Scientists say they have developed a system that uses machine learning to predict when and where lightning will strike.Researchers report the system is able to predict lightning strikes up to 30 minutes before they happen within a 30-kilomcter area.
Lightning is a strong burst of electricity in the atmosphere. Since it carries an extremely powerful electrical charge,it can cause very deadly results. European researchers have estimated that between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. For this reason, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict lightning.
The system tested in the experiments uses a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.
The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data, related to four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity(湿度)and wind speed, was placed into a unique machine learning algorithm (算法), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
The researchers test-ran the system several times. They found that the system made predictions that proved correct almost 80 percent of the time. "It can now be used anywhere," the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said in a statement.
The researchers plan to keep developing the technology in partnership with a European effort that aims to create a lightning protection program. The effort is called the European Laser Lightning Rod project. Scientists working on the project are experimenting with a laser technology that could someday control lightning activity, transferring lightning charges from clouds to the ground, They hope that such technology can one day be used as protection against lightning strikes. Possible uses could be at stations, airports or places where large crowds gather.

One of the most outspoken supporters that I know of women and girls is actually a man. As co-founder of the ONE Campaign, my friend Bono spends a lot of time speaking out against global poverty. Together, we’re working to get out a simple, powerful message: poverty is sexist.
Women and girls are more likely to be in poverty, less likely to get an education and more likely to suffer bad health. And when they are born into poverty, it is much more difficult for them to lift themselves and their families out of it.
Why? One reason is that breaking out of poverty takes time--and that is a resource women around the world are short of. On average, women spend about twice as much time as men in doing the unpaid work that makes life possible for everyone, like cooking, washing, cleaning, shopping and caring. In developing countries, the gap is even much bigger. As a result, women have no time to finish their education, learn new skills, open a business develop personal relationships or even go to the doctor. They dream of creating a better future for their children, but they cannot spare the hours to put those dreams that they have into action.
The fact that the potential of so many women and girls is going unrealized is a sad thing-- but it is also an opportunity for us. We need to recognize, reduce and redistribute the burden of work that is holding them back because if women have time to invest in themselves and their ideas, they could transform the world.
( )4.According to the author, what makes it more difficult for women to climb out of poverty?
A. Sexist prejudice. B. Heavy burden of housework. C. Impossible dreams. D. Bad health.
( )5.The phrase “the gap” in Paragraph 3 most probably refers to the difference in .
A.the time women and men spend on their housework
B.the space women and men need for their private life
C.the income women and men earn each year
D.the dream women and men have about their children
( )6.What seems to be the author’s attitude toward reducing female poverty?
A. Casual. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Unconcerned.
( )7.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A. Why poverty is sexist. B. What global poverty is.
C. How to reduce female poverty. D. How to break down sexist prejudice.
(C)
As temperatures drop, leaves begin to turn for us to enjoy glorious autumnal colors. When temperatures rise again in spring, the growing season for trees starts again. Throughout the warmer months, trees take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it, releasing oxygen as a byproduct. This is the process of photosynthesis (光合作用).The more photosynthesis, the more carbon is locked away.
Carbon dioxide is a major driver of climate change, so the more is taken out of the atmosphere by plants, the better. With the warmer climate leading to a longer growing season, some researchers have suggested more carbon dioxide would be absorbed by trees and other plants than in previous times. But a new study has turned this theory on its head.
The researchers, led by Deborah Zani at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, studied the degree to which the timing of colour changes in autumn tree leaves was determined by the growth of the plant in spring and summer.
Traditionally, temperature and day length were accepted as the main factor determining when leaves changed colour and fell, leading some scientists to assume that warming temperatures would delay this process until later in the season. However, in a new study about deciduous (落叶的)European tree species, researchers recorded how much carbon each tree absorbed per season and how that finally affected when the leaves fell. They found that as the rate of photosynthesis increased, leaves changed colour and fell earlier in the year.
In a world with increasing levels of carbon in the atmosphere, these new findings imply that warmer weather and longer growing seasons will not allow deciduous trees to take in more carbon dioxide. The study's predictive model suggests that by 2100, when tree growing seasons are expected to be between 22 and 34 days longer, leaves will fall from trees between three and six days earlier than they do now.
( )8. In which column of a newspaper is the passage likely to appear?
A. Education. B. Economy. C. Nature. D. Tourism.
( )9. The underlined part “turned this theory on its head" in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by
A. changed the theory completely

