The Young Achiever of the Year

Kal Kaur Rai has always been interested in fashion and has just won the title of Yoing Achiever of the Year at the Asian Business Awards. Ever since she was a child, she has drawn clothes and designed patterns. She never told her hard-working parents, who own a supermarket, that she wanted to turn her hobby into a career. She thought they expected her to go onto a more established business, so she went to university to do a management degree.
After university, she moved to London and worked in an advertising agency. She had to attend industry events but couldn’t afford the clothes she like. She started making skirts and tops for herself. When her friends saw her clothes, they asked her to make the things for them. She then found a small shop in London willing to sell her designs. They were very popular and were sold out in a very short time. This encouraged her to leave
her advertising job, take out £20,000 loan ( 贷 款 ) and begin her own womens wear

    Crow’s Message
Crow (乌鸦) perched on a tree branch in the town park. He looked down at the o ther animals. They were taking each other’s food. They were poking each other. They were making fun of each other.
“What is the matter with you?” Crow scolded. “Why can’t you be nice?” he shouted. Crow gave a long speech. He told the animals how disgusting their behavior was.He
    even recited a poem:

You don’t know how to act.

And that is a true fact! You never show you care.

It’s more than I can bear!

None of the animals even looked at him.

“I guess I have to try another way to get through to them,” he thought. “I will trye- mail.” So he typed a note to each of the animals. He commanded them to be polite. He ordered them to share. He ended with, “If you don’t, you will be sorry!”
Not one animal mentioned the e-mail. The animals were still unkind and selfish.

“I need a more exciting way to deliver my message,” Crow decided. He made a long banner. He picked up one end in his beak. Then he flew back and forth above the park. He tried to get the animals’ attention. The animals continued their activities and paid no attention to the sign.
Down on the ground, Rabbit was hopping around the base of a tree looking for tender green leaves to eat. He saw a pile of acorns (橡果). Rabbits are not fond of acorns, sohe started to kick them out of his way. Then he thought, “Squirrels like acorns. I couldtell Squirrel they are here.” He waved to Squirrel, who thought Rabbit was probably trying to play a mean trick on him. But he was curious, so he ran over to Rabbit.
Squirrel was very pleased with the crunchy acorns. “Looking for food is a ful time job,” said Squirrel. “It is nice to have some help. Thank you.” Rabbit felt good about helping.
Squirrel dashed off toward the other side of the park. On the way, he saw Mouse. She was stretching high trying to reach some twigs to make a nest. Squirrel started to make fun of Mouse for being so little. Then he stopped. He reached up and grabbed a bunch of twigs. He gave them to Mouse.
“Thank you!” said Mouse with surprise.

Mouse felt very good, so she was friendly to Duck. Then Duck helped Cricket. So n,all the animals were being kind and helpful. Crow watched in amazement from his perch. Owl flew up to keep him company.
Crow said, “You are smart, Owl. Help me understand what happened. I tried to get the animals to be kind. They paid no attention. Now, they are all being friendly to each other.”
“The reason is easy,” said Owl. “Actions speak louder than words. You tried to telthem what to do, but Rabbit showed them. Good deeds are like seeds. Once they are planted, they can grow.”

Have you ever noticed that we only see certain animals in certain seasons? Many animals move from one area to another at different times during the years. This movement is called migration.
Animals migrate for different reasons. Some, like the manatee and the Ruby- Throated Humming bird, migrate to stay warm in winter.
Some animals migrate for food, water and protection. Caribous move south each winter to forests. The forests protect them from the cold winters and offer a better food supply.
Other animals, like the Emperor Penguin, migrate for their children. These penguins choose the coldest time of year and the coldest place on the planet—Antarctica, to raise their young. They migrate inland, away from the sea, so they are far away from predators
    (食肉动物)when their eggs hatch.

These journeys are often thousands of miles. It’s amazing that so many animals are able to find their way back to the very same places in the world year after year.
Loggerhead Turtles travel thousands of miles to lay their eggs on the very same beach where they were hatched themselves. California Gray Whales have the longest migration journey of any mammal. They travel 10000-14000 miles round trip each year.
We know the many reasons why animals migrate, but no one-really knows how they find their way. They do not have a map, compass or GPS to guide them. Maybe you will become the famous scientist that solves the mystery of animal migration.

