I have been a volunteer for three times. All three have been enriching and valuable in the development of my career, lifestyle, and personality.

At the age of 16, I volunteered in a march from the Cascade Mountains to the Puget Sound called the Mountains to Sound project. We planted trees and learned about environmental protection. The new trail(小路), called the Mountains to Sound Greenway, was over 20 miles. I decided to walk and run the whole way in one day. My brother, myself, and one other person were the only three people to walk the whole new trail in one day out of maybe 100 people. I had to push myself to my limits of physical strength and endurance, but the feeling after achieving it was unique.

Then I volunteered as a meditation teacher, I have been teaching meditation for free for over 10 years. I was commonly shy in front of an audience and looked for ways to avoid speaking in pubic. Through teaching meditation classes as a volunteer, I learned the art of presenting myself and giving speeches. So, being a teacher has given me confidence and my skills in making speeches. I also gained a lot of joy from teaching and seeing others grow in their peace.

These days I teach the kids in my community to play musical instruments and sing. It’s wonderful to see the kids enjoy themselves through music.

These three volunteering experiences have made me helpful and independent in business and in my personal life. I believe it is important to prove to yourself that you can achieve great results, and for charity. It is perhaps the most satisfying experience to act for others rather than for yourself. The greatest success is to provide success for others.

    24. Being a volunteer makes the writer’s ______ richer and better. Which is not mentioned?

    A. career

    B. writing

    C. lifestyle

    D. personality

    25. Which is right when the writer volunteered in the march?

    A. She picked up some garbage.

    B. She planted some trees and flowers.

    C. She was the only person to walk the whole new trail in one day.

    D. She learned how to protect the environment.

    26. What does the underlined word “presenting” mean?

    A. Showing.

    B. Enjoying.

    C. Helping.

    D. Teaching.

    The Popular Luosifen

The river-snail noodle, or Luosifen, is a popular dish in Liuzhou, known for its strange smell.

Exports (出口)of Luosifen made remarkable growth in the first half of this year, data from Liuzhou Customs showed Thursday. A total of around 7.5 million yuan ($1.1 million) worth of Luosifen were exported from Liuzhou, southern China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, from January to June this year, eight times the total export value in 2019.

In addition to the traditional export markets such as the United States, Australia and some European countries, shipments of the ready-to-serve food were also delivered to new markets including Singapore and New Zealand.

Combining the traditional cuisine (菜肴)of the Han people with that of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups, Luosifen is a delicacy of rice noodles boiled with pickled bamboo shoots, dried turnip, fresh vegetables and peanuts in spiced river snail soup. It brings a "stinky" smell after being boiled.

Listed as a cultural heritage(遗产) of Guangxi in 2008, the dish was introduced in the food documentaries on CCTV, "A Bite o f China" in 2012.

Its unique flavor (风味)has conquered the taste buds of food lovers and was one of the best-selling ready-to-serve food during the novel coronavirus epidemic in China.

"Our daily output has doubled to 3 million packets from last year," said Jia Jiangong, deputy director of Liuzhou Municipal Commerce Bureau.

Local producers have also made it better to the taste of eaters from foreign countries. "Luosifen is traditionally made from river snail soup, but we have developed a new product that uses beef bone soup while keeping the original (原始的)flavor. It was very well received and accepted," said Liu Qingshi, chairman of Liuzhou Luozhuangyuan Food Co Ltd, a major Luosifen producer.

    27. What’s special about Luosifen?

    A. It’s known for its strange smell.

    B. It’s made of river-snail.

    C. It’s a kind of noodles.

    D. It made remarkable growth for the whole year.

    28. What was the total export value of Luosifen in 2019?

    A. About 7.5 million yuan.

    B. About 0.9 million yuan.

    C. About 1.1 million yuan.

    D. About 56 million yuan.

    29. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A. The history of Luosifen.

    B. Advice for eating Luosifen.

    C. The reason why Luosifen is popular.

    D. The way Luosifen is made.

    30. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. The eaters from foreign countries liked the original flavor.

