With old mountain bikes (recovered and rebuilt to new standards)we began our adventure on the Grey Owl Trail. Cycling over continuously rough land with unendingly twisted tree roots, rocks, and steep slopes (斜坡)--it was a violent test of the senses and every inch of our bodies. It was like being in a horrific car accident that lasted seven hours .
The rush through the wilderness in black bear country was immeasurable—while at the very same time you’ re thinking that you wish every single human being could experience this ultimate feeling of being in the presents The feeling that you are totally alive.
My cycling companion and I arrived at the start of the 20 km distance of the Grey Owl Trail in Northern Saskatchewan at 2 p. m. on Thursday, May 30th,2019. The weather conditions were ideal in the low 20 ’ s Celcius. We were deep in our own degree of exuberance. There was a breezy wind, though only felt during three short times. The trail connects to the unspoiled beautiful beach of Ajawaan Lake.
In my lifetime I’ve cycled distances of 200 km( 120 miles) or better in a single day, day after day on the highway. But for me, this Grey Owl Trail will probably always remain unmatched. This trail is not for the weak heart. There is a strong reason why they say to allow two or three days to hike and camp this distance. Or, to use a watercraft, and hike the final few miles to Grey Owl ’ s cabin.
We arrived at Grey Owl’ s cabin at suppertime. While we enjoyed the surroundings, we let the legendary cabin and region surrounding it seep (渗透)completely into our very beings. We provided our bodies with water and the elements of a protein-based energy-providing meal—for we had to race back once again over the constantly challenging terrain(地形)just barely (not bearly) beating nightfall. Our final mile was in near darkness.
Grey Owl’ s life was captured thoughtfully and beautifully and brought to the big screen and cinemas around the world in 1999 by Academy-Award Winning Director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) starring Pierce Brosnan.
23. What does the underlined word “exuberance” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Anxiety. B. Excitement. C. Failure. D. Temperature.
24. Why does the author think the Grey Owl Trail is “unmatched”?
A. It’s frequented by wild animals. B. It connects famous scenic spots.
C. It’ s most challenging for cyclists. D. It is where traffic accidents occur often.
26.What information can we get about the Grey Owl Trail?
A. It’s a road designed for cyclists. B. It’ s lined by tall trees on both sides.
C. It has a total length of about 120 miles. D. It passes by Ajawaan Lake at some points,
27. Which word can best describe the author’s cycling?
A. Relaxing. B. Dull C. Rewarding. D. Smooth.

Plans to track Australian magpies (鹊) for a study were ruined when the birds worked together to remove the devices from one another^ according to new research from scientists at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
The behavior marks the first evidence of cooperative “rescue” observed within the animals, the researchers stated, as, within just ten minutes of fitting the final tracker, a female magpie was seen using her bill to remove a younger bird’s harness (束具). Hours later 5 most of the birds had been freed from their trackers with the assistance of others. Days later, even the most dominant bird had allowed another magpie to assist in removing the device , the researchers said.
“We don’t know if it was the same individual helping each other or if they shared duties, but we had never read about any other bird cooperating in this way to remove tracking devices,’’ Professor Dominique Potvin, who led the study, said.
“The birds needed to solve the problem, possibly testing at pulling and snipping at different sections of the harness with their bill. They also needed to willingly help other individuals, and accept help, ” the study found.
The study had initially been designed to test a new tracker harness that could be released and collected without having to catch the birds again. It was designed with a weak point that would release when magnetized (使磁化),dropping the harness at a feeding station used by the birds. Despite scientists believing it would require a magnet or “ really good scissors ” to remove the trackers, one bird was seen “ snapping another bird ’ s harness at the only weak point,’’ suggesting it had identified the device’s flaw (缺点).
While studies have previously shown magpies are particularly intelligent and social birds , the team of scientists was surprised by how quickly they discovered a way to team up and get rid of the devices. Despite the study ’ s initial tracking aim failing, the team hope further research can be conducted to discover if the birds randomly discovered the flaw in the device or systematically worked at it until they found the key weak point.
28. What surprised the scientists about the magpies?
A. They helped each other out of trouble. B. They fed each other in difficult times.
C. They each demonstrated their social status. D. They each shared their duties in social life.
29. What’ s the original purpose of the study?
A. To test whether a new tracker harness works.
B. To see how the magpies ask for help .
C. To test the magpies ’ level of intelligence.
D. To set up feeding stations for the magpies.
30.What can we know about the bird’ s harness from paragraph 5?
A. It has some obvious weak points on it.
B. It’s very sensitive to the magnetic force .
C. It’s inseparable once attached to the magpie.
D. It has to be fitted at magpies’ feeding stations.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Magpies Living in Groups Are Social Birds
B .Birds Able to Team Up and Solve Problems
C. Magpies Teach Scientists Unexpected Lesson
D. Birds Skilful at Discovering Flaws in Devices

