My family would describe me as anything but a risk-taker. “Grandma drives faster than you!” my younger son likes to joke with me. So when I announced I was going to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a self-defense course, my children, my husband, and even my mom were a bit doubtful.
A gym near my house was offering free two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo(摔跤和柔道). I signed up for it and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands, After the instructor showed various escape techniques, I wondered what I was doing there. Seconds later, I reminded myself that I was on a search to push my boundaries(极限). By the time class ended, I was full of energy.
Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a punch that could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.
Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have to test my skills outside of the gym), I'm proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending myself s not about strength; it's about strategy(策略). At the same time, I'm calmer and less anx1ous—a benefit my family enjoys. As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn't want to be late for her tennis match.

5. How did the author's feelings change during her first self-defense class?
A. Uncertain →excited →bored. B. Cur1ous →excited →confident.
C. Uneasy →confused →determined. D. Excited →confident →discouraged.
6. What can we learn about the author according to the last paragraph?
A. She often feels upset and lonely.
B. She still drives not too fast.
C. She has ever been attacked outside of the gym.
D. She regrets taking the self-defense classes.
7. What can be the best title for the text?

A South Korean company is operating the country’s largest indoor “smart farm” inside a former road tunnel (隧道). The farm produces fruits and vegetables hydroponically (水培), which means the plants do not grow in the ground. Instead, they grow on vertical (垂直) equipment that provides a continuous flow of water.
There are other vertical smart farms in South Korea. But this one, built by the company NextOn about 200 kilometers south of Seoul, is the nation’s biggest. It is also one of the largest indoor vertical farms in the world, with a total area of 2, 300 square meters. But what makes the farm even more unusual is the fact that it sits inside a huge tunnel. The tunnel was built in 1970 for one of South Korea’s first major highways, but it closed down in 2002. NextOn signed an agreement with the government to take over the tunnel and turn it into a high-tech farm.
NextOn officials say the tunnel environment provides ideal conditions for an indoor farm. It keeps a steady temperature of between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius. The tunnel s also completely dark, making it easier to provide exactly the night amount of artificial light.
The farming system can produce more than 60 different kinds of fruits and vegetables. The company said foods produced in the indoor farm are also healthier since harmful chemicals are not necessary to prevent large insect attacks. It can be difficult, though, for smart farmers to make a profit because of the high cost of building and operating. But NextOn said it cut its building costs in half by using the former tunnel and developing its own lighting and water systems. These technologies reduced water and energy use and the need for workers. Sensors also measure things such as temperature, light and air quality.
In South Korea, indoor vertical farming is seen as a possible solution to crop damage related to extreme weather that could get worse due to climate change. The country’s farming industry has also been hurt by shortages of land and workers.
The company says it plans to expand its farm inside the tunnel in the near future to begin growing even more kinds of fruits, as well as plants used for medical purposes.
12. What does paragraph 2 manly talk about?
A. The advantages of smart farms.
B. How special the smart farm of NextOn is.
C. What role NextOn plays 1n smart farms.
D. The history of the company NextOn.
13. How are the products from the indoor farm compared with traditional ones?
A. They’re healthier. B. They cost less.
C. They’re richer in sugar. D. They bring a smaller profile.
14. Which of the following is a reason for South Korea’s turning to vertical smart farms?
A. Its lack of labor. B. Its lack of water.
C. Its food shortage. D. Its poor air quality.
15. What is the company’s attitude to the future of the smart farms in the tunnel?
A. Worried. B. Positive.
C Carefree. D. Doubtful.

I’ve dealt with a fair share of negative (消极的) people in my life. Here, I’ll share with you several tips on dealing with negative people in your life.
One of the most important things I learned is not to debate with a negative person. A negative person likely has very firm views and isn’t going to change that. Just because of what you said. ____16____ The discussion will just turn into more negativity, and you pull yourself down in the process. You can give helpful comments and if the person argues with no signs of backing down, don’t go further.
Some people complain as a way of crying for help. They may not be conscious (意识到) of it, though. ____17____ Take the responsibility to lend a helping hand. Just a simple “Are you okay?” or “Is there anything I can do to help you” can do wonders.
Some negative people start for certain topics. ____18____ Simple things like new movies, daily occurrences, common friends, make for light conversation. Keep it to areas the person feels positive towards.
One way to help the negative person “get it” is to ignore the negative comments. If he/she goes into a negative state, ignore it or give a simple “I see” or “OK” reply. On the other hand, when he/she is being positive, reply in affirmation (肯定) and enthusiasm. ____19____ He/she will adjust to be more positive accordingly.
____20____ If it’s a good friend, let him/her know of the seriousness of the problem and work it out where possible. It’s not healthy to spend too much time with people who drain (消耗) you. Your time is valuable, so spend it with people who have positive effects on you.
A. Negative people aren’t just negative to others.
B. Then you can bring in a new topic to lighten the atmosphere.
C. Learn to see the goodness of the person rather than the negative.
D. Do this often and soon he/she will know positivity pays off.
E. Their comments come across as complaints rather than requests.
F. If all else falls, reduce connection with them or avoid them altogether.
G. Whatever you say, they can find different reasons to back up their viewpoint.
