A 19. C 20. B
One of the best-known stories in English history is that of King Alfred and the cakes. Children are taught the story in which Alfred was on the runfrom soldiers who were invading his country from Denmark and Norway. Alfred hid in the house of a poor woman. She asked him to watch her cakes being baked by the fire. Alfred was thinking about his problems while he was watching the cakes. So he let the cakes burn and was shouted at by the angry poor woman. No one knows if the story is really true. Certainly, Alfred was the king of parts of England from 871 to 899 and he did have to fight off the armies that entered his country. Maybe the poor woman would not know how important he was. In those days, news did not always travel to places far away. But whether the story is true or false, it is a good way of helping young people take an interest in the very rich history of their country.

Do you like running enough to make it a habit? Tierney Wolfgram does; she has made running a lifelong career and isn’t stopping.
In February the 16-year-old from Woodbury High School, Minnesota, US, competed at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. She finished the marathon with a time of 2:42:47 as the youngest competitor in the race and ranked 76th out of 390 runners. However, the cross-country season wasn’t held until winter because of the coronavirus pandemic(疫情). So she jumped at the opportunity to train for another race—the Parkway Marathon in California.
In November, Wolfgram, who turned 17, broke the Women’s American Junior marathon record with her time of 2:31:49. The old record was 2:34:32, which had stood since 1984. “I’m absolutely stunned,” said her assistant coach. “I knew she was going to break it, but she really showed out!” During the run, she once hit a wall pretty hard, but she overcame it to finish. “I guess I can say I gave it my all,” she told Runner’s World. “When I finished, all I was thinking was that I was super happy,” Wolfgram said.
This was only her third marathon. In 2018, when Wolfgram was 15 years old, she ran her first marathon just because she wanted to see if she was able to do it. “I believed that I would get faster as the distances got longer and I’m still glad that I did it.”
When preparing for that first marathon, she ran up to 120 miles per week. Although her parents didn’t have any background in running, they helped her train. At first, her dad would take her out in the morning and run about 13 miles. The distance would gradually increase each day. On top of her runs in the morning, she would do cross-country practice after school.
After the Parkway Marathon, Wolfgram and her team now prepare for the indoor track and cross-country race this winter. As for the marathon, Wolfgram will consider attending the Olympics Games in 2024 after it’s scheduled.
24. Why did Wolfgram train for the Parkway Marathon instead of the cross-country season?
A. The two competitions were held on the same day.
B. She was not full prepared for the cross-country season.
C. Only adults could compete in the cross-country season.
D. The cross-country season was put off because of the pandemic.
25. What does the underlined word “stunned” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Satisfied. B. Surprised.
C. Anxious. D. Interested.
26. What inspired Wolfgram to run her first marathon?
A. Her coach’s support.
B. Her parents’ encouragement.
C. Her desire to prove her ability.
D. Her wish to break the national record.
27. Which of the following words best describes Wolfgam?
A. Determined. B. Caring.
C. Brave. D. Outgoing
D 25. B 26. C 27. A
根据第二段“However, the cross-country season wasn’t held until winter because of the coronavirus pandemic(疫情). So she jumped at the opportunity to train for another race—the Parkway Marathon in California.( 然而,由于冠状病毒大流行,越野赛季直到冬季才举行。因此,她抓住了另一场比赛的训练机会——加利福尼亚的Parkway马拉松)”可知,由于新冠疫情,越野比赛被推迟了,所以Wolfgram进行了加利福尼亚的Parkway马拉松训练。故选D。
【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词前文描述“In November, Wolfgram, who turned 17, broke the Women’s American Junior marathon record with her time of 2:31:49. The old record was 2:34:32, which had stood since 1984.( 11月,17岁的Wolfgram以2:31:49的成绩打破了美国女子青少年马拉松纪录。之前的纪录是2小时34:32,自1984年以来一直保持着)”可知,因为Wolfgram打破了美国女子少年马拉松记录,所以教练感到很惊讶;再结合划线单词所在题干可知, “stunned”的意思是“惊讶的”,选项B切题。故选B。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In 2018, when Wolfgram was 15 years old, she ran her first marathon just because she wanted to see if she was able to do it.( 2018年,Wolfgram15岁,她第一次跑了马拉松,只是因为她想看看自己是否有能力做到)”可知,Wolfgram渴望证明自己的能力,激励她进行第一次马拉松跑步。故选C。

When it comes to the judgement of their bodies, women can’t win. People often make “fat jokes”, but fat-shaming is no laughing matter; neither is fit-shaming.
