Standing on the edge of the plane, my tandem skydiving (双人跳伞) instructor, Bill, asked “Do you have any last words?” “Yes,” I said, joking. “I hope my parachute opens.”
I’d never felt more alive as Bill and I stepped out and started our freefall. Those first few seconds were amazing. As we reached 4,000 feet, I felt a parachute open above us. This, I was told , would slow us down for a smooth descent (下降). So why were we still traveling so fast? I looked up: The parachute was flopping unopened in the wind. I started to freak out. I could hear Bill swearing as he tried to fix whatever had gone wrong. Seconds passed, which felt like forever, until finally our emergency parachute opened. Except it got caught in the first one, making both parachutes useless. I asked Bill, “Are we going to die?” He said he didn’t know. At that moment, I just felt guilty. I’d brought my family along for the day. I’d invited them along to watch me die.
We hit the ground. I was immediately breathless, and an unimaginable pain shot up my back as we bounced into a lake on a golf course. Gathering all my strength, I turned to face Bill. He started screaming. We were found by some golfers. My mother and sister cried uncontrollably as Bill was put into a helicopter, and I was placed into an ambulance. The next four or five months were intense. I had broken my back. After being discharged (出院) from the hospital, I locked myself in my bedroom and took painkillers. I became terrified of the outside world.
After years of therapy(治疗) and hard work, the deep physical and mental pain is healing. I heard that Bill made a full recovery and returned to skydiving. I was always terrified of being myself and doing the things I wanted. Now I’ve learned that I need to be fearless. There’s nothing like falling from 15,000 feet without a parachute and surviving to force you to make the most of every day.

D. He became more confident in himself.
7. What did the author eventually realize?
A. Safety first. B. Fear can lead to failure.
C. Cooperation matters. D. Seize and cherish every day.

In an industrial area close to Egypt’s northern coast, colored lights and nine huge shining artworks made of factory waste materials by seven recycling artists brightened the night.
The artworks, mostly made of wastes of iron, plastic and wood, are on display at the first edition of the Alamein Art Festival. The festival being held at an industrial park owned by Industrial Development Group (IDG) in the Mediterranean resort city of New Alamein was organized by Art D’Egypte, an Egyptian platform for art and heritage.
“The one-month festival, which kicked off on Thursday, seeks to promote the concept of environmental sustainability (持续性) through art,” said Nadine Abdel-Ghaffar, founder of Art D’Egypte and chief organizer of the festival. “Through their eco-friendly art installations (装置), Egyptian contemporary artists call on people to be aware of protecting the environment and the climate.”
One of the artworks on display features two large leaves standing side by side inside two opposing metal frames, looking like two pages of an open book. “It sends a message to factories that the materials they regard as wastes can be used for good purposes by artists in creating artworks, which can make a place more beautiful, “said experienced Egyptian sculptor Omar Tossoun and explained how he created his sculpture A Leaf.
In the center of the open-air exhibition area, visitors’ attention is drawn to a colorful 6-meter-tallshining object that looks like a jellyfish. It took two months for Marwa Magdy to finish the artwork called Jellyfish, which took half a ton of wasted iron.
Visitors have been impressed by the concept of recycling waste materials into artworks. “If you look around, the artists have really done very nice works. It is such a brilliant idea to use something that otherwise would be discarded and make it into a beautiful piece of art,” said Yehia Hamad, one of the visitors.
8. What can we know about the Alamein Art Festival?
A. It lasts about two months.
B. It isn’t popular with visitors.
C. Its artworks were created by 9 artists.
D. Its artworks were made of factory waste materials.

A. Nadine Abdel-Ghaffar. B. Omar Tossoun.
C. Marwa Magdy. D. Yehia Hamad.
10. What does the underlined word “discarded” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Recycled. B. Thrown away. C. Bought. D. Fixed up.
11. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Omar Tossoun: An Experienced Artist
B. Alamein Art Festival: An Important Festival
C. Recycling Artists Turn Factory Waste into Artworks
D. Huge Shining Artworks Attract World’s Attention