Shanghai DISNEY’s theme park, first built on the Chinese mainland, has already been completed, and opened its doors on June 16, 2016. “Six is a lucky number to Chinese people,” the Walt Disney Company said.
Shanghai Disneyland hosted an opening celebration to welcome its first guests. At the opening, it held more Chinese-style activities instead of Western-style ones, because the host wants to show China’s local traditional culture. “We have prepared a three-day celebration and are hiring more than 8,000 actors,” Philippe Gas, Shanghai Disneyland’s general manager, told Shanghai Television yesterday.
So why has Disneyland been so popular? Well, it’s described as “the Happiest Place on Earth” and “a place for the young and young at heart”. Disney’s storytelling in rides like roller coasters is a big reason for their parks’ success. “We tell a story in everything we do,” Pressler said.
However, Disney’s parks haven’t always been popular everywhere. When Disneyland Paris opened in 1992, some French people felt that American culture was invading(入侵) France. But still, the park stayed open and today it is a popular place for European visitors.
    49. Why did the company decide to open on the date of “June 16, 2016”?
    A. Because that day is quite close to the summer holiday.
    B. Because the opening celebration wouldn’t be ready until that day.
    C. Because the number SIX is considered to be “lucky” in China.
    D. Because Shanghai Disneyland wouldn’t be completed until that day.
    50. What did Shanghai Disneyland do on its opening day?
    A. It told stories to the guests. B. It mainly showed Western culture.
    C. It held more activities of Chinese-style. D. It invited guests to have a roller-coaster ride.
    51. What can we infer(推断) from the last paragraph?
    A. At first, Disneyland Paris was a great success.
    B. American culture is quite similar to French culture.
    C. Disney’s parks have always been popular around the world.
    D. Disneyland Paris attracts many visitors from Europe at present.
    C
After that, we went on down the river. It was very dark that night and it wasn’t easy to see where we were going. Suddenly, a big steamboat came at us very fast, and the next minute it was right over us. Jim and I jumped off the raft (木筏) into the water. The boat hit the raft and went on up the river.
When I came up out of the water, I couldn’t see Jim anywhere. I called out his name again and again, but there was no answer. “He’s dead!” I thought. Slowly, I swam to the side of the river and got out. I saw that I was near a big old wooden house. Suddenly a lot of very angry dogs jumped out at me. They made a terrible noise and someone called from the house, “Who’s there?”
“George Jackson,” I answered quickly. “I’ve fallen off a river boat.”
Well, the people who lived in that house were very kind, and they took me in and gave me some new clothes and a good meal. I told them that my family were all dead, so they said I could stay with them as long as I wanted. It was a beautiful house and the food was good there, so I stayed.
A few days later one of the slaves in the house came to me and said, “Come with me!” Together, we went down to some trees by the river. “In there!” he said and went away.
On the ground, I found a man, asleep. It was Jim! I was really pleased to see him. When the steamboat hit the raft, Jim told me, the raft didn’t crash. Jim swam after it and caught it. Then he began to look for me.
We decided to leave at once. It’s all right living in a house for a little while, but you feel more free and easy and comfortable on a raft.
    52. According to the story, which of the following is the correct order?
    a. George saw a big house. b. George got some new clothes.
    c. George found Jim on the ground. d. George jumped off the raft into the water.
    A. c-d-a-b. B. d-b-a-c. C. c-b-a-d. D. d-a-b-c.
    53. Why did George Jackson answer “quickly” when someone called from the house?
    A. George felt afraid and nervous. B. George felt tired and sleepy.
    C. George really wanted to stay there. D. George didn’t want to lie to him.
    54. The underlined word “crash” in Paragraph 6 most probably means “________”.

A 12-year-old girl from Virginia, US, never thought that a simple message she put online could bring her big problems. She posted the words, “Killing. Meet me in the library Tuesday.”, with three emojis(表情符号) of a gun, a knife and a bomb on Instagram, a social media(社交媒体). She was told that she broke the law because of threatening(威胁) her school.
This problem is not far away from us. Not long ago, Ni Hanxiang, a Chinese student at a university in the US, was sent back to China after expressing on social media that he would kill his teachers if he failed to pass his exams.
In China, posting threatening words online is also against the law. In 2013, Wu Hongfei, a singer, got into trouble for saying on Weibo that she wanted to blow up a building.
“Threatening happens not only face to face but also through the Internet, social media and the telephone,” said Mr. Cao, a lawyer from Chongqing. “Although the law of China protects people’s right of free speech, it doesn’t include words that threaten others’ lives and national safety.”
“Some people may not mean to threaten. They may just be trying to say “I’m strong”, said Fred Pratt, a lawyer from the US.
The girl’s mother said her daughter was a good kid who had never been in trouble before. Ni Hanxiang also said he didn’t realize that what he put online was so serious.
“But not knowing the law doesn’t mean the law will treat you any differently if you break it,” says David Allen Green, a lawyer from the UK. So, do you think we’d better spend a minute or two thinking about the words or emojis we use on social media before we press “send”?
    56. The 12-year-old girl from Virginia put the words “Killing. Meet me in the library Tuesday.”, with three emojis ________.

