It has lng been knwn that meat r fruit can be kept fresh fr lng perids by freezing; in ancient China, fr example, fd was stred with ice t keep it fresh. This methd culd als be useful fr preserving humans, and in fact many peple have explred this pssibility.
Hwever, mst living beings that exist under warm cnditins die when frzen. This is because f the harmful effects f freezing ice crystals, which are nt nly larger than the vlume f the water riginally in the cells, but als frm sharp cutting shapes that harm the cells.
In the 1940s Dr B. J. Luyet and a grup f scientists in England were wrking n the prblem f freezing cells withut damaging them. Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause f the damage, Luyet suggested remving sme r all f the water frm the cells befre freezing them.
Using living cells frm chicken, Luyet and his assistants discvered that they culd partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture f the white part f an egg and glycerin, a clear thick liquid made chiefly frm fats and ils. Sme success was btained. The chicken cells were dried, frzen fr a perid f time, and then carefully unfrzen.
Almst all the cells recvered when they reached nrmal temperature. Since then, the cling f whle animals t a temperature very much belw freezing pint fr later unfreezing has becme mre f a pssibility, and the glycerin methd wuld prbably be used t accmplish this.
