally, who led the study.
The report focused on poor urban areas, where farms in or near cities supply relatively inexpensive food. Most of these operations draw irrigation water from local rivers or lakes. Unlike developed cities, however, these areas lack advanced water-treatment facilities, and rivers effectively become sewers (下水道).
When this water is used for agricultural irrigation, farmers risk absorbing disease-causing bacteria, as do consumers who eat the produce raw and unwashed. Nearly 2.2 million people die each year because of diarrhea-related (与腹泻相关的) diseases, according to WHO statistics. More than 80% of those cases can be attributed to contact with contaminated water and a lack of proper sanitation. But Pay Drechsel, an environmental scientist, argues that the social and economic benefits of using untreated human waste to grow food outweigh the health risks.
Those dangers can be addressed with farmer and consumer education, he said, while the free water and nutrients from human waste can help urban farmers in developing countries to escape poverty.
Agriculture is a water-intensive business, accounting for nearly 70% of global fresh water consumption.
In poor, dry regions, untreated wastewater is the only viable irrigation source to keep farmers in business. In some cases, water is so scarce that farmers break open sewage pipes transporting waste to local rivers.
Irrigation is the primary agricultural use of human waste in the developing world. But frequently untreated human waste harvested from lavatories is delivered to farms and spread as fertilizer.
In most cases, the human waste is used on grain crops, which are eventually cooked, minimizing the risk of transmitting water-borne diseases. With fertilizer prices jumping nearly 50% per metric ton over the last year in some places, human waste is an attractive, and often necessary, alternative.
In cases where sewage mud is used, expensive chemical fertilizer use can be avoided. The mud contains the same critical nutrients.
“Overly strict standards often fail,” James Bartram, a WHO water-health expert, said. “We need to accept that fact across much of the planet, so waste with little or no treatment will be used in agriculture for good reason.”
    63. What is the main problem caused by the use of waste water for irrigation?
    A. Farmers and consumers may be affected by harmful bacteria.
    B. It will make the farm produce less competitive on the market.
    C. It will drive producers of chemical fertilizers out of business.
    D. Rivers and lakes nearby will gradually become contaminated.
    64. What is environmental scientist Pay Drechsel’s attitude towards the use of untreated human waste in agriculture?
    A. Indifferent. B. Responsible. C. Favorable. D. Skeptical.
    65. What does Pay Drechsel think of the risks involved in using untreated human waste for farming?
    A. They can be addressed by improved sanitation.
    B. They will be minimized with new technology.
    C. They have been somewhat exaggerated.
    D. They can be dealt with through education.
    66. What do we learn about James Bartram’s position on the use of human waste for farming?
    A. He challenges Liqa Raschid-Sally’s conclusion.
    B. He deems it indispensable for combating global poverty.
    C. He echoes Pay Drechsel’s opinion on the issue.
    D. He thinks it the only way out of the current food crisis.
A 64. C 65. D 66. C

根据第四段“When this water is used for agricultural irrigation, farmers risk absorbing disease-causing bacteria, as do consumers who eat the produce raw and unwashed.(当这些水被用于农业灌溉时,农民和那些生吃未经清洗的农产品的消费者都面临着吸收致病细菌的风险)”可知,用污水灌溉造成的主要问题是农民和消费者可能会受到有害细菌的影响。故选A项。
根据第四段“But Pay Drechsel, an environmental scientist, argues that the social and economic benefits of using untreated human waste to grow food outweigh the health risks.(但是环境科学家佩·德雷塞尔(Pay Drechsel)认为,使用未经处理的人类排泄物来种植粮食,其社会和经济效益超过了健康风险)”可知,Pay Drechsel认为用未经处理的人类排泄物来种植粮食,效益高于风险,所以他对此持支持态度。
根据第五段“Those dangers can be addressed with farmer and consumer education, he said, while the free water and nutrients from human waste can help urban farmers in developing countries to escape poverty.(他说,这些危险可以通过对农民和消费者进行教育来解决,而人类排泄物中的免费水和营养物质可以帮助发展中国家的城市农民摆脱贫困)”可知,Pay Drechsel认为用未经处理的人类排泄物来种植粮食带来的风险可以通过教育来解决。
根据最后一段“‘Overly strict standards often fail,’ James Bartram, a WHO water-health expert, said. ‘We need to accept that fact across much of the planet, so waste with little or no treatment will be used in agriculture for good reason.’(世界卫生组织水卫生专家巴特拉姆说,“过于严格的标准往往会失败。我们需要在地球的大部分地区接受这一事实,所以很少或没有处理的污水将有充分的理由用于农业。”)”可推知,James Bartram也赞同将污水用于农业灌溉,所以他赞同Pay Drechsel在这个问题上的观点。故选C项。

    Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
Some of us take on second jobs to make ends meet. Some do it for a chance to do the work they actually enjoy. And some of us create our own second jobs to build a business or create our own projects. No matter what the reason, though, juggling more than one job is guaranteed to be a “crash” course in time management.
We all know that we’ll have to figure out a time management system when we take on a second job. Equally obvious is the fact that what works for one person (and their jobs) probably won’t work for anyone else. ____67____. There are a few tricks, though, that can help.
____68____. Even if you are the boss on your second job — you’re working for yourself — you have an obligation to keep that work separate from your day job. Focus on what’s in front of you. There’s actually a benefit to punching a clock when you work for more than one supervisor. When you’re on the clock for Company A, you know exactly which projects you should be working on. If Company A is paying for this time, you should be theirs, heart and soul, at least until you clock out.
Good records can also help. I’m not just talking about the calendars and task lists most of us rely on. Making sure that you have any contact information available whether you’re at Job A, Job B or home can take some extra effort, but it’s worth it. ____69____.
I know plenty of people who bring their work to their primary job. It seems to be a favorite tactic of folks starting up a freelancing career or small business. I don’t think that’s the best way to manage a packed schedule. If you don’t have your primary employer’s permission, the arrangement is secret at best. That said, these situations do happen. If you’re in one of them, the best advice is to just keep things quiet.
Some companies don’t want to work anywhere else. They want to put in your eight hours, go home, sleep well and come back rested. Others consider employees who go looking for other projects as its benefits --such employees have a jump start on networking and have a wider variety of experiences.
Unfortunately, most supervisors do not come with a label describing which variety they belong to. ____70____. So the general rule seems to be that you keep quiet on your extracurricular activities. I wouldn’t talk about Job A at Job B, although, if my boss was to bring up the matter, I’d be entirely truthful.
    A. Priority should definitely be given to your day job
    B. The same goes for your notes and other paperwork
    C. It’s up to you to find a system and stick with it
    D. Sometimes it is no easy task to make decisions between Job A and Job B
    E. Keep firm dividers between your different jobs
    F. It can be very hard to figure out your boss’s attitude
C 68. E 69. B 70. F
根据空格前句子“Equally obvious is the fact that what works for one person (and their jobs) probably won’t work for anyone else.(同样明显的事实是,对于一个人(以及他们的工作)有效的东西可能对其他人无效)”可知,不同的人或者工作,其合适的方法是不同的,所以取决于你自己去寻找一个有效的方法,并坚持下去。由此可知,C项“It’s up to you to find a system and stick with it(该由你自己去找到一个系统并坚持下去)”符合文意。故选C。
根据空格后“Even if you are the boss on your second job —you’re working for yourself — you have an obligation to keep that work separate from your day job.(即使你是第二份工作的老板——你为自己工作——你也有义务把这份工作和你的日常工作分开)”可知,此段主要讲述即使自己创业,也要把不同的工作区分开。由此可知,E项“Keep firm dividers between your different jobs.(在不同的工作之间保持牢固的界限)”符合文意。故选E。
根据该段第一句“Good records can also help. I’m not just talking about the calendars and task lists most of us rely on.(好的记录也有帮助。我说的不只是我们大多数人依赖的日历和任务列表)”可知,该段主要讲述记录的重要性。由此可知,B项“The same goes for your notes and other paperwork.(你的笔记和其他文书工作也是如此)”符合文意。
由此可知,F项“It can be very hard to figure out your boss’s attitude.(想要弄清楚你老板的态度是非常困难的)”符合文意。故选F。

    IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
    Hardworking Brains
It's late in the evening: time to close the book and turn off the computer. You're done for the day. What you may not realize, however, is that the learning process actually continues - in your dreams. It might sound like science fiction, but researchers are increasingly focusing on the relationship between the knowledge and skills our brains absorb during the day and the fragmented, often bizarre(奇怪的)imaginings they generate at night. Scientists have found that dreaming about a task we've learned is associated with improved performance in that activity (suggesting that there's some truth to the popular notion that we're "getting" a foreign language once we begin dreaming in it). What's more, researchers are coming to recognize that dreaming is an essential part of understanding, organizing and keeping what we learn.
While we sleep, research indicates the brain replays the patterns of activity it experienced during waking hours, allowing us to enter what one psychologist calls a neural virtual reality. A vivid example of such replay can be seen in a video researchers made recently about sleep disorders. They taught a series of dance moves to a group of patients with conditions like sleepwalking, in which the sleeper engages in the kind physical movement that does not normally occur during sleep. They then videotaped the subjects as they slept. Lying in bed, eyes closed, one female patient on the tape performs the dance moves she learned earlier.
This shows that while our bodies are at rest, our brains are drawing what's important from the information and events we've recently encountered, then integrating that data into the vast store of what we already know. In a 2010 study, researchers at Harvard Medical School reported that college students who dreamed about a computer maze(迷宫)task they had learned showed a 10-fold improvement in their ability to find their way through the maze compared with participants who did not dream about the task.
Robert Stickgold, one of the Harvard researchers, suggests that studying right before bedtime taking a nap following a study session in the afternoon might increase the odds of dreaming out the material. Think about that as your head hits the pillow tonight.

