For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smart phones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 13 connect the Internet using a mobile device (移动设备) from time to time. Many younger kids are online, too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor (监视) his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents if something is wrong,” Julian says.
Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent’s email address when signing up for a website? That safety net is there because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission (允许).
This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update (更新) COPPA for the first time since the law was created, in 1198—when there were no smart phones. “The nature of the way kids get online has changed,” FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said.
When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to mobile device (移动设备) and newer forms of adverising. “There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. “It is important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that is also can be dangerous if you are not careful.” he adds.
5.Julian’s parents check his web use to make sure ________.
A.he doesn’t watch too many videos.
B.he doesn’t play computer games.
C.he stays safe on the Internet.
D.he controls his online time.
6.How does the author explain children’s unpleasant online experiences?
A.By describing his own experiences.
B.By presenting scientific research.
C.By showing differences.
D.By using examples.
7.People often hold the wrong idea that ________.
A.normal websites are always safe.
B.the Internet is becoming safer and safer.
C.COPPA can ensure their complete safety.
D.daily checks prevent future online problems.

Plastic pollution has long been a problem, but now it's gotten to a new height-literally.
Microplastics, referring to plastic fragments and particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter, have been found on Mount Qomolangma as high as 8,440 meters above sea level, just 408.86 meters below the peak of the mountain, according to a recent study published in the journal One Earth.
“These are the highest microplastics ever discovered so far, “ lead author Imogen Napper from the University of Plymouth, UK, said in a statement.
Scientists collected snow and water samples from 19 different locations from 4, 200 meters above sea level all the way up to the top of Mount Qomolangma. They found microplastics in all the water samples and part of the snow samples. The most polluted sample was from the Base Camp in Nepal, where most human activity on the mountain is concentrated. It had 79 particles of microplastics per liter of snow.
But how have these fragments made it all this way and in such a great abundance? The answer is apparent-human activities. It is climbers who bring plastic products to the mountain. Even if they don't litter, just walking for 20 minutes or opening a bottle of water can release microplastics into the environment.
Even covered in ice, the Arctic is also a victim of plastic pollution. A 2020 report published in Nature suggests that there are 2,000 to 17,000 plastic particles per cubic meter in Arctic ice cores. Experts think microplastics may be transported by air and then reach the North Pole in snowfall.
“What we don't yet fully know is the potential problems these tiny pieces of plastic could be having to ecosystems," said Christian Dunn of Bangor University , UK.
Then what can we do? “We need to start focusing on deeper technological solutions that focus on microplastics, like changing fabric design and include natural fibers instead of plastic when possible, " Napper said.
8.Where did Napper's team find the microplastics?
A.At 408.86 meters below the top of Mount Qomolangma.
B.In all water and snow samples collected.
C.At 4,200 meters above the Everest Base Camp.
D.At the foot of Mount Qomolangma.
9.Which of the following may protect Mount Qomolangma from microplastics?
A.Stopping littering. B.Avoiding bottled water.
C.Limiting use of equipment. D.Forbidding climbing at all.
10.How do experts think plastic pollution reached the Arctic?
A.By planes flying in the air B.By wind from other places.
C.By humans traveling there D.By huge tides in the sea.
11.What did Napper suggest?
A.Promoting new styles of clothes. B.Improving technology for ecosystems.
C.Replacing plastic with natural fibers. D.Researching microplastics' harm.

Too many birthdays, retirements and charity fundraisers can take their toil on our wallets and purses. We would recommend putting in only what you can afford. Developing a regular savings habit can also help in meeting many of future life’s financial challenges.”

If there's one thing I can't stand people saying, it's, "I'm not good at anything. I don't have any talent. " I just don't buy that at all. To me, everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist. There was a time when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student. I was a funny﹣looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds. I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned, in just about every other aspect I was a loser. I wanted to fit in, to be someone and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at. One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events. I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(标枪). Suddenly something inside me began saying, "Try it! Try it!" I had to wait for my turn, though, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw…the best throw going about 30 yards … I looked at the teacher.
"Hey, Orowitz, you want to try?" he asked.
Embarrassed, I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then," he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin. Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand, I was seized with a strange feeling -- a new﹣ found excitement. For some crazy reason, I was relaxed over what I was about to do, even though I'd never done it before. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go. The same voice that had urged me to throw it, now told me it was a good throw.

46.Some people think that a hero must be a person who has made outstanding contributions to the country or the world. Some people may regard the one who saved many lives as a superhero. In my heart, a hero must be an every man who is helpful and brave in daily life. My father is such a person, who is always ready to help. My father is not only warmhearted but also very brave.
Last summer, our family was on vacation at the beach. My father was watching my brother and me playing in the water when a woman alerted him that two children in the deeper water appeared to be in danger. Hearing this, he immediately swam to the struggling kids. After doing his best to rescue the two kids successfully, my father got tired and exhausted. He told the reporter, “I took action out of instinct, and I was just doing what any dad would do.” My father set a good example for us, and his spirit will always inspire us to move on.
47.Paragraph 1:
I watched as the javelin took off. I saw it drawing a beautiful arc in the air and flying lightly over the mark of 30 yards. My heartbeat started to speed up with my nerve tightened like a full bow. Then came the teacher's voice in disbelief:"44 yards! Oh! My! Eugene Orowitz has thrown out an incredible record!"In no time, I was overwhelmed by the loud cheers of my classmates. But I could only hear the soft inner voice saying to me: "Now, you have your own talent. " The teacher walked to me with the javelin. "Keep it", he said encouragingly, "You are going to be an excellent Javelin thrower. "(Eugene Orowitz 投出超出30码的成绩,老师鼓励他)
Paragraph 2:
That night I took the javelin home with me. I shared the amazing experience with my parents and couldn't wait to show them my ability right after my story. Supported by my dear parents, I applied to join the school track team for more professional training and then began my practice day after day. I had seen the stars above the playground early in the morning as well as late in the night and everything finally paid off as I came first in the National Javelin Championship. So, here is what I want to tell to those so﹣called "stupid kids": Sometimes, you need to wait for your talent to find you, not the other way around. But when the opportunity comes, please seize it without hesitation. Your talent never fails you. (Eugene Orowitz 和父母分享自己的成功喜悦,父母鼓励他继续进行专业训练)