    B. The river snail soup has been stopped.

    C. Luosifen with new flavor was popular in foreign countries.

    D. It was impossible to buy beef bone flavor in foreign countries.

    D

Researchers and disease experts have told CNN that changes in human behavior --- destroying the animal’s natural habitats (栖息地)and the huge number of fast-moving people now on Earth --- has enabled diseases that were once locked away in nature to cross into people fast.

Bats are the only mammal(哺乳动物) that can fly, allowing them to spread in large numbers from one community over a wide area, scientists say. This means they can take a large number of pathogens(病原体), or diseases. Flying also requires a lot of activity for bats, which has caused their immune systems (免疫系统)to become very specialized.

When a bat is stressed -- by being hunted, or having its habitat damaged by deforestation -- its immune system is challenged and finds it harder to cope with pathogens. "We believe that the impact of stress on bats would be very much as it would be on people," said Cunningham. "It would allow infections (传染) to increase. You can think of it like if people are stressed and have the cold sore virus, they will get a cold sore. That is the virus being 'expressed.' This can happen in bats too."

"We are increasing transport(运输) of animals -- for medicine, for pets, for food," said Kate Jones, Chair of Ecology and Biodiversity at University College London. "We are also destroying their habitats into landscapes for people. "

There are two simple lessons, they say, that people can learn, and must learn fast.

First, bats are not to blame, and might actually help provide the solution. "It's easy to point the finger at the host species," said Cunningham. "But in fact it's the way we get along with them that led to the pandemic spread of the pathogen." The coronavirus is perhaps man's first clear sign that environmental damage can kill humans fast too. And it can also happen again, for the same reasons.

The second lesson is that damage to the planet can also damage people more quickly and seriously than the climate change.

It's not OK to turn a forest into factories without understanding the influence on people’s life and health.

    31. What made the locked diseases cross into people?

    A. Changes in man’s behavior.

    B. Animals’ natural habitats.

    C. Fast-moving people now on Earth.

    D. Animals with diseases in nature.

    32. Paragraph 3 mainly tell us _________.

    A. the difference between bats and people

    B. how bats get sick and increase infections

    C. the influence of bats on people

    D. people’s understanding about bats

    33. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. To explore more medicine for bats.

    B. To provide more space for animals.

    C. To stay away from bats.

    D. To protect nature is to protect ourselves.

    四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(10分,每小题2)

Earthquakes can sometimes be really scary, but it’s important to know how they form and why they do.

There are things called plates that run along the surface of the Earth. They are always moving about and pushing into each other. This is a very slow process, but they like to bump into each other a bit. When they are moving around, sometimes they get squeezed or stretched. The rocks then move with very large force and when this happens, we get an earthquake.

More than a million earthquakes happen on Earth every year. Surprisingly, they normally last for less than a minute but can cause some damage.

A tsunami is a large ocean wave which is normally caused by an earthquake that happens underwater or from a volcanic (火山的)explosion. With a tsunami, the water flows straight, and this is what causes these frightening things to happen. It would not be cool to see a tsunami heading in your direction.

80% of the world’s earthquakes happen in the Pacific Ocean near Japan in a place called the ‘Ring of Fire’. Sadly about 10,000 people die in earthquakes each year. Most of the deaths are when people are trapped in falling buildings.

How can we protect ourselves in an earthquake? In the first few seconds after the shaking starts, try to quickly move away from anything that could fall and injure you. Drop to your hands and knees under a sturdy (坚固的)table or desk that can offer cover from falling objects. Get down on your hands and knees, and crouch under the desk or table until the shaking stops.

Protect your head and neck from falling things. If possible, grab a pillow, sofa cushion, or another object to protect your face and head. Find a covered spot to take shelter. Stop in a clear area away from trees or buildings.

    1. What is along the surface of the Earth?

    2. How many earthquakes happen on Earth every year?

    3. What causes a tsunami?

    4. Where do most of the deaths happen?

    5. Why do we have to stay away from trees or buildings in an earthquake?
