A recent study has found that being exposed(显露) to low temperatures creates more good fat which
burns calories in the body. Being cold follows the effects of exercise, protecting against obesity and
improving health. The researchers have discovered that exposure to cold changes the make-up of gut bacteria(肠道细菌), which can lead to fat-burning, improve glucose metabolism(葡萄糖代谢), and
    reduce body weight.
While ordinary white fat, known as bad fat, piles on when we eat more calories than we burn, brown fat
seems to burn extra calories to produce heat. Babies have lots of brown fat — they need it to keep
warm — but there are small amounts in the necks of adults, too. Studies have shown that staying in a cold environment can speed up the formation of more brown fat in the body.
Researchers predict the health benefits of being exposed to cold may be linked to gut bacteria. They exposed the first group of mice to cold temperature of 6 ℃ for up to 10 days and discovered this caused a major shift in the make-up of the mice’s gut microbes(肠道微生物), preventing the mice from
    gaining weight.
Then, the gut bacteria were transplanted into the second group of mice that did not have the gut
microbes. It was found that they improved glucose metabolism and agreed with cold temperatures. The
mice also lost weight as the changes in gut bacteria improved the formation of brown fat. However, after three weeks of cold exposure, the body weight began to remain stable.

Professor Mirko Trajkovski of the University of Geneva claims that they provide powerful evidence that gut microbes play a key role in people's ability to adapt to the environment. They are excited about testing whether targeting gut microbes could be a promising approach for preventing obesity and related conditions.
    54. What's the new finding of a recent study?
    A. Good fat has nothing to do with calories. B. Exercise can make people become fat.
    C. Being cold helps people lose weight. D. Gut bacteria will stop glucose metabolism.
    55. What do we know about the brown fat?
    A. It's usually considered as bad fat. B. It will fail to produce in cold bodies.
    C. It can't be found in the bodies of adults. D. It burns more calories in low temperatures.
    56. With the gut bacteria, the second group of mice .
    A. kept losing weight continually B. had much less brown fat in the cold
    C. got better ability to accept the cold D. produced more gut microbes in the body
    57. According to Mirko Trajkovski, the findings .
    A. could provide new treatment for overweight people B. show people how to get used to the cold
    C. remind people of the importance of keeping warm D. may cause more people to take exercise
    C
That morning, we noticed a cab following Sir Henry and Dr.Mortimer in London. But who?
We went to Sir Henry's hotel. Holmes asked Dr. Mortimer if anyone with a black beard lived in or near
    Baskerville Hall.
    “Yes," said Dr.Mortimer,“Barrymore. "
“We must send a telegram to check whether Barrymore is in London or at Baskerville Hall," said
    Holmes.
Sir Henry said he wanted to go to Baskerville Hall.
“OK”, said Holmes. “But you mustn't go alone. Watson can go with you. "
Sir Henry and I agreed to take the 10:30 train on Saturday.
Holmes thought deeply on the way home: the story of the Hound, Sir Charles's death, the strange letter,
the missing boot and the black-bearded man. He sat in his room all afternoon, smoking and thinking.
Just before dinner, a telegram arrived. It said,“Barrymore is at Baskerville Hall. "
“That becomes a dead end, Watson. We will have to look for another way to go forward.
Just then the door bell rang. It was the cab driver who drove the man with the black beard. “I got a

The driver looked surprised and then answered,“The man said he was a detective and that I shouldn't
    tell anyone about him. "
“It's serious, my friend, and you may be in trouble if you refuse to answer.” “His name,” said the driver, “was Sherlock Holmes. "
I'd never seen Holmes more surprised. Then he laughed. “He scored against me that time, Watson. "

The story I would like to tell happened about a year ago. I accepted a position in a company. John, who
I knew, told me much about the job and took my curriculum vitae (简历) to his manager. I did not see
him as a friend because at the time we did not take part in activities together outside of work, nor did
    our wives.
The first week was fine. Nothing was clearly strange with John at first until the second week, when our communication began to get a little strange. John began making conversations like "you would have
had to pay an employment agency(职业介绍所)several hundred dollars for a job like this". I soon
forgot his words till the next day when he made another similar conversation. Right then I started to
really pay attention to what he meant. He acted as if I owed him money for helping me to get the job.
He began to get short with me and I had only been there for two weeks. He should train me in building our e-mail servers(服务器). Instead, he went through the process so fast that even an experienced
worker could hardly keep up. He would not slow down or check whether I was with him or not. If there was something wrong with a server, he would just deal it by himself and not stop to say anything like "you might want to remember this. " I was in a bad mood from then on.
By the third week I began to get tired of his condescension (傲慢). So I began to challenge him in a
way that was only one to one. He would reply to a question of mine with a question or just make me
repeat it, and then cut in on me. I began to hate him. Later I tried to avoid him as much as I could.
He stopped me one day and asked me what had happened. I told him he was very condescending. He
asked me, “What can I do so that you will not feel like this way in the fut ure?” I simply asked him to
treat me with the same respect he would like to be treated with. He did it and we got along better slowly.
I believed there was hope and finally we would become friends and now we are.
    62. Why didn’t the author refer to John as a friend at first?
    A. They seldom spent free time together.
    B. They had only met for two weeks.
    C. Their wives didn’t know each other.
    D. They had many disagreements on work.
    63. What did John most probably mean by saying the underlined sentence?
    A. The company he and the author worked in was very good.
    B. The writer was wise not to ask an employment agency for help. C. He had helped the author get a job without a penny.
    D. The writer didn’t give him several hundred dollars to express his gratitude.

    A. John was an experienced and hard-working employee. B. The writer was very slow in learning new things.
    C. John hardly lent an ear to what the writer expressed. D.The writer slowly got used to his work
    65. What's the writer's purpose of sharing his story? A. To express his dislikes with John.

    C. To remind us what problems can happen at work.
    D. To describe how to get on with your workmate.

    六、任务型阅读 (共 10 空;每空 1 分,计 10 分)
    阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后表格。(每空一词)
We use both words and body language to express our thoughts and opinions. We can learn about what a person is thinking by watching his or her body language. Words are important but the way a person stands or moves his or her hands can also give us information about his or her feelings. A person
frowns(皱眉) when he is angry or in trouble. Parents pat child’s head to show their love. Some players
like to throw their arms forward, as if they’re flying, after they score. You can see body language here and there. Body language does not use words. It is communication with the movement or position of your body. A hand gesture, a big smile, a shaking leg, these are all examples of body language. According to a research made by American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65 percent of communication is body language. For example, a friend asks you to go on a picnic with him; you give him an “OK” gesture to say, “Yes, sounds good!” Sometimes, your words say
one thing but your body language says another. You may touch your face unconsciously(无意识地)
    while telling a lie.
In different cultures, the same body language may mean different things. In the US, eye contact during a conversation shows you are interested in what the other person is saying. But in some Asian countries, it is rude to look straight at a person when you are talking to him or her. People in some countries use different body language to show the same meaning. In France, people kiss cheeks to say hello. The Japanese prefer to bow when greeting.
Perhaps the best example of commonly understood body language is the smile. A smile can open doors and tear down walls. It can be used to express almost any feeling. We can use a smile to ask for help or
to start a conversation. We can smile at ourselves in the mirror to make ourselves feel happier and
stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than to see the smiling face of a good friend.

    Body language