For those who get angry when they miss out on lunch, it may be the perfect excuse: researchers have confirmed that a lack of food makes otherwise bearable people “angry”.
In one of the first studies to explore how hunger affects emotions (情绪) as people go about their daily lives, psychologists found that the more hungry people felt, the more angry - or hangry-they became.
The study came about after Prof. Viren Swami, a social psychologist at Anglia Ruskin University, was told - on more than one occasion - that he was hangry and should do something about it. The challenge left him wondering if being hangry was a real phenomenon (现象).
Working with researchers in Austria and Malaysia Swami recruited (招募) 64 adults aged 18 to 60 to record their emotions and feelings of hunger five times a day for three weeks. While the relationship between hunger and emotions has been studied in labs, the volunteers monitored their feelings as they went about their daily routines. Swami found being hangry is a real thing.
The study does not propose any solutions, but Swami believes that being able to recognize and label the emotion can itself be of help. “A lot of the time, we might be aware of what we are feeling but not understand the cause of it. If we can label it, we are better able to do something about it,” he said.
Researchers have a number of guesses that aim to explain why hunger can take charge of our emotions. One is based on studies that suggest low blood sugar increases impulsivity (冲动), anger and aggression. But it is not clear whether such loss of self-control can arise from small drops in blood sugar. Another proposes that when people are hungry, they are more likely to see the world through angry eyes.
Regardless of the mechanism, Swami believes the study raises a serious point: children who go hungry to school are less likely to learn effectively, and more likely to have behavioral problems, so ensuring pupils are properly fed must be a priority. “It’s really important to be able to identify emotions like being hangry so we can reduce the negative effects,” he said.
12. What caused Prof. Viren Swami to do the study?
A. His competition with his colleagues.
B. His academic and research pursuits.
C. The biggest challenge in psychology.
D. The fact that he might suffer from hangry.
13. What can we know about the study?
A. Its importance is beyond doubt.
B. It put forward some practical solutions.
C. Its participants included children and adults.
D. It explained why people could control their emotions.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. We’d better encourage children to stay positive.
B. It’s important to help children get rid of negative emotions.
C. Children going hungry to school are more likely to get low scores.
D. Educators should pay more attention to children’s learning methods.
15. Where can you read the text probably?
A. In a diary. B. In a biology book
C. In a novel. D. In a science magazine.

4. How did the author feel before skydiving?
A. Worried B. Excited
C. Terrified D. Guilty
5. What happened during the tandem skydiving?

D. The author couldn’t breathe during the freefall.
6. How did the accident affect the author?
A. He had constant pain in his head.
B. He became crazy about extreme sports.
C. He was sick both physically and mentally.
D. He became more confident in himself.
7. What did the author eventually realize?
A. Safety first. B. Fear can lead to failure.

Working with researchers in Austria and Malaysia, Swami recruited (招募) 64 adults aged 18 to 60 to record their emotions and feelings of hunger five times a day for three weeks.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. D

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The study does not propose any solutions, but Swami believes that being able to recognize and label the emotion can itself be of help. “A lot of the time, we might be aware of what we are feeling but not understand the cause of it. If we can label it, we are better able to do something about it,” he said.”(这项研究没有提出任何解决方案,但斯瓦米认为,能够识别和标记这种情绪本身就有帮助。他说:“很多时候,我们可能意识到自己的感受,但不了解其原因。如果我们能给它贴上标签,我们就能更好地对此采取行动。”)和最后一段“It’s really important to be able to identify emotions like being hangry so we can reduce the negative effects”(能够识别饿怒症等情绪非常重要,这样我们才能减少负面影响)可知,这项研究的重要性是毋庸置疑的。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Regardless of the mechanism, Swami believes the study raises a serious point: children who go hungry to school are less likely to learn effectively, and more likely to have behavioral problems, so ensuring pupils are properly fed must be a priority. “It’s really important to be able to identify emotions like being hangry so we can reduce the negative effects,” he said.”(无论机制如何,斯瓦米认为这项研究提出了一个严肃的观点:饥饿上学的孩子不太可能有效地学习,更可能出现行为问题,因此确保学生得到适当的喂养必须是当务之急。他说:“能够识别饿怒症等情绪非常重要,这样我们就能减少负面影响。”)可知,挨饿去上学的孩子很可能成绩不好。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“In one of the first studies to explore how hunger affects emotions (情绪) as people go about their daily lives, psychologists found that the more hungry people felt, the more angry - or hangry-they became.”(在最早研究饥饿如何影响人们日常生活中的情绪的一项研究中,心理学家发现,人们越感到饥饿,他们就越生气,或者说越表现出饿怒症。)可知,这篇文章是讲述一项有关于饥饿和情绪的科学研究,所以应该是出现在科学杂志上。故选D。