    57. Ni Hanxiang was sent back to China ________.
    A. because he broke the US law B. because he wasn’t honest
    C. after he killed his teachers D. after he blew up a building
    58. Why do you think the writer gives the three examples about posting threatening words online?
    A. To tell people it’s dangerous to go abroad for further education.
    A. To tell people sending threatening words online is against law.
    B. To show it’s common to post the threatening words online.
    C. To advise people to express themselves freely on social media.
    59. From this passage, we can infer(推断) that ________.
    A. Fred Pratt thinks some people just want to say “I’m strong”
    B. the girl’s mother thought her daughter was a good child
    C. cheating in an examination at school may be in prison in China
    D. putting threatening words on QQ may bring you problems
    60. This passage mainly wants to tell us that _______.
    A. we shouldn’t break the US law if we study at a university in the US
    B. students and singers shouldn’t post words or emojis on social media
    C. we should be careful when we send words or emojis on social media
    D. students should study hard at school and not use the Internet too much

On Christmas Eve─the night before Christmas Day─children all over Britain put a stocking at the end of their beds before they go to sleep. Their parents usually tell them that Father Christmas will come during the night.
Father Christmas is very kind and hearted. He gets to the top of each house and climbs down the chimney into the fireplace. He fills each of the stockings with Christmas presents.
Of course, Father Christmas isn't real. In Jim and Kate's house, "Father Christmas" is really Mr Green. Mr Green doesn't climb down the chimney. He waits until the children are asleep. Then he quietly goes into their bedrooms and fills their stockings with small presents. When they were very young, Mr Green sometimes wore a red coat. But he doesn't do that now. The children are no longer young, and they know who "Father Christmas" really is. But they still put their stockings at the end of their beds.

In almost every big university(大学)in the United States, football is a favourite sport. American football is different. Players sometimes kick the ball, but they also throw the ball and run with it. They try to take it to the other end of the field. They have four chances(机会)to move the ball ten yards(码). They can carry it or they can throw it. If they move the ball ten yards, they can try to move it another ten yards. If they move it to the end of the field, they receive six points(点).
It is difficult to move the ball. Eleven men on the other team try to stop the man with the ball. If he does not move the ball ten yards, his team kicks the ball the other team.
Each university wants its own team to win. Many thousands of people come to watch. They all shout for their favourite team.
Young men and women come on the field to help the people shout more. They dance and jump while they shout.
Each team plays ten or eleven games each season.
The season begins in September and ends in November. If a team is very good, it may play another game after the season ends. The best teams play again on January 1, the first day of the New Year. Many people go to see these games and many others watch them on TV.

Once upon a time there was no tea at all in England. People there used to drink a light beer. No coffee or milk but large glasses of beer stood on the breakfast table!
When tea was first brought to England, an old couple got some as a special treat. But they did not know how it should be used. They cooked the leaves in hot water, and spread them on a piece of bacon(熏肉) which they were going to have for dinner. They ate the leaves, and threw the tea away! However, tea is becoming as popular as coffee and milk in England today.
Tea is the leaf of a plant which grows widely in China, Japan and some other countries. Tea farmers usually grow many tea plants on a large piece of land. When the tea leaves are ready to be picked, it is the busiest time for tea farmers in a year. They pull off on the leaves and dry them. Would you like to live in a city where buildings turn the lights off for you, and self-driving cars will find the nearest parking space themselves? Although it might sound a little far from you, living in a “smart” city like this could happen sooner than you think.
Great changes have taken place in towns that we have lived in for centuries, while completely new cities are being built. One such place is the city of Songdo. Every home there will have a “telepresence” system(远程遥控系统)—allowing users to control the heating and looks, take part in video meetings, and receive education, healthcare and government services. Around the city, escalators(自动扶梯) will only move when someone is on them, and offices and schools will all be connected to the system.
The great mind behind Songdo is from the company Cisco. In fact, technology companies around the world such as IBM, Siemens and Microsoft are already in the business.
About 75% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to deal with the coming problems. “Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener,” said Dan Hill, head of a research company.
    52. Which company offers the great mind to build Songdo?
    A. Siemens. B. IBM. C. Cisco. D. Microsoft.
    53. Which paragraph is mainly about the details of a “smart” city?
    A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
    54. Dan Hill thinks that making cities smarter is one way to ______.
    A. drive people out of cities B. control the world’s population
    C. develop his own company D. solve the cities’ coming problems
    55. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