    71._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

One possible version:
Learning continues in our dreams, which in turn improves our performance, and dreaming is key to comprehension, organizing and retaining knowledge. Brain replays the activity learned during the day and keeps drawing important information to integrate into existing knowledge. So we can try to study right before sleep.

    Dear editors,
I know you’re going to set up new programs on line. So I’m writing to suggest two programs---“Reading for Fun” and “Homework Guidance” as an online learner.
First of all, I think reading is of great significance to the whole life of people. “Reading for Fun” can create a good language environment for online learners, broaden their horizons, and encourage them to absorb rich language, in order that learners can better use the language.
Secondly, homework allows us to master what we have learned, which can deepen understanding and memory. However, many of our students’ parents are usually busy and have no time to guide their homework. And students do homework at home, where there no teachers. “Homework Guidance” not only can help complete homework, but also can improve the enthusiasm of students. Besides, under the guidance of the program, students can develop good study habits and not worry about their homework any more.
That's why I recommend the two programs. I am sure they will be well-received by the online learners. I hope you can take my suggestion into consideration.
    Sincerely yours,
    Li Hua

    Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two passages and one longer conversation. After each passage or conversation, you will be asked several questions. The passages and conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
The U.N. Development Program has published the yearly report since 1990.This year's came out last week. Later this week is the World Summit in New York. Leaders will mark the sixtieth anniversary of the United

Nations. They also will discuss progress over the past five years toward he U.N 's Millennium Development Goals.
One goal is to cut the number of people living in extreme poverty by fifty percent by 201S.Other goals are to reduce child death by two thirds and to provide basic education for all children in the next ten years.
The new Human Development Report warns that the goals are at risk. I says that without more money for development, there will be millions of death that could have been prevented. And. it says. more than eight hundred million people will still be living in extreme poverty. The number is almost four hundred million higher than the target for 2015.
The U.N. report says developing nations must seek investment and fight dishonesty. But it says economic growth alone will not help most countries reach the goal to reduce poverty. i says they must also fight social inequalities and respect human rights.
Finally. the report calls for major changes to international policies on aid, trade and security. It says the world has the resources to end poverty, but must also have the political will.
    (Now listen again, please!)
    Questions:
    11. In what year did the U.N. Development Program begin publishing its yearly report?
    12. What does the passage tell you about poverty?
13.Which of the following does this passage mainly talk about?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage
Last August Susan and forty-two other students got wet and dirty while removing six tons of garbage from the river running across their city. They cleaned up the river as part of a week-long environmental camp. Like one in three American rivers, this river is so polluted that it’s unsafe for swimming and fishing.Still,Susan, who has just completed her third summer on the river cleanup, sees a change in this river.“Since we started three years ago, the river is getting a lot cleaner,” she says. Environmental scientists praise the teenagers for removing garbage that can harm wild life. Water birds, for example, can choke on plastic bottle rings and get cut by scrap metal. Three years ago, when the cleanup started, garbage was everywhere. But this year the teenagers had to hunt for their boats the fastest.By the end of the six-hour shift, they had removed enough garbage to fill more than two large trucks. “Seeing all that garbage in the river makes people begin to care about environmental issues,”Susan says. She hopes that when others read that she and her peers care enough to clean it up, maybe hey would think twice before they throw garbage in the river.
    (Now listen again,please!)
    Questions:
    14. What does the passage tell us about American rivers?
    15. What did the students find when they came to the river this year?
    16. What was the expected reaction of the local people to the students’ efforts?
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
W:Hello, welcome to “Advice" radio program. What's your name?
    M:Jim.
    W: What's your problem?
M:Er...well I'm beginning to lose my hair.Er,1 went to the doctor, but he just said there was nothing I could do about it. He said it was probably hereditary. My father was bald by the time he was thirty .
    W: And how old are you? M;Me? I'm twenty-eight.
M:And are you losing a lot of hair then?
M: Well. it comes out a lot when I comb my hair and you can see a thin part on the top of my head.
W: Does that really worry you, Jim?
M: Well. I don’t like it. It's old. I don’t want to look like a middle-aged man at twenty-eight. And I wonder if there is some special shampoo I should use, and if you could tell me one that I should buy to stop it getting worse.
W:Well,Jim, to be honest, there's not really a lot you can do about it.I mean, baldness is one of those things
that, you just have to try to accept. Some men find it more difficult to accept baldness than others. Whatever you do, don't comb it over because that usually looks ridiculous. And the other thing that usually looks ridiculous is a man with a wig, that is, the false hairpiece.I actually think bald men can look very attractive. My husband is bald and I think it really suits him.
    (Now listen again, please!)
    Questions:
    17. What's probably the reason for the man's baldness?18. What does the woman suggest to the man?
    19. Where do you think this conversation takes place?
    20. What does the woman think of her husband's baldness?
