AChristmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies. The Grinch(2000)This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.Love Actually(2003)While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.Home Alone(1990)This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While other family members are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch an 8-year-old boy beat two grown men.Miracle on 34th Street(1994)You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer anda little girl. The story line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age1.Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?A. The Grinch. B. Home Alone C. Love Actually. D. Miracle on 34th Street.2.What is Home Alone mainly about?A. An unsuccessful family vacation.B.A boy protecting his home by himself.C.A terrible suffering of a little boy.D. An 8-year-old boy's practical jokes.3.Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?A. Owing to its moving plot.B. Because of its funny story.C. Due to its childish story line.D. Because of its famous actors and actresses.【1答案】.A【解析】细节理解题。根据第二段第二句“It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss."可知The Grinch取材于童话故事,故选A。【2答案】.B【解析】细节理解题。根据第四段倒数第二句的“burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps"可知 Home Alone(《小鬼当家》)讲述了一个男孩独自击败盗贼保卫家园的故事,故B项正确。【3答案】.A 【解析】细节理解题。根据最后一段第二句的“but it is incredible touching"可知 Miracle on 34th Street(《34街的奇迹》)之所以受欢迎是因为其故事情节异常感人,故选A。BThat summer I turned 16, my father gave me a car, which permitted Hannah and me to drive around Tucson whenever we wanted to.Hannah was my best friend."Hannah's amazing,"my mother would always say. And sure enough, that summer she signed with a modeling agency . She was already doing runway work .One day, Hannah and I went to the movies. On the way home, we stopped at the McDonald's drive-through, putting the fries on the seat between us to share. "Let's ride around for a while," I said. It was a clear night and moonlight shone over the desert. Taking a turn too fast, I hit a patch of dirt and fishtailed.French fries on the floor. An impossible amount of blood on Hannah's face. People took us in separate ambulances. In the emergency room, my parents spoke quietly : Best plastic surgeon in the city . End of her modeling career. We'd been wearing lap belts, but the car didn't have shoulder hamesses. I'd cracked my cheekbone; Hannah's forehead had split wide open. What would I say to her? When her mother, Sharon, came into my hospital room, I started to cry, bracing myself for her anger. She sat beside me and took my hand."I almost ended my best friend when I was at your age," she said."I totaled her car and mine.""I'm so sorry,"I said." You're both alive , " she said . " The rest is window dressing . " I started to protest, and Sharon stopped me. "I forgive you. Hannah will too."Sharon's forgiveness allowed Hannah and me to stay friends throughout our life.I think of her gift of forgiveness every time I want to resent someone for a perceived wrong. And whenever I see Hannah, the scars are a symbol of grace for me.4.What caused the car accident?A.Poor visibility. B. Driving too fast.C. Hitting a patch of dirt. D.Not staying focused.5. Lucky Survival B.Lifelong FriendshipC.My Best Friend Hannah D.Learning to Forgive5. Which word can best describe Hannah's mother?A.Supportive. B. GenerousC.Optimistic. D.Helpful.6.What result did the accident cause?A . It worsened Hannah and the author's friendship .B. It made both of Hannah and the author disabled.C . It changed Hannah's working career .D. It ruined the author's confidence in driving.7.Which is the best title for the text?A. Lucky Survival B.Lifelong FriendshipC.My Best Friend Hannah D.Learning to Forgive【4答案】B【解析】细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Taking a turn too fastI hit a patch of dirt and fishtailed."可知,作者开车拐弯太快导致了车祸。故选B项。【5答案】B【解析】推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“I forgive you. Hannah will too."可知,汉娜的母亲原谅了作者的过错,这说明汉娜的母亲是一个宽宏大量的人。故选B项。【6答案】C【解析】推理判断题。根据第二段中的that summer she signed with a modeling agency和第四段最后一句“End of her modeling career."可知,此次车祸断送了汉娜的模特生涯。故选C项。【答案】D【7解析】主旨大意题。根据全文内容及最后一段中的“I think of her gift of forgiveness every time I want to resent someone for a perceived wrong."可知,汉娜的母亲在作者犯错时选择了宽恕,而作者也学会了宽恕他人。所以D项适合作为本文标题。故选D项。CThe freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”.I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness.Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best part- particularly to my taste, dulled by months of coldweather root vegetables- was a 7 a.m.adventure to the Sarasota farmers' market that proved to be more than worth the early wakeup call. The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets.Baskets of perfect red strawberries;the redpainted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.Disappointed by many a broken, vineripened(蔓上成熟的) promise, I've refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they're unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown's Grove Farm's stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal- and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn't be experiencing again for months.Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown's Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where- luckily for me- I was planning to have dinner that very night.Without even seeing the menu, I knew I'd be ordering every tomato on it.8.What did the author think of her winter life in New York?A.Exciting. B.Boring.C.Relaxing. D.Annoying.9.What made the author's getting up early worthwhile?A.Having a swim.B.Breathing in fresh air.C.Walking in the morning sun.D.Visiting a local farmers' market.10. What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter?A.They are soft. B.They look nice.C.They taste great. D.They are juicy.11.What was the author going to do that evening?A.Go to a farm. B.Check into a hotel.C.Eat in a restaurant. D.Buy fresh vegetables.【8答案】 B 【解析】推理判断题。由第一段中的The freezing Northeast hasn't been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter和dulled by months of coldweather root vegetables可知,作者厌倦了纽约的冬天,因为那里根本没有乐趣,同时也厌倦了冬天的根茎蔬菜,所以可以推断出作者认为纽约的冬天是令人厌烦、枯燥和单调的。故选B项。A项exciting“令人兴奋的”,显然与作者真实的感受相反;C项relaxing“令人放松的”,文中体现不出作者明显的放松情绪;annoying“令人恼怒的”,作者只是感觉“枯燥、单调”,并非“恼怒”。【9答案】 D 【解析】细节理解题。根据题干关键信息词worthwhile可以定位到第一段的最后一句。由...the best part...was a 7 a.m.adventure to the Sarasota farmers' market that proved to be more than worth the early wakeup call.可知,作者认为,早起去参观萨拉索塔农贸市场很值得,因此选D项。【10答案】 B 【解析】细节理解题。由倒数第二段中的...I've refused to buy winter tomatoes for years.可知,作者在纽约已经好多年不买冬季出售的西红柿了,然后通过No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they're unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless.可知,纽约冬季出售的西红柿只是看起来好看,但是吃着发干、很硬而且无味。故B项正确。A、C、D三项与作者所描述的纽约冬季出售的西红柿的现实情况相反,故排除。 【11答案】 C 【解析】推理判断题。根据题干关键信息词that evening可定位到最后一段中的...I learned that Brown's Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where—luckily for me—I was planning to have dinner that very night.,句中的that very night是关键信息词。由此可知,这个农场是Jack Dusty(一个新开的饭馆)的一个(蔬菜和水果)供应商,而幸运的是作者那晚正好要去这个位于the Sarasota Ritz Carlton的饭馆吃饭。故C项正确。此处并未提到“晚上去一个农场”“入住一家宾馆”,因此可以排除A、B两项。文章最后一句话说的是在那个饭馆直接点(order)每一道带西红柿的菜,而不是D项所说的“买新鲜的蔬菜”。D2020 is a leap year, and as we all know leap years happen every four years, right? Wrong. That extra day in February is designed to keep the Earth in sync with the astrological year. But, what you might not realize is that the maths isn't that simple and occasionally we have to wait eight years. The method of calculating when leap years occur might be a bit more complicated than you think. Way back in 1582 the calendar we now use was first put into effect. The Gregorian calendar was named after the pope at the time, Gregory XII. The people who created it realized it wasn't perfect to just add an extra day every four years.A day, of course, is measured by the amount of time it takes the Earth to complete one full rotation(旋转) on its axis(轴). A year is the number of days it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun, and most people assume the number is 365. However, the Earth actually takes just under 365 and a quarter days to complete one full revolution around the Sun.So, every four years we get an extra day, which falls on 29th February. However, as mentioned earlier, it is in fact just under a quarter of a day. So, by rounding it up, we put the calendar out of sync again -- which means that after a while we have too many days. That imbalance has to be readdressed. Otherwise after 400 years we'd end up with three extra days. So in 1582, they realized that every turn of a century should skip the extra day to subtract those three extra days. This is why 1700, 1800 and 1900 aren't leap years. But wait, there's more. The year 2000, the millennium, is a leap year. That's because over a period of four hundred years we only need to remove three days. So, every 400 years the turn of the century is a leap year. This means the next time you hear people saying," leap years happen every four years", you can tell them why they're wrong.12. What can be learned from the passage?A. The Gregorian calendar was created by Gregory XIII.B. Reducing 3 days every three centuries, people perfect the calendar.C. It takes the Earth less than 365 days to go around the Sun.D. The calendar wouldn't be balanced if we had a leap year every four years.13. What is the purpose of the second paragraph?A. To show the history of the oldest calendar.B. To introduce Gregory XIII to the readers.C. To present how Gregorian calendar was named.D. To indicate that calculation of the leap year is not easy.14. Which of the following will be a leap year?A.2100. B. 2400. C. 2700. D.3000.15. In which section is the text most likely to appear?A. A news report. B. A geography textbook.C. A science magazine. D. An astronomy book.【12答案】D 【解析】细节理解题。通读第一段,尤其最后一句“But, what you might not realize is that the maths isn't that simple and occasionally we have to wait eight years”可知,每四年有一闰年是错误的,有时候我们得等8年。后文具体介绍了其中的原因,故D项的表述正确。【13答案】D 【解析】写作意图题。根据第二段第一句"The method of calculating when leap years occur might be a bit more complicated than you think"和最后一句"The people who created it realized it wasn't perfect to just add an extra day every four years”可知,确定什么时候是国年的计算过程可能比想象的更复杂,每四年增加一天的计算方法并不完美。后文具体介绍了如何确定什么时候是闽年的计算方法。由此推断第二段的作用是表明国年的计算并不容易,故选择D项。【14答案】B 【解析】推理判断题。根据最后两段中"every turn of a century should skip the extra day to subtract those three extra days"和"So, every 400 years the turn of the century is a leap year”可知,闰年的计算方法是在每四年闰一天的基础上,每到世纪之交时不闰这一天,而每400年要再闰一天。根据”The year 2000, the millennium, is a leap year”可知2000年是闰年,400年之后的2400年应该是闰年,故选择B项。 【15答案】C 【解析】推理判断题。本文讲述了为什么闰年不是每四年一次并详细介绍了如何计算哪一年是闰年,哪一年不是闰年的方法。这类与科学计算有关的内容最有可能出现在科学杂志上,故选择C项。第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The Ways to Help You Stand out in InterviewsInterview preparation has always been one of the most overlooked areas in the employment process.