Whether they know it or not, your students do a lot of critical reading on their own already. For example, many of them could be into young adult fiction. While they’ re reading these books for fun, they are constantly questioning what the author wanted to say with this character or that plot point. They also form unique opinions about the books they read. These are all critical reading activities.
Students can also employ critical reading in their other hobbies. Even if your students are not bookworms—yet——they most certainly like to listen to music.Getting hooked on a song means they ’ re thinking about the lyrics (歌词)and analyzing them in their heads, even if they ’ re doing it unconsciously.
To stimulate your students to take up active reading, you should tell them to bring their favorite reading material to class. Whether it’s the young adult fiction or the lyrics to the newest Billie Eilish song, encourage your students to join debates with one another about the subject of the material. That way, you are teaching students critical reading using their respective hobbies. When the activity is over ,tell your students they have just done a critical reading exercise. Since they weren’t made to read critically but encouraged to do so through their hobbies , they will engage with the next task much more willingly.
Whether you want your students to start doing a critical reading exercise with a specific piece of classic literature or a novel of their choice, you will probably find a critical analysis on it on YouTube. Why not show it to your students and make them see just how much the community of book lovers has grown in the last couple of years? If they aren’t already a member of that community, the activity will make them feel like they’ re missing out. If they are, it can only heighten their desire to develop some reading skills of their own and be able to express clearly why they loved or otherwise hated the last book they read. When you get your students motivated to learn critical reading skills , plan and carry out activities that will help them do that.
32. What can we learn about critical reading?
A. It has to go with specific characters. B. It applies more to young adult fiction.
C. It usually includes complex plot points. D. It happens unconsciously among students.
33. What’s the author’s opinion about critical reading?
A. It’ s an effective way to develop the students’ reading habits.
B. It’s better when conducted with the students’ hobbies.
C. It5 s better to focus on the theme of the reading materials.
D. It shouldn’ t be separated from the lyrics of popular songs.
34. Which of the following can YouTube offer the students?
A. Book reviews. B. Reading exercises.
C. Charity options. D. Debating contests.
35. What may the author discuss in the following paragraph?
A. The ways to help students who don’ t like reading.
B. Why critical reading is necessary for the students.
C. The methods of choosing proper reading materials.
D. How to help the students gain critical reading skills.

Road systems are necessary for public transport. Street network is indeed convenient for humans. 36 . Every week, millions of wild animals die from vehicle collisions(碰撞). Despite the numerous road signs, the increasing number of animal roadkills keeps on increasing each year. Ever since road systems were constructed, animals have been exposed to danger from moving from one place to another. For this reason, wildlife bridges are built to allow wild animals to cross manmade roads safely.
Wildlife crossings are in the form of bridges ^ overpasses and underpass tunnels. 37 .With these safe routes, wild animals won ’ t have to access the busy roads and highways anymore. They can safely cross over or under these structures to move on to their path.
The first wildlife crossing ever made was in the form of bridges for animals. In the 1950’ s, France constructed several animal bridges to protect both animals and humans from vehicle collisions. 38 .Apart from France, the Netherlands also features 600 overpasses and ecoducts (生态通道)for deer, boars, and badgers. As a matter of fact, the Netherlands takes pride in having the longest wildlife overpass in the world. The Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo stretches 800 meters in lengthy overpassing the massive N525 roadway and nearby rail lines.
39 .There could be a few unintended consequences of the wildlife crossings based on their design. The bridges can increase the spread of invasive species ,for example. Predation(捕食) rates could increase as the predators can easily hunt down the prey through the bridges.
However, the importance of ecological crossings cannot be denied. Regardless of the negative impacts, they play a vital role in the preservation and restoration of habitat and species. 40.
A. Diseases may also use the crossings to spread,
B. The wildlife bridges can have negative results as well.
C. Europe surely leads the way in terms of wildlife bridges.
D. These structures provide safe passageways for passing animals.
E. These crossings are used by an increasing number of mammals.
F. But roads and highways have done more harm than good to animals.
G. More ecoducts should be built to provide a safe space for the species.

Use standard Chinese characters online
As the Internet has become a necessary part of life, people are spending more and more time in the cyber world nowadays. However, some netizens are not using standard Chinese characters in their daily communication online.
For example, in order to produce a humorous effect or express certain feelings, some people are making up new words, using similar-sounding words, or simply writing the characters in the wrong way. This practice goes against the traditional way of using Chinese characters, and these coined words and buzzwords might spread some wrong and even illegal information among the public.
In my view, characters are the key to a nation’s culture. Therefore, we should keep using standard Chinese
characters, and try our best to preserve and pass on our traditional Chinese culture.

M: Eh. Going green is everybody’ s duty, I think.
W: So from now on, our family should bring our own bag to the grocery store instead of using plastic bags.
M: I can’t agree more. That is a great way to consume less.
W: What else are people you know doing to “go green”?
M: Our neighbor bought an electric car.
W: The kind that runs on electricity?
M: Yes. He saves a lot on gas. One of my co-workers has a car that runs on natural gas.
W: Oh. I have heard that is a lot less expensive.
M: Yes. He saves a lot of money. Our company has begun a project to build two windmills.
W: Really? That sounds great.