I spoke to two women who were ashamed for being fat, and then, after losing weight, ashamed for being fit.
Sarah Moore is a 29-year-old mother of three from US. She became a personal trainer after losing more than 45 kg. She remembers the fat-shaming she had before. When waiting to get on a roller coaster(过山车) once, people behind her were complaining about the wait, and someone said, “Don’t worry. She’s not going to fit on here, and you’ll soon be next.” But after losing weight, Moore said people still commented on her body even more. “Are you sure you can eat that? Aren’t you worried you’ll regain the weight?”
“Fat-shaming made me feel sad and helpless, and fit-shaming makes me angry,” she said. Changes in body weight can also influence relationships. It can upset the balance because others can get jealous(嫉妒). People who lose weight can experience personality changes, such as an increase in confidence, which also influences relationships.
Fit-shaming has been harder to deal with for Andrea Sereda, a 38-year-old social worker in Canada. She said that when she was 9, her grandfather told her at a birthday party, “I don’t think you should eat cake,” and made comments about how many calories(卡路里) she took in. She also experienced similar things in college. The judgment of Sereda’s body increased after she lost 57 kg. It’s worse with people who knew me before,” Sereda said. “People always say, ‘you’re too slim and now you’re going to disappear’.” It was mostly friends making such comments. Closer friends seemed to compare their own bodies negatively to Sereda’s new shape.
Let us try to understand that just because someone has lost weight, it is unfair for them to be commented on their new shape. Everyone has the rights to live free from body-shaming, no matter how they look.
28. Sarah Moore is ashamed for being fit after losing weight mainly because ________.
A people still judge her new shape
B. people are all jealous of her new look
C. she lost too much weight after her diet
D. her personality has changed and made her different
29. The example of Andrea Sereda is used to ________.
A. show the negative effects of fit-shaming
B. suggest what can be done to deal with fit- shaming
C. explain what usually pushes women to lose weight
D. show the difficulties overweight women could face
30. What would be a wise way to treat those who have lost weight?
A. To tell them to be careful with their diet.
B. To compare their body shape with others’.
C. To stop commenting on their body shape.
D. To encourage them to keep their new shape.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards body-shaming?
A. Positive. B. Unclear. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
A 29. A 30. C 31. D
根据第三段中“But after losing weight, Moore said people still commented on her body even more.(但Moore说,在减肥后,人们对她的身材评论更多了)”可知,Sarah Moore在减肥后感觉被羞辱主要是因为人们仍然在评判她的新体形。故选A。
根据倒数第二段首句“Fit-shaming has been harder to deal with for Andrea Sereda, a 38-year-old social worker in Canada.(对于38岁的加拿大社会工作者Andrea Sereda来说,健康羞辱更难处理)”及最后一句“Closer friends seemed to compare their own bodies negatively to Sereda’s new shape.(更亲密的朋友似乎对自己的身材和Sereda的新身材作了负面的比较)”可知,文章以Andrea Sereda为例说明了健康羞辱的负面影响。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Let us try to understand that just because someone has lost weight, it is unfair for them to be commented on their new shape.Everyone has the rights to live free from body-shaming, no matter how they look(让我们试着去理解,仅仅因为一个人瘦了,别人就评价他的新身材是不公平的。每个人都有权利生活在不受身体羞辱的环境中,无论他们看起来如何)”可知,对待减肥的人的正确方式是停止评论他们的身材。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Everyone has the rights to live free from body-shaming, no matter how they look.(每个人都有权利生活在不受身体羞辱的环境中,无论他们看起来如何)”可知,作者以对身体羞辱持否定态度。故选D。
D
It’s recognized that people think that they pick what they like when making choices. However, research suggests that we like something because we have chosen it. In other words, we dislike things we don’t choose.
In an experiment, Lisa Feigenson’s team brought some 10 to 20 months’ old babies into a lab and gave them two same bright and colorful soft blocks to play with. They set each block far apart, so the babies had to crawl(爬)to one or the other—a random(随机的)choice. After the baby chose one of the toys, the researchers took it away and came back with a new choice. The babies could then pick either the toy they didn’t play with before, or a new toy. It turned out that the babies chose to play with the new toy instead of the one they had not chosen. “As if they say were saying, ‘Hmm, I didn’t choose that toy last time, I guess I didn’t like it very much’,” said Feigenson.