    C. Government Services D. Famous Companies
    D
Advertisements are everywhere, TV, newspapers, magazines and of course, on the Internet. Is advertisement really necessary? Billions of dollars are spent on it every year, so it must be important. After all, it’s a busy world. You have to advertise to get people’s attention to sell products!
Not every company thinks that way, however. The NO-AD company doesn’t advertise in traditional ways. It sells its products by word of mouth. In this way, they can save money and keep costs down, which makes their products cheaper for customers.
“Word-of-mouth advertising” happens when one person tells another about a good experience with a product or service. That next person then tells another friend, family member, or colleague (同事). And so a chain of information is created.
Usually, advertisers talk about how good their product is. Although they say things like “Studies show that our product is the best,” or “Everyone loves this product,” it can sound unconvincing. It’s much more believable to hear about a product from a family member or friend who has used it and liked it. Our loved ones’ opinions are very important to us, so we often listen to their advice about a product.
Word-of-mouth advertising has other advantages, too. It’s cost-effective (after all, it’s free) and a company doesn’t have to create a complex business plan to do it. Here is some advice for small businesses about word-of-mouth advertising.
    ● Be prepared to talk about your company at any time. You never know who you will meet. Always carry business cards.
    ● Only say good things about your company. Don’t say bad things about your competition.
    ● Help other companies by recommending people to them. The more you help others, the more good luck will come back to you and that’s good business.
    56. Why do some companies spend lots of money on advertisements?
    A. To make their products very useful.
    B. To make the environment beautiful.
    C. To tell people the names of their companies.
    D. To attract people to their products.
    57. Which of the following may be a word-of-mouth advertising?
    A. Telling people how good the product is on TV.
    B. Recommending the product you like to your friends.
    C. Telling people the product is the best in the newspaper.
    D. Showing people how popular the product is on the Internet.
    58. What does the underlined word “unconvincing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Uncomfortable. B. Unimportant. C. Unbelievable. D. Unusual.
    59. What might NO-AD companies do according to the passage?
    A. Create complex business plans.
    B. Say bad things about other companies.
    C. Provide cheaper products for customers.
    D. Help other companies by wishing them good luck.
    60. The writer writes the passage to ________.
    A. find out the value of making advertisements
    B. introduce people a new way of advertising
    C. tell people to care more about advertisements
    D. show how to sell products by advertising on TV

One day, a brave jackal came to the river to drink some water. He saw a lion looking weak and tired, and asked, “What is the matter. King of the Jungle?”
The lion told the jackal his story. The jackal felt sorry for the lion. He pulled and pulled at the lion’s tail until the lion became free. The lion was very happy and said, “Thank you so much for helping me. I thought I would die! You are my friend for life! I would like you to come and live with me. From now on, I will hunt and share my food with you.”
The jackal moved in with the lion’s family and had a wonderful time.
Soon, the lion had children of his own and so did the jackal. The lioness was not happy about the friendship. She complained to her children. Her children complained to the jackal’s children; the jackal’s children complained to their mother and their mother complained to the jackal.
The jackal was upset and told the lion, “You told me to live with you. If you don’t like it any more, you should say so yourself.” The lion was shocked and said, “This is not true. I’ve never complained about you. I still want you to continue staying with me.’
The jackal said, “We understand each other. But our families don’t. Perhaps it is better for us to live apart, but continue meeting each other when we are free. We can even hunt together!”

Have you noticed your life becoming a little easier? Now, when you go to a certain shopping mail, you can enjoy its free Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one with your phone. In fact, all these can be seen as the basic parts of a smart city.
The idea of a smart city was brought up by US company IBM in 2010. Generally, a smart city is a city that uses digital technologies such as the Internet to improve city planning, save money and resources, and make our life convenient. How smart can a city be? Here are great examples that we can learn from.
In 2009, Dubuque became the first smart city in the US. The city used smart water meters to take the place of traditional water meters. They can detect (探测)water waste and leakage(泄漏) and send data to let the house owner know. The same system is used for other city resources like electricity and natural gas. This way, people know how they use their resources and are glad to help reduce waste.
Santander in Spain also gives us a look at the future. If people point a phone toward a nearby
bus stop, the phone immediately shows all bus lines that serve the stop as well as their arrival times.