A. There is a limit to the amount of carbon dioxide trees can take in.
B. With the rate of photosynthesis increasing, less oxygen is produced.
C. By the year 2100, trees will take in more carbon dioxide to grow stronger.
D. The longer the spring and summer are, the later leaves change color and fall.
( )11. The fourth paragraph is organized by.
A. giving examples B. listing some data
C. analyzing the causes D. making a comparison
( )12. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Carbon dioxide tends to help plants grow faster and stronger.
B. The longer growing seasons are, the better effects trees bring.
C. Warmer climate is making autumn leaves change color earlier.
D. Photosynthesis plays an important part in leaves changing color.

Now a company is launching a new robot on personal service machines. Rather than keeping you company at home,GITA (pronounced Jee-Tah) helps you go hands-free while you walk down the street, to the grocery store or to visit your neighbors. Like the name, which means“outing" in Italian, the robotic servant is for short trips out and about.
Designed by the Piaggio Group, the smart device uses five cameras to see you, follow you around and carry up to 40 pounds of your belongings for four hours. It's similar to those robotic suitcases that trail behind you at the airport, but with an entirely different outside. Picture a large container but on wheels. That's what GITA looks like in the flagship orange color. Imagine having a hi-tech that can follow you around with your shopping inside. Ir's round and strong yet relatively smart and convenient. The robotic helper is a joy to engage with, sort of like a dog.
Operating GITA is simple. You just press one button to turn it on,one button for the cameras to scan your legs, and you're off. It actually does a pretty good job of following you and recognizing when you change directions. Its movement is oddly natural. When you speed up it falls behind a bit before trying to catch up,and when you stop,it stops-usually. GITA operates best on hard surfaces. However,it can't go upstairs. It can roll on slight inclines(斜坡)and keep up with a walking person at speeds up to 6 miles per hour.
A system of sounds and lights will let you know whether it is unpaired or needs a charge. And an app lets you share your robot with your "crew", so it can follow them, too. With a speaker, your GITA can carry candy and play theme music as you take the kids trick-or-treating.
A USA TODAY tech reporter gave GITA a test run in 2019.He said,"GITA certainly made quite an impression on passers-by as it rolled down New York's busy Madison Avenue."Yet having tech trail behind you takes some getting used to. You can't help but look behind you to make sure it's keeping up, somewhat like monitoring a pet.
( )13.The new robot is designed mainly to
A. instruct you where to go B. serve you as you walk around
C.accompany you at home D.protect you when you're traveling
( )14. What is the new robot probably like?
A. It looks like a royal dog. B.It has flags and smart panels.
C.It is round, orange and can roll of itself. D.It resembles cameras in appearance.
( )15. What can we learn about GITA from the last paragraph?
A.People are heavily dependent on it.
B.It is far from being put into use.
C.It is easy to get lost and needs to be improved.
D.Users have difficulty accustoming themselves to it at first.

On February 21, 2018, Christine Cheers' world fell apart. Someone on the other end of the phone had said the words that bring parents to their knees: “There's been an accident.” Her 32-year-old Navy flight surgeon James was injured in a training mission. At hospital, Christine and her husband David were told that he would never breathe on his own and he would never smile at them again.
It was time for Christine to honor the spirit of her son who had switched his major from commerce engineering to premed (医学预科) because he wanted to help people. It was time to make her every worst day some stranger's best one. She instructed the hospital to begin the organ donation process. Christine Cheers wasn't leaving the hospital until every last one of her son's organs left the building. She and David watched hospital employees carry coolers from the operation room. The last one was his heart. “That was the one I cared about most, Christine says, “With bravery and selflessness, James had such an amazing heart.”Seeing James's heart leave the building, Christine fell into a sadness so deep that climbing out seemed impossible. Her only comfort would be to find out that James's organs had helped people, so she wrote each receiver a letter just to know if they were doing all right.
Mike Cohen, a cyclist, had a heart transplant. James's heart! Two months after the surgery, Mike got a call from the organization that arranged the transplant (移植). They had a letter for him from James's mother. As he read Christine's letter, Mike began to understand just how special his new heart was. Eager to know more about James, Mike googled him. He found they had a lot in common. They were both athletic and practically the same age. Another thing he learned about James: His grave site (墓地) was in Jacksonville—the other side of the country.