This is a common phenomenon(现象)in life. Adults will less like the thing they didn’t choose, even if they had no real preference in the first place. It looks like babies do just the same. It shows that the act of making choices changes how we feel about our choices. The random choices might become our preferences.” They are really not choosing based on their preference,” said Alex Silver, co-author of the study.
This new finding explains why adults build unconscious biases(无意识偏见)when they make choices between the same things. “I chose this, so I must like it. I didn’t choose this other thing, so it must not be so good. Adults make these inferences unconsciously,” Feigenson said.
This also makes sense for us as we live in a consumer(消费者)culture and must make so many choices every day, between everything from tooth-paste brands to styles of jeans.
32. What was most probably the aim of the experiment done by Lisa Feigenson’s team?
A. To check if babies like new toys instead of old ones.
B. To test if babies prefer the things they have chosen.
C. To explain how babies and adults make choices differently.
D. To study if too many choices could create problems for babies.
33. What was the finding of the experiments?
A. Babies preferred bright and colorful toys.
B. Babies’ choices influenced their preference.
C. Babies preferred adults to help them make choices.
D. Babies’ preference influenced how they make choices.
34. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?
A. The value of the experiments.
B. The source of adults’ unconscious biases.
C. The problems with adults’ unconscious biases.
D. The wise ways of making choices in a consumer culture.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Random Choices Matter
B. Preference Affects the Choice
C. Babies Like What They Choose
D. Too many Choices Confused the Adults
B 33. B 34. A 35. A
根据文章第一段“However, research suggests that we like something because we have chosen it. In other words, we dislike things we don’t choose.(然而,研究表明,我们喜欢某样东西是因为我们选择了它。换句话说,我们不喜欢我们没有选择的东西。)”可知,研究表明的是我们的喜好和选择之间的关系,这也是本文要讨论的话题,由此可以推断出Lisa Feigenson的团队做这个实验的目的也是围绕这一话题进行的,目的是为了测试婴儿是否喜欢他们所选择的东西,第二段对实验的具体介绍也证明了这一点,故选B项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“It turned out that the babies chose to play with the new toy instead of the one they had not chosen. “As if they say were saying, ‘Hmm, I didn’t choose that toy last time, I guess I didn’t like it very much’,” said Feigenson.(结果是,婴儿们选择玩新玩具,而不是他们没有选择的玩具。“好像他们在说,‘嗯,我上次没选那个玩具,我想我不是很喜欢它’,”费根森说。)”可知,实验的结果是婴儿的选择影响了他们的偏好。故选B项。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章倒数第二段“This new finding explains why adults build unconscious biases(无意识偏见)when they make choices between the same things.(这项新发现解释了为什么成年人在选择相同事物时会产生无意识的偏见。)”和文章最后一段“This also makes sense for us as we live in a consumer(消费者)culture and must make so many choices every day(这对我们来说也很有意义,因为我们生活在消费文化中,每天都必须做出很多选择)”可知,最后两段主要讲的是实验的价值。故选A项。
故选A项。
Some places can create strong memories. We often clearly remember important events in our lives and link them with the places where they happened. Many people remember exactly where they were when they heard very good or very bad news. The following are a few special places that are important to Americans who look to the past, but also are thinking of the future.
New Orleans Streetcars
Many American cities once had streetcars, but not anymore. ____36____ Anthony Falls has been driving streetcars for 10 years, and plans to keep doing so.
“First of all, it’s one of the most, the oldest rail lines in the world. ____37____ Because at one time they didn’t have people of color driving the street car. So I think that’s a big part of my job.”
Historic Houses
Historic homes can interest people seeking to connect with the former owners. Barbara Klein tells us about three such homes, including a very simple, white house in Virginia. ____38____
This simple house in Winchester, Virginia, opened its doors to the public in August. It was home to singer Patsy Cline, who died at the age of 30.
Patsy’s first cousin, Patricia Brannon, shows the house to visitors. ____39____ She is pleased that Winchester is finally honoring her cousin, nearly 50 years after she died in a plane crash.
Havre de Grace
Havre de Grace is a town in the American state of Maryland. This part of Maryland is famous for its wildlife. Hunters use decoys(用于诱捕鸟兽的动物或仿制物)to get ducks and geese to come close enough to shoot. The wooden birds are so highly respected here that Havre de Grace calls itself the decoy capital of the world. It also has a museum with more than 1,000 decoys. ____40____
A. Most of them were hand made.
B. And second of all, it’s just part of being part of history.
